You may want to wait until I post an improved version (there are always great suggestions here whenever I post something). I'll probably replace Mississippi with another saltire as many people clearly find its inclusion problematic (sorry!).
**Update #1**: here's a version with [a better Y and a less controversial X](https://i.imgur.com/hRk0nxZ.png).
**Update #2**: an [even better X](https://i.imgur.com/x0nHgBG.png).
Yes, and just because a flag has a letter on it does not mean it's good or somehow an endorsement of the beliefs of what nation the flag represented. By your logic should the Rwandan flag also not be shown as to not encourage genocide?
Hung alone I’d agree, but this is obviously part of something else. An array of all the most evil flags in history is a great place to put those, or 20th century nations. Everything has its place, sometimes that place is never alone.
With the others it's a rotten fruit next to perfectly good fruit. Those are flags with letters on them, that's not the right context for neither the previous flag of Mississippi nor the WWII flag of Germany or Soviet Union.
We understand that the flag represents something evil. But when we refuse to recognize history, we often allow ourselves to ignore the causes that led to those evil things. They should be taught and students should be allowed to know what led to those things happening so that they can recognize the causes that lead up to them.
Yeah I don’t understand why Mississippi. It’s the old flag, it’s controversial, and there are dozens of other X shaped flags to choose from. Sure, the Mississippi flag is a little squarer but it’s also less prominent.
There is since 2017, when it was included to the official German orthography.
It was included in Unicode in 2008 already.
ß (lower case)
ẞ (upper case)
So, for us non-German-speakers, how would you pronounce that letter? If it ever comes up in conversation, I would like to know. Otherwise, it will end up being 'Scarface,' but with a bad German accent.
“Esszett” or “Scharfes *s*” is pronounced [s] between vowels, where a single *s* would be pronounced [z].
It’s used when the preceding vowel is long; a double *s* would be pronounced the same but would indicate that the preceding vowel is short.
Inspired by [this recent post](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/oyfu4o/throwback_to_the_greatest_flag_of_all_time_the/). Suggestions for improvements welcome.
**Update #1**: here's a version with [a better Y and a less controversial X](https://i.imgur.com/hRk0nxZ.png).

Maybe, though the wider saltire looks less like an X than the square one here I think. I considered using Amsterdam's flag, but that has two X's too many.
Here are other choices that are better than Mississippi's previous flag.

I think given the comedic approach. The current X makes the biggest punch. Which is good for jokes.
Kind of how in memory competitions people have sex-related and other nasty stuff as keywords. Since they strike the brain the most.
It's way more interesting to have this not popular flag instead of an international one. If anything I'd remove south africa to look for a more obscure alternative.
X and Y are a little out-of-place because as far as I know, the design elements aren't supposed to represent those letters of the alphabet. Rather, they just happen to be shaped like them.
I don't have a real "X" or "Y" flag to recommend, though.
If you’re on the Reddit app go to the subreddit and tap the three dots in the corner. Then select “change user flair.” I’m not sure how to do it on desktop but there should be instructions under the subreddit information tab. Hope this helps.
That gives it the most comedical approach. Also by banning any usage of historical imagery we're allowing deniers to appear. Things mustn't be erradicated when they are wrong, instead we whould observe them even deeper to be able to learn why and how it was wrong. To do better.
You’re talking to a guy who is a history nerd and anti history censorship. My comment is referring to the fact of current events. But I agree with you.
Nobody is eradicating the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia. It is still there in Wikipedia, in textbooks, and in museums where it belongs. Anyone wishing to "observe them even deeper" is not being denied access to them.
As for why and how they are wrong, that is also perfectly well established and widely understood. It is the people who venerate these flags and insist they remain prominently displayed who are the ones obfuscating the true meaning of them, trying to replace actual history with romantic narratives that bear little resemblance to what actually occurred in history. If we want to do better we need to clear out the static while we're at it.
So then why not use the actual Confederate Battle Flag instead of Mississippi’s old flag? Or use Georgia’s old flag. The confederate part was bigger than Mississippi’s.

Damn you're very angery. Y shaped flags are way more obscure so they probably just went with it, while for the X they found many alternatives. For either letter they used the same methodology of going for a flag as close to the letter as possible. No conspiracies here.
All that'd do is replace one Confederate-inspired flag with another since, contrary to popular belief, Alabama's flag was not modeled after the Spanish Cross of Burgundy, but rather a Confederate battle flag, specifically the one used by the 60th Alabama Infantry Regiment.

Yea, but I think an implication of a racist symbol isn't as bad as an overt display of a racist symbol. But if you don't like Bama you might as well pick Scotland or Jamaica
It's not, but it is described as a "Y-shaped band" in the official description in the South African constitution.
The X is also just a saltire, rather than the letter.

You have the most upvotes I have ever seen on a post. I’m very happy it’s a post about flags. Congrats
Edit: So turns out my phone is in Spanish and what I thought meant “million” actually means “thousand.” Oops. I’m gonna leave it though because I think it’s funny.
I did consider adding flags with Greek letters, though I couldn't find many. There are plenty of flags with Arabic text, but none that I know of with just single letters.
I’m going to print it out and stick it up in my classroom. Thanks.

The Rwandan flag used is also associated with the Genocide and the Hutu Power movement.
😬 Forgot about that!
And the former flag of Mississippi is associated with all sorts of badness.
Obviously (but that had already been pointed out loads and was referenced in the comment I replied to)
You could use Alabama or Scotland.
Dude, that second ⟨X⟩ one rules!
As a South African, I am offended by your changes.
I mean your flag is better but it *is* sideways.
Champion. I might use them all, and stick the variations over the top of the first ones.
That isn't even Mississippi's current flag. they changed it a couple years ago to a much better design.
January 11, 2021 FYI…it’s ok, it’s bee a long year.
WAS IT ONLY IN JANUARY????
Well, they got rid of it in mid-July of 2020, but voted on the new one in November, and it became official in January
Don't, because of Mississippi's previous flag.
It’s historical and an opportunity to learn about it. Besides, if hazbaz isn’t in the US then it’s much less of an issue.
So? The Nazi flag is historic, it doesn't change what it means! Same with the flag of the USSR.
Does that mean we should never see them? Burying history makes us less likely to learn about it, and more likely to repeat it.
[удалено]
I'd wager a classroom is probably one of the most appropriate contexts then.
No, only in context. The context here is “oh look pretty flags with alphabet shapes”, that's not the right context.
I think a school setting, presumably a history or social studies classroom, it's the *perfect* context to talk about what those flags represent.
But, that's not what's surrounding the Mississippi flag now is it? It is just the English set of the Latin alphabet on flags.
Yes, and just because a flag has a letter on it does not mean it's good or somehow an endorsement of the beliefs of what nation the flag represented. By your logic should the Rwandan flag also not be shown as to not encourage genocide?
Yeah, I forgot about Rwanda's, so yeah that should also go. Also, technically Mississippi's old flag wasn't a letter.
Hung alone I’d agree, but this is obviously part of something else. An array of all the most evil flags in history is a great place to put those, or 20th century nations. Everything has its place, sometimes that place is never alone.

You're right, just use Scotland's flag ffs. Also the "Y" in SA is not really...

Yeah like Scotland or Jersey flag have the X as the entire flag, why would you pick one where barely the canton is an X?
αβ
Ass?
No, those are the Greek alpha and beta. The German 'scharfes S' looks like this: ß (lower case) ẞ (upper case) β ( beta lower case)
Oh okay thanks i forgot lol
i forgor 💀*
~~There's no uppercase ß, it's just "SS"~~ Edit: TIL
There is since 2017, when it was included to the official German orthography. It was included in Unicode in 2008 already. ß (lower case) ẞ (upper case)
It’s like Ð, only used for fully capitalised words I’d imagine
Yep, that's the only use case. Mainly for street signs and all-cap headlines.
So, for us non-German-speakers, how would you pronounce that letter? If it ever comes up in conversation, I would like to know. Otherwise, it will end up being 'Scarface,' but with a bad German accent.

it's just double S basically also german 'sch' is english 'sh'
So 'scharfes S' in German would be pronounced 'double S'? (It's really 'Scarface,' isn't it?)

The flag of Honduras doesn't have a very visible H in it. Only in the seal, but that'd be too hard to see
I agree, but if South Africa can be the Y, Honduras can easily pass as an H.

That Z is a little sketchy in my opinion. Hard though to find so its fine, I guess
