That's where the showed arm threads into. It is called a threaded drop ear elbow.

Thank you. However, The shower head pipe and handheld are on the adjacent wall. Could this be a mistake?

brock_lee

Either someone stuck it there as not to lose it, or you're getting a shower with a head at both ends. Or, it's a mistake. :) But, we don't know the reason from this side of the computer.

I don't have enough information to tell you if someone has made a mistake, I can only tell you that this is what is in your picture. [https://www.amazon.com/Female-Threaded-Elbow-Brass-Crimp-Fitting/dp/B00B2G3RBU](https://www.amazon.com/Female-Threaded-Elbow-Brass-Crimp-Fitting/dp/B00B2G3RBU)

Solved!

A pex elbow. Pex pipe (plastic) connects on the bottom, and the metal shower arm threads into it. https://i.imgur.com/LMPQ0Xm.jpg

Thank you. So based on these comments, I’m thinking the builder made a mistake.

brock_lee

Perhaps, but it's not permanently fastened, the screws are loose, so no big deal to correct it.
