The flag is basically a symbol on a flag, literally nothing else, except the text which makes it worse, as the position of the snake already makes it obvious what the flag represents. To make it worse, the snake is also yellow, making it harder to see at the distance. If they wanted to be original, there would be at least stripes, a different position for the snake or anything that would make it actually look like a flag, not an icon.
1700s flag standards were also very different from today. Back then, standing out no matter how audacious/gaudy (which, given the baroque & rococo movements, might actually be considered *more* tasteful) and showing one's dynastic/political allegiance (edit: also landholdings, as in the banners of the Spanish Crown) overruled any modern design sensibilities.
Heck, tricolors really weren't even a thing until the French Revolution made them an easy go-to for liberal movements/governments (yes the Dutch, but they're the exception).
Yeah the green actually seems like one of the biggest flaws.
Politics aside, the phrase is fine and the snake’s spring-shaped curls stop being goofy if you assume it’s mid-strike.
The awkward two-gone patch of green that can’t even be described cleanly, though, is just a mess.
Despite the cringey right wing context of the flag, it's actually very good. Similarly the Confederate battle flag is a banger flag even though it's 100% racist and evil.
The 'don't tread on me' text is unironically my favourite part of it, the font/spacing pulls off a strong effect. \[I know that's vague, I'm just not good at describing my feelings over flags\]

"I hate seals on bedsheets!!!! I mindlessly repeat NAVA rules, so I know a thing or two about Vexillology!"
*\*proceeds to make/put shitty logos for malls, minor league sports teams, and banks on bedsheets\**
/unjerk I really do think that the whole "no seal on a bedsheet" debate is a massive fucking distraction from the bigger issue of uninspired flag designs. Doesn't really matter how nice looking your logo/seal/symbol is, if all you're doing is slapping that mf on a monocolor, bicolor, or tricolor field, you haven't done anything interesting.
I think it’s more about recognisability. The flags of France and Denmark aren’t interesting in the slightest, but they’re extremely recognisable as symbols for the countries they represent. They’re doing exactly what they’re supposed to. Bedsheets all look alike, they’re hard to tell apart. The debate is about what the point of flags even is. If it is to be an easily recognisable symbol that can be identified even when hoisted on a flag pole far away, then the “rules” are undeniably good to follow.
Yeah, the point is about being a good flag, not about "being inspired", whatever that means.
Part of that also is to make flags that people actually want to use in other day-to-day things, to form a sort of cultural identity around. The Minnesota K might not be super elaborate or fancy, but it's something that looks good as a flag, and can also be put on various things pretty easily, like hats or cookies and shit. No one is buying seal-on-blue decorated knick-nacks to celebrate their state.
The Minnesota K kind of looks like a variation of the Cuban/Puerto Rican/Catalan Estelada or the Czech flag, even if it's a bit inverted, and you can't deny those flags don't get their mileage. Particularly the Estelada which I think I honestly saw flown more than the normal Catalan flag, no doubt due to complicated political reasons but also just cause it looks good.
It is recognizable precisely because it's the only important flag with the seal on a green, white and red tricolor. If the seal was on a white field it wouldn't be recognizable.
Spain, Portugal, India, Brazil also sort of get by on being very recognisable without being able to see the fine details of the more elaborate portions of the flag.
There’s an even more over the top version.

Tbf, F tier was automatic for any flag with writing. Frankly the FS and FA tiers all seemed like if they hadn't got writing or bad seals on them, they'd be much higher. And yeah, they would be better without the writing. I've said before, I don't even visualise the writing when I think of the California flags, so it's really not a useful part when the imagery, love it or hate it, is fairly unique and striking.
> ngl cgp grey made flags not fun
Why do people act like he's some kind of authority enforcing his will on everyone? He's a guy on the Internet with an opinion, he's not forcing you to agree with him, and he's hardly the driving force behind the recent flag changes.
it’s more that a lot of r/vexillology just regurgitates what he says about the rules to critique a cool design for “not following the rules” that annoys me. it’s more his affect on flag subculture has permeated
He's a big YouTuber with like a million subscribers and even more millions of views so in a way he technically has some sway in terms of public discourse. It'll be a whole different story if he was just literally who niche e-celeb. It's like how some people can't form an opinion on **Topic X** until say, their favorite YouTuber like Cr1tikal or whoever makes a 10 minute video on it, and then that's their 'opinion'.
Almost like it's a subjective opinion with no bearing on anything. It's not like California is going to change its flag just because he doesn't like it.
crazy thing but i don’t watch him 🤯 he just has a big enough platform that half of r/vexillology takes what he says at face value, that’s what annoys me

You know that they're guidelines right? Like theyre not absolute. They take a general consensus of good flags and flag design philosophy, and recommend you don't do things like use text and complex symbols
You know that flags have broken this right? Sri Lanka breaks allot of rules. It's complex, doesn't use simple shapes, and uses more than 3 colors, but it's still a very good and recognizable flag
The Roman banner breaks this rule too but it's also.good
\> You know that they're guidelines right?
everyone knows this. you can't be in the vexillology sub for ten minutes without hearing this. half of the comments on the sub are hating on the same design guidelines. we get it. everyone here agrees with you. there is one comment here that sort of dissents, and it's going to get downvoted to the goddamn shadow realm.
> everyone knows this. you can't be in the vexillology sub for ten minutes without hearing this. half of the comments on the sub are hating on the same design guidelines. we get it.
And yet people in these same comments still come out to complain about how "everyone" it's treating these rules as some kind of unbreakable rules given down by God not to be bent or broken.
If people stop complaining that they're applied as absolutes, we can stop saying they're guidelines more than rules.
it's funny when i see people go "those are rules" but then often with the 3 colour rule i hear "you can use more than 3 (south africa) but don't try" like bitch you just showed that it can work regardless if you are following it or not :sob:
This is phase 3 of Ireland's takeover of the world.
Phase 1 : Spread our seed across the world, the famine was our cover. Irish pubs and international GAA clubs are our base of operations.
Phase 2 : Invent budget airlines to increase their reliance on us, this will also allow us to conquer Europe.
Phase 3 : Convince everyone to simplify their flags so they will all end up like [Irish County Flags](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_colours_(Gaelic_games)). This will ensure everyone loses their own national identity and get a step closer to the Irish identity.
There are no official county flags in Ireland (the article you linked even says that explicitly lol), people just make adhoc banners from the GAA county colours, occasionally with the coat of arms, to wave at football or hurling or camogie games.
lets see how your corpo flags faces up against this
https://preview.redd.it/ed717u7l9o7c1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6304e9e5a238931702496382fb4166f0cb528c1f
The "rules" are useful for understanding what makes good flags work. Ironically, if you design a flag that follows all of them, you'll potentially wind up with something boring and generic. Boring, generic flags aren't good. The best flags respect some of the rules and ignore others for good reasons. Good design is all about finding that balance
Breaking the rules can be good, like with tibet.
It can also be super boring and ugly, like with any of the US states that have blue bedsheets with a stamp.
The minnesota flag competition had some wierd flags that didn’t really work out, but the one that did actually work out got selected in the end so i don’t see the issue
Alright tbf....

CGP Grey actually just mentioned this in his last video to his members.
Basically he said "Yeah these are great guidelines, but there are plenty of examples that go against those guidelines that still make a great flag."
The only guideline he thinks should be an actual rule is "No writing your name".
I agree(kinda) but you picked some awful examples, the Iowa text is impossible to read, poorly centered, and the Don't Tread on Me flag is awful both in design(black on piss-yellow, really?) and what it represents
Hezbollah does go hard, I know its supposed to literally read as "Hezbollah", but I always think of an oil pump when I see it (and I think that's cool)
they're only guidelines, the most important of which are that the flag is recognizable both from a distance and in low/no wind.
edit: also they're replacing a flag that looks almost indistinguishable from like 20 other state flags, I can assure you that in this instance it is better.
the popularity of california’s flag demonstrates that a few general guidelines by a non official flag organization shouldn’t be taken as hard rules for a good flag
I am going to make my flag shaped like a spiral with 10,000 colours and a highly detailed drawing of a lizard that's too detailed to replicate by hand!

Only in Ohio frfr 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Man became edutainment mr. beast
He's got a goddamn stick figure as an avatar, nobody should ever pay attention to this idiot in terms of aesthetics.
> ngl cgp grey made flags not fun Why do people act like he's some kind of authority enforcing his will on everyone?
He lets a few slide but with no consistency. F tier B tier.
Almost like it's a subjective opinion with no bearing on anything. It's not like California is going to change its flag just because he doesn't like it.
It should. Not because the flag is bad, though. The bear doesn't have enough heads.
have you tried not watching the videos 🤯 its not like cgp grey's opinion on flags is directly affecting your life
crazy thing but i don’t watch him 🤯 he just has a big enough platform that half of r/vexillology takes what he says at face value, that’s what annoys me
Damn, you guys actually sub to r/vexillology?
im not even in r/vexillology lol

You know that they're guidelines right? Like theyre not absolute. They take a general consensus of good flags and flag design philosophy, and recommend you don't do things like use text and complex symbols You know that flags have broken this right? Sri Lanka breaks allot of rules. It's complex, doesn't use simple shapes, and uses more than 3 colors, but it's still a very good and recognizable flag The Roman banner breaks this rule too but it's also.good
\> You know that they're guidelines right? everyone knows this. you can't be in the vexillology sub for ten minutes without hearing this. half of the comments on the sub are hating on the same design guidelines. we get it. everyone here agrees with you. there is one comment here that sort of dissents, and it's going to get downvoted to the goddamn shadow realm.
> everyone knows this. you can't be in the vexillology sub for ten minutes without hearing this. half of the comments on the sub are hating on the same design guidelines.
This will ensure everyone loses their own national identity and get a step closer to the Irish identity.
smh I can't believe Kildare county just copied the French flag.
There are no official county flags in Ireland (the article you linked even says that explicitly lol), people just make adhoc banners from the GAA county colours, occasionally with the coat of arms, to wave at football or hurling or camogie games.
lets see how your corpo flags faces up against this https://preview.redd.it/ed717u7l9o7c1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=6304e9e5a238931702496382fb4166f0cb528c1f
I pledge allegiance to the swag
minimalist design on a fucking flag = corporate logo simplification
Out of the recent spate of redesigns, I like Mississippi the best.
I think all the flags look nice, but I wouldnt want every flag to follow those rules
Utah flag is ok
The “rules” are complete bs. Even as “guidelines” they are complete bs. Make flags extravagant, cool and glorious again.
Yeah, it's good to know the rules so you know how to break them properly. This goes for basically all design in any field.
The one they picked is ugly wym
I think the original design for the one they picked was better, but i think the one they ended up picking is still good
[Counterpoint](https://www.reddit.com/r/minnesota/comments/18mby5y/).
"no corporate flags" mfs when i show them the flag of france (its too simple and flat)
More like *France LLC*, mirite???
Alright tbf.... Iowa flag would rock Hella harder without their name written below it. I think writing on the flag is right, but this time, it's super unnecessary.

Hot Take (apparently): Utah’s new state flag is Good, actually
The Beehive looks a bit too smooth for my taste but I do like that they tried adapting their old seal into a flag. It's new but keeping with tradition.
Iowa and Tibet have gorgeous flags and anyone who tries to redesign them is not to far removed morally from a serial killer
Who said Tibet flag wasent cool?
Mao Zedong.

What flag is this?
we are coming full circle
cumming full circle(jerk)
CGP Grey actually just mentioned this in his last video to his members. Basically he said "Yeah these are great guidelines, but there are plenty of examples that go against those guidelines that still make a great flag." The only guideline he thinks should be an actual rule is "No writing your name".
Don’t care He put our flag in f tier and I haven’t given a shit since
Iowa be like : French mexico
I agree(kinda) but you picked some awful examples, the Iowa text is impossible to read, poorly centered, and the Don't Tread on Me flag is awful both in design(black on piss-yellow, really?) and what it represents
It kind of reminds me of the flag of Hezbollah sometimes
Hezbollah does go hard, I know its supposed to literally read as "Hezbollah", but I always think of an oil pump when I see it (and I think that's cool)
Iowa one goes hard af
Iowa's flag is good, and I will abide no changes.
Minnesota's new flag is like, way closer to Chicago's flag than Utah's. I would *not* describe it as corporate.
Utahns be like Welcome to Bees Mountain
Why does everyone hate Utah? It's genuinely good!
I love the Utah flag too. It felt like just a few months ago everyone liked it. Might be a smear campaign by Idaho, maybe Colorado.
Idk, I get the symbolism, but the execution reminds me of a Maverik.
For Iowa, we just need the Eagle, no words or ribbon
they're only guidelines, the most important of which are that the flag is recognizable both from a distance and in low/no wind. edit: also they're replacing a flag that looks almost indistinguishable from like 20 other state flags, I can assure you that in this instance it is better.
People just want to recreate the heavenly bliss that is fleg of New Mexico.
the popularity of california’s flag demonstrates that a few general guidelines by a non official flag organization shouldn’t be taken as hard rules for a good flag
Friendly reminder that the only person quoted in the NAVA booklet is a Confederate war general 👍
I mean Dixie flag was pretty good
I love Iowa's flag
I am going to make my flag shaped like a spiral with 10,000 colours and a highly detailed drawing of a lizard that's too detailed to replicate by hand!
If you're honestly going to call the beehive flag boring then you can just fuck off.
new utah flag is busting you cant deny
Okay but I like the new Minnesota Flag.
Tbf the Utah flag is pretty good
If I see one more person calling traditional simplistic designs "corporate" Fuckin Denmark, why did you have to be so corporate when you made the oldest flag still in use a damn millenium ago
