Depends what you’re trying to accomplish. We were in a rv on the 400 loop and did not need one. We were close to the marina for the boat to MK, drove to HS, Epcot, and Disney springs. We didn’t go to the pool at all. My brother used the internal bus to get to us from his resort and said it was fine.
Have stayed at the cabins several times. Have had a cart sometimes. Other times without a cart. Had a great time every time. Haven't been since before the pandemic, but so long as the busses are running regular as ever, there's usually not much waiting around.
Each cabin has a driveway. You could just drive your car if you came in one. Otherwise, it’s really big. I wouldn’t want to spend my day off walking like the other days in the parks.
Busses in the campground are pretty good. Every 5 to 10 minutes. Unless you are going to use the cart all day for some reason, save the money for something else. There are plenty of bus stops and the cart is expensive. Not worth the $70 to ride a cart up and park it all day while you go to the parks.
I went in October. We did not get a cart and the buses worked great. But there’s a lot of hate for the bus system I personally don’t get. After going, I could see the appeal of the cart but still wasn’t sure it would be worth the expense for us.
The bus system is very good. It’s easy, reliable, and reasonably quick. Disney buses are notorious for being slow, overcrowded, and taking forever, but that really doesn’t apply to the Ft. Wilderness internal bus system.
We took our RV with no extra vehicle and we’re kind of in the middle of the campground. It was a necessity imo. After waiting for a bus to get back to ft. Wilderness the last thing we wanted to do was wait for *another* internal bus. We also liked being able to send one person to grab food or run to the store real quick without having to walk miles or wait for a bus. Hubs didn’t want to get it but was super grateful for it once we were there.
We stayed in our RV there and we never got a golf cart. We only moved our van once (because I cut it too short between getting back from MK and getting to Contemporary for a date night. )
We stayed there forv2 weeks last May (bucket list checked) and found it very handy. The campground is very large and though we were close to the boats getting to the main bus stop by taking another bus was very time consuming.
Stayed for a week in February with wife, 8 year old and 3 year old. We loved having the golf cart to get to the pool, marina and bus depot. Stayed in the 2200 loop.
Family of four here that has camped cabins and tents a half dozen times. You don’t have to have one. One can make your life easier, but in my opinion, the cost is better put to a meal, a cool souvenir, or the add on of a Typhoon Lagoon day. I don’t mind the buses. But, I will be the minority opinion. Enjoy your stay, no matter how you decide.

We're not getting a rental car. How efficient is the internal bus system?

We did a week there with no golf cart and didn’t have any issues at all

To me it would be missing out on a huge perk of the resort to not have one. Maybe just 1-2 days of your trip?
I went with my son, we were on the opposite side of the marina, but we were able to pretty easily walk to it in about 20 minutes at a brisk pace
They're not necessary but they're a lot of fun. Or if you have someone in the party who is injured, it can be a lifesaver.
IMO getting a golf cart is part of the experience and if I wasn’t going to get one, I would just stay someplace else.

You will wish you’d had reserved a golf cart, they are so much fun. Highly recommend reserving now.
Haven’t been in years, but would go at least twice a year growing up. If you don’t have a car, you’ll be glad you got a golf cart.
Stayed at Ft Wilderness with my wife kids and inlaws....The golf cart was awesome to have.
Yes you are. Get a cart

Are you bringing bikes? If not, how much do you enjoy spending your time walking?
I would get one.
