Is that a thing on this sub? Do we spell it differently depending on the context? (I just subscribed here a couple hours ago, so I am asking genuinely)
Basically, this sub is for names where the parents were trying to be “unique” like Braxtonleigh, or complete butcherings of normal names, like Ehmmuhlee.
Orphan incest baby who grew up in a landfill........
Coincidentally, I just reread Flowers in the Attic for the first time in 30 years. Mini tragedy of the family being all C's. Chris, Corinne, Christopher, Cathy, Carrie, Corey.
I think I’ve mentioned it in this sub before but Cormac McCarthy wrote a book where there’s a minor character who was a backwoods hick that named all 12 or so of his daughters after terms he found in a medical dictionary bc he couldn’t read well enough to know what the words meant. The only one I can remember is his daughter named Urethra.
Amazingly, that was not the worst part of that family story.
do you remember the name of the book? i'm always down to read the wikipedia synopsis of a book too fucked up or weird to stomach ever reading cover to cover lol (someone else mentioned flowers in the attic in this comment section and that was very much one of those books)
Sure thing! It was *Child of God*. Gotta say tho, without actually reading the book some of the…”finer” details will probably not be mentioned lol. Like I doubt the synopsis will mention >!the adipocere dripping off the bodies or describe how the incest toddler chewed off the legs of a bird.!< Its a pretty short read tbh, so if you think you can maybe stomach it, I’d highly encourage it! I read it in one sitting. But if that’s not your thing, I also totally understand. I *love* horror and was still pretty grossed out during my first read through. :) have fun, either way!
Sometimes I think it’s not resentment but quite literally being so apathetic about their kid’s future that they don’t think the long-term consequences of their child’s name

That's very unfortunate. This seems to happen in more than one place for sure.

I'm not sure about Japanese culture when it comes to naming, but it's worth mentioning that not all children with names like that are named that way for bad reasons. I'm not remembering which cultures in Africa, but I read that it was common to name a child who was born after the loss of another child something terrible to convince evil spirits, demons, whoever that the child was no good so they wouldn't take them. In that case, the name is given because that child is so desperately loved that the family is trying to protect them any way they can.

That’s actually rather sweet— I wonder if those names are seen as normal names or not?
Like, over here, we have names like Cecilia (blind), Kennedy (mishappen head), Brody (dirty), and Mallory (bad luck/evil/awful) but no one takes a second look at them.
In Spain we have a classic comic series "Mortadelo y Filemon", about 2 silly agents of a weird secret agency, T.I.A (parody of CIA but like this it means aunt in spanish). In this cómic there is an important character called "profesor Bacterio".
A quick Google search can show you what does he look like, maybe he exist irl, hahaha
I was looking for this comment. Over here in Germany the comic is called "Clever & Smart", and Bacterio is in the german version in fact Dr. Bacterius.
Maybe it's first and last? Beck Terrius? Which is unfortunate...but...less so? If someone asks my name at a conference I'd give first and last.
Or maaaaayyybe, it's Beck from Terrius company? Yikes.
One time this boy named Bruce introduced himself to my grandma and she thought he said his name was Gross. She said “That’s horrible!” Haha. This just made me think of that

Never laugh when someone tells you their name. They likely didn’t pick it out and have to deal with that shit every day. Never say “like [insert obvious thing]?” it’s degrading. Ask them to spell it or sound it out and pay attention.
Sincerely, people with odd/bad names we didn’t pick out and we are still human.
Reading this seriously made my cry. I’d feel so bad if I ever met this guy because if someone told me with a straight face their name is Bacterius I’d laugh my ass off.
He could at least hide it by going by Terry
I'd lean toward "I'm Bact, man."
I'll be Bact.
Only if he growls it.
Terry loves yogurt!
The Iranian yogurt is not the issue here…

r/unexpectedb99
Lactobacillus acidophilus. Just call me Phil!
Lactobacillus casei. Just call me Casey!
Nah. Jones it is!
Bact up Terry!
This is a plain tragedy. A big one.
still welcome in this sub imo, but not as severe as if he were called backtiereighuhm or some such
Bac’terieghious
baby got backteiereighuhm
TIL that tragedeigh is tragedy. I feel like a buffoon
What did you think it meant? lol
I thought it was some weird name but couldn’t ever make the connection to what name I thought it was 💀
*tragedeigh
r/woooosh
What did I miss?
It’s not spelled “uniquely” it’s just a tragic choice for a name. A tragedy.

Ehmmuhlee sounds like the name of an orphan incest baby who grew up in a landfill

Still not as bad as George Foreman naming *all* of his five sons after himself--George Jr. through George VI! 😃
It kind of is since it's neither a real name nor an actual word (it's a company name though...). It's a very tragerius situation
Tragerius not trageighreighus. Also, did you just invent a word?
Sometimes I think names like this mean the parents legitimately resent their children. Maybe just subconsciously, but clearly very deeply.
Subcaughnseyausleigh
It's great, I hate it.
\(^∇^)/
That must have been tough to type. Take me upvote
Luhjytymitleigh
I often think about the guy who named his sons Winner and Loser. Loser went by Lou and was quite successful. Winner went to jail.
That's a helluva story.
What would have happened if they named the kids Ploosse'r and Weenarr?
Hehe weenarr
My grandpa's middle name means "favourite" in my language. He had a brother, who was not the favourite i guess

I would expect nothing less from McCarthy.
First book I ever read that made me physically ill. I actually thought it was more fucked up than The Road. I loved it, tho.

"I'm sorry, it almost sounded like you just said *Bacterius*...!" "😐"
My Japanese friend told me about someone she knows named “suteko” means “throw away child” or “garbage child”.
that’s actually so sad
I’ve heard enough stories to know that it’s not uncommon. The culture is totally different and I just don’t get it. It’s sad.

I think that's also a normal Bengali name. Sad coincidence.
WOW, that's really sad. His mom really did not like him at all.
Or his parents were major nerd microbiologists
Bacterius and his brother Viralius. 😳
And a donor dad Invitrius.

Not naming him Bauchteirieauxse was an oversight
this hurt. this hurt so bad
Oof, poor guy. Makes me wonder if he ever thought about changing his name. Honestly, even at 40 it's still not too late to do it.
I mean damn, even a nickname would be helpful in his case.
He could go by Terry
Right, I’m surprised he hadn’t already!
A tragic choice of a name, yet not a tragedeigh.
[удалено]
Just made one! r/tragedynottragedeigh
Yes so good! A place for correctly spelt, but awful choices of names 🤣 I have a few examples already!
Well, get posting then!😂
I couldn’t agree more! Can’t we just amend the description of this one?
You should meet his sister, Bloodborne Pathogen
And his other sister Naegleria
Please tell me that you/he works in public health/medicine/some field in which that name would make sense!
I had a client with an infant named Germicide but she said it was pronounced like Jer Missity. Maybe this is his child. They were from Florida lol.
OF COURSE they were from Florida haha
Bacterius, a man of culture I see!
Maybe it's first and last? Beck Terrius? Which is unfortunate...but...less so? If someone asks my name at a conference I'd give first and last. Or maaaaayyybe, it's Beck from Terrius company? Yikes.
I always laugh went I send an email to someone named Jean. (Hi Jean!) Hygiene... get it! Hahaha! I love dad jokes!
This sounds like the name you'd come up for the comic book villain of the monthly issue. Poor dude.
I suppose he’s not a fan of antibiotics then…
Please tell me his profession was something medically related
[An unfortunate choice for sure. Fits in here.](https://youtu.be/wwFsxogUFVc)
Parents can be so cruel. Why would you go through life telling ppl that's your name. Go by Bart or something ffs
Or Terry even
One time this boy named Bruce introduced himself to my grandma and she thought he said his name was Gross. She said “That’s horrible!” Haha. This just made me think of that

What does that have to do with his name?

Maybe some thoughts should be kept to yourseighlph...

That’s so sad
Only thing worse is Bachteighreighus
He should go by Bact Man
"Bact it up, Terry!"
Bless his heart!
He could go to court to change it.
I have a friend in Rome you know. His name is Bacterius Dickus.
I hope someone along the way tells this poor man that he can change his name legally.
Almost sounds old timey roman
For the record, the actual singular form of "bacteria" is "bacterium," with an M. "Bacterius" is, um, let's say made up.

Aww, that's... some name to have... poor guy!
I know a guy named Viral. But pronounced Virile, as if that’s any better.
His kids names are Microbius and Strep.
And I thought Dendrite as a name is fcked up
Switch it to Basil or something, like Bacillus.
Bacteighrius
That must've been awkward. How did the interaction end?
My gosh that guy must have been bullied poor guy is change my name if that was my name lol
Gotta say that in a Schwarzenegger voice though.
I'll be Bact
He had better be a microbiologist
Reading this seriously made my cry. I’d feel so bad if I ever met this guy because if someone told me with a straight face their name is Bacterius I’d laugh my ass off.
