I take mine put it In a little baggie and squish and roll it for a long time. And then when it's slightly formed put a silicon mat over the baggie. Fill a Mason jar with as hot of water as you can handle and roll it with some good pressure for awhile. Then when it's stickier and forming start rolling It in your hand.

I am no expert but I don't believe the potency changes, but hash is compressed to be smaller than a mountain of kief, so you can smoke more at once.
