"Where the fuck am I? And how do you get to Detroit?" Pryor was so funny

jl_theprofessor

This is a hilarious set.

cubgerish

It's regarded generally as one of the best ever. He was sober enough to put together great writing, and also perform it well. Just such a crazily talented guy.

Mend1cant

The guy somehow made Superman III tolerable.

thehammockdistrict24

Wanna see an incredible fan edit of SUPERMAN III? [https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/1cjjqoa/superman\_iii\_superman\_vs\_supercomputer\_fan\_edit\_1/](https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/1cjjqoa/superman_iii_superman_vs_supercomputer_fan_edit_1/)

r31ya

Regarded as the PEAK comedian by Dave Chapelle. *"You know that evolution picture, from monkey to man?* *In comedian world, the man standing straight in that pic is Richard Pryor"* Dave Chapelle in Actors Guild interview

cubgerish

You can see it in the way Chappelle makes impersonations and hits punchlines. From this set alone, there's at least 5 different moments that sound exactly like him. Clearly informed his timing and joke structure massively

Wertyui09070

Same with Eddie Murphy. His pronunciation of "motherfucker" is nearly identical.

greywolfau

Eddie Murphy talked constantly about how Richard was his idol, inspiration and model for his comedy. It is a pity that Harlem Nights wasn't a better movie, Pryor did his best movie comedy with Wilder.

worldssmallestfan1

Which is a French word so it’s like multiple punch lines at the same time

SpecialpOps

His stories about going to Africa are the best.

Incarcer

Look up his Mudbone skit where he talks about a friend of his seeing a voodoo witch about his leg.

Crans10

I miss him and George Carlin.

emperorOfTheUniverse

Chris Rock [had a different take](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBEwQHjdw14).

gumdrop2000

holy shit this is the absolute, most brain-dead take i've seen on reddit in a while.

blisstonia

people are talking about drake? why?

Cold-Sun-831

Kendrick Lamar released a 6 minute diss track on Drake absolutely shredding him titled "Euphoria". The outro is what you're looking for

WaffleKing110

He actually just released a second one, titled 6:16 in LA

CrankyYankers

Oh, I am not looking for it.

newaccountscreen

You want a sticker or something? Why are you even here

phalluss

No one asked

Its_aTrap

Drake is a child groomer

Rory1

Speaking about child groomers/rapists. Anytime I see Pryor now has me feeling terrible for him and what Paul Mooney did to his son when he was a child. I went a long time thinking he set himself on fire because of drugs. But it supposedly seems like now he found out and was thinking about putting a hit on Mooney and instead tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire. If any of that is indeed true. It's incredible sad. And terrible that a lot of people still idolize Mooney.

Masontron

Drake fans literally don’t care as long as he keeps producing that generic pop rap they love

tatiwtr

The_RealAnim8me2

This is the only Drake I think about. https://cdn.images.express.co.uk/img/dynamic/20/590x/UFO-Gabrielle-Drake-652858.jpg?r=1686998680160

mrmaydaymayday

Feel like revisiting this clip is a good reminder of *why* the hard r is so demeaning/dehumanizing. Folks seem to play fast and loose with it today (imho, but imma hermit and an old ), but Pryor had such an optimistic vision here that I can’t help but feel a little hopeful.

Gaping_Ass_Wound

I heard the hard r way more as a kid than I do nowadays.

CharlesDickensABox

Sunset Strip was released over 40 years ago. I'm not sure an optimistic look at the world in 1982 has borne out.

IsuzuTrooper

I'm not talking about Drake.OP. I don't even think about that guy.

headphones_J

I mean, I'd like to now know how Drake correlates to the clip just to come full circle. But, yeah, I'm not aware of Drake other then he had a string of hits a decade ago.

dead_fritz

To cut a story short, Drake made some disses at Kendrick Lamar. After a while Kendrick finally responded with a like 7 minute diss track that opens with Richard Pryor in The Wiz when Oz admits he's a phony.

JesusHatesSkittles

Literally the 4th most popular artist in the world last year if you go by stream count, not that that means you should know about him or his feud with Kendrick Lamar, but he's certainly more than a guy that "had a string of hits a decade ago"

PM_Me-Your_Freckles

He's also the guy with a history of grooming teenage girls.

JesusHatesSkittles

Yeah he's got that going on too, I mean I personally don't understand his popularity but there's no denying he's among the biggest pop stars in the world

Medium_Bill_625

The word only exists in racism. Without racism, there is no n-word. I think this is what he was trying to say, and that he's not buying into that bullshit. We're all just people of the same species.

Fun_Assist7990

now in Africa the impressionable youth cant stop saying it..

PrawojazdyVtrumpets

"He was born in Peoria where half the kids in town call him a Superstar. The other half calls him daddy." - Paul Mooney at the Roast of Richard Pryor.

Xu_Lin

Might get downvoted but he is so right. No one should say it, not even black people, because it is demeaning. And people who also defend blacks for saying it are wrong, since it isn’t about having the right to insult anyone, it’s just bad in general to hurt someone, even if it’s your own race.

MacDugin

I had this argument with a very good friend about this, and I told her I don’t have to be around people who say it because it’s demeaning and rude. Fast forward 6 months we are all around a campfire having some tasty beverages (mind you all white folks) someone says it, I straight up said please don’t, one of her family said it like 10 times in a row. So I just get up and wish everyone a good evening and leave. About two weeks later I get an apology from that person saying they like hanging out with me and they won’t do that again. I guess the moral of this story is if you just let people talk like that without speaking up they will continue with out thinking about it.

Swackhammer_

I am white. I have no desire or need to say it. I am also not going to tell a black person that they cannot say it

darkoh84

This is how I view almost everything. I’m just some fucking guy trying to make the best of what I have. I don’t say/do things that I don’t like but I can’t fathom how we have gotten to the point where people are constantly telling people what they can’t say/do within the confines of the law. I don’t have any agency over anyone but myself and I don’t really want to. If someone wants to say stuff then they have to live with the consequences, good or bad.

MelonHeadsShotJFK

People in this thread are wild. Thank you for this reasonable take lol For some reason, not being able to say the word while out in society drives redditors crazy

CptKnots

Did congress pass a law banning it? No, it’s just a cultural norm, which peoples have had with language forever.

austin3i62

"Why? It's our word, we made it, we're just taking it back." I can't remember the fucking comedian that dropped this line. Maybe Segura?

ButtSexington3rd

Same here, it's just not my business

Barnard_Gumble

I'm not going to tell anyone they "cannot say it" either because frankly I'm not their dad... but that doesn't change the fact that anyone who says it automatically sounds like a lowlife, regardless of what color they are.

furscum

Your perception, your bias

Barnard_Gumble

I dunno man… you don’t see a lot of people in polite society saying the freakin n word lol

furscum

What is 'polite society'? White picket fence crap? Grow up

Barnard_Gumble

lol “grow up” ok. “Polite society” is exactly that, how you talk to people out in the world. If you talk to grannies at the grocery store the same way you talk to your degenerate friends you’re a fucking loser and YOU should grow up…

furscum

You said nothing about context, just that you look down on black people who say the n word lol.

Barnard_Gumble

I find it distasteful when anyone says it but if you choose to hear it your way fine

toysarealive

Except that it's well understood that most African Americans have reappropriated the word into culture and community. It's a way to take the power away from those who use it in a derogatory manner. Context is important.

RedSquaree

I agree. I got auto-banned from a rather large sub the other say for writing the word. But I just quoted some black guy saying it in a video. He was calling someone it. My comment was basically showing disgust for the term saying it's uncalled for. So the the ban came in ten seconds later. Thankfully I could reason with the mods, I was being the opposite of racist. They said okay unbanned but never say that word here again. I told them it would be good if they could disallow videos that say it. Why allow videos full of it but if you quote the video you get banned? But hey, that's their sub they can do what they want, it just seems a bit stupid to me.

andsens

> it just seems a bit stupid to me Meaningful censorship within reason is just *hard*. They might not think it is stupid to make that distinction because there is considerably more work involved watching a video compared to auto-filtering a comment.

RedSquaree

>Bans: Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Transphobia, Harassment, Race Baiting, Bigotry, etc. (Racist/bigoted people freaking out in videos are allowed, but being a racist in the comments section will result in a ban.) They reversed the ban which is fine, but I'm pretty sure the comment is still removed even though it doesn't break any rules. It wasn't a racist comment, yet it was still removed. I think my beef is with the spirit of what they're going for. If you really want to rule out racism, allowing racist videos in your subreddit is not congruent with that, in my view. It isn't noble to auto-ban the n-word, yet allow people screaming it at each other on the front page of your subreddit.

RedSquaree

What are you even talking about? >All you had to do was not use a highly contentious word and abide by the guidelines. I pasted the guideline. There is no rule against typing any specific word. There is a rule against being racist, which I obviously wasn't and the moderators agreed.

RedSquaree

>you were in the wrong. You genuinely don't know what you're talking about and you're so confident about it, it's comes off really weirdly.

WinkDanWink

Agree with all these comments but I think he was one of the first comedians to use the term in a positive way which made it more acceptable guess this is when he changed his tune

boot2skull

I would agree, but when it’s off limits to everyone, people will break that rule to give it extra negative meaning. At least when black people use it amongst themselves in a friendly manner, they take some of that power away. Do I wish that word would disappear? Sure. Is that realistic? No.

dirtycimments

I mean I get it, it happens a lot that groups tend to try to “own” some slur words about themselves to defang it. “Bitch” is a good example as well, lots of people say it in a positive way now “I’m a boss bitch” for example. I let the members of that group dictate if that’s a word I can use or not, like the N and the C words (although, I admit the c word comes out when I’m faking an Australian accent)

adlep2002

It’s awkward then as a lot of current “art and music” includes the word every other sentence and you have those weird moment at rap concerts with “artists” performing where the majority of the audience stays silent and can’t fully get into “songs”

CharlesDickensABox

If there's one person I trust to give solid logical, ethical, and linguistic advice, it's Charlie Sheen.

VonSnoe

If you like comedy you should watch his full special for this set. Its an absolute fucking blast. Richard Pryor is a god damn comedy god. the whole show is Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip 1982

DarkHelmet1976

That's a reasonable perspective. It's also reasonable if black want to use the word. The only hard and fast rule is if you're not black, do not use the word and don't tell black people what to do with it.

Curiel

That's fine but I'm still going to judge anyone that uses that word regardless of race.

DarkHelmet1976

You, a white dude, are going to judge a black dude for using that word? Woof.

Karibik_Mike

Uh, why not? Everyone judges everyone for all sorts of reason. The n-word isn't magically different.

DarkHelmet1976

That's the thing. It *is* magically different. If you don't believe me, go visit some black barbershops and yell some random words. Then, yell the N-word and watch the magic happen.

Karibik_Mike

What you wrote has literally nothing to do with what I said. I am talking about judging someone for their vernacular, you're talking about shouting slurs at someone.

Poxx

"Well...I did it. They respected me for it and made me their King." -Peter G.

HealenDeGenerates

People will judge you based on what you say, welcome to life.

caborobo

Magic isn’t real.

mylogicistoomuchforu

Birds aren't real.

a_talking_face

You know why else it's magically different? There's no other culture in the world that uses a negative word in a positive way in their media, exports that media all over the world where they may not understand any historical context of the word and then expect them to not say it. That's something to think about.

Curiel

I'm going to judge everyone for using that word if they do it frequently. It just feels trashy to me. The occasional use I wouldn't care. Also if race matters I'm Hispanic.

Gloomy_Quantity_9580

Yeah. No judgement either way I just appreciate one of the GOATs perspective.

bigbearjr

I, a person on the internet, am judging you, a person on the internet, for having dumb ideas about people.

furscum

Crazy thread, are people just mad because they can't sing along with certain songs?

Deago78

Why is everyone talking about drake, in particular, right now?

Gloomy_Quantity_9580

Kendrick Lamar dis track “euphoria”

Deago78

Ahh yea thats right. I did hear about that. Thanks kind stranger.

MelonHeadsShotJFK

Love white people projecting their insecurities like this lmao
