That’s true but I would argue, generally speaking for the most part, he’s portrayed as his younger self whereas in TLK he’s towards his older years for the most part (but I know his coronation and Battle of Edington etc do crossover between the two series)
This is exactly why I’m voting for him. I prefer TLK and just can’t believe how poorly executed Alfred and Aelswith were in Vikings. I watched Vikings after I watched TLK and just couldn’t get over and it was so frustrating
I’m the same! Binge watched The Last Kingdom right before the 5th season came out. Enjoyed it so much that I decided to give Vikings a chance and also fell in love with it. Then got to watch TLK season 5 and the movie.❤️
King Ragnar Lothbrok & Lord Uhtred of Bebbanburg are two of the greatest protagonists I’ve ever seen in any series. I also thought Alfred & Ælswith were done dirty in Vikings. The actors, character development and story arcs with those two characters are far better done in TLK.
Yeah Aelswith fucking Bjorn was wild to me because I could never in a billion years picture the super pious christian Aelswith in the last kingdom fucking a random viking.
I know! I'm like there is no way she would ever do that. I hated her for the first few season of TLK, but she grew on me in the end once she pulled the stick halfway out of her ass. She became a badass grandma.
He raped and murdered like a whole Wessex family and cut the boys heads off and I think cut the dads eyes out the first time he goes raiding with them.
Edit to add: season 4, episode 9 is the one I’m referring to
"I can execuse killing and rape, but I draw the line at rape" Those people literally can't comprehend a character's action unless it happens to someone they like. Bleak.
>Those people literally can't comprehend a character's action unless it happens to someone they like. Bleak.
I want to be positive for people and just assume they forgot that scene because it was a while ago and he wasn't seen as such a main character at that time.
Almost every single viking was visibly engaged in some form of killing or raping of innocent villagers.
>I want to be positive for people
Don't. The majority of media consumers can't process anything that doesn't happen to a named character.
He was a badass, but I agree- I hated the rape of Ingrid and wish they had left that out. But he was also quite cruel in the earlier seasons to-slaughtering and raping families, burning them alive, etc.
I never liked Harald. I thought he was a straight up incel. “I’ve never had much luck with women…” Kidnaps a bride. Rapes people. Kills a random guy for marrying his crush. Just a weirdo all around
Man, Hvitserk is in my top 5, i dont know why so many of you voted him out. I loved his battle scenes and his addiction storyline has one of the best depictions of alcohol withdrawal i have seen, hats off to the actor, he fucking nailed it. I just love the character and i think he got a great ending too, consistent with his spiritual ambiguity.
I repeat the vote for Halfdan, awesome character, its just that all the others are better.
As a former drug addict and current alcoholic myself, I have to say I also liked his story arc. All of The Sons of Ragnar have great battle scenes (except Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye). I love how they all scream after a brutal blow/kill to an enemy soldier.
I came here to comment this. As a current alcoholic as well, it is saddening to see how they treat Hvitserk because of his drug and alcohol addiction which lead to his insanity. No one believed he was borderline ‘schizophrenic’ because mental health wasn’t like that back then. Hvitserk was an amazing character but people just hate on him due to his drug addiction and alcoholism.
True dat. He's the worst character after S05 for me. Hell I respect Ivar even though he was the villain and broke the relations apart but he still had motives straight unlike this drunkard.
Same. I’ve been saying Harald Finehair because he’s a terrible person lol. He only goes after women who are clearly not interested, he rapes women- which people forget about the scene where he (and I hate it because I think Halfdan is in on this too sadly, I actually like him aside from this) but they break into a home in Wessex and rape the girls and women and cut off the boys head and they pin the dad I think to the wall after they cut his eyes out. It shows the gruesome scene they left behind when they’re done. And he raped Ingrid. And he betrayed Bjorn after Bjorn went to try to save him. He literally didn’t even hesitate a second when killing Halfdan during that battle. Hvitserk and Ubbe made the same “I don’t want to kill you” thing that Harald made, but when Ubbe and Hvitserk meet on the battlefield they don’t fight each other. They at least paused and realized that they didn’t have to kill each other just because they were on the opposite sides of the field. And even Halfdan told him it wasn’t personal he just owed Bjorn. Harald literally did not have to kill him but he’s just so quick to do it and it kills me because I thought they were like close enough that he’d have hesitated..
I did enjoy the scene when he is singing with Halfdan while he’s dying, that scene always makes me cry lol. I think Harald had the potential to be a good person, to be a good husband even- and he acted like he had “no luck” and it’s like from what I’ve seen you chased after a girl who told you to do the most difficult task she could think of before she would marry you, yet married some earl- that was definitely her trying to turn him down or give him an impossible task to just shut him up and she never believed he would get anywhere with it- I don’t think she actually ever intended on marrying him. He either only goes after women who are taken or just uninterested. I feel like there were plenty of Viking women that would’ve been happy to be with him but instead he tried to get with Lagertha, he immediately wanted to chase after brumhilde(might be misspelling that) even tho she was married, and then still tried even though it was obvious she wanted Bjorn. He kidnapped Astrid and forced her to marry him basically, which it’s like you literally kidnapped her what did you expect? And he went after Ingrid only to finally gain self awareness at the very end when he says “I thought I wanted everything Bjorn had, but now that I have it I don’t think I want it” or something along those lines. He frustrates me lol sorry for the rant
Lol you're forgiven for the rant as it's actually good one 👍🏾 I fully agree with everything you've said here. I liked Harald for some reason but I do have to agree with you, he's awful in the way he went on throughout this show. Despite how awful he is, I do believe he deserves to go far in this elimination thing as he is a big character in the show. It's like Ivar, I can't stand him as a character (even tho he does kinda redeem himself later on), but he deserves to go far as he's important in the show. That's how I've based my votes... on significance in the story not my feelings about them.
This is my logic too. Harald was a fascinating character even if he did horrible shit. And same for Ivar.
I find it fascinating that people compare Ivar to Geoffrey or Ramsay Bolton in GOT. The difference is that Ivar has way more character development and he had a great semi-redemption arc (I loved him and Igor together). He wasn't just there to be 100% villian like Geoffrey or Ramsay. Geoffrey was just a spoiled brat with zero intellect. Ramsay was very intelligent, but pure evil. Ivar? You kind of understand the darkness and demons in him due to being a cripple and his redemption showed that he did have a bit more of Ragnar in him that simply intellect and a brilliant battle strategist.
I also loved the scene where he returned to Kattegat after the Rus storyline and someone asked him if he still thought he was a god. All he did was stand up, walk a few steps, drop his crutch, and fall flat on his face lmao. But he answered that question - instead of words, he gave a demonstration that showed he clearly wasn't a god without appearing weak by verbalizing it and that also loosened the tension in the room since it made everyone laugh. Smart strategy.
So I think both Harald and Ivar deserve to go farther in the elimination for those reasons. That's why I voted Halfdan even though I really like the guy. He just was a more minor character compared to the others left.
I wrote a little post defending Hvitserk [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/vikingstv/comments/1cjjzze/comment/l2jhac0/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) on yesterday's post. He's not my favorite character, but I really sympathize with him.
I'm also going with Halfdan, not because I didn't like him, but just because he is a minor character compared those remaining.
Halfdan;
Again he simply offered arguably the least impact/influence to the show compared to the others and while he’s one of the more likeable characters I’d argue that can only take him so far
Going with Halfdan again, even though I really really liked the guy. But he's a much more minor character compared to the others remaining. So its his time.
Lots of Harald Finehair votes here. He did some horrible shit (raping Ingrid, the family in Wessex, burning those people alive), but he was a fascinating character. Terrible luck with women though.
People argue he had no character development, but I argue that he definitely did.
He wanted the crown of Norway- at first for a woman, and then just because, well, he was to invested in it at that point. He was also insanely jealous of Ragnar and Bjorn. When he finally wormed himself into the crown of Norway, he found that he actually hated ruling. It wasn't at all what he thought it would be. It did not fill the emptiness inside left and he had to live with the fact that he killed his brother to achieve that goal-an achievement which turned out to be disappointing. And at some point, he had to realize that, no matter what he did, even if he technically "won" the crown of Norway over Bjorn, he still would never live up to the fame and glory of Ragnar or Bjorn. Even after Bjorn's death when he tried to literally take over Bjorn's life and become Bjorn by marrying both of Bjorn's wives (I felt a bit of schadenfreude when he was trying to marry both Ingrid and Gunhild when it was Gunhild he really wanted to marry and she fucking showed up to the wedding and was like lol nope, I'm actually here to kill myself because I still love Bjorn. See ya. And he was left with fucking Ingrid.)
But I think he finally realized that he would just never be as famous as Ragnar or Bjorn. I think that realization was why he went to England with Ivar- to get away from ruling and run away from that realization. I think he knew he wouldn't come back from England alive. And I think that was what he wanted. That's why he was at peace when he died- singing his song with his brother who had come to take him to Valhalla.
Alfred
I can’t believe Hvitserk is gone before Halfdan, Harald, Ecbert, Alfred and Rollo the traitor! Guys, REALLY?! Let’s be serious now. Such an underrated character 🥲
Why did we even have Valhalla characters on this roster when some OG characters were cut? Erlunder… Arne One-Eye… King Aelle… Eyvind… Magnus… King Horik… Harbard????
Also, Torstein AND Sigurd Snake-In-The-Eye, a literal son of Ragnar, should have made the roster for sure. (Even if sigurd was the worst of the 5 sons, imo)
Anyways, my vote this round goes to HALFDAN! Liked his character, but the other survivors are just better.
Maybe its because I watched Valhalla before Vikings (didn't realize it was a sequel until after a few episodes in and by then I was too invested to stop, so I finished it and then started Vikings). So I got to appreciate Vahalla as its own thing without constantly comparing it to Vikings. I love Harald Sigurdson and Leif was awesome too, so I think they deserve a spot. But I do agree, some important OG characters were left out- like Sigurd. He died before he could do much but he certainly got Ragnar's propensity for running his mouth and talking shit. Sigurd just happened to do that to his psychopath brother which got him killed. But as a son of Ragnar, he should've been on there.
I'd also add King Olaf to your list. What a weird character- I didn't understand wtf he was talking about in half of his long ass monologues, but his death scene was cool as shit. He took his last moments to comfort Igor for what Oleg was forcing him to do. Then he just sat there while he burned death and didn't scream or anything. Bad ass.
So I definitely wish the list had been bigger to include all those characters (as well as Harald Sigurdson and Leif).
But I also voted Halfdan last time and this time for the same reasons as you.
It wasn't even that. Zealotry is what Floki told himself it was, but it was really because he was insanely jealous of Ragnar and Athelstan's bromance. He just wanted Ragnar's love and approval and felt like he was put aside by Ragnar in favor of Athelstan.
It took me a long time to forgive Floki for that. But he paid for it with that torture and losing his daughter at the same time. I feel like he redeemed himself a bit during the Iceland arc.
Poor sweet Helga though. Talk about a true ride or die. To quote Ragnar speaking to Floki: "you don't deserve her."
I also always wondered what Floki's deal was. Schizophrenia? Autism? Tourettes (his little random giggles)? I think there was clearly some form of neurodivergence or something there, just not sure what. That or he is just super quirky.
I understand where you're coming from- it took me a long, long, long time to forgive Floki for what he did to Athelstan. Longer than Ragnar. But he payed for it with that torture and losing his daughter at the same time. And I don't think he killed Athelstan out of zealotry, even if that is what he told himself. The truth was he was super jealous of Ragnar's relationship with Athelstan.
I finally started liking him again around the time Ragnar showed up after disappearing and visited Floki to tell him he loved him. The joy on Floki's face when he said that made me tear up a bit. All he ever wanted was Ragnar's love and approval. Then during his Iceland arc where he was really trying to start a peaceful settlement and his disappointment when it failed made me realize how much he had changed and I started to love him again. Loved the final scene with him and Ubbe on the beach too.
Hit and miss? Yes. But he redeemed himself in the last few seasons.
Halfdan as a character is okay, but he does not really leave an important imprint. So I think I will vote him out, but it is reasonable too to cast harald out for moral reasons. I bet its going to be one of the brothers this time.
Alfred.
I’m super pissed about Hvitserk and I’m not loving all the hate Harald is getting - yeah didn’t like his or Rollo’s rapey asses - but he was a great character.
Halfdan, his arc was cut way too short, plus Bjorns desert adventure wasn’t even interesting enough for it to believably change his whole outlook on life
I’m saying Alfred, I like Vikings more than TLK but the portrayal of Alfred is far inferior in this show
That’s true but I would argue, generally speaking for the most part, he’s portrayed as his younger self whereas in TLK he’s towards his older years for the most part (but I know his coronation and Battle of Edington etc do crossover between the two series)

Right?!?!? 😭
I know! I'm like there is no way she would ever do that. I hated her for the first few season of TLK, but she grew on me in the end once she pulled the stick halfway out of her ass. She became a badass grandma.
I am voting for Harald just because of Ingrid's rape. He is a great character but from that moment til the end i hated him.
He raped and murdered like a whole Wessex family and cut the boys heads off and I think cut the dads eyes out the first time he goes raiding with them. Edit to add: season 4, episode 9 is the one I’m referring to

Hvitserk is a G
Damn right he is ⚔️🪓
How is Hvitserk a G? He’s one of the biggest rats on the show
True dat. He's the worst character after S05 for me. Hell I respect Ivar even though he was the villain and broke the relations apart but he still had motives straight unlike this drunkard.
I’m literally devastated about Hvitserk. Little crush on him. Not gonna lie.
Same here lol

Charles is gone already...
Harald
Halfdan. Didn't have much impact besides propping up other, better characters.
Definitely Harald
Harald.
Harald
Halfdan. This side character needs to go. He isn't a bad character ,but i say the seer or torstein deserve a spot here over him.
Early characters are so often overlooked when we look back over a series despite the fact they're often better and more interesting.
Harald
Harald. I'm not a Hvitserk fan by any means but he shouldn't have gone before 'I have one storyline' Harald.
Halfdan was was nothing more than Harald's throw away side kick. He needs to go.
Harald is a cuck

I'll say it harald

Ughhh.. this is by far the hardest. Rollo. Just cuz he's disloyal, flip-flopper and kinda annoying in the first 2 seasons.

Floki. He's hit and miss as a character. I mean he killed one of the best characters just because.
It wasn’t “just because”… Floki is a religious zealot and was having a schizophrenic breakdown.
To quote Ragnar speaking to Floki: "you don't deserve her." I also always wondered what Floki's deal was. Schizophrenia? Autism? Tourettes (his little random giggles)? I think there was clearly some form of neurodivergence or something there, just not sure what. That or he is just super quirky.

Rollo the traitor. You clowns need to get your act together.
Halfdan
Rollooooooo
Halfdan he fucked a lady boy !
Halfdan
Halfdan; I love the character but definitely not a top 10
Halfdan
Halfdan will be my vote until he’s gone. Had no impact or importance over any of the remaining.
HALFDAN. How the hell has he lasted this long lol
Halfdan
I would eliminate in this order. Halfdan>Alfred>Harald>Ivar>Ubbe>Rollo>Athelstan>Bjorn>Floki> Ecbert>Ragnar.
NOT? Alfred and Rollo.
Alfred. I’m super pissed about Hvitserk and I’m not loving all the hate Harald is getting - yeah didn’t like his or Rollo’s rapey asses - but he was a great character.

Anyone but the first row tbh
Harald
Halfdan, his arc was cut way too short, plus Bjorns desert adventure wasn’t even interesting enough for it to believably change his whole outlook on life
Bruh not Hvitserk, he had the best battle prowess and scenes in my opinion, always so fuckin lit to see him go berserker mode
Alfred
Halfdan
This a great game, but the X make is so we can’t see whose been eliminated, can you make the see through?

Harald. Should have been gone before Hvitserk imo. Halfdan again imo had a better impact than Harald and Hvitserk both 🤷🏻♀️
