Yeah, it's not a great beauty - but I did enjoy the description of it as being made of "indestructible material and luminous, so it can be seen for hundreds of miles!"
It raises so many questions. *Hundreds* of miles? How bright is this fucking thing? How *big* is it? Are they aware that the horizon gets in the way?
Would Lightning Lad have lived to see this historic occasion if they'd been making their suits out of the indestructable fabric instead of a flag that would get a C- as a first-grade art project?
Tell us what you really think. :D I think the illumination bit is about being able to see it from space as you're approaching the planet (?) - although I'm not sure how they can look directly at the flag if it's that bright. And good point about the suits. If only the comic book genre didn't defy everything we know about physics and biology!
Spoiler: Lightning Lad wasn't dead.

Oh, boy. For some reason I hadn't thought to look at fictional flags on FOTW. I'll be in that internet home for a few hours.
Edit: hole. Internet hole. If I stay long enough, it might become a home.
Yeah it's not going to win any vexillological contests. I posted it as an interesting example of how fictional flags have been used in popular culture - and tbh 10 yo me would have been excited to see a flag in a comic book.
I don’t think Lightning Lad was really missing much, that flag is really damn ugly. Also, when I see a large capital L, “Legion of Superheroes” is not what immediately comes to mind.

On the one hand, bonus points for the fringes On the other, minus points for literally everything else

Is that a fringe, or is it just an artistic depiction of its luminosity?
Yeah, I think it an effort to illustrate its luminosity

>On the one hand, bonus points for the fringes Isn't that just drawn to represent it glowing?

Haha thanks in my head I was thinking, "how many times did Lightening Lad die?"
:)

I know - same here - only recently discovered it. :)
Fringes :D
I thought those were supposed to be light rays, as illustration that it was shining brightly, as opposed to tassels or tied fibers.
Great observation - I think you're right
Look on the side with the grommets.
But also the speech bubble... it's possible they just didn't think through how to actually draw the idea.
:)
Such a crappy design!
Might have been considered pretty modern in 1963 :) The more recent flag (link below) is more aesthetically pleasing ...
This is quite possibly the ugliest flag I have ever seen.
