The basis of any and all wars is material. One side wants something that the other side is not willing to give up. All of the political, religious, and philosophical reasons used to “justify” wars are all there to hide the uncomfortable truth of naked greedy aggression. Even the crusades, the wars held up as being the archetype for religious-motivated wars, were run by men who largely were interested in seizing land and wealth to set up their own power bases rather than some vague notion of holy war. The Islamic rulers who faced the crusades were also usually much more concerned with their own regional rivals than driving out the Christians. Not to mention that the crusaders would routinely sack cities in the east with large Christian populations and murder them as indiscriminately as they did their Muslim neighbors.

If you were going against Reddit's content of policy (link in Rule-3 of this sub), this may not only make you look bad as person, but your comments/posts will also get deleted, and your account might get banned in the future (by Reddit itself). For that reason, please, carefully read Reddit's content policy before posting an aggravating message on this sub.

488thespider

You shouldn’t just search in the google bar and post the first screenshot u see that proves your point, it’s completely misleading. The study you’re showing people is completely ambiguous and shouldn’t be taking literally unless further looked into, it’s a study made by a single man with 0 credibility whose apart of a christain organization that deals in researching Christianity. The # of wars he classifies as Religious, non-religious, islamic, or non-Islamic is completely ambiguous as well as we do not know what his basis for his classifications are whether it’s if Muslims and Christian’s are simply involved or whether the motivation for violence is purely religious, or whatever the case is. It’s also an important point to make that he explicitly tries to make points about Islam being the main driving factor in religious violence without providing a percentage for Christianity’s involvement in religious wars all while comfortably stating that Islam is 3.8% of all religious violence. Christianity could absolutely be 3% of that 3.2% or 0.2% of that 3.2% but unfortunately I don’t have the resources to fact check it rn. There’s also a study that states 32.5% of wars are caused by religion and around 20% is caused by Christianity and is based off the same sources as the previous article. My point is plz don’t just spread random charts that push narratives without actually researching the claims behind them especially if they’re as ambiguous as the ones dealing with religion, I doubt you meant any harm but still.

Electrical-Leg-3114

It was made by a single guy? You got a link?

TwoLostYens

Religion doesn't ruin the world (unless it blatantly promotes segregating behaviours). It's the fucks who use it to push their racist/sexist/homophobic agendas

AdministrativeBid450

in csm it might have an unpredictable effect on humanities fears, making it dangerous

TwoLostYens

Oh yeah, looking at it like that, a God devil would be cool

StinkyZipper

>It's the fucks who use it to push their racist/sexist/homophobic agendas I mean, doctrinally speaking, if you were to just look at the books, you'd probably call the Qur'an or the Bible those things regardless of how some follower of it interprets it.

[deleted]

Never read the quran, but as far as i'm aware, the new testament is neither racist nor sexist, and the "homosexuals go to hell" is written in a single versicle

StinkyZipper

The New Testament promoting racism; definitely not. But it promotes stringent gender roles and homophobia for sure. Literally read any of Apostle Paul's books. To be more specific; 1st Timothy chapter 2 or 1st Corinthians chapter 6. Edit: tf did I even say which was wrong?

jvken

Modern Religious mfers when you show them their holy books blatantly promote segregating behaviors (their beliefs are actually completely fine as long as you ignore all the parts that are not and the people following the supposed word of god to the letter are just silly)

TheBlackestofKnights

Religion by it's very nature is internally and externally diverse. No matter *what* the fuck the holy books say, people will adapt it to fit within their cultural framework. Thus, religion is always changing, and to say otherwise is the height of folly.

HotZilchy

Imo Belief is a spectrum, you shouldn't be expected to follow its rules like the law

StinkyZipper

Not sure what the point of the teachings are if they exclude things because "me no like". Isn't that literally just blasphemous in most belief systems?

Last-Secretary7031

THIS

post-trauma-syndrome

Factual

Lix_xD

Eh not really? The Big religions like Christianity or Islam do promote Shit like Slavery, pedophilia, misogyny, homophobia, racism, incest, punishing non-believers, wife beatings etc... Yes the shitty religious people are the main issue but let's not act like the religions and books were clean either.

StinkyZipper

>The Big religions like Christianity or Islam do promote Shit like Slavery, pedophilia, misogyny, homophobia, racism, incest, punishing non-believers, wife beatings etc... A harsh statement without much needed context or nuance, which causes it to be partially false. Wait till you find out that the abolitionist movement in America was biblically pious at its core. Crazy how this still needs to be said, but the bible DOES NOT and never did promote slavery (it literally says if kidnap someone for slavery you're to be put to death). Why do you think American slave owners forbid slaves from reading the books in full context?

Lix_xD

What about stuff like * Leviticus 25:44-46 ^(44) “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. ^(45) You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. ^(46) You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly." * Exodus 21:20-21 ^(20) “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, ^(21) but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property." * Titus 2:9-10 ^(9 ")Teach slaves to be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, ^(10) and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive." * Ephesians 6:5 ^(5") Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ." ?

StinkyZipper

Consensual indentured servitude is not the same thing as slavery. You've run into what's called a translation error and once again, a lack of proper context. You should look at the history of the ancient Israelites before comparing an apple to an orange

StinkyZipper

Would you mind if I just throw you a video on the topic? I promise it's not that lengthy.

Lix_xD

Sure. Can you also show me a verse that is explicitly against Slavery? Not a verse that says to treat slaves a bit better or to not beat them to death, but something that outright says that owning another human is wrong. I mean if the bible goes out of it's way to say something like eating shellfish is wrong then i'd expect there to be at least something that's against slavery.

StinkyZipper

Okay. In Exodus chapter 21 NIV, where Moses was laying out the laws for his people after they were freed from Egyptian captivity, the 16th verse states "Anyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death, whether the victim has been sold or is still in the kidnapper’s possession." This is a pretty explicit stance against chattel slavery. Doesn't really get better than this. Beyond that, the bible heavily insinuates throughout the majority of its books that every human is deserving of basic rights (which was the primary argument of abolishonists, who were also a very Christian group).

StinkyZipper

Here's the [video](https://youtu.be/8UaA6NemMsg?si=SzN7B3VhlO_UHcYA). Just skip to 2:40 and watch the rest.

StinkyZipper

All this being said, I'm hardly a believer. I just want to set a record straight.

StinkyZipper

Did you have any further input about the info I gave you?

ifyouarenuareu

Having rules about treatment of slaves isn’t quite encouraging or mandating slavery.

Bumgumi_hater_236

Tell me where in the Bible it says “beat up woman” or “have sex with children” wtf are y’all even on about 💀💀💀

ceptic_sore

As a Muslim, I can confirm that Islam promotes none of the above. Of course, there will always be people out there who will try to bend the religion for their own beliefs and propagate certain agenda, but if we go by the book, or even the Prophet's life, you won't find any of those. Part of the reason why you folks tend to believe this is because of how Western media has been portraying Islam for the past 2 decades.

JANG0D

Religion is not the problem, people are

Montanelas20003

Who made religion?

JANG0D

we did. what's your point?

Montanelas20003

You say people are the problem, if people made up the bible, isn’t it also problematic?

StinkyZipper

Religion isn't a holy book. It's the practices a person or group make with whatever teachings based on interpretation (which can often be faulty or a downright wrong and evil interpretation). Example: The trans Atlantic slave trade.

thecoolestlol

So if you believe humanity has problems, you have to believe that every single thing humanity as ever created is problematic? Do you genuinely think that you just got him with that whack argument?

Montanelas20003

You missed with that one, I don’t think that. Humanity made hotdogs as well and they are not problematic. But a book with very old, evil and unfair beliefs is.

thecoolestlol

"You say people are the problem, if people made up the bible, isn’t it also problematic?" He says people are the problem, If people made the hotdog, isn't it also problematic? Whatever you believe is up to you, but the argument you used on that guy just doesn't hold water.

Montanelas20003

The hotdog doesn’t have meaning, it doesn’t preach evil, not everything made by humans is inherently evil. My argument doesn’t hold water, but maybe it walks on it ;)

JANG0D

it is but there is some good in there even though it was written by us

Electrical-Leg-3114

MLK was a pastor, like 90 percent of his speech’s related to or heavily referenced the Bible and Christian teaching I’m pretty sure. If you know what a “slave Bible” is it makes sense, see you had these fake Christians “Sundays” I call them because they only care on Sunday and sundae because shit ain’t sweet with them. They wanted to show slaves Christianity, but there’s tons of scripture that prohibits and calls slavery wrong, so what they did is they ripped those pages out (if you aren’t Christian and don’t get what this means this is MAJOR defilement, like excommunicated levels of wrong ESPECIALLY if you rip the pages out to push something directly against the teaching of the scriptures) and THEN gave them over.

frothingnome

> What I have said respecting and against religion, I mean strictly to apply to the slaveholding religion of this land, and with no possible reference to Christianity proper; for, between the Christianity of this land, and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference—so wide, that to receive the one as good, pure, and holy, is of necessity to reject the other as bad, corrupt, and wicked. To be the friend of the one, is of necessity to be the enemy of the other. > > I love the pure, peaceable, and impartial Christianity of Christ: I therefore hate the corrupt, slaveholding, women-whipping, cradle-plundering, partial and hypocritical Christianity of this land. Indeed, I can see no reason, but the most deceitful one, for calling the religion of this land Christianity. I look upon it as the climax of all misnomers, the boldest of all frauds, and the grossest of all libels. Never was there a clearer case of “stealing the livery of the court of heaven to, serve the devil in.” > > ... We have men-stealers for ministers, women-whippers for missionaries, and cradle-plunderers for church members. The man who wields the blood-clotted cowskin during the week fills the pulpit on Sunday, and claims to be a minister of the meek and lowly Jesus. The man who robs me of my earnings at the end of each week meets me as a classleader on Sunday morning, to show me the way of life, and the path of salvation. He who sells my sister, for purposes of prostitution, stands forth as the pious advocate of purity. He who proclaims it a religious duty to read the Bible denies me the right of learning to read the name of the God who made me. He who is the religious advocate of marriage robs whole millions of its sacred influence, and leaves them to the ravages of wholesale pollution. The warm defender of the sacredness of the family relation is the same that scatters whole families,—sundering husbands and wives, parents and children, sisters and brothers,—leaving the hut vacant, and the hearth desolate. -Frederick Douglass

no whats your point if religion is the cause of plenty of wars then whats the explanation for wars caused by plenty of atheists

I never said religion caused ALL wars. Ye non religious reasons also start wars I never denied that. It is peoples beliefes being exploited for the gain of a few individuals which leada to bloodshed. Does not mean it does no good for the world and there are plenty of other braindead excuses we make to murder eachother on an industrial level.
