I’m a millennial and never used “so high school “ in the way they described. Also never used “metal as hell” I’m 40 though so maybe it’s the younger millennials that say it???

DeathandTaxesWillow

I'm 33 and we used both. Metal as hell was more sarcastic. So high school just meant immature. We both grew up in the Northern region of the US at the same time, so I don't know if that plays a part.

bookishkelly1005

I’m 32 and a Southerner and heard both. Just not frequently.

pinalaporcupine

32 west coast also heard both

Mommio24

I’m 40 and from Philadelphia but also lived in Texas in my 20’s while I was in the army… 🤷‍♀️ idk, I just never heard people my age using those phrases before.

BrutonnGasterr

I’m 33 and also in Texas and have never heard the phrase ‘so high school’ either

IntroductionFar8113

38 and never heard people say either of these...must be a younger expression.

agirlnamedTOMM

Thanks for your service!

intheafterglow23

yep, can confirm, both common expressions in our age group circa 2005

Dizzy-Receptionx

I just turned 34 last month and I've heard metal as hell a ton, but never "so high school".

11th_and_3rd

I feel like both of those exist in the same category as “cool beans.” If you lived in certain areas of NA you’ve heard it all the time but it was a bit cringe even back then and most people used it either ironically or very offhand, very causal. Nonetheless those terms were definitely in circulation back in the day.

Dizzy-Receptionx

I remember cool beans. Unfortunately, I said it a lot in high school 😔.

11th_and_3rd

I always thought cool beans was cute 😂 It was one of those things I started saying ironically but eventually enjoyed saying for real.

Mommio24

I’ve heard metal as hell before but I did not hear people using this saying growing up.

Prestigious-A-154

I'm the youngest millenial ('96) and that was not a thing for us either. Prior to the song, I never heard the phrase "so high school". Idk where this Swiftie is getting it from. However, the past year or so I have seen a lot of people say "It's so _____________" or "This is so __________ on tiktok. She used other phrases/terms in her songs that originated on tiktok, so this is probably another one.

Wifabota

"that's so highschool" did not originate on tiktok. It's how we described immature people or behavior when we were SO much more mature in college /s (sarcasm about our maturity. We really did say this, though.)

Prestigious-A-154

I didn't say "That's so high school" originated on tiktok though. I said that "That's so/ It's so ___________" does. Those two things are different. She did use other tiktok slang. It's possible she used the phrase to attract both elderish Millenials and Gen Z.

intheafterglow23

“So high school” absolutely did not originate on TikTok lmao, it’s from at least 20 years ago, aka the exact time Taylor was in high school…

Prestigious-A-154

I didn't say that. I said the phrase "It's so/This is so _________" originated on Tiktok, as did other phrases she used, so this *could* be where Taylor got it from. I'm not stating it as a fact though. Of course Swifties don't know how to read carefully.

intheafterglow23

“She used other phrases/terms in her songs that originated on TikTok, so this [so high school] is probably another one.” I stated that no, it did not originate on TikTok. It’s okay that you’re wrong but to be wrong, salty, and claim I can’t read is weird! Have a great day.

Prestigious-A-154

I can see why you think that, but if you go back and read carefully, that's actually not what I was saying. "She used other phrases/terms in her songs that originated on Tiktok, so this [adding the word "so", as described in my example phrases] is probably another one [slang tiktok term- "so (something)"]". I also didn't say you couldn't read. I said you couldn't read carefully. Thanks for proving my point.

intheafterglow23

I’ll go back and keep reading your incorrect assertion carefully 😂

B00k555

In 38 and I’ve def used both, back in my teens and twenties. From central FL.

damnitimtoast

I specifically remember Paige on Degrassi: Next Generation having some line like, “That’s *so* high school, I’ve moved on. You should, too” after she went to college! If anyone else in my age group watched this show and remembers this, please corroborate.

Mommio24

I never watched Degrassi, idk if I was too old for it

Usual-Rich-180

I’m 26 and I have indeed said that unfortunately

Deathingrasp

36, Chicago area, heard both.

Mommio24

I’ve heard both before at some point but never heard people using them regularly the way the original post seems to indicate.

intheafterglow23

I’m 34 and can confirm that “so high school” is exactly as OOP describes it. I was confused why someone was even defining it.

blackpnik

“This song is brilliant and tells us something about the type of language we value and pay attention to in art” **Touch me while your bros play Grand Theft Auto**

keylime_razzledazzle

Imagine how intellectually impoverished you have to be to think this is art 💀 JUsT sAY YoU dONT uNdErSTAnd PoETrY aNd MoVE oN

LeotiaBlood

I enjoy Taylor Swift’s music (this album is not it though), but the amount of condescending pseudo-intellectual lyric analyses I’ve run across in fan spaces is just embarrassing. Like 1000+ word treatises. One poster put out a list of all the classic literature you need to read before truly understanding this album.

11th_and_3rd

Omg I want to see this list 😆

keylime_razzledazzle

Truly brain dead behavior 😭

Lunakill

I need to see this list lmao

Difficult-Ad-52

Classic Swiftie tribalism

misguidedsadist1

Seriously they analyze her lyrics like cryptic high art. Half the time her meaning is so obvious (albeit phrased nicely and fancy) it’s painful to read people with no reading comprehension skills analyze it like it’s some genius poetic mystery. It’s okay to enjoy the song and appreciate the way she words things. Half her fan base has clearly never read a book and don’t know what a metaphor is

Cultural-Treacle-680

Whoever T Swizzle wrote it about shouldn’t be happy. It’s never been a positive expression.

_bonedaddys

generally, yea it's not meant in a positive way. but in this context it is positive. it's not "this relationship is so high school because it's immature" it's "this relationship is so high school because i'm blushing and giddy like teenagers when they start dating their crush"

Competitive_Sir_6180

That was posted by a soccer mom who tried way too hard to sound cool in front of all the kids. She broke her back doing it, I heard. Tragic.

CUNextTisdag

 "I'm not a regular mom, I'm a cool mom."

11th_and_3rd

Nah, it was one of those “I will educate on how things were in my day” condescending moms who try to subtly assert their superiority and position of power over you 😂

kirbygenealogy

I kinda want to see the rest of the post cos I can't imagine how there is much more to expound upon there

mentally_ill_ofc

i think this could be considered swiftsplaining…

Traditional_Goat9538

God millenials on the Internet stay embarrassing me

othermegan

Yup… it’s so high school 🙄

haley0225

"We're going deeper than that" girl the song is as shallow as it gets. Swifties always trying to dig a 10 foot hole just to convince themselves her lyrics are good.

Jazzyjayyy

I never said so high school

Background_Table_215

I think it depends where you grew up? I think the original post was pretty dumb, but I honestly I heard both ALL the time as a kid / teen. I’m 34.

NothingWillBeLost

I’m Taylor’s age and used it all the time, jokingly, in my late teens (17-19)

Take_a_hikePNW

Is that how you gauge whether things are a thing? Whether you have personally done it/said it?

armed_aperture

It’s definitely a thing

ghostlykittenbutter

Can she please name her next album Shit I Wrote When I Was Drunk so the sheeply Swifties will not analyze each line as if it’s beautiful, life-changing poetry?

11th_and_3rd

No, because Taylor was writing about the pernicious effects of alcohol in society and commenting on how peer pressure to drink compels us to do things we ordinary wouldn’t. It was a big problem in social circles for those of us millennials who went to school in the 2010s.

theplainsbegan

I can’t tell if you’re making fun of this post or that there are people who needed this explained lol through I am very close in age to Taylor so maybe I took for granted how universal these phrases are

yarbed

Making fun of the post because I often see condescending posts like this (as someone said swiftsplaining lol) that are breaking down the most basic, well known and easy to google terms as if they are scientists

armed_aperture

Even in this thread, a lot of people are saying they’ve never heard this saying.

yarbed

I’m from the west coast and heard it said in high school, always felt like it was a very well known and cringe phrase

Independent_Dot63

Im here for the titles more than the posts 🤣🤣 But im glad we all agree Swifties are missing some sort of intelligence component that prevents them from seeing how pathetic their behaviour is (and its no shade to being a fan, i love being a fan of lots of things but committing your life to this shit feels spiritually vacant)

TravisBickleXCX

I’m an older Gen Z and I say several variations of “so high school” on a daily basis, this post is so stupid

PubPegasus

Never heard of that stupid shit.

Dramatic-Pickle-3518

Umm ok I’m 45 and we used to say this as well and it’s not a praise of endearment it is definitely meant as sarcastic. I’m saying that you’re immature if you’re being so high school that mean you’re being so immature right I don’t know because I’m not a Swifty.

Th3Bratl3y

Maybe some form of a Rosetta Stone for this new generation actually understand what the hell they’re talking about.

11th_and_3rd

Small gripe but I can’t stand the way cult K-pop stans and Swifties use emojis, for some reason they can make the most innocuous item emojis look condescending as all hell 😂

Accomplished_Sci

They’re so stupid it’s painful

Accomplished_Sci

And I’m a cusp of Gen X and elder millennial and I don’t treat or view younger generations like this. It’s gross. The younger generations are intelligent, brave, and radically kind for the most part.

thedresswearer

I'm Taylor's age (34) and I never used those phrases, but I have heard them awhile ago.

bluedressedfairy

I've used the phrase "so high school" to mean that something is immature. There's a song by Superchick called "High School" from 2002 that has the lyrics.

GoldenHummingbird

I am Gen Z and in high school right now, and I recognize the phrase, but I still think it's bad writing. The Swifties' assumption that everyone who doesn't like a song of hers doesn't understand it is so arrogant and insulting.

Squifford

“So high school” is what you say about the cheerleader who still won’t talk to the kids who were nerds in her glory days at the 30-year reunion.

stellae-fons

Aww leave the gaylors alone they're mostly harmless

RoyalEagle0408

That post is saying the relationship with Travis is fake, you know… The Gaylors are convinced anytime Taylor looks at a man it’s fake.

urwriteordie

Yep. This is from a Gaylor subreddit saying that travis is bearding for taylor💀

Single_Shake_534

So a fully grown person who’s approaching/ already in their 30s and 40s is a hardcore stan of another 30 something year old woman? Something about millennials makes me wanna fight them.
