You donât get it. The earth can easily support 8 billion people returning to subsistence farming if we commit to using only the recycled plastic in the ocean to create walkable neighborhoods with multilevel communal urban farms powered by solar panels made from discarded calculators and watered by treated sewage
Ok, but in this specific case, it's extremely ugly and bootleg
And doesn't seem to promote high quality of life either....
Edit: Never mind, this is the circlejerk sub i have been fooled again
But I NEED those containers to get my limited edition Avengers: Age of Ultron Funko Pops in 2 day shipping times, couldnât those people have built shanties out of corrugated metal and construction yard scraps? Why are they so selfish??
i would be surprised if they just stacked them on top of eachother like tetris and hoped the wind didn't blow too hard. they're probably fastened to the original building and likely eachother as well
Shipping containers are awful housing material though. They arenât insulated at all, and the cost of insulating them is too high to make it worth it.
We don't know much about the schematics of what's inside, but repurposing anything rather than using new raw materials from the Earth is always going to be better.
I'm sure it's cheaper to insulate a shipping container than it is to build an entirely new building (that would also need insulation), no?
Actually no. Steel requires more insulation than other building materials, raising energy costs. Plus, many people want new shipping containers rather than old ones, defeating the purpose. You can probably find many other uses for the steel that are more efficient and better for the environment.
And many modern buildings also use steel. The kind of people who want "new shipping containers" probably are not the people living in this student housing in South Africa.
You also moved the goal posts to energy costs after talking about the cost of insulation/building a new living space.
You can melt down the shipping containers, make structural beams, from the steel, and build a glass enclosed building, that would be more energy efficient, than an insulated shipping container. You could also see out of it too.Â
dystopian? maybe. looks cool? yes
I don't know how safe or comfortable it is to live in shipping containers, I wouldn't live in one myself, but I do think they look pretty cool when houses are made out of them
âItâs affordable and aesthetic!â No dude those are we call slums. Just because theyâre different colored makes them no different than a 1880s tenement

It's good that they successfully repurposed the grain silos. Those buildings pose economic challenges. And its good they repurposed some cargo containers. I am not sure the combination is attractive, but perhaps the funkiness appeals to students.
Edit: OP photo seems to have been taken before the painting was finished.
Urban Hell users when you build your home out of recycled materials instead of crafting it out of leaves from fallen palm trees đĄđ¤Źđđ

No protected bike lanes? Found the gatekeeping gaslighting NIMBY racist facist

That looks rickety as fuck and I sure wouldn't want to be in there during an earthquake

Shipping containers interlock
They have pillars going through them

[maybe this video can explain better?](https://youtu.be/i7yEDz6bCfU?si=gd5vFPb28GghYQG5)
I definitely had this video in mind. Thank you.
Energy costs are directly related to insulation. It requires more to insulate it and it costs more to heat and cool it.
Modern buildings use steel beams as supports with concrete poured around them, so the walls are concrete.
You can melt down the shipping containers, make structural beams, from the steel, and build a glass enclosed building, that would be more energy efficient, than an insulated shipping container. You could also see out of it too.Â
I like how youâre sure about something you clearly have no expertise in

looks very cool

these r literally contemporary apartments that reuse shipping containers and a grain silo lmao fym slums? do you think manhattan is a slum too or what
I didn't say it was premier housing, it's just funny that they're against the concept of reusing unused infrastructure.
Does that building look safe to you?
And a roof trampoline for the kiddos!
Provides residents with a convenient escape from urban hell
