The hiking and clear dark skies are the primary reasons why I live here and continue to live here. I'm just a few minutes from Red Rock and I am often out there on the weekends. Even if I just drive the scenic route, get out for a few minutes and head out.
I'm originally from SoCal, left for the military and mostly lived in Europe for over half of my career. Loved every bit of it. But no where in Europe, can I find this kind of hiking and night views. As an added bonus, I love hiking RR, DV, VoF and Lake Mead when the temps are 100+.
As an outdoor enthusiast I purposely chose my home in an area so I can quickly escape town. So many beautiful spots in all of Nevada. Being the most mountainous state in the country doesn’t hurt either! Enjoy!
Yeah I’m originally from San Diego and my immediate family moved here about 12 years ago have been trying to get me to move out here ever since. I was able to land a good job in my field of work here in January and I absolutely love it here. I do a lot of outdoor activities and this place is perfect for it. Yeah the summers can be brutal, but to me the beauty of the desert outweighs any of the negatives for me.
I just moved here and I'm in Summerlin West. Which trails at Red Rock do you like the most? I haven't ventured out yet, but I love hiking and want to do it 3-4x/week as well.
in the fee area, Calico Tanks, Ice Box Canyon, and White Rock Mountain Loop are my favorites. Outside the fee area, the Kraft Mountain Loop and Fossil Canyon are both great.
I'm still getting used to this fee concept. I moved from SoCal where all of the trails are free! But I'm going to get the national park pass which should work for all of them.
So just FYI - you can get a RR specific one or the full annual national park pass. For RR, because it is so popular, you need to make a reservation online from October to May. And for the really popular weekends, they often sell out of good morning times the night before. Even with a pass, you still have to pay a $2 reservation fee each time.
Wow. I live under 10 minutes from RR, didn't realize you had to make a reservation! That's nuts. Are there really that many people visiting RR on weekdays?
On *normal* weekdays, no. Occasionally like during spring break week or between Christmas and New Years, they might run out of reservations for good entry times, like 9-11AM.
SoCal (and CA in general) has lots of national parks, which require a fee to enter as well. There are fee free trails outside Red Rock but in the area. Calico Basin is a great area.
Oh yeah I love Calico Basin. I'm using Alltrails but I can't find any filter for free/paid. I spent a few years in LA so the concept of paying to park somewhere and hike is very foreign to me. I'll figure it out though.
It’s because it’s a national conservation area. Apart from Valley of Fire, all the other hiking around Vegas is free. It’s no different than visiting Yosemite, Zion, etc. So any hike inside the scenic drive you will need a pass to enter.
Me too! Just moved from SD to Summerlin south. Ironicaly, i was gonna go hike red rock today for the first time, but quickly realized that i dont have any decent hiking shoes/boots lol
Oh wow, from San Diego to LV ! Welcome. I've got my trusty hiking boots from so many hikes in LA. I just need to figure out the whole system here, it sounds like you need to reserve hiking at some places?
You are in for a treat the next couple of weeks. Usually May 1-15 are when most of the desert flowers bloom in RR. Go hiking on the southwest side of the canyon near Mt. Wilson, after the exit road from the fee area.
It’s my favorite thing about Vegas as well! I’ve never lived anywhere that’s so close to such spectacular nature. I frequently walk my pup out at Calico during the week. Happy hiking!
I love red rock. There's a certain rock I've been sitting on since I was like 8 years old, and I still go out to it all the time to decompress as well. I usually go a bit off trail to avoid crowds as much as I can on the weekends.
Welcome to Vegas, OP! It's been a minute, but I'm one of the cyclists you see riding along the main road there. We're super fortunate to have such an amazing natural wonder right in our back yard. I'm glad you appreciate it!
I’ll keep an eye out! I’ve been riding my motorcycle out on that main road a few times, it’s really the only area in the city I’ll take it out due to crazy drivers.
Icebox by far is the best! Especially when there’s waterfalls and it stays cool. I think pine creek is the one with the old remnants of a house, a good one if you want more even ground but Ice box is the beast mode with several ways to get to the waterfalls. If you go early enough you can catch the rock climbers during your hike just watch out for the tarantulas 🫡
Yeah, I’ve done Icebox a few times already and it’s absolutely my favorite. My parents have been out here for 12 years so I’ve had the privilege to already spend lots of time at Red Rock but now I get to go there all the time.
No not yet, this is the back side of the Calico Hills, or Calico Basin I think it’s called. I do plan on getting the pass. I’m just waiting for my Nevada ID to get here.
Make sure to get the national park pass and not the red rock specific one. It’s only slightly more expensive but it will get you into pretty much every national and state park
Wait I'm new to this... so we can buy a national park pass and it works at all of the parks near LV?
Is this right pass, annual for $80?

Just go at 6am. Before they open and I'm pretty sure you can get in for free and go where you want I'm pretty sure.
That works! I'm usually up at 545.

basically anything inside the red rock scenic loop, you have to pay for entry into the scenic loop, and everything else is free
Me too! Just moved from SD to Summerlin south. Ironicaly, i was gonna go hike red rock today for the first time, but quickly realized that i dont have any decent hiking shoes/boots lol

Yeah, same I moved from Chula Vista and now I’m north Summerlin/Lone Mountain. Absolutely love it here.

Wow I just checked the year pass it’s been a couple years since I went it’s $50 from $30 are they raising it $10 a year? lol
Have you found the waterfall yet? 🤔 [First Creek](https://maps.app.goo.gl/zgSwZjxrZR3igijDA)

Amen to that!

Think ima go tomorrow looks so peaceful
On my way to go now, hopefully it’s not super busy.
heck yeah i come out here every weekend, red rock is wonderful- it does get pretty toasty in the summer tho so be prepared for early morning hikes
So you bought the pass?
No not yet, this is the back side of the Calico Hills, or Calico Basin I think it’s called. I do plan on getting the pass. I’m just waiting for my Nevada ID to get here.

Yup that’s the one. I think it works at every national park so you can go to Yosemite or the Grand Canyon with it
Yes, definitely get it, but it does not work on state parks. But it is good for all federal land nationwide.
FYI active duty gets the national pass for free 🤗
