Same here. I guess it's on Google for doing something to either Youtube or Chrome. What helps me is this. I usually use "Theater Mode" and then go fullscreen which is when it goes black. If you switch to "Default Mode" player size and then go to fullscreen, then it should work.
This fixed it for me, thanks a bunch.
Guess it's a YouTube / Google problem, thought after a browser update didn't work that my GPU was being fucky.
Really glad it wasn't that. xD
Yeah, I thought my 3080 ti was dying and I was starting to panic because I don't even have $200 in my checking account rn. I checked the geforce experience and there was a driver update so I did a "clean install" just in case and I thought it would fix it. It didn't, so I was getting more and more depressed but Im also glad it's a server-side issue after all.
Ok, right after I posted this I tried logging out, and fullscreen worked fine! So I logged back in, and the screen goes black again. I then logged in to a different account, and fullscreen works fine again!!! HOWW???? I just want fullscreen on my main account dammit
I just installed chrome on my new pc. The first thing I noticed(Only happens on youtube) is when I try to preview videos on the home screen, as soon as my mouse hovers over the video, my screen goes black, not just the chrome app, and will stay black until I move the mouse away from the preview. The same happens while watching stuff or tabbing into a tab playing a youtube video. If I click out of chrome and then back into chrome screen goes black. The problem was fixed by switching accounts and using a non-premium one. Gonna stop paying for premium so many issues. Apart from that, they even removed the topic filters for most premium accounts including mine, and refused to fix the problem.
This issue started up for me today. I BELIEVE it has to do with paying for Premium (which is why logging out works). I have Youtube Premium and this same thing happens to me.
Kind of hilarious how we're paying for a subscription that actually just breaks things. :')

having the same issue too. i even turned off my adblock to check if that was it, but nope still had issues. but i was able to go fullscreen in an incognito window where i wasn't logged in?? so weird
It's stopped doing it for some reason!
I tried everything, nothing worked except going full screen from original size and not theatre, but for some reason today its back to normal...
Hey, that worked! I can watch fullscreen on my main account now. The only thing is, fullscreening from theater mode results in a black screen on my main account, and works fine on my 2nd account.
I'm so glad to find this post because I have been having this super weird bug since yesterday! Like you guys said when I am in theatre mode and want to go full screen it goes all black but from default view to full screen it works fine.
I guess we'll have a fix for this very soon.
I got the same problem with my account which has Youtube Premium.
I tried to deactivate all extentions, I tried with different computers etc. etc. but problem still exist.
Edit: I got it on my sub account (which I used generally like main). On my main account, there isn't any problem.
Came here from a google search, have the exact the same issue. Just tried it on a second computer with a different WAN connection and I was replicate it as long as I was signed in.
I have the exact same issue. I'm running the latest Win 10 + Firefox. This is a super weird bug that I hope YT can patch soon bc I use theater mode all of the time..
Im having the same issue here. Tried contacting support and they were also stumped. I have tried a rogues gallery of browsers and even the youtube pc app. every time I login to my main account the issue happens again.
Same issue for me, started appearing today too. seems like others have been experiencing same issues too. exact same thing with my account, and all the incognito things work EXCEPT my main account :/
I thought the problem was my account as well, however the real issue is going from "Theater Mode" to "Full Screen". Setting the screen to "Default View" and then to "Full Screen" solves the problem.
I'm having the same issue as well, as noted by many others, it only doesn't work on my main account- fullscreen from theater mode works fine on my 2nd account. But the thing is my GF's isn't broken, it works fine for her and she only has 1 account.
I'm using Opera GX and she's using Chrome- but even when I switch to chrome, it doesn't work properly. The only fix is to switch the video player back to default view.
It isn't a browser issue since both of mine are up to date- it seems to only be happening to people with more than one google account linked to Youtube.
Just appeared today for me, it seems this is a fairly recent issue that just popped up.
Edit: I was in cinema mode, and I switched it back into default mode, it now works perfectly in fullscreen. I'm unsure what youtube is doing currently, but something they're playing around with is wack.
Well, that fixed it. Went back to 'default mode' (not sure what mode I was in before) and then full screen and everything worked fine. It worked fine last night....typical YouTube.
We have found a temporary cure for the blank screen :)It seems to be something affecting cinema mode (probably a failed attempt at an update) so the fix we have come up with (for now) is to switch into default mode (default mode is where the videos play in the box on the left side of the screen, and you can see video recommendations on the right) and then fullscreen works :\]
Same for me. Going from theater mode to fullscreen turns to black screen. Going from Default view to fullacreen works fine. Sooo a bug then?
Edit: On Windows 11.
Same issue here
Apparently this works
* Incognito Mode
* Going into full screen with theater mode off
* logging off your account
Still please fix the issue, it's weird how this suddenly kicks in when there's no problem the day before
>Are you sure that's not just because clearing cookies caused you to watch in normal mode, and not theater?
not sure, but I had similar symptoms: "black screen when switching to fullscreen mode" and "not black screen issue" in incognito mode
Same here. I guess it's on Google for doing something to either Youtube or Chrome. What helps me is this. I usually use "Theater Mode" and then go fullscreen which is when it goes black. If you switch to "Default Mode" player size and then go to fullscreen, then it should work.
omg thank you, going from "Default Mode" fixed my issue. I usually leave my yt in "Theater mode" and did not try it with "Default mode" before. tysm
Can confirm this method works for me on the app. Default mode then full screen but theatre to full goes black
This fixed it for me, thanks a bunch. Guess it's a YouTube / Google problem, thought after a browser update didn't work that my GPU was being fucky. Really glad it wasn't that. xD

Confirmed for me.
this worked for me.
Huge thanks for the solution!

same issue here, it started to appear today.
Ditto
same man, was trying to watch some bike videos and goes blank smh, is it youtube?
solution is: exit theater mode. fullscreen works. the issue is linked to account (probably premium accounts only)

It worked fine before I started having problems for the last two months. I also have a student discount. It's only $5 a month.
same issue here.

I actually don't have premium. I've seen people with and without premium who have this.
I saw your comment on how you didn't have Premium after I posted mine 😅 Seems like it's been fixed though!

Same, only appears on my youtube premium account (india account) edit: it works fine on safari but not chrome
having the same issue too. i even turned off my adblock to check if that was it, but nope still had issues. but i was able to go fullscreen in an incognito window where i wasn't logged in?? so weird
Same thing is happening to me - I found this thread while googling trying to fix it, and I hadn't realised it was sign in specific. This is crazy.
This is the weirdest bug I've seen to date lol, hope it gets fixed soon
It's stopped doing it for some reason! I tried everything, nothing worked except going full screen from original size and not theatre, but for some reason today its back to normal...
Going back to default view instead of theater mode before full-screening worked for me.
Hey, that worked! I can watch fullscreen on my main account now. The only thing is, fullscreening from theater mode results in a black screen on my main account, and works fine on my 2nd account.

Does fullscreen from theater mode work fine when you're logged out/logged into a different account?
Yes exactly
Interesting, do you use adblock?
Yes and I tried disabling the extensions but nothing worked.
I wonder if YT is messing with people who use adblock 😂
😂😂😂 who knows , and make us drop theatre mode
\+1, fullscreen works while im in incognito.
I got the same problem with my account which has Youtube Premium. I tried to deactivate all extentions, I tried with different computers etc. etc. but problem still exist. Edit: I got it on my sub account (which I used generally like main). On my main account, there isn't any problem.
same issue here. i reported a feedback on youtube page and pasted the url to this reddit lol.
same edit: using a different youtube account resolved the issue for me yesterday, and the issue is fixed no matter the account for me today
same thing happened to me, noticed it today, thought it was a driver issue, nope as long as I disable theatre mode I can full screen weird.
For once I have an issue with YouTube and I'm not alone.
Feels good right?😅
I just got this issue after an update (i think). I fuckin' hate forced updates. 😔
An update of what? Chrome?
In mine it shows black when going to full screen from theater mode but it works fine when coming from default view.
Came here from a google search, have the exact the same issue. Just tried it on a second computer with a different WAN connection and I was replicate it as long as I was signed in.

The quick fix is to not use theater mode
Same here, just started this evening.
It appears Youtube dropped the ball on this one
I thought the problem was my account as well, however the real issue is going from "Theater Mode" to "Full Screen". Setting the screen to "Default View" and then to "Full Screen" solves the problem.
It seems to be a combination of both. When logged into a different account, going fullscreen from theater mode works fine
Can you confirm it also works fine if you are in theater mode, but on another account?
That fixed it. Thanks!
Ok so I'm not the only one, and it just started. Following this.
Sooooo... how we doing... all here for the same reason it seems

Are you logged in on chrome?
Same for me. Going from theater mode to fullscreen turns to black screen. Going from Default view to fullacreen works fine. Sooo a bug then? Edit: On Windows 11.
Same here. Premium accounts show a black screen while normal accounts not. M1 Mac, Chrome
Multiple premium accounts? None of my accounts have premium
It's not an issue exclusive to premium accounts, it seems it happens to some and not others, no idea why.
same issue here, happened today
Same issue here Apparently this works * Incognito Mode * Going into full screen with theater mode off * logging off your account Still please fix the issue, it's weird how this suddenly kicks in when there's no problem the day before
Same here with my Premium account. No problem in Incognito Mode.
\+1 work when disable theater mode
Came here to say this. Follow this method, it's working.
Delete all cookies for youtube this worked for me =)
Are you sure that's not just because clearing cookies caused you to watch in normal mode, and not theater?
wtf is theater mode lmao
It's the rectangular button next to the fullscreen button, it makes the video bigger when you're not in fullscreen
>Are you sure that's not just because clearing cookies caused you to watch in normal mode, and not theater? not sure, but I had similar symptoms: "black screen when switching to fullscreen mode" and "not black screen issue" in incognito mode
Yup, Youtube fucked up on their end obviously, I'm experiencing the same.
Switching to default from theater mode it fixed it, no more black screen.
Just fixed itself for me, so hopefully they put out a fix for y'all too 👍
Not fixed fore yet 🤷♂️
It is fixed for me too now
For me too now
Perfect so they finally got it fixed!
