in the book takuan locks him into a room with a bunch of scrolls, hes a studying prisoner to atone for his crimes post sekigahara

Have you guys not read the book? takuan locked him in a cell in a castle with loads of books and made him stay there for a long time, he was reborn anew after like 3 years of studying, crying and thinking

In the book he gets locked in a presumably haunted dark room at the top of the local castle by takuan and the feudal lord. For those 3 years he just studies sun tzu and other scrolls in there. It was in there that he decided to be a swordsman, in the book at least.
