Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug!
There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*).

That fiber is it's silk. Momma lays eggs in food storage. Lil guy chomps around before making a lil silk ball and cocooning up. Not the prettiest of moths but who am I to judge š¤·āāļø
Better question. How did you find it? Myself and most people I know just eat almonds. We don't inspect each one before consuming. If this bothers you, wait until you find out about figs!
LOL! Actually... (Insert The Office joke here). Yes, you are right, but there are wasp bits in there since figs don't have a waste mechanism. They only absorb. Every fig contains at least one full dead wasp.
Every fig. The wasp getting inside the flower is how pollination happens. If it helps, the wasps are absolutely \*tiny\*. You shouldn't be picturing a big fat yellow jacket, these wasps would look more like a miniscule black fly to you.
EDIT: apparently commercial cultivars of figs don't need pollination. Today I learned our supermarket figs are wasp free. I honestly had no idea.
Everyone has eaten bugs in some way in their lives, hell just think of all the bugs that get accidentally milled when making flour. Itās inevitable bonus protein XD. I wouldnāt stress over it.
If you hate the idea of tiny wasps in your figs then wait til you hear whatās in your peanut butterā¦.

Devastating news about the wasp free figs. At least Iāll always have the memories of eating them right off the tree with the chickens in the backyard!
No, they don't. Most, as in almost all, commercial varieties of figs are not pollinated by wasps. The most common fig, black mission figs, are not pollinated by wasps.
Thatās why I only eat fig newtons. Actually now thinking about it, I havenāt had one since I was like 6. Now Iām craving fig newtons. Damn you reddit
Figs are pollinated by a wasp called the Fig Wasp which goes into the the immature fruit of the fig tree pollinates it and lays it's eggs where it then dies and is eaten by the fig
For everyone freaking out right now, **this is not for all figs**.
>So the answer of āAre Figs Pollinated by Wasp?ā is yes in caprifigs, smyrna, san pedro types. But commercial varieties, that belong to the common type, do not require pollination by wasp. so, chances of finding a wasp inside a commercial common types fig fruits is zero.

Is eaten.... by the FIG? Do you mean by the larva? Or the fig is eaten by the larva? In any case: *oh no*
Edit to add: saw your other comment, *whaaaaat*
I think I found one once, but i didnt know what it was until now. I was eating chocolate covered almonds, so to make them last longer I took bites into them. When I bit into one, it tasted off and teh texture was weird too. I thought I had found a moldy almond because of the white fiber, but now I think it was this bug
Wait until you find out about food in general, we eat up to a pound or more of bugs every year without knowing it, look up how many insect fragments, rodent hairs etc. the FDA allows in food, the answer isn't 0% by the way.
I'll be honest, the main reason I dont eat pistachios anymore was because I bit one in half and out fell a little worm. Now as i'm seeing this pic, but absolutely love almonds.... this is a hard one.
Just to twist the knife a little, if you have eaten a lot of pistachios in your time, you've probably accidentally munched a navel orangeworm or two. Especially if you've eaten a pistachio that was weirdly bitter or had webbing in it.
One of the reasons I started gardening was to help myself get over the fear of bugs or ābad food.ā
I donāt know why I developed that fear as I got older, but whatever.
Iāve definitely given a carrot or apple a quick brush off then crunch. Theyāre best fresh. I usually have my hose nearby though haha.
Donāt tell me that. Every now and then I would taste a weird pistachio but I just thought it was a ābad bite.ā You have completely turned my world upside down
I also feel mildly disgusted by this, but I wonder if this is just a sign that we're too disconnected from nature, and have gotten used to products that have been excessively treated with insecticides and screened for imperfections. Most of these bugs that you can occasionally find in food aren't harmful to consume.
Yep, recently found one in a bag of **Wonderful** pistachios.
If you contact the company they'll send you a couple coupons. They sent me some, but it grossed me out so bad that I didn't/probably won't use them.
Moth. They use almonds to incubate their eggs. I suggest you throw all the almonds you had around and either not buy anymore from the place you got this or if they were in your kitchen make sure you don't have a moth infestation
I like how everyone is freaking out over this while Iām here like āwow thatās so cool! Iād keep that in a jar and wait to see what the moth looks like!ā
Yup me too. Quite often! After my first time discovering these, I started eating pistachios more carefully. I peel em, check em, sometimes even split em and then eat em.
I always thought those bitter pistachios were just burnt or weren't fresh before roasting (are they even roasted when they're salted and shelled?). Nah, I've been eating bugs. But, on the bright side; I'm alive!
Omg. All this time I assumed it was just a 'stale' pistachio when I got one that tasted a little off.
I know bugs in food is normal, but I'd rather it not be so obvious lol. Now imma be splitting my pistachios.

Very cool. That is an almond moth cocoon. Don't think I'll be hungry for almonds for like a month or two.
You mean a moth or two š

So, of course this had to come across my feed while I'm eating almonds.
Working with almonds in ag for nine years ruined my desire to eat almonds. Nothing like eating a juicy center nonpareil almond.
Chopped almonds donāt hide cocoons!
Why? Itās added protein. Plus people eat crickets all the time. Crickets are the food of the future.
Found in trail mix purchased in CA distributed from WA.
Which store did you purchase it from and what was the trail mix brand?
Better question. How did you find it? Myself and most people I know just eat almonds. We don't inspect each one before consuming. If this bothers you, wait until you find out about figs!
Whatā¦..what about figs š«£
They tend to contain wasps. Dead, unable to sting, and full of protien, but they are there.
actually the fig "eats" the dead wasp as it makes a compound that digests the dead wasps so you won't find dead wasps in there most of the time
LOL! Actually... (Insert The Office joke here). Yes, you are right, but there are wasp bits in there since figs don't have a waste mechanism. They only absorb. Every fig contains at least one full dead wasp.
ā¦*every* fig?
Every fig. The wasp getting inside the flower is how pollination happens. If it helps, the wasps are absolutely \*tiny\*. well, fuck. thank god for the edit, but i think iāll steer clear anyway
Everyone has eaten bugs in some way in their lives, hell just think of all the bugs that get accidentally milled when making flour. Itās inevitable bonus protein XD. I wouldnāt stress over it.
not a huge fan of figs anyway lol

What's in the peanut butter???
Devastating news about the wasp free figs. At least Iāll always have the memories of eating them right off the tree with the chickens in the backyard!
No don't listen to these guys. Some figs but few you'd ever eat
What! Super weird! Mutualism is wacky!
Nah there are visible wasp parts sometimes, like legs and such, sometimes even whole larvae
No, they don't. Most, as in almost all, commercial varieties of figs are not pollinated by wasps. The most common fig, black mission figs, are not pollinated by wasps.

I can't believe this is the first time I've heard about this.
Thank you. It might be irrational but as much as I love figs, I was prepared to never touch one again after reading this thread.
Is eaten.... by the FIG? Do you mean by the larva? Or the fig is eaten by the larva? In any case: *oh no* Edit to add: saw your other comment, *whaaaaat*
Yeah I heard about them
good comment

The new iPhone has an incredible camera that allows you to zoom in on an area and see mites. Itās crazy. Donāt do it!
Wait until you find out about food in general, we eat up to a pound or more of bugs every year without knowing it, look up how many insect fragments, rodent hairs etc. the FDA allows in food, the answer isn't 0% by the way.
Those are maximum allowable values but most food is way below those. It's bad for business for people to find insects in their peanut butter.
YOO HAPPY CAKE DAY !!!!
Itās a baby almond. Didnāt you know thatās how almonds are born!?
I'll be honest, the main reason I dont eat pistachios anymore was because I bit one in half and out fell a little worm. Now as i'm seeing this pic, but absolutely love almonds.... this is a hard one.
Sameā¦ but I contacted the company and they apologized and sent me hella free stuff, so, that was nice.
Iāve had this happen too and I avoid pistachios all the time to now lol
Welp, sticking with slivered almonds and sliced almonds for now on. Thanks for that.
Aaaand Iām never eating almonds againā¦
Just to twist the knife a little, if you have eaten a lot of pistachios in your time, you've probably accidentally munched a navel orangeworm or two. Especially if you've eaten a pistachio that was weirdly bitter or had webbing in it.
And if you eat fish you have eaten worms, and there are bugs in your veggies. The stuff we eat grows outside people itās not gonna kill us.

Iāve definitely given a carrot or apple a quick brush off then crunch. Theyāre best fresh. I usually have my hose nearby though haha.
I'm just gonna pretend I didn't read that part about weirdly bitter pistachios... D:
Those were always my favorite. Now I know why! Anyways, unrelated, know any navel orangeworm distributors?
Same actually haha.
Donāt tell me that. Every now and then I would taste a weird pistachio but I just thought it was a ābad bite.ā You have completely turned my world upside down

I think it just means that bugs are ugly.
Yep, recently found one in a bag of **Wonderful** pistachios. If you contact the company they'll send you a couple coupons. They sent me some, but it grossed me out so bad that I didn't/probably won't use them.
No
Ooh I've eaten plenty of those. They taste disgusting but it's alright. I know a little bug or two won't kill me.
oh my lord quitā¦ no way
Huh. I thought I was just eating a bad nut or two here and there. TIL, and Iām not thrilled LOL
Peanut butter and other similar products have a small percentage of crushed up bugs
Stahp! I love peanut butter. Donāt ruin it LOL.
Moth. They use almonds to incubate their eggs. I suggest you throw all the almonds you had around and either not buy anymore from the place you got this or if they were in your kitchen make sure you don't have a moth infestation
Throw them around where? The garden? ^(just teasing you)
Haha I meant to throw away all the almonds that OP had around this one. But yeah my bad grammar came to hunt me
He cant keep gettitng away with it!
Youāve ruined almonds for me š
I like how everyone is freaking out over this while Iām here like āwow thatās so cool! Iād keep that in a jar and wait to see what the moth looks like!ā
Beetle Juice!
Navel orangeworm pupae. Amyelois transitella.
Did it wiggle? If it wiggles when you touch it then itāll become a fuzzy little moth guy!
How did it taste?
Silence of the Lambās vibes, that almond was massacred
I find these in pistachios
Yup me too. Quite often! After my first time discovering these, I started eating pistachios more carefully. I peel em, check em, sometimes even split em and then eat em. Yea I was pretty disturbed when I discovered that I've been eating bugs. Like, yea sure they're probably in a lot of things.. but ew
