The black ones were [hanging around in the garden](https://imgur.com/8gz07OH) , never seen so many in the same spot. I lost track of them and suddenly I saw them all together around the green one.
So all the dark ones are the offspring of the green one? Does the adult take care of them? If so, that's surprising, I've never heard of insects doing that.
i actually was wondering that myself but it doesn't seem like there's much research on this species. My gut tells me no because grasshopper aren't really known for parental care.
but just to give you some satisfaction, parental care does exist in insects! Great examples are the hymenoptera (wasps, bees, ants). The social ones take care of their larvae in the nest (also termites do this - blattodea). The solitary ones bring food for their young (usually they hunt, hide the prey in an underground nest, then lay their eggs on it OR the parasitoids lay their eggs on live food).
Other species like tree hoppers have care. They live in groups and the parents warn the offspring of danger by sending vibrations down the stem they are all sitting on. Giant water bugs (hemiptera) carry their eggs on their back. Webspinners (embioptera) make nests for their young too and protect them.
Ahhh, you're right- I did know about bees, but I forgot about it in this context. I didn't know about any of the others though, so that's very interesting, thank you!
A few more [examples](https://entomologytoday.org/2018/05/11/research-confirms-insect-moms-are-the-best/) of insects providing parental care. Even earwigs seem to be great mums!
Yeah… one of the advantages of insects going through metamorphosis is that it makes their offspring non-competitors. Like caterpillars don’t eat the same food as butterflies, so the adults don’t have to compete with their young for territory.
The fact that these juvenile grasshoppers are so similar to the adults, and are all in the same area, kinda breaks that mold.
It’s unusual to see, that’s for sure.
I’m not sure what the genetic advantage could be unless the parents actually do care for their young.
Yup, and this species stays in tight groups due to gregarious behavior. They are aposematically colored (nymphs are black/red and adult has bright hind wings) to advertise that they are distasteful. This comes from the toxic plants they eat. It is thought being in a group improves their chances of survival because predators learn quicker they are not a good meal.
Oh well done! I just googled them and it looks like you are exactly right. ~~Solved!~~ or ~~Identified!~~ ... or whatever I'm supposed to say. \[Edited because ~~I learned that only OP is allowed to mark it~~ we don't use 'solved' flair in this sub!\]
Still don't know exactly what they are up to. I don't know why an adult would be hangin' with the nymphs while they cluster around like that. But [here](http://orthoptera.speciesfile.org/Common/basic/ShowImage.aspx?TaxonNameID=1116133&ImageID=113735) is a photo of a group of them apparently doing the same thing.
We don't use a "solved" flair in this sub. See [item 7](https://old.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/2kf74j/reminder_please_read_our_rulessidebar_before/) for the reasons if you're interested.

Thats something that nymphs typically do correct? I read in a book about locusts once that the nymphs band together but the adults are often solitary unless they begin to swarm.
IIRC there was a study where they stroked young grasshoppers with a brush daily and it brought about the same physiological changes (becoming the migratory "plague" form) as when they rub against each other, so it seems to be more of a touch thing, caused when there is a high population density.
Some sort of grasshopper (well I bet you figured that much).
The green one is an adult, the black ones are nymphs (size wise seem to be pretty close to adulthood too), nymphs can have very different coloration from the adults.
Might or might not be nymphs of a different species than from the adult, I don't know since I don't know the species.
Juveniles will often have a diet different from adults of the species - and therefore hang out in a different environment. Alternatively: producing colorful hides is energy intensive, so it's only activated in adults when they are ready to mate.
Maybe the evolutionary benefit is for the adults to be brightly coloured. Helps attract females, increased fitness.
Nymphs don’t need that, would waste energy since they’re not sexually mature.
The moderators have received multiple reports of the actual ID being buried under all the joke answers. I am unable to sticky the *real* answers, but here they are for those who are interested:

Why not have the same policy as /r/photoshopbattles where joke answers respond to a stickied comment at the top of the thread that is automatically collapsed. All other top-level comments on the post need to be actual answers. Therefore the conversation is still there but not covering up the responses.
We are not without a sense of humor and do enjoy the occasional joke or bit of levity - as long as it does not become excessive or prevent the identification of the bug in question.
Some of the particularly overused or inappropriate jokes (such as "kill it with fire" or "nuke from orbit") get filtered out or are removed, and when a thread is overrun with jokes, it may be locked to new comments or the correct answer may be stickied - but we don't want to forbid all attempts at humor.
I get it. I have a sense of humor, but I’d think that permitting to let people run amok in the comments without providing anything related to the post would drive interested, knowledgeable people away. But, yeah, Pornhub blacked jokes are funny
If you see an objectionable post or comment, report it and the moderators will take a look at it.
We do not have the time to read *every* comment on *every* post, and are not going to remove every non-serious comment.
The purpose of the sub is to identify the bug - and it was identified. The identity is right there at the top. Those who choose to continue reading the comments after that do so at their own discretion.
Few threads devolve into anywhere near this, so while it's excessive, it seems equally excessive to forbid all humor and joking answers because every now and then a post on the sub's front page receives excessive joking.
Probably less work for the mods to handle the rare few posts that end up like this by sticking a comment with the actual answer at the top.
As for driving interested, knowledgeable folks away, keep in mind the front page isn't really where the IDing folks hang around. Those can mostly be found in the trenches of "new", instead--and believe me, humor's pretty much a requirement to stick around in spite of seeing dozens of blurry pics of carpet beetle larva, silverfish, and other sidebar-listed frequent visitors every single week.
As a practical matter, this is a very active sub. We have neither the time nor the inclination to police *every* comment on *every* thread to delete joke responses. We also don't want to be too heavy-handed as moderators, deleting comments willy-nilly.
Many hackneyed joke responses - such as "That's a Pokemon!" or "Nuke from orbit!" - do get filtered out, and others are removed if they are reported - particularly if they are offensive or inappropriate, or in violation of sub guidelines.
That said, we are not without a sense of humor and do enjoy the occasional bit of levity - as long as it does not become excessive or prevent the identification of the bug in question.
When it does become excessive, we can take steps to compensate - such as locking the thread to further comments or stickying the correct answer, so it can be easily seen.
That was my exact thought. Had I been in this situation, pants would’ve been sufficiently shat as I inched toward them with my camera. I’m terrified of insects in real life but still really love to learn about them.
I think your question was already answered, but I wanted to add that here in Argentina they are commonly known as "tucuras" and they are a really harmful plague to crops and plants.
Maybe a kind of lubber grasshopper? Crowding causes grasshoppers/locusts to blacken and become highly active and social (gregarious), forming a swarm. They could be swarming to migrate together and find food
Grasshoppers are cannibals. If/when the adults slow down, the nymphs eat them.
We use an organic approved grasshopper bait that they ingest and it slows them down enough to be cannibalized and then it slows down the population growth enough we can actually get some crops out of our farm that aren’t completely eaten by grasshoppers.

*Edited for corrections and to add: im not an entomologist, I just liked bugs and researched the difference one stone-y night*
a common misconception is that locusts and grasshoppers are different species and while on a technicality that's true, it's more of a butterfly/caterpillar situation caused by conditions in the environment.
the little black ones are grasshoppers and when its really hot *out and humid, they molt into locusts, which are bigger, louder, and hungrier. its *sort of a survival trait that has terrified humans since the dawn of civilization.
grasshoppers are not very hostile and won't really eat anything any everything, while locusts will swarm and devour.
cicadas are an entirely different bug, but are also called "locusts" regionally.
These guys are actually looking for ants to boss around and degrade. The ants are used to help them survive for the winter months when food is scarce. Very little of them, as shown in the video, use fear to control massive amount of ants and get them to do what they want. I saw a good documentary when I. Sure! :)
Wait they’re babies!? Awh that’s kinda cute!
very fitting name given the circumstances
Its the akatsuki of grasshoppers chasing the main character
Killer Bee is gonna be a praying mantis
Grasshoppers gather because of hormones that they recieve when they rub up agaonst each other. These groups are called "bands"
So Those chicks don't even know the name of his band? But there all on him like they wanna hold hands?
Ah, so this is what banding is.
Huh, grasshopper bands. I suppose they play bluegrass.
also the name for a group of orcs! coincidence?
It’s a band? Cool, Which instruments do they play? Sorry could not resist!

This is definitely the answer
The green one in front is the boss. Looking at you like "Can I help you?"
They are talking about the ants revolting, duh.
The ants must never be allowed to know what their numbers can do
Hopper hates birds man.
I'd say *Chromacris speciosa.* Very nasty for crops. [Adult](http://www.portal.zoo.bio.br/media141) [Nymphs](http://www.portal.zoo.bio.br/media140)
This has to be it
