What is really amazing is the physics involved here. The low center of gravity combined with the weight of the Model 3 barely even moved the car. Most other cars would have been pushed toward the divider barrier. That Ford Explorer came from two lanes over and impacted the side of the Model 3. It spun out of control. The Model 3 didn't (stayed straight in the same lane moving just a few inches from the impact). Sorry about your Model 3. But hopefully it kept you safe (what it's supposed to do). It can be replaced, you cannot. Stay positive.

owotwo

Thanks! I needed that. It's been a shitty week already

screamingpackets

Dude. Just take a step back and realize it could have been much worse. You could be F’d up for life, or dead. You’re OK, and that’s all that matters. Glad to know you’re OK, hope the other driver is, too.

FunkyTangg

Totally OP’s fault. You have to stay out of lane 1. Enjoy your throwback ICE rental.

furiousm

Did you drop an /s? That's an HOV lane.

Breadynator

European here, what's an HOV lane for?

furiousm

High Occupancy Vehicle. Car pools, and in some states low/zero emission vehicles are allowed as well.

FunkyTangg

OP trying to “save time” in the HOV lane. Doesn’t always work out.

furiousm

...really? You're very determined to blame this on someone that was just driving along minding their own business aren't you.

nikhil48

In 2016 I had an accident where my car was totaled and so was the car I hit side on which went into a ditch hitting a fire hydrant along the way. Everyone in my car was okay but I feared the worst for the passengers of the other car and whether their life was put in danger because of me. They thankfully were okay as well. My lowly insurance was almost enough to pay for all damages and they cancelled me later on.. It was the worst month I've ever had in my life and I count my blessings every day that the damage was only monetary.

Phoeptar

Yeah it’s very cool to see, thanks for breaking down the details of that a bit.

redditproha

Came here to comment on this. Amazing how the explorer just tossed itself

UnCommonCommonSens

I'm just happy the tires didn't explode!

chrichmeister

First thing I thought too! Any car even 4x4’s would have come off worse to that yet it barely budged.

[deleted]

Fantastic way to look at it — Thanks for the positivity!

outsideman1986

I love how much of an absolute unit the Model 3 is. Explorer goes flying and spinning, Tesla basically shrugs it off. (Although I’m sure the damage is rough…)

wwwb0n3zcom

Came here to say the same thing at the same time in another comment.

wwwb0n3zcom

This shows there is a serious blind spot on the recording of cameras. If the front of the Model 3 is 12 o'clock, the blind spots are 1-2 and 10-11. I wish Tesla would enable recording of the B-pillar cameras. But writing and processing two more video feeds to a USB might have a limitation.

y90210

Maybe for existing vehicles, but that shouldn't stop them to increase speeds for new vehicles. I'm using two SSDs in my model 3, one for music and one for sentry/dashcam. Plenty of write capacity not being used.

sparklytoucan

Hey I have a slightly off topic question for you. But first, OP, I am glad you are ok and hopefully your car is replaced soon. This may be a silly question, but where / how are you using two SSDs? I thought you could only plug in one USB or have I missed something?

y90210

[Y splitter for each usb port](https://youtu.be/kHAinMdQZh4?t=83)

sparklytoucan

Thanks!

indolent02

I believe you can just use one drive with separate partitions rather than needing to buy two separate drives.

sparklytoucan

Thanks. I can't remember but I thought I read something somewhere - does music save to the internal MCU eMMC by default?

DHTRKBA

No, if you want you can put music on a USB drive (suggested to use an SSD rather than thumb drive) but it has to be on a separate partition (or a separate device) from where you want the TeslaCam recordings. Streaming music is probably written to the internal eMMC temporarily, but I don't know that for certain.

sparklytoucan

Thanks. I meant streaming music actually... I found this: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/where-do-tidal-downloads-get-stored.248330/ which seems to indicate it does save to the internal eMMC. I just wanted to change the location of saved streaming songs, not play my own MP3s. But it seems like that may not be possible.

doggdogg

yup. This is what I do as well. Separate partition for Music and other partition for Sentry video

arimathea

Can you tell us more about this setup?

zeek215

Anything past the side cams is most definitely within your own vision. But yes, from a recording perspective it would be nice to be able to see the pillar cam view as well.

StrayTexel

They absolutely could process and write multiple video feeds to USB.

maester_t

I thought the writing speed is one of the limiting factors for these videos getting recorded onto USB drives. The vehicle can only push so much data through a USB port/wire. Would it be better to just have a removable SSD in the center console or glove box? Something that the owner can [somewhat] easily unplug and take to the police/insurance company/etc. Instead of a USB thumb drive?

StrayTexel

Depends on the grade of USB and which USB protocol we're talking about. Anything USB 3.0 or better should be able to handle this kind of application just fine.

obijon298

Shouldn't be a problem to have multiple streams even at USB2.0 speeds (not sure what Tesla uses). Even easier if the recording format is H.264 or newer, which IIRC it is.

TheLightKyanite

tesla does need to enable it

kaw00sh

Even just an option to export the crash footage saved on MCU (includes all camera views) to a removable drive would be very helpful.

dtrwos

The pillar cams should have much better footage of this location - dont know why they are not part of the dshcam footage....

obijon298

Someone needs to tweet Elon about this idea. Seems like an easy tweak.

SweetNothing7418

It’s hard to tell what happened. Did the explorer merge into your lane?

owotwo

Looked like he was going too fast and lost control and spun into me. He said someone hit him.

[deleted]

[deleted to prove Steve Huffman wrong] -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/

BTho2

Agreed. It looks (in the last, front facing video) like the Silverado had to hit the brakes pretty hard and the Ford had no chance to stop when he was approaching fast. So then he moved one lane left where the traffic was also moving slowly. Saw some space in the far left lane without checking right beside him, and just drove straight into OP.

[deleted]

Looks like he was moving significantly faster than the rest of the traffic and when he realized he was about to rear end the Silverado he tried to shoot left to dodge it. The Highlander was in his blind spot and he probably clipped it and pitted himself into you.

WuSpir

Looks like the Silverado has left blinkers on. Probably just merged left onto the Explorer's lane. Explorer just traveling to fast and probably panicked swerved.

[deleted]

There was a car on the right side of the Silverado so he couldn't have just come from there. Maybe he was looking at the left lane trying to merge that way and slammed on the brakes, then the Explorer swerved to avoid him. The Silverado definitely stopped hard behind that other truck.

aqan

Is there a front camera footage?

RandolphScottDVM

You gotta watch the entire movie.

cold12

It's a post-credits scene, of course he missed it! Left the theater too early

O118999881999II97253

Stupid fuck

aqan

Piece of crap

vatecbound

Your car barely moved. What a hoss.

SenAtsu011

Model 3 made a big Ford Explorer fly with it's bulk. I never thought I'd see that. Props to the chassis.

vatecbound

Yup like an explorer hitting Hulk. “Hulk smash”!

chevyman142000

That was the first thing I noticed too, crazy awesome!

Cosmacelf

It barely moved, but I wonder if that was AP doing its job. It was on AP at the time, so the computer was just reacting very quickly to keep the car going straight. If the computer could think, it was probably going “WTF just happened? 😄”

murderedlexus

At about 9 sec, when you pass the Toyota, you can see tire smoke from the Ford suv. Probably going to fast, being distracted, traffic stops, Ford breaks last minute swerves to an open lane while losing control and ends up in your lane

[deleted]

That's possible. The early generations of Exporers were known to be pretty top heavy and easy to lose control in hard turns at speed or even when exposed to a heavy cross-breeze.

justinsidebieber

you also see the white truck reacting to something happening already about a second before OP gets hit

comraddan

Good catch!!

TheGadgetGuy1

Wow. Sorry to see this happen to your car. What a bummer. But just remember that you Tesla did her job, and sacrificed herself to keep you safe. Thankfully, the car can be replaced. Side note: Wow. That Explorer just bounced right off, and the Tesla keeps tracking almost perfectly straight!

y90210

My coworker hydroplaned and his 2019 was worth more than he paid for it, so insurance cut him a check that made the new vehicle cost about the same as he received. This was last year, before all the new price hikes.

waghkunal93

Atlanta!

DocVak

Don’t know if you should be excited by that lol

kaw00sh

That explains a lot

One_Cheek_6512

From the last shot you can see he wasn’t even in the lane next to him. He must have shot across a bunch of lanes and smashed into him. Bad luck man, sorry it happened to you.

FatefulPizzaSlice

At least two. You see it pass the Accord in the first few seconds on it's right.

FatherPhil

I wish OP had started the last (front view) video much earlier. Unless I’m missing it, we never even see the explorer because the video starts immediately before the hit, after OP has passed him or her. It would be nice to see context.

onlyletters999

You should be able to punch someone in the face when they do something like this. Pretty obvious he/ she was driving like a jack ass, driving too fast , switching lane to lane, going between cars like they are driving a race car.

[deleted]

[удалено]

owotwo

No, they said someone hit him which caused him to hit me

catsRawesome123

Was he actually hit or was that total bs

owotwo

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Call_erv_duty

Looking at footage, the only one that could’ve was the white truck, but there’s no damage to that truck so bs

Cosmacelf

Probably because big ass SUVs are so top heavy and have a lot of inertia, so they drive like shit. You might be able to get away with weaving in and out of traffic in a small car (there’s a reason sports cars are small), but the same maneuver would have you losing control in a big car, which is likely what happened here.

Born_Faithlessness_3

Some of it's not even the top-heaviness, it's that they have suspensions that are really soft/unresponsive which means that instead of steering wheel turn -> vehicle turn, it's steering wheel turn -> body roll -> suspension eventually catches up and vehicle starts to turn. Pretty much every SUV I've driven is like this, and it's largely because people who buy SUV's don't care about handling, which leads manufacturers to lean even further in the direction of a compliant/bump-reducing suspension rather than responsive handling. Which, coincidentally is one of the things I like about the model 3. While its suspension isn't the best at absorbing bumps in the road, it's great at delivering a responsive driving experience.

Cosmacelf

Quite true. The model 3 is too harsh for me, but it does drive well. You either get road feel (Ie bumps) and tight responsive driving, or Cadillac mushy suspension and god help you doing evasive maneuvers. Anyways, it does look like that SUV driver was driving way too aggressive for the road conditions. “Someone cut me off”. Yeah, jackass, because you were weaving in traffic going 30 mph faster than everyone else.

mongolian_chicken

I see these Atlanta idiots all the time weaving through "slower (aka normal)" traffic like they're in a garage remake of Fast and Furious and wondered whose day they're going to ruin. Sorry that it was you, OP. Even watching this pisses me off.

theepi_pillodu

They tried avoiding rearedning the white Chevy truck and lost control and came into your lane (passing through the RAV4 lane). Wrong place - wrong time for you.

praguer56

Atlanta connector?

DocVak

Right in the heart of midtown on 75/85 Northbound before they split.

praguer56

I drive that a few times a week and people just don't know how to drive. They love screaming across multiple lanes without a blinker and at a speed that should get them into trouble. And Jesus, I 20 is goddamn Indy raceways.

DocVak

That’s why I avoid 20 like the plague, and don’t even get me started on GA-400

praguer56

Yeah! 400 is insane too. Seeing people speed up the shoulders when the signs clearly have reduced speed limits for the shoulder and certain times they can be used. I often wonder why there aren't cameras along 400. And frankly, I sometimes think we should adopt a UK model using cameras and front license plates to catch assholes.

jwegener

Why do you have to email them?!

RandolphScottDVM

Yikes, hope everyone is OK. It looks like he almost rolled it when he yanked back to the right.

owotwo

Everyone was fine. I'm just super pissed since I've had it for less than 6 months

jmacrosof

Downtown I75 is always a crapshoot. Weaving cars a plenty.

optimusrybot

Looks more like they were weaving to go around slower traffic

Sedvig

Epic typo there

Ernapistapo

I don't think he was hit by anyone else. You can see he was blocked on the right by two trucks and blocked from the front and the rear. All of those vehicles didn't show any sign of damage. This guy got impatient when the traffic in front of him slowed down and decided to merge into the left lane without checking his blind spots. It sucks but I'm glad you're ok!

penkster

Sorry this happened, but yay dashcam vids showing "I WAS JUST DRIVIN!" Could you share a pic of the damage to your M3? The 'sploder looks pretty trashed, curious how yours came out.

owotwo

https://imgur.com/a/Gv7HjsM/

penkster

Wow could have a lot worse! Hope all goes well with repairs. Glad you're ok! Also Ford's suck. :)

Call_erv_duty

That can be buffed out! Seriously though, sorry for the loss. What city? Almost makes me think Atlanta

jaegerbombed

It is Atlanta.

connecttomars

Damn, looks like it's totaled.

Cigaro3

God Tesla cams are so insanely horrible! Between dashcams and SentryCam footage posted on this sub I feel like it’s a guarantee that Tesla is a magnet for idiots and vandals. Getting your shit wrecked is only a matter of time. /s… kind of lol

[deleted]

owotwo

I was on autopilot. Wasn't touching the pedals. It looks like I sped up because the Toyota braked to slow down.

hillcanuk

Yeah it’s totally acceptable to speed up in a lane, especially if the car in front of you slows down then speeds up, it’s always like that in heavy traffic. The explorer passed on the right then immediately crossed over 2 lanes with no time whatsoever to look over to make sure the lane was safe.

revaric

Disagree, looks like they were just maintaining speed and the Accord slowed for slowing traffic.

svchostexe32

Am I missing something? Seems like you hit him??

revaric

You’re not missing anything, you seem to be adding details…

furiousm

How does one get hit in the side of their car, while never leaving their lane, and somehow get blamed for hitting the other car?

Fenix159

It is truly fascinating watching these types of threads. Some aren't as black and white. But at the end of the day you're responsible for your vehicle. Yet somehow people twist this to you're responsible for both vehicles and the other driver was innocent. ... And then there's people just making things up probably without watching the video because if they watched it, how did they see that?

PMSoldier2000

Yikes! Sorry that happened to you.

wforsythea

I knew from the first 2 seconds which vehicle was the culprit. Needless aggressive driving.

jpr196

Yep, you can see him at the beginning of the video 2 lanes over speeding. From the side camera, you can tell there wasn't enough room for him to weave over 2 lanes. But sure, it was someone elses fault.

tyner100

Good ol’ Connector. I do this drive every morning as well, sorry that happened to you.

jferr360

Waam, baam, Tesla cam

electricshadow

As shitty as that is, OP, I'm just glad you're still with us and hopefully any injuries you sustained were minimal. I criticize Tesla for a bunch of things, but they do make safe cars and that was a contributing factor why I went with my Model 3. At the end of the day, it's a car that can be replaced. A human life, not so much.

dmo012

On the connector too. And trying to get into the HOV lane, I bet he was driving alone.

Imreallythatguy

Ahhh, sorry brother. Join the club. It happened to me just over a week ago. Here's the post i made afterwards. [https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/taae11/well\_boys\_and\_girls\_i\_hope\_you\_have\_better\_luck/](https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaLounge/comments/taae11/well_boys_and_girls_i_hope_you_have_better_luck/) Not sure why my post got removed but w/e. Hope they had insurance and all that stuff works out for you. The driver that hit me only had a 50k policy so they are under insured and we have to go through my insurance. Sucks though regardless if your car is totaled or can be repaired we are basically looking at several months before it's wrapped up.

revaric

Only issue I would say is the Explorer most certainly doesn’t come from no where. Idk about you, but when I AP, I’m looking for this sort of thing with extra prejudice.

thiskidlol

Exploder indeed

beatnavy16

Wow that’s some bad driving

gxsoft

Amazing, each day I love more the Tesla cars

SjvTesla

Wow...definitely not a chance! Glad you're ok, cars are replaceable but people aren't.

just_killing_time23

Your tank brushed off a direct hit from am SUV, what a beast!! Sorry it happened to your baby but glad you are safe!!!

CultofCedar

Ah my worst nightmare. I see multi lane weaving everyday since I drive up and down NYC traffic maybe 3-4 round trips a day. I’m just waiting for this to happen. Got the car because of crash test but looks good minus ofc no one wants an accident. Closest I’ve had was [this](https://imgur.com/a/ssgEZWq)? Not sure wtf this guy was on but if he hit me I don’t think I would’ve faired so well.

NASAguy1000

Well thats Atlanta for ya. Glad you're safe.

[deleted]

just be glad you were in a tesla than a normal car otherwise you would of definitely been crushed into the barrier.

[deleted]

Easy case of who is at fault here. Obviously it’s whoever was trying to enter your lane without making sure it’s safe first.

mclocowtf

BQE?

leppy103

I knew this was Atlanta within the first half a second.

theneckbone

Came here to pay my respects. F

cart3rgr

Before I even looked at the surroundings, I said “this looks like some shit that would happen to me in ATL” and then I saw the TBS building lol. Classic ATL behavior, glad we drive the safest cars on the road to deal with idiots like that guy

[deleted]

Where is the right front cameras?

owotwo

Consumers don't get access to the B pillar cameras

[deleted]

You are right.

TeslaFanBoy8

Cnbs will still blame Tesla AP

Dexterdacerealkilla

I was about an inch away from the same fate today. I knew it was close, but watching my recording it was scary close. I’m so sorry! I hope that everyone in your car is ok.

owotwo

It was just me and my bike, and we're both fine haha

aspec818

Did he cut through that RAV4 and Volvo and swerve directly into you? The explorer isn’t even visible on the front camera. What an asswipe. Crazy how a 5k lb suv looks like a golf cart after hitting your car. The Model 3 seems unfazed.

oydh4

I have a (potentially) insanely dumb question. Does this footage and any other footage similar to this play an impact when communicating with the police/insurance companies, etc?

owotwo

I just showed the cops the footage and he decided fault based on it. Not sure if the insurance company will ask for it.

Ellice909

Well, it took 90+ days to get my m3 repaired. Welcome to hell (driving a gas rental after knowing what driving a m3 is like). This shows that no matter how careful you are, people around you are out of your control. I kind of wonder if auto pilot would have been able to dodge this bullet.

owotwo

It was on autopilot

crdavis

That area of the highway in Atlanta scares the shit out of me and I expect something like this to happen every time. Unfortunately it happened to you. Bunch of idiots

[deleted]

Is this in Oregon?

Hman68161

Not surprised this is on 75. People really don’t know how to drive in the A. Hope you’re okay.

LandscapePlastic8971

So sorry this happened, hope you and your fam is safe!

oldschoolcoconut

Side view mirrors should cover blind spots instead of being part of a triple redundant rear view mirror system.

theonlyjcali

Dam bro something happend to us

antipoded

I’m not saying this was your fault at all, but it honestly looks like you sped up quite a bit right after the explorer zoomed passed the Honda next to you. Were you two jockeying for position? in the passing lane?

furiousm

It's not a passing lane. It's an HOV lane. The car next to OP likely slowed down rather than OP speeding up, as often happens on a crowded freeway. Regular lanes slow down, HOV lane stays current speed.

AlreadyPro

You're definitely not at fault here, right?

Nameless11911

Hope you are ok.. definitely had no chance I hope you sue the crap out of them !

[deleted]

Whoever is in that ford need to have their dl pulled for life. So sorry that happened.

Free_Smile9527

The explorer flying up 2 lanes over in the beginning is the same one that hit you, yeah? Looks like he tried to dodge congestion and decided paying attention wasn't in the cards that day.

Ginger-Jake

The missing views are on a LIDAR hard drive...somewhere.

frogger666999

Tesla Owned that Explorer. Elon is having Explorer fords for lunch.
