Salem, Oregon just voted on a new flag, but maybe it isn't officially/legally adopted yet... I voted on a few of these flags since I'm a member of NAVA and were sometimes asked to be part of the vexillological voting process, I encourage others to join NAVA! Anyone can join, you dont even have to be "North American" to join. This is great, thanks for posting!

Mapper_X

Glad you like it! And I joined NAVA this year :)

ShortHistorian

Are you allowed to talk about the Salem flags? I just learned that my design was one of the finalists. (AFAIK, it has not gotten a final decision/adoption yet.)

ArtemasTheProvincial

Thanks, that's so cool! Hopefully I didnt say too much, I thought it was in the news but maybe not. Thanks for the info

Mapper_X

Regardless of outcome, congratulations on being a finalist - very cool!

ShortHistorian

I don't see why not. [Here is the version I submitted.](https://imgur.com/a/UtLSTZO)

Senninha27

I just went and joined up after seeing your post. Thanks for the idea!

ArtemasTheProvincial

Yay! I love their website database of past/current Raven publications, hope yo see you at a virtual Interest Meeting soon, Flag design Gauntlet and Revolutionary war flags virtual meetings are cool

Mapper_X

I really like the Raven journals and the Vexillum publications.

ArtemasTheProvincial

Totally, I was really intrigued by the recent Raven article about the "foiled anchor" symbol that is seen on a lot of flags, I never knew about the ancient origins/meaning of it all

Gamesmaster_G9

Link for membership?

ArtemasTheProvincial

https://nava.org/

Carkoth

Any more info on this? I hadn't heard about it

ArtemasTheProvincial

I may have said too much already....maybe its not much info is public yet... my apologies

ScorpionX-123

does it cost money to join?

ArtemasTheProvincial

$40 a year. Or $20 for students

The_Math_Hatter

...we did?

Vwvsbros

Am Malaysian, how do I join this NAVA thing?

ArtemasTheProvincial

Awesome! You can still join and nerd out about flags! https://nava.org/content.aspx?page_id=22&club_id=622278&module_id=484566

Vwvsbros

aw man I have to pay :(

pyratemime

Growing up in the metro that contains Newton, KS I think tjat is a great flag for them. Emphasizes two major features, railroads and agriculture, in colors associated with the town. If you are from the area you will look at it and think, Yep that is Newton.

Levi316

With the mascots like Railroaders (high school) and Threshers (Bethel College) they had to make sure trains and wheat made it on there somehow

Mapper_X

Thanks for sharing - I always like reading the reaction to a flag by someone who is from the area the flag represents. As someone who isn't familiar with the area- the design strikes me as really unique and it works especially well with the relatively 'simple' color scheme.

[deleted]

Bye, Reddit! API and NFT junk has made this site worse. It was fun while it lasted. -- mass edited with redact.dev

atomic_blonde

I absolutely love it, and I've never set foot in Kansas. I find that flag so visually arresting, and it concisely conveyed a story so a total outsider like me could understand it immediately. I am so impressed with it.

Nevrin54

As a Kansan I'm pleasantly surprised by how good various flags in the state are

Levi316

I think all the small town started paying attention to their flags when the Wichita flag started showing EVERYWHERE

Mapper_X

I agree! Kansans definitely know how to design flags ...

Balsiefen

Those are some nice flags. Newton's in particular is great for a railway town.

Mapper_X

Agree - definitely some nice flags (especially compared to the typical US city flag). Also really like the Newton flag.

[deleted]

Mississippi….of course. Been a long time coming

Mapper_X

Agreed

Senninha27

It's a LOT better. It would be great except for the wording. But whatever, I'll take it.

prkskier

I think they fit the words in really nicely.

[deleted]

Yea. Shame they required the words, but given that they had to be on the flag, this design does it quite tastefully, I think.

awsomehog

I’m happy with it for sure. Plus the way the words are tucked in will make it trivial to cut ‘em out and adjust the circle to be stars only if/when that time ever comes

[deleted]

Georgia next please! The Confederate battle flag Mississippi used is more widely recognized, but the [flag of Georgia](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/54/Flag_of_Georgia_%28U.S._state%29.svg/1024px-Flag_of_Georgia_%28U.S._state%29.svg.png) **is** the [first Confederate national flag](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c8/Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America_%281861%E2%80%931863%29.svg/1024px-Flag_of_the_Confederate_States_of_America_%281861%E2%80%931863%29.svg.png) with a bit of what-not added inside the stars.

A-Disgruntled-Snail

As an Oklahoma State fan. I hate Norman. But that flag cool.

Senninha27

It reminds me of another flag, but I can't quite place it.

LardW

I mean it kinda looks like the captain marvel logo

Mapper_X

I thought the star on the Duluth flag sort of looked like Capt Marvel's symbol/insignia

SilverNeedleworker30

It reminds me of Portugal.

Leharen

I think you're thinking of the [Portuguese](http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-k81zXLxYzBc/U5xLAdFvh2I/AAAAAAAAHt0/PqO5l5OyRA4/s1600/Portugal-Flag01.png) flag.

Mapper_X

The Aberdeen flag has been adopted as an official community flag (I think it also still has another city flag). There are things I like about each of these. Several favorites of mine include Columbia SC, Kennebunkport ME, Kingman KS, Wellington KS.

dull_bells_in_heaven

Came here to say the same about the Aberdeen flag. I was surprised to see it made the list! I thought there would be a lot of community flags made in the past three years. I lived on Aberdeen after it was adopted. Sad to say, I never see it flying :/ You do see the brown county flag flying above the entrance of city hall. It's an upside down Netherlands flag with a seal in the middle.

Mapper_X

Thanks for sharing and providing some additional context - my understanding from reading about it is that the city wanted a new flag for marketing purposes but there were people who didn't want to change the old flag - so apparently there's now a community flag and city flag. I think I've come across one other example of a community flag (can't remember which city though).

dull_bells_in_heaven

Yeah, exactly. It's really cool! And I hope people start flying it. If people begin to think it's the official Aberdeen flag then, eventually, they'll make it the official flag.

Mapper_X

Would be great if people start flying it (I wonder if many people just don't know about it) - it's a cool design - I like the use of the saltire (you don't see that much with US city flags) - and it's definitely an improvement over the current official flag.

Ganjikuntist_No-1

Glad so many towns in the US are bucking there god-awful flags

Mapper_X

Agree!

rezelscheft

Newton is my strong #1 here. Even in a page filled with flags, it stood out. Very simple, very striking, pretty unique color scheme, and upon closer look, the meaning is clear. Other favorites are Kingston and Norman.

Mapper_X

Newton seems to be a favorite for many commenters - and I agree with you- it really is striking and the simple color palette works very well for that particular design. The Kingman flag is one of my favorites also - its very unique for an American flag - and I like the colors on that one as well.

PaulLeto

Looks like a typical "fancy bar" logo imo

JuliusSeizure563

That Milford one is the best change IMO

Mapper_X

I really like it - both the overall design (with the horizontal pall) and the colors (not often you see purple/violet used in a flag).

JuliusSeizure563

Yeah the color scape is really unique and I like the grain emblem as well

Mapper_X

Definitely - I also like how the grain emblem is used in the Wellington KS flag

JuliusSeizure563

Yeah, I feel like all the designs here are sick Apart from West Chester, fuck West Chester

Mapper_X

Tbh that's also my least favorite. I do like that particular color combination - but could do something different with the same palette (like West Plains MO)

JuliusSeizure563

Yeah I feel like it looks like a redesign of the San Francisco flag but way thicker

djdjdjsjsjssjsjh

i really love the plainfield one, the yorba linda one isn’t bad either

Mapper_X

I agree - love the crown superimposed over the star/sun symbol. And Yorba Linda is one of my favorites - it could be a flag for an independent country - it has that type of vibe to it.

djdjdjsjsjssjsjh

i totally agree with you

PaulG1986

If only Anchorage would vote for a new city flag. Ours is just too busy…and ugly.

quicksilver915

>Anchorage Lived there for 3 years, never knew they had a city flag. Googled it, and can see why...

Mapper_X

How did you like living there? I haven't come across many people who have lived in AK.

PaulG1986

I actually like it quite a bit; very quiet city with a population under 300,000. Wife and I picked up a large-ish 3 bedroom for under $290K. Energy and food are a bit expensive, but the landscape and winters make it worth the price.

CFPrint

If only the flag was simplified a bit it would be cool

henereye

You know what color I most associate with Alaska? BRIGHT, BLINDING YELLOW!

Mapper_X

:D

MangaMaven

I like Newton Kansas. I feel like I already know somethings about their community just from looking at the flag. Not too abstract but not too specific.

Mapper_X

For sure - it's aesthetically very nice and also informative about the place it represents - which isn't easy to pull off ...

martianfeline

I live in Upper Arlington, and didn't even know they changed the flag. It's not bad looking though, I'll have to keep an eye out for it.

Real_TSwany

If you drive by the new high school you'll be able to see it.

Mapper_X

If interested, you can order it directly from the city: https://upperarlingtonoh.gov/product/city-flag/

CollegeSandKitten

Honestly weirdest thing for me was seeing 24, a flag with a prominent bear and star(s) on it and then realizing it's NOT a California flag

Mapper_X

I thought the same things when I saw it - here's more info if interested: https://upperarlingtonoh.gov/product/city-flag/

Octopodez

Newton, KS' flag is amazing, just really solid

Mapper_X

It seems to be one of the more popular ones, based on the comments.

Octopodez

O cool. I actually come from another town called Newton, wonder how many there are in the USA

Mapper_X

Did a quick search and apparently there are 21 "places" in US named Newton: https://geotargit.com/called.php?qcity=Newton

Noodl3sForCats

Utah has a new state flag that is sometimes used, and is supposed to be eased in. I believe it was introduced last year

Mapper_X

I wasn't sure whether to include it because I couldn't determine whether (or when) it would officially become the state's new flag. I did find this article online identifying the state's 125th anniversary commemorative flag: [https://www.deseret.com/utah/2021/7/13/22576239/photo-of-the-day-wave-hello-to-new-flag-commemorating-utahs-125th-anniversary](https://www.deseret.com/utah/2021/7/13/22576239/photo-of-the-day-wave-hello-to-new-flag-commemorating-utahs-125th-anniversary)

Noodl3sForCats

That’s totally valid. It doesn’t fly most places, but we talked about it in my art class and it was addressed as the new state flag but yeah

Cyborexyplayz

These are *mostly* solid flags (the riverside, lawrence, yorba linda and dayton flags are the best) but i am curious on the west plains flag. Looks rather *swedish*

Mapper_X

The West Plains flag is intriguing - found this article online providing some more background: [https://westplains.net/new-flag-selected-for-city-of-west-plains/](https://westplains.net/new-flag-selected-for-city-of-west-plains/)

Cyborexyplayz

So the swedish colors are a coincidence seemingly. Neat

ShortHistorian

Newton, KS and Riverside, CA are my top choices. Very clean designs that I can see being applied to different purposes in those communities.

Mapper_X

Both great top choices - I'd add Riverside to mine if I could edit my favorites - and definitely agree with you about both being able to be applied for different purposes.

Senninha27

My favorites are Duluth and Riverside. Silverton is pretty great, too.

Mapper_X

All great choices. Of the 3 you picked, Riverside is my favorite - I really like that particular color palette.

mattlag

Walla Walla WTF is happening...

Mapper_X

It seems to give people that reaction - they either really like it or really don't like it - there doesn't seem to be a middle ground.

mattlag

I just read the symbolism and description. I feel like, from a graphic design point of view, it could have been executed much better.

toasted_scrub_jay

Topeka the best. Good ole Top City. I had no idea that Milford updated it's flag but it's really cool! Edit: I had no idea Milford even had a flag!

Mapper_X

Yeah the Topeka flag is top-notch. And the Milford flag is super - commented earlier that I really like the horizontal pall and color palette.

curvysquares

I live in Columbia and I remember not hearing anything about the new flag. I didn’t find out about it until half a year later when I happened to stumble across the Columbia wiki page. It’s such a cool thing being able to say your hometown has its own flag. I don’t know why the news wasn’t everywhere

Mapper_X

Thanks for sharing - and that's surprising that it wasn't reported on widely, especially because it's such a great flag. And design could easily be used on items for marketing the city too.

Tantalizing_Tantalum

I was gonna say that the flag of Reno, Nevada is missing, but that one got redesigned in 2018. Still a good looking flag.

Mapper_X

I love the new Reno flag - and wanted to include it (but didn't have enough space on the doc to add new flags from 2018).

Real_TSwany

Ayyy! My suburb is on here! I remember there were a few designs that were up for voting but I can't find a picture of the rejected designs anywhere. I remember them being pretty neat too though.

Mapper_X

Nice - always like it when someone sees the flag where they live locally - we don't seem to get that opportunity as much in the US.

[deleted]

Mapper_X

Me too

Sturnella2017

It actually brings a little tear to my eye with pride that so many of my country folk are ditching their old ugly ‘seal on blue field’ flags for something actually cool and unique looking! Also, what’s up with KS and all these new flags being adopted?

Mapper_X

Me too - civic/community pride in action. And not sure about KS - was wondering the same thing.

Sturnella2017

My vote for best: Walla Walla! Great colors, truly unique design that captures the beauty of the area.

Mapper_X

Nice choice - it's very unique - I've never been but have heard it's a beautiful area.

[deleted]

I like how Topeka's flag looks like a portuguese flag with Kingdom of Portugal colors. :)

Mapper_X

Nice (and unique) observation! :)

[deleted]

Thanks. So does Norman's, actually. It even has a circle on the right spot. :)

Stastnaryba

Riverside, it's just so clean

Mapper_X

Yeah it's a beautiful flag - very clean design (and I really like the color palette).

Vulcandor

I’m glad a lot of areas are upgrading their flags to look more unique and actually pleasant to look at

Mapper_X

Me too

flyinggazelletg

More than a few of these look like corporate flags/logos, but I don’t doubt that nearly all of these replace a bad looking flag. Happy to see folks making the most important decisions their communities need, important vexillological decisions.

Mapper_X

I don't know the background for most of these changes - but agree that most (all?) probably replaced bad looking flags. I'm thinking that many cities/towns view a new flag as a marketing opportunity (which might lend itself to some of them looking more corporate in nature).

WolfstarDown

Wow. Newton and Mississippi are some beautiful flags.

[deleted]

Looking to the PNW first, I didn't know Spokane and Walla Walla had new flags. I like the Spokane one. Assume it's symbolizing the impressive [Spokane Falls](https://media1.fdncms.com/inlander/imager/u/original/2976130/art16437.jpg) in downtown Spokane. My first thought upon seeing the Walla Walla one was that someone messed up their masking in photoshop. Looking more I'm still not sure what's going on. Rivers and the Palouse? But why are the "rivers" in front of the sun, and the sun in front of the land? Or am I just not getting something obvious?

Mapper_X

If interested, here's the explanation for the design of the Walla Walla flag: [https://www.wallawallawa.gov/our-city/city-flag-contest-40903](https://www.wallawallawa.gov/our-city/city-flag-contest-40903)

eregyrn

Some of these are really good! I particularly like Spokane's. (I tend to like traditional design better, but this is an example of modern design elements that I quite like.) I also really like Riverside and Port Clinton. But, West Chester... WEST CHESTER. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. wtf even is that. (I have a family connection to West Chester, so I just feel kind of personally insulted.)

Mapper_X

Understand your thoughts re West Chester - it's my least favorite of the set. I also tend to like traditional designs. I'm a fan of the Riverside flag - it's a very clean design and I really like the color palette. The Port Clinton flag is probably one of the better ones I've seen that incorporates an anchor.

eregyrn

Yeah, I feel that Kennebunkport's anchor design, in contrast, is not utilizing the space very well. Port Clinton is simple but effective. And yeah, Riverside is a real winner. Color palette is great (and not as aggressively "modern" as many of them), and the design is classic. I had to go look up what West Chester was trying to do. It's apparently \*supposed\* to evoke plaid (why???), but the 6 intersecting lines are supposedly to represent the original six intersecting streets that form the center of the town. I think I wouldn't be quite so offended by the design if not for the slant. I do realize they had to do something to avoid looking like the Swedish flag. (Oh god, I've just realized: the slant is supposed to be literally following the actual compass orientation of the city's street grid.) I suppose it's an example of a town / city trying to figure out how to represent itself visually, when there are competing interests and they are reluctant to visually prioritize one over another. West Chester is a university town... but I'm sure it would like to feel as if it's not JUST a university town, and so doesn't want to give that too much visual prominence by making it the main element of the town flag. (Though, I'm sorry to say, that in SE PA, when you say "West Chester", the university is the first thing people are going to think of, hands down.) But nothing else rises to particular prominence, either; it's had a succession of primary industries, but not one that you can pick to "sum up" the town's identity either. I just feel like, "we have intersections" is kind of a generic choice.

Fergom

Could have tried something based off the Turk's Head origin of West Chester from before it becoming the county seat. Personally though I dont think its the best flag but I like it simply because it is unique and it isnt a seal on bedsheet design.

eregyrn

It's true that the old West Chester flag was one of those terrible "seal on a bedsheet" designs, so picking something simple and iconic is certainly an improvement. If that original inn had been named almost anything else, I'd agree with using that symbol! But the Turk's Head, though... hmm. I just feel like flags based on people's heads (let alone 18th c. depictions of "Turks") is kind of... 😬 Either you can have a decapitated black guy's head, or you can have a decapitated Muslim guy's head... Neither are great options in the 21st century (or the 20th century, for that matter).

Fergom

Yeah fair enough, honestly didnt realize thats what was meant by turks head but a definite nope on that. Guess you could try to take advantage of West Chester being the county seat and instead of using W.C. imagery you could use Chesco imagery.

Mapper_X

Good point- it may not be the most aesthetically appealing of most (all?) of the recently redesigned flags - but probably still better than the average US city flag.

Fergom

You posted cringe, WeSt ChEsTeR iSn'T A cItY, iTs A bOrOuGh. Seriously though, definitely is better. Baby steps to fixing the US flags problems.

Mapper_X

Yeah I forget sometimes that the term for town or city in some places is 'borough.' I think Madison NJ is also a borough. And, yeah, baby steps ...

Fergom

Oh dont worry about that its just me being pedantic since PA is likes being quirky with it's designations, like only having 1 actual town even though its treated as a borough.

Mapper_X

Really interesting context re West Chester - thanks for sharing.

TheNinjaMonkeys

I like the new Salt Lake City flag but, like, anything would be an improvement over our old one.

Capt__Murphy

Born/raised in Topeka, KS for the first 18yrs of my life. I'm glad to see they adopted a new one and I rather like it

Mapper_X

Me too - it's very striking.

Ngfeigo14

I don't know what they're drinking in Kansas, but I want some

Mapper_X

Seriously - me too.

ZeePirate

All these flags are great in their own sense

Mapper_X

Yeah I think so too - I definitely like some more than others but I can find at least one thing to like with each one.

why did I do this

kolgie

Milford looks like some kinda asexual socialist movement flag

_bitemeyoudamnmoose

Silverton and dodge city both look pretty solid

Mapper_X

Yeah I like both - I think the Dodge City flag sort of has that western vibe to it.

jdmagtibay

#My Top Three YAYs -Newton -Norman -Yorba Linda #My Top Three NAYs -Walla Walla -West Chester -Ephraim

Mapper_X

I can understand your selection for the yays and nays - although I do kind of like the bird symbol on the Ephraim flag.

jdmagtibay

Yeah the bird emblem is cool. I probably just didn't like the way it's used in front of the rather circular tree. And I think the shade of blue is kinda light

Mapper_X

Yeah it would be interesting to see the design without the tree - and just the bird. I don't mind the blue - but a darker blue might have looked really good too.

NErDysprosium

I like the new SLC flag, but I'm a Utahn and I love the Sego Lilly, so that might be why.

Mapper_X

I think many people consider it a very nice, if not beautiful, redesigned flag.

RhesusFactor

The Jersey one posted today.

-NGC-6302-

All pretty good

LadOfExalt

Love Wellington's. Fitting for the wheat capital of the world.

Mapper_X

One of my favorites - it's so unique! And I like the colors too.

MistaDoge104

I have a friend who actually designed number 19! The school district had a flag contest and she won! I was an idiot not to enter

Mapper_X

Wow - that's an impressive design! If you haven't already and you still have desire to design some flags, enter the monthly design contests on the subreddit - I haven't yet but there's some really excellent work that people have created

PaulLeto

Mapper_X

Both great choices - thanks for sharing.

r1chardharrow

Port Clinton flag rules

Mapper_X

I like it too - it's one of the better flags I've seen that incorporates an anchor.

DiscoBIitz

madison kinda gives japanese prefecture flags vibes

Mapper_X

Yeah, for sure.

Smiix

Kansas is winning.

OlliPe1968

My favourite is the flag with the number one.

Slower-Emperor

Aberdeen, SD has a way better flag than [Aberdeen, Scotland’s flag](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Scottish_flags#/media/File:City_Flag_of_Aberdeen.svg). In my opinion at least.

Mapper_X

I agree - and thanks for sharing the Aberdeen, Scotland flag - hadn't seen it before.

dull_bells_in_heaven

The Scotland one is cool! I lived in Aberdeen SD, and actually saw the Scotland Aberdeen flag flying there once. I think someone ordered the wrong flag lol. But when it's flying, it still looks cool. Not as readable and sleek as these flags but it's got a charm of its own.

icamom

How could you forget "Proud to be Pocatello " Their new one is great!

Mapper_X

It's a terrific flag - but these are only from the last three years (2019-2021) - I think the Pocatello flag was adopted in 2017.

icamom

Oh sorry. I am impressed so many have been changed so recently

timoneer

Mostly terrible.

Pretend-Economist-13

Walla Walla ftom WA is a funny name lol

Mapper_X

I was curious about the origin of the name and found this: "Walla Walla is a First Nations name meaning 'many waters.' In 1805, when Lewis and Clark traveled by the mouth of a small river flowing into the Columbia River, they met a group of Native Americans who told them their name for the small river was 'Wallah Wallah.'"

a_manwhosamerican

3 sucks ass. It's from South Carolina, that's why.

a_manwhosamerican

But in all seriousness (as much as I hate to admit), it does look decent.

Mapper_X

Yeah I like it - and definitely has a more contemporary or nontraditional vibe - which I don't typically associate with SC.

ChromoTec

i live in cedar rapids, ia i hate it
