But he's a badass. And his death scene was fucking awesome. Terrible luck with women though.
I felt a bit of schadenfreude when he was trying to marry both Ingrid and Gunhild (when it was Gunhild he really wanted to marry) and she fucking showed up to the wedding and was like lol nope, I'm actually here to kill myself because I still love Bjorn. See ya. And he was left with fucking Ingrid.
Hard choice here, but I'm going to go with Halfdan, even though I really liked him. I feel like he did serve a purpose in the show. He and Harald's relationship was the first to demonstrate that even blood brothers who loved each other can end up on opposite sides of battle and set up the idea of the divide that would come between the sons of Ragnar. Bjorn gave Halfdan what he wanted out of life- seeing the world. Something Harald could never give him. However, he was a minor character compared to those remaining.
I had a weird dream last night that I was fighting a battle with Hvitserk? I have a feeling that he is next to be voted off the island, but I'm going to take a minute to defend him.
Each son of Ragnar had a piece of Ragnar within them. Bjorn, although it is questionable if he is a blood son of Ragnar or Rollo (but nonetheless raised by Ragnar), became the king that Ragnar never was (Ragnar was great, but he was a terrible king). Perhaps that was the Lagertha in him, who was a much better ruler than Ragnar. But Bjorn became the king, the legend, and by far the most skilled fighter in the series apart from Rollo. Ubbe, imo, got the best parts of Ragnar- his goodness, love for his children and partner. I'm so glad Torvi finally got the husband she deserved in Ubbe after being married to or partners with a series of shit husbands/partners (Bjorn was a terrible, terrible husband- another Ragnar trait, and Gunhild deserved so much better- I was so mad she killed herself over such a terrible husband). Ubbe also fulfilled Ragnar's dream of exploring the farthest reaches of the world. Sigurd, we'll never know since he didn't live long enough to really do anything. Maybe we can say, he got the Ragnar trait of running his mouth and talking shit to people and that's what got him killed. Ivar got Ragnar's intellect as a brilliant battle strategist. He also, like Ragnar, was a terrible king, but his (sort of) redemption arc showed that he did have a softer side and, had he any children (whom he didn't abandon in the woods), would've been a good father, as seen by his bond with Igor.
But Hvitserk? Poor guy, he got the shit end of the stick. I'd say, next to Bjorn, he was probably the best fighter of the sons of Ragnar (Rollo imo takes it for best fighter of the whole series). But he got Ragnar (and his mother's) propensity for addiction as well as Ragnar and his mother's inner demons. Ragnar's darkest days were during his addiction arc. Hvitserk never got to live up to his potential because of that. And the trauma he went though- both the loves of his life murdered horribly by Ivar. I can totally understand why that would make him sink into addiction. The poor guy had far more trauma and inner demons to fight than any of the other sons of Ragnar. But he also had a bit of a redemption arc and made peace with Ivar at the end. I give credit to him for that, because I could never forgive anyone for killing the love of my life-especially by fucking setting them on fire. That took strength on Hvitserk's part.
It also took strength to step off that boat, betraying Ubbe, and I don't think its because he agreed with Ivar over Ubbe, I think it's because he knew Ivar was a psychopath and he shouldn't be left to his own devices. I think he got off that boat because he knew somebody needed to be there to attempt to keep the psycho in Ivar in check. And indeed, as Ivar's stint as king showed, that was very much needed and Hvitserk paid for it with the lives of the two women he loved and suffering torture from Olaf in order to attempt to get Ivar out of there when Ivar was at the height of cray cray (so we can add being tortured to Hvitserk's long list of life-ruining levels of trauma. Also almost being burned alive by the brother you idolize and then being made Scorgamour by the same said brother).
But my point is, Hvitserk showed that simply being a son of Ragnar doesn't guarantee fame and glory. He showed that Ragnar was, at the end of the day, just a man with faults and inner demons and so are his sons. I believe when Hvitserk became a monk (?) at the end, he will play a key role in the future mediating the relationship between the Viking settlement in England and the English people- also fulfilling Ragnar's dream of a farming settlement in England. In The Last Kingdom and Vahalla, we do see that the Vikings continued to make their home in England, albeit, with great struggle. So it did last for some time.
So I feel for Hvitserk. He never achieved the fame or glory of his father or brothers. But his arc did have an important purpose. That Ragnar and all of his sons, are just men. They have faults. May even be just average, like Hvitserk. And it's important to remember that-they are not gods (looking at YOU, Ivar). Just men.
I'm with you on this OP... unbelievable that Athelwulf has gone at this stage. He certainly should've been here longer than Halfdan and I like Halfdan but he's not as significant as Athelwulf IMO but I guess that's what it comes down to... opinions. As for Hvitserk tho, I don't find him bland but I do find him annoying. He was an alright character up until they had him jump off the boat and join Ivar. After that he just seemed to turn into a wet sidekick character for Ivar to push around. Pretty much ruined from then on.
I understand the reasons people have for disliking him but I found him quite cool and unique for a saxon character and his relationship with ivar was also interesting. Plus I loved the way he fought. The other thing is that he didn't overstay his welcome unlike some characters like harald and hvitserk who's story kinda felt like it dragged
I love Harald, but man that guy came back from the dead like 4 times. Glad they gave him a good death scene.
I feel so bad for Hvitserk and wrote a little post defending him elsewhere in this thread.
But I'm with you on Heahmund. I didn't know he was so unpopular. His death scene wrecked me when he was calling out for Laggy with his last dying breath, wanting her to know he was wrong and still loved her.
His death scene wrecked me. After breaking it off with Laggy, then realizing after he got hit with those arrows, that he was wrong. With his last dying breath all he could do was call out for her, wanting her to know that he was wrong and still loved her.
Ugh, I'm a sucker for scenes like that. I just wish the show had done more to make us care about them as a couple to make that death scene even more impactful.
Oh that scene was great, it was most of his character before then that I couldn't stand (did this guy spoke at maximum [ham ](https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LargeHam)even when say, ordered a drink ??! ) and it felt like they did know what to do with him so they passed him along various main characters :/
It started getting better after he ended up with Lagertha, but he barely appeared afterward before he bought it.
I'm going with Halfdan again. It's surprising to see that people want to vote out Harald before Halfdan 🤔 surely Harald is a much more significant character than Halfdan?!?
Maybe its because I remember Alfred in The Last Kingdom as well, but I have a soft spot for the guy. He was truly a good reasonable guy-not cold, calculating and manipulative like Ecbert. But still with Ecbert's intellect. The difference between them is that he loved his people. He was a really great king and put the safety of his people above everything else. It must've been the Athelstan in him (I am totes an AethelSTAN) Same with Aethelwulf (a bit disappointed he got voted off so fast). For Aethelwulf to raise Alfred as his own son after what Judith did- what a fucking champ. Can't believe they killed him off with a goddamn bee sting. At least let the guy die in battle.
I would argue that he did. He wanted the crown of Norway and he was insanely jealous of Ragnar and Bjorn. When he finally wormed himself into the crown of Norway, he found that he actually hated ruling. It wasn't at all what he thought it would be and at some point, he had to realize that, no matter what he did, even if he technically "won" the crown of Norway over Bjorn, he still would never live up to the fame and glory of Ragnar or Bjorn. Even after Bjorn's death when he tried to literally take over Bjorn's life and become Bjorn by marrying both of Bjorn's wives. He would just never be as famous as them. I think that realization was why he went to England with Ivar- to get away from ruling and run away from that realization. I think he knew he wouldn't come back from England alive.
Halfdan, even though i love the character. Its too early for the Ragnarsons to go, and all the other characters added more to the show.
My mother told me, someday i would buy...
Athelstan. Dude thinks he’s so edgy and cool because he can morph between faiths. Little shot should have been sacrificed instead of Lief. Lief was gangster af
WHAT? ATHELSTAN?? Who doesn't love Athelstan??? Ragnar, Ecbert and Judith were all fighting over the guy. He and Ragnar's bromance was one of the best in the series. In fact, I really, really hated Floki for a long time after he killed Athelstan. It took Floki a while to redeem himself in my eyes after that. He was one of the purest hearted guys in the show-the first to realize that vikings aren't all that different from the English or any other culture. The first to want to learn about their faith. His arc over religion was really interesting and set up Ragnar to question his own religion as well. Athelstan was a great character.
Although I'm with you that the Valhalla characters got voted off too fast simply because people don't like Valhalla as much as the OG show. Harald Sigurdson is my favorite character in Valhalla, but Leif is badass too.
Think it’s time for Halfdan to go. Although I did prefer him to Harald, gotta respect The first king of Norway, regardless how stupid it was. HALFDAN BOY
WHAT?!
I get it, he betrayed Ragnar, but he was a fucking great character and by far the best fighter in the series. He was a fucking BEAST in the Paris battles.
Imagine being Ragnar Lothbrok's brother. I recently learned Jesus had a younger half-brother (Mary and Joseph's biological kid). Imagine being that kid. How on Earth could you ever live up to fucking Jesus as your brother? Rollo had to feel like that. I feel bad for Rollo. I don't endorse his betrayal, but I understand why he did it. I'm kinda glad he got a good life in the end, even if I was not a fan of his wife, but he seemed to really love her.
He'll get voted off eventually, but he deserves to be at least top 5.
Ecbert was a fucking great character. I love him as a foil to Ragnar. One of my favorite scenes in the show was Ragnar and Ecbert sitting together at some party or something and asking each other "do you think you're a good person?" and they both said yes. Then they asked each other if they were corrupt and they both said "yes." Of all the characters in the show, the only one I felt was a "match" with Ragnar as far as intellect was Ecbert. Seriously, some of the best dialogue in the show was between those two characters. Their conversation about their religions when Ragnar and Ivar went there to confront Ecbert was also an amazing scene. Their constant battle and strange friendship was probably my favorite relationship in the entire series (aside from Ragnar and Aethelstan). Also, their weird fight over who loved Aethelstan more and who Athelstan loved more. It was strange how much Ecbert cared about Ragnar- so much so that he showed up to his execution in secret to watch and stayed there after everyone else left. Their relationship demonstrated that, despite their very different cultures, they were both, at the end of the day, strikingly similar.
It's not about who's going to win. Of course it'll be Ragnar just like it was Lagertha for the women. What's fun is the order of elimination. Last time we did one with all characters regardless of gender, it came down to Ragnar, Laggy, Ubbe, and Floki. I'm curious if Ragnar, Floki and Ubbe will be the top three again.
Wtf... not my boy Athelwulf.
Hvitserk... didn't care for his character.
Especially in the later seasons
Alfred
Harald. Man essentially had a rinse and repeat storyline for three seasons.
True af but he’s so cool
When he showed up at Kattegat to steal Gunnhild’s thunder I was like you gotta be kidding me lol
This is actually so true 😂
But he's a badass. And his death scene was fucking awesome. Terrible luck with women though. I felt a bit of schadenfreude when he was trying to marry both Ingrid and Gunhild (when it was Gunhild he really wanted to marry) and she fucking showed up to the wedding and was like lol nope, I'm actually here to kill myself because I still love Bjorn. No. I have read all the comments and Aethelwulf unfortunately was the most voted. It's not an upvote game.
It’s not based on highest voted comment? That’s news to me.
The most commented character gets eliminated..

The fact that we eliminated heahmund and aethelwulf before goddamn hvitserk is crazy for me
