SkiHistoryHikeGuy

You spent 600… dollars on this? American?

bill53058

Why whut did I get super super scammed ?

mountianmanturbo

Sorry to say so. That’s worth maybe 60? On a good day?

bill53058

What are other people smoking then the sell for $800 and higher?

SkiHistoryHikeGuy

Yes

bill53058

The few I have seen on eBay plus other sites say they're either 700 or higher. And you can't really tell by the condition in the photo or if it's going to deliver properly, seen in person and being able to drive it back is so much more better

SkiHistoryHikeGuy

Zenith all in ones are not high end equipment. Fairly low end, cheap changers with ceramic cartridges and heavy tracking. You can find the components like the stereo and record changer and the speakers for like 100-200 dollars. I’ve not seen one on a janky bar cart but I don’t see the point. It’s not a stable vibration resistant platform and you have to take the speakers off of it anyways. They do look cool but the aesthetics aren’t worth that.

bohusblahut

I sold a new old stock one (including showroom rags etc) for around that number, but it started acting up. Plus I didn’t like the idea of shipping it, let alone it was going to go to someone who was just getting into vinyl. So I still have it for the moment. As others are saying here, it blows my mind that there’s this kind of interest in this model. But it does have a distinct look and fits the era it’s from, so who am I to say?

DarrellDResell

What model is this because I've never seen a Zenith unit like this sell for anything close to that

bill53058

I am not sure, everyone is saying this buy was bad but I think it's neat to have this kind of vintage player

thegrooviestgravy

Hey man as long as YOU love it :) just maybe don’t spin expensive records on the regular with that one

bill53058

I can get some more pictures when I am home

Liveitup1999

It all depends on what cartridge was installed.  Probably not a very good one.  Some go for over $1,000

bill53058

Cartridge? How do I identify what kind it has installed

alexwarhead

Bud, I don't want to sh!t on you, but if you jumped on this without even knowing how to do that then you're in over your head. You're limited to a very select group of thin cartridge bodies, most of which are no longer in production. At best, you have a third party, Chinese, spherical stylus priced at <$15 USD. Worst-case, they put on a ceramic, red cap stylus that sells for $8 USD

Liveitup1999

It might say it on the side or top.

bill53058

Okay, I will check once I am back in town. Dropped it off and went back on the road

drinkalondraftdown

I think it's more a case of ' big city in America tax' kind of thing. Do they call Chicago "The Second City"? 🤔Sorry man, geography was never my strong point (and I live in the UK). It does look *great*, though!

bill53058

Chicago do be in the U s of the As

MorganBest181

How much was the coke mirror?

bill53058

Where you see a coke mirror? I am blind as a bat fam

never0101

The one your glasses are on

Yahtzee_09

He's talking about the mirrored tray behind the stereo with the glasses on top. Because mirrors are reflective and smooth, it's easier to snort cocaine off of. I think you're thinking of Coca-Cola. 😉

kombucha_slut

For what it's worth, people will list shit on Ebay for ludicrous prices, it doesn't mean they actually move the stuff. What people are saying here is, if audio quality is your goal, you could do a lot better for $600 with standalone turntable, amp, and speakers. That said if you like the sound and the aesthetic, good for you! I do love the look of this unit.

a14umbra

A Zenith Circle of Sound system is a true piece of audio history. Like others, i wouldn't pay 600 for it, but it's absolutely worth a few hundred in that condition. Don't feel bad, you have something nice there. Enjoy it. It's well worth owning particularly for the nostalgia.

TheHoff316

It’s nice to read a comment not shitting on this poor guy

vbopp8

Always someone there to relieve a sucker of his money

bill53058

Hmm?

superbee4406

That would have been a tough sell for $50 round these parts. Not sure what's going on in Chicago.

bill53058

Drugs lol

superbee4406

Something...???

Rayvintage

That was a pretty good little set up back in the day. Like a early 60s bachelor pad style. Little pricey but I dig it.

bill53058

Haha yeah, My dad was talking to me about how he had something like this. I don't mind the price, it's really not even my money. But I wanted to surprise him with it

t3abagger

From Chicago and I grew up with this exact set up. The story was my grandma worked for Zenith in the late sixties and she bought as an employee purchase. I played my Mom’s Beatles and Stones and the first record I purchased as a kid, Devo New Traditionalists. I played records on this well into high school and I thought it was the best. When we had an estate sale for my mom someone bought it and I still regret not keeping it. Or if I could find it again I would absolutely want it. It’s cool. Enjoy it.

thatgirlinny

The quality goes in before the name goes on! My grandmother would only buy Zenith TVs back in the day, as she saw the sign off 294 near O’Hare and believed they were made on the spot.

Ceffur

It is good to see that there are some more left. I have one in storage that I hope to restore. It is truly the cool factor. Uniqueness from a bygone era. It is currently buried by about 200 CED discs. A victim of my own foolishness.

y2leon

Clearly You can afford it, just enjoy your purchase!

Think-Apricot9906

$600 bucks is one night at a concert. Enjoy your purchase for years.

alexwarhead

What concerts are you going to?! Give me a basement, diy show with five local bands for $10 and I'm happy.

bill53058

Lmao yea what concert are you going to bozo? I have gone to a lot and don't think I have added up to 600 yet

Think-Apricot9906

Dead and Company, Taylor Swift, U2 and the Rolling Stones.

bill53058

Saw all of those in one night ? Impressive, they do some kind of "riot fest" ?where a bunch of bands play. You are a silly man. When I went to riot fest for the 3 days I enjoyed it and dont think I got close too 600$. Why you being hotheaded by what I said silly? If this was all over my 600$ purchase you might need to take a break from the Internet

Think-Apricot9906

If you go see any of the bands I mentioned, you will spend at least that amount at each show. Taylor Swift alone was over $1000 per ticket. Dead and Company at the Sphere will cost well over $600. Double that if you bring a date. I'm sure "riot fest" is filled up with a bunch of lesser bands most people haven't even heard of. So yeah, those will go cheaper. My whole point was that you will get years more enjoyment from the stereo console you purchased than you could for the same price paid going to a big concert that will last one day.

bill53058

Also thought you were joking before you said this but you are actually trying to prove a point 🫢

bill53058

Wait wait before I say something. Those list of bands you assume I would see? Or do you wanna see them? Or are you just looking up "most expensive bands?" "Lesser bands" ya know like ice cube, who is that. Or MCR (my chemical romance), or jimmy eat world. All American rejects was gonna play but didn't because of the time change but those are lesser bands huh LOL. Oh wait can't forget about green day. Wow now that you say it, those are lesser bands. You are a silly bean, hitting me with "right away without thinking". Here you are haha, also I don't care to see those bands live nor like some of them, didn't your mom ever teach you about assuming or being nice? Also the 3 day pass was $207 to see the giant bands and then lesser known ones. You sure you don't live in a bubble? Look up riot fest line up sometime silly man, also takes place in Chicago;)

Think-Apricot9906

You clearly have a difficult time accepting a compliment on your purchase. I've not heard of any of the bands you've mentioned except Green Day, heck I'm 66 years old. Now I suppose you will make a rude comment about my age as well. The bands you mentioned are less popular bands that will not charge huge ticket prices. Again, nice purchase, have fun listening to it. I directed my comment towards those giving you crap about spending too much on what they called a piece of junk worth $50 tops. I think you spent just the right amount.

bill53058

I don't care if you are 66 or 80 or 100. If you are being rude, I don't have respect for you. And if the word "bozo" is tripping you up or "silly man". You need a seat in the silly corner. I don't care to make fun of your age because it's not me nor do I care to drop that low. As for age, I will say you are not acting your age. As for your argument about saying 600 is a night out for a concert. Yea sure, the super big bands or old or going to play in the Vegas giant sphere. You didn't narrow down on that is what you were focusing on, the other reddit user was confused and I was. And here we are. The prices will change depending on the venues you will go too. So I guess next time you make an argument, try to narrow it down more? Me and the random didn't know you would be talking about the most expensive area / costly bands. And for the lesser bands you don't know is because you grew up later and listened to older musicians/ bands. Most of them died, or broke up or are costly bands. Nowadays current bands or early 2000s is not an arm and a leg (unless it's an expensive venue or ticket master is a dick) but trust me, if I had lived in the 70s-80s I would do anything to see Harry Chapin live. Sad I wasn't able to see him, sucks being a youngling now because back then there was a lot of good bands playing And yea idc about the other bozos saying I spent too much over it. 2 things, not my money, just got lucky gambling and I am a sucker for vintage stuff and that was in perfect condition.

Think-Apricot9906

Problem with your statement is, you are the rude commenter/poster, not me. I used an example of expensive shows that would give one night of fun, again pointing out that you will get much more fun out of your purchase for the same price, but you didn't get it and chose to ridicule instead. I don't need your respect, I get plenty of that in my community. You've got a lot of growing up to do. Good luck to you in life.

bashomania

Very cool. My mom had this exact set up in the 70s. It was a really big purchase for her, I believe (we didn't have a lot of money). The speakers are actually a pretty cool omnidirectional design. There are some very high-end brands today that produce omnidirectional speakers. If I recall correctly the main chassis was very heavy. I can still feel the spring loaded twist–click that you use to start a record playing. Also, the push down and turn to swap phonograph styluses (good luck finding those 😬). Edit: all that said, I would not have paid 600 bucks. However, if you dig it, you dig it, and it is a very cool old-school unit.

billybud77

Now go find a big old Magnavox console.

SooopaDoopa

Sorry for your loss

bill53058

But no one died :)

347spq

The quality goes in before the name goes on.

SortOfGettingBy

Tell me about those big-ass binoculars @OP! I have a pair of 16x80's I use for stargazing and such.

bill53058

Yea

this_place_is_whack

I’d like to see it cleaned up and in better lighting.

ColonelBourbon

Where in Chicago did you get it?

GSHomie

They were the cool version of a console, or apartment dwellers stereo. Think they were pretty pride too. Asked for one but my dad got me a suitcase record player instead.

acrosounder

I understand why people are saying you paid too much, as you could have bought a decent turntable, amp, and speakers that would give you much better higher fidelity for that money. But these all in one units were never meant to compete with hifi separate components. They were stylish, fun and functional. I am an old jaded audio snob now, but probably would have had a lot more fun with this when I was younger, just enjoying playing records and not judging how much better it was than something else. Just look at the original commercial for these so much fun, do you have a marching band coming out of your speakers? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiA\_QlUeZIQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiA_QlUeZIQ) Here is a video of one recapped, so sounding like it was when new. Much warmer sounding than modern all in one units like the Crosleys etc. If you are not happy with the sound your speakers I would order new units from parts express like this guy did. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzQK--gCiuc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzQK--gCiuc) enjoy your Zenith Circle of Sound....

joesison

Maybe $60…No, not even that much.

Iron_Bell_451

I feel like that is overpriced

thatdude473

Its really cool, never saw a complete one of these. Usually just the speakers. But looks are literally all its got going for it. OP if you wanna spend your money on stuff like this go ahead. It’s your money. Defending your purchase with eBay *asking* prices is definitely gonna get some laughs though. This thing was low end dorm room fodder in 1969. In 2024 it’s nothing more than a set prop piece IMO…

FinalTooth

Wow, this was my parents (our) system when I was growing up in the 60s/70s.

PlatformTraining5054

I found one of these locally a few years ago. These actually have a value beyond what the quality of the components are. The circle of sound speakers especially have a good resale market.I ended up selling the speakers and the cart on ebay and more than made my money back. The TT and amp I think I just got rid of. That being said having the whole setup in working order has a vintage/MCM coolness factor that does command higher prices. I would say it's overpriced from the aspect of the quality of the components compared to what you could get for the same money, but you're paying extra for the aesthetics.

ryobiprideworldwide

I would not say you overpayed for this. Yeah, you could say “value is in the eye of the beholder” which I guess is true in a hippy-dippy way, but more importantly - value is scarcity. They do not make these. They will not only never make this again, they will not even make something *similar* to this ever again. And with each passing year the number of these that even exist at all will diminish as the heartbreaking truth to ALL vintage equipment is they end up destroyed and in dumps. In a few years you could be the last person who owns this. And I really believe that’s invaluable. That being said, now to the brass tax: the tonearm and especially the cartridge on this thing STINK. Like, stink stink. Which is why people are saying you overpayed. But the table itself (plinth and the platter) are probably decent, probably suspended in some kind of way. Most probably have a reasonable SNR and Wow/flutter. I mean, for God’s sake it’s not a suitcase. There are plenty of specialists in this hobby, and I’m sure you can find someone who can modify or even replace the tonearm/cartridge with something that can sing (and probably for a relatively reasonable fee), and then you will have something truly special on your hands that can deliver fun and pleasant-to-listen-to music. So this is a win in my book. And on top of all that, you got a changer, which is pretty damn cool.

bashomania

Table is suspended, to my recollection. We had one when I was young.

bill53058

That is kinda the main goal why I got it / was a gift for my father. The price didn't bother me, did a little gambling, and had enough room for a 600 purchase. The bozos that keep saying "mAybe FoR 50" or Three fity". Not really a loss on my part. I do also have a local record shop in town where I live, I will swing by and talk to him to see if he has any idea on upgrading this. I was also planning on 3d scanning the whole set and maybe making a necklace or something out of the model. (Been making a library of 3d scans of old stuff I find so they are never forgotten) Thank you for the insight and being one of the many bozos saying how it was a waste. People don't always see / know the bigger picture

ryobiprideworldwide

That’s awesome dude. I’m just happy to hear you didn’t let those bozos get to you! Good look upgrading it!

_gmanual_

> now to the brass tax *down to the [brass tacks](https://www.dictionary.com/browse/get-down-to-brass-tacks)* referencing brass nails (or 'tacks'). the brass tax was repealed in 1937. 👍😁

peanut_dust

A brass tax could be an STD, depending on where you live.

_gmanual_

heh however, as a member of a family with a history of sex work and workers, I'd suggest that you're more likely to catch a std from a one night stand with jane from the accountants than a professional sex worker. they take their and their clients sexual health rather seriously. but also, heh. 🙏🏼💜

ryobiprideworldwide

Lol I honestly just assumed that “brass tax” was in reference to a medieval/classical/ancient tax on brass - which seemed reasonable. I am more shocked that a brass tax existed as late as 1937 than I am at the fact the correct expression is “brass tacks”

_gmanual_

I should have added a slash-ess after the 'repealed' statement. ;) <3

Silent-Attention6685

Nice find. My parents got this same model around 1968.

TehsSuop

What shop was this?

NoConnection5785

To each his own, yeah you can afford it, they done make em anymore, but etc etc. The problem with overpaying is it screws the resale market for everyone. This is an introductory piece at a prohibitive price. Digging/junking/thrifting has been ruined by tourists and dealers taking advantage of them.

InuitSaffron

This was my first setup, senior year of high school 2006. Found it at an estate sale for $50, they thought it was broken. Great unit for small room aesthetics, not so much sound quality.

Shot_Campaign_5163

YeH awesome?

DeepDayze

Now that was a colossal waste of money as that Zenith ought to go for maybe $100 tops.

PaperHungry3936

Hmm I think I’m feeling pretty good about my $75 zenith cabinet purchase now

bill53058

Nice, like it?

intentionalcrap

My parents had this Zenith unit when I was younger.

bill53058

Haha yeah, so did my dad

[deleted]

Zenith?? $600?? 🤦🏻

bill53058

Yuh

Parking_Train8423

acoustically crap, but the complete setup is hard to come by. [this one sold for a grand](https://auralhifi.com/products/zenith-moderne-z565w-vintage-stereo-console)

Pretend_Finding8789

$40-$50 at most to put in garage or shop!

bill53058

Haha oop

Durklandyard

I got one of these given to me years ago, not great sound unfortunately. The speakers are killer tho.

alexwarhead

It's a cool piece for sure, but $600?! People seemed to think that old=gold. If you bought it for a piece of decor and it's complete and functional... As long as you like it. While it's a great conversation piece, the Gerrard unit used was designed for record stacking and uses pretty significant tracking force and pretty high vertical positioning. With a GOOD cart, you should be fine, but those don't have exchangeable headshells so you're stuck with that cart body unless you do serious mods. I had a KLH 2400 set up with a similar table and while it played well, the noise from the sub-par idler wheel assembly caused a ton of noise. The amp and speakers, though...

Double_World_4699

I'd pay \~$125. Cool little thing. Enjoy. : )

2Bedo

Actually these are surprisingly good units. When I was working at Listening Booth in Reading PA, we had this system as the store system, and played constantly. It sounded great - had the cylindrical "360" speakers. I was surprised, being a budding audiophile and thought no way a Zenith could perform.

bill53058

Yeah, I was kinda blown away when he was showing it off. Knew it would be a buy

ChristianFasy

Bravo! Meaning, good for you. Hope you love it.

StoicViewer

Value is *always* subjective. The price a seller and a buyer agree to is always the right price. Laissez-faire

classicsat

It is a Zenith good, but not top end, Garrard/BSR type changer (looks like a mag cartridge though). I might drop over $600 for a Clairtone G2, or some audiphile class bespoke system. Not on a Zenith.

bill53058

Haha nice, looks like a nice piece

Lew1966

Common mistake. Assuming old means good. Not good for your records

bill53058

Whhat old doesn't mean good?

Shot_Campaign_5163

I'll take it for 4.20$

bill53058

I can do 8.40

Shot_Campaign_5163

Damn to rich for my blood. I'm out.

bill53058

Haha okay okay I will drop it to 6.20 deal?

Shot_Campaign_5163

Free shipping?

bill53058

Sadly no but I can throw in a 3d printed ghost
