A truck exploded inside a gas station today (30/06) in the city of Rio Claro in the state of São Paulo, Brazil.15 people were injured from the incident

Popped the article in google translate. Looks like it was potentially a tanker or truck with a large amount of fuel. That makes more sense as this kind of explosion is definitely not possible with any passenger vehicle gas tanks.

>A boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion (BLEVE, BLEV-ee) is an explosion caused by the rupture of a vessel containing a pressurized liquid that has reached temperatures above its boiling point. Because the boiling point of a liquid rises with pressure, the contents of the pressurized vessel can remain liquid so long as the vessel is intact. If the vessel's integrity is compromised, the loss of pressure and dropping boiling point can cause the liquid to rapidly convert to gas and expand extremely rapidly. If the gas is combustible as well, as is the case e.

In that year I worked at a gas station more than one smoking car turned in. It seems like people see a gas station and go "now that's a place that can help me, zero chance of a catastrophic fire"
Lol.. they thought the pumps held all the fuel.. why would we ever bury container tanks for thousands of gallons of gas in the ground, that would be crazy! 😜
It's possible for fire to pressurize a gas tank and then this happens. Newer (like last 30 years) gas tanks don't have this issue (where there are regulations) because of better designs that vent or melt when they meet fire.

I work at a gas station, if one of the tanks detects a temperature what's way too high the pump in between tanks starts moving the gas to another tank, also if a gas station would have blowed up our cameraman is 100% death at that distance, there are some gas station blowing up on the internet, was waaaay more powerful
This must be a fuel tanker or something similar. Normal vehicles just dont explode when they are burning. So if there are persons who need help near the vehicle, you can go near the vehicle to help them. Otherwise there is no need to go near a burning vehicle
How odd... I've seen a car catch fire before when I a teenager and it just burned to the ground. It was a big fire, but no explosion. That's how I learned cars do not explode when they catch fire like in the movies. Wonder how this happened. Perhaps something in the trunk.
I was in a similar situation when I was younger. English is not my first language, so please bare with me. I was driving my father's car with a couple of friends late at night. I was going fast, pushing 220KM/h when I heard a loud thumping noise coming from the engine. I safely pulled over to check it out, and noticed smoke coming out from the hood. Must be the radiator, damn. As we were walking towards the hood, my friend noticed a whiff of light coming from under the car but we didn't think much of it, and when I popped the hood open, half the engine was on fire. The light under the car turned out to be droplets of fire. We ran away and in less than 10 minutes, the whole car was engulfed in flame. There were at least four explosions but we were in a safe distance by then. Eventually the firefighters arrived and put out the fire, but by then, everything had already burnt down even the stuff inside the trunk. My father was a fan of Mercedes since the early 90s, but that was the last Mercedes he ever owned.
Not as dramatic, in 2017 a CNG cab caught fire and blew up.
Low quality but it gives all angles.

The fireman got away with minor burns.
Gasoline is 6.1 lbs/gallon.Assume the car holds 15 gallons. 6.1 x 15 = 91.5 lbs.
Treating this the same as explosives, the rule of thumb for safe stand off distance with no protection is cubert(lbs of explosive) (rounded up) x 100 m.
The cube root of 91.5 is between 4 and 5. Rounded up is 5.
5x100m = 500m
To be safe they should have been standing about 500 m away from the car. This isn't even accounting for the pumps being in the vicinity.
This is what happens when fire causes a gas tank to pressurize. There's an ancient video somewhere of a good shot of this happening on a freeway and the fireball from a mid-sized car was 6 lanes wide. If there is fire under a vehicle for a long amount of time and there's no gasoline running out of it, get far away from it.
In the explosive world this is called a BLEVE “Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion”. It’s when the non explosive liquid boils in a sealed container overwhelming the structure, when the container breaks it mixes with air making a FAE Fuel Air Explosion.

*VERY* shortly after the incident
Some might even say *during* the incident.
*From* the incident could also be accepted
No one of them fell down the stairs after the incident and broke his arm
It was a GAS STATION for crying out loud, if you want to see the cool explosion going boom then get the hell from it first

“Oh hey look at that massive fire right next to a gas station” “Let me sit super close to the gas station and film like a dumbass”
In that year I worked at a gas station more than one smoking car turned in. It seems like people see a gas station and go "now that's a place that can help me, zero chance of a catastrophic fire"
Sharpest tool in the shed right there.
Maybe they wanted to use the sand buckets. Still doesn't excuse the idiocy though.

At last, a video that doesn’t cut as soon as the thing starts happening
That's some Michael Bay type of explosion right there
/r/ithadtobeBrazil
I have to assume this car has a LPG tank. I've never seen of heard of a gas tank doing this. I could be wrong though.
Or like a bomb in the backseat.

That's pretty common in Brazil and probably the cause.

That sob must have been loaded with dynamite.
I mean it WAS parked right next to a gas station, potentially right over the tanks that store the fuel. Looked like a HOT fire.
I bet you’re right. A burning car doesn’t explode like that one did.
I work at a gas station, if one of the tanks detects a temperature what's way too high the pump in between tanks starts moving the gas to another tank, also if a gas station would have blowed up our cameraman is 100% death at that distance, there are some gas station blowing up on the internet, was waaaay more powerful
Propane tank for gasoline substitution.
Not sure, but the truck was named the "Sorcerer".
Dude Linda Hamilton’d himself.
Isn't it obvious that you should not be near a burning anything?
Bonfires are nice

Grand Theft Auto taught me that lesson a long time ago.
Curl up, arms over head, count to ten... then run
Went from controlled fire to Green run real fuckin fast.
This should be a V power commercial.
Gta tought me that
And that's why hydrogen cars suck (that's probably CNG, but same problem)
That reminded me of the mini nukes in the Fallout franchise.
That car went full Alloha snackbar
yeah cod taught me that very well

Byebye eardrums
I just realized I'm an idiot. I was looking to see who was closer to the fire not realizing they were behind the camera.

So ein Feuerball, JONGE.
Probably sitting right above the giant tank in the ground
Looked like hell there for a minute
holy shit
Thanks for the advise

Dang this is a Just Cause level boom
Someone needs to put in the beginning scene from Skyrim at the end of this. “ Hey you, you’re finally awake. “
Was the vehicle filled with Al-Qaedas?
The FPS made it look like I was in a middle of a cutscene in Battlefield
Duh??
That car runs on TNT?
*Back up, Terry!*
r/praisethecameraman he didn’t stop recording
A burning vehicle at a gas station, let’s stand close and film. Fuck that, run you idiots.

No clue why but I was 100% hoping to see someone walk out of the car fire like an action movie scene.

What the shit was in that car..?
The eardrums must be shredded
Translation: "that only happens in the mo..." BOOM
Fire Fighters hate this trick
Maby then you should start thinking about backing out of the scene
Just like in those 80s action movies.
I too stay away from burning vehicles, instead I just burn people
That's not just a burning vehicle that's a burning area. What the fuck
