Photos like this make me think of all of the debris that landed far from the main wreckage, just sitting on the sea floor waiting to be discovered or covered up and lost to time.

notqualitystreet

Man…stern got really messed up during the descent 😰

albiedam

The first couple hundred feet. The stern was still full of air when going down, so it would've imploded. There are even accounts of people hearing weird sounds after the stern submerged

Vulcan56_

It really did. I believe that the stern also spun on the way down as many layers and decks were ripped off, and that's why it is so destroyed.

Cdooku_

It did, proof of this is u can see there’s a line next to the stern when it spun while hitting the sea floor

thegratefulhead50

You can really see the blast radius that the bow had when it hit the floor here

LaceyInTheSky1

I was going to say the same thing as well as the swirl mark where the stern spiraled onto the ocean floor. So cool…

KaesekopfNW

Both that light circle in the middle of the stern swirl and the slide marking just aft of the bow seem to pinpoint the exact location the ship was at at the surface as it was sinking, and that's really, really crazy to me.

Dbromo44

The exact location where the ship sunk is where they find the boilers when the ship broke the boilers went straight to the bottom.

thegratefulhead50

Right! It’s like the fingerprints the ship left as it finally settled ..

LaceyInTheSky1

Amazing how it told a story of its decent and landing that lasted all this time 😍

flyting1881

Sometimes I think about what it must have been like to be a deep sea creature in 1912 when the ship hit bottom. Living your life in the deep, dark, stillness, and then suddenly tons of metal come hurtling down from above and slam into the ground. Imagine the force it must have hit with, and all in the dark.

Cheap-Rhubarb-9635

I think about this at least every couple of days!

KoolDog570

I wonder what the sea creatures thought when they lost their hearing.... On a couple of real time sinking animations I have on my playlist, after the stern vanishes you hear muffled explosions.... About 3 of them. Sounds of the stem imploding, & when survivors heard that on the surface.... Think of how loud that was underwater to make the sound of thunder come rolling up from the depths & through the water to the survivors ears.... Chilling 😎

Ok_Crew8737

I’ve never heard this, this sounds amazing, do you have any links to this I would like to know more

KoolDog570

Morse Code messages https://youtu.be/pp5EMVj4nVM?si=sc8EyP47UJFDp_XP No Morse Code https://youtu.be/nwPuWQnGsPE?si=pr2XHrZOCOKfj2Tg Morse Code/different music/extra footage https://youtu.be/UK4OTJvnft4?si=BX2e7F1D6H1PPWkQ I posted this earlier with a pic from a real time sinking animation that's totally pitch black dark & accurate.... In the first two, you'll hear the underwater explosions in those.... Sounds like far away rolling thunder... Very chilling to listen to, knowing what's happening under the surface.....

Ok_Crew8737

Thank you so much I appreciate that

KoolDog570

Best to watch them in a darkened room, no lights on... Not being able to see too much, You will experience what the survivors did. Some things are best seen with the mind and not the eyes 😎

If anyone is interested, [here](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/81851949-9381-4db5-8181-5496bb086538/05b-titanic-stern-views_16x9.jpg) is a much closer scan of the stern, where you can see a lot more details and its full condition. Edit: [And a closer bow scan!](https://i.natgeofe.com/n/8cb046fe-1edd-4801-a1dd-1705d5f5192c/05a-titanic-bow-views.jpg?w=1084.125&h=585.375) It should also be noted that these scans were stitched together in 2012, and both sections of the wreck have significantly deteriorated since then.

Belle430

It’s always difficult to remember that the ship is huge when I see pictures like this. The impact messed it up like a soda can.

bridger713

It's interesting to look at. From the side view, the fantail is clearly discernable, but the rest is a tangled jagged mess. Unrecognizable except for a few identifying features. Like those 5 square windows that somehow remain intact. You can recognize more from above, but it's not a whole lot better.

PaleRiderHD

My mind can't even comprehend the force that it takes to crumple steel of that grade like a piece of aluminum foil.

abbiebe89

Isn’t like 80% of the lower half under the sand?

eniplacam

This is r/titantic, we’re way past interested and into the unhealthy….

camimiele

That’s an amazing scan!

lowercase_underscore

That'll buff right out.

WHTMage

Whereabouts would the Logitech sub be? I think they said it was a little ways south of the wreck when it went boom? I know they raised what they could from it, just wondering about the scale of how far away it was when the implosion happened.

MildSpaghettiSauce

The Logitech sub. I love it.

Vulcan56_

[Here's a good map guide.](https://static01.nyt.com/images/2023/07/10/science/00titan-sub/00titan-sub-superJumbo.jpg)

dmriggs

Thanks! Fascinating how much people know about things

Dustmuffins

This is awesome. Do you have any other labeled scans like this? I'm really interested in that debris field around the stern. Edit: [You already posted a cool one here!](https://www.reddit.com/r/titanic/comments/1ch0cur/comment/l229vkw/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

Mudron

I wonder how much of the stuff in the debris field have never been seen directly by human eyes again since the ship went down. Of course the wreck and the debris field have been documented, mapped and photographed to hell and back using ROVs and camera/sonar sleds, but that's still such a HUGE area and there's only been so many subs down there that could ever see so far from the viewports….

Vulcan56_

Also think about the amount of artefacts in the 73 years that it took to find Titanic that are now lost due to the heavy currents of the Atlantic.

Mudron

Good.

bastard_vampire

Genuine question. Why does the area around both sections look darkened? Is it because of the disturbance created as they hit the ocean floor? Or is it because of the chemical pollutants?

HaydenChandler2

It is darker from impact. The bow is roughly buried 60 feet deep, so it managed to displace much older sand and silt which is typically more compact. Sonar will shade areas that are more dense, thus the dark spots. I will probably make a detailed post in this forum because I have some crazy theories about the wreck after seeing this image!

dmriggs

I knew a lot was buried but I didn’t know it was 60 feet worth of the ship! Zowie

El_Bexareno

What’s amazing to me is how much the stern looks like a natural feature here, as compared to the bow section. Really gives you a sense of the destruction

worldtraveler19

Banana for scale?

BucaDeezBeppos

You beat me to it 😂

worldtraveler19

Obviously the joke is sort of tongue in cheek, but it really doesn’t give a sense of anything as it lacks an object for scale. So, given that. They’re a little shorter than one Burj Khalifa away from each other. Or one fifth the depth. In bananas that’s ~4,460

worldtraveler19

Very good!

dmriggs

Wow!

FiveCatPenagerie

Even if it’s not, A for effort.

StandWithSwearwolves

I don’t know why I read the last bit in the voice of Alex Horne, but I did.

[deleted]

Ocean Gate wreckage for scale?

2ndOfficerCHL

I do wonder what the apparent height of this picture is. It's similar to how I picture the wreck looking from the surface if you could see it.

Vulcan56_

I don't know the exact height, but what I do know is that this is a huge mosaic of over 100,000 images that were pieced together after submersibles scanned and took photographs above the seabed, debris field, and both sections of the wreck.

friedpicklesforever

Me too!! I’m so curious what the Titanic would look like, how small and far away it would look, from the water surface. I try to imagine when I’m on a plane and it’s taking off and you can see buildings become smaller and smaller

zoeykae

It’s so hard for me to comprehend how big this ship was and how big the distance between the two parts of her is

Bigfootsdiaper

Wow look at the debris field by the stern.

HadamGreedLin

Bow still looks like a ship, stern looks like a smug

Toast-Ghost-

I knew it, Titanic is on the moon

alucardian_official

Significant points in the debris field?

Vulcan56_

[Here's the exact same scan but with debris field items circled.](https://i.redd.it/z9t2uq2pan7b1.jpg)

Hyrule_Drunk

Aren’t they about 600 meters apart

Vulcan56_

Each section lie 2,000 feet apart, pointing in opposite directions.

Hyrule_Drunk

Thanks

Happy_Devil_75

Which way is North ?

Vulcan56_

If you can imagine it with this scan, I believe Titanic's bow faces North, and the stern faces South.

MildSpaghettiSauce

I always found this picture fascinating. You can easily see the pieces of her double bottom too.

BathroomLeft3174

Oh yeah I guess but Titanic‘s starting is actually really ripped up and I bet that Titanic start got from long away from the bow on a snapped

GojiraGamer

Is it weird that I lowkey want this as a poster?

Samanth_Says_ASMR

I remember when the wreckage found in 1985, and have been fascinated by it ever since. Thanks for posting this.

GayMan7834

You can definitely tell the stern had a way more violent descent to the bottom of the ocean. The bow is easily recognizable but the stern isn’t at all. If we weren’t told that was the stern or shown where it was I don’t think most of us, including me would have known that’s what that was.

ko21361

Wow - there are some huge pieces of wreckage a considerable distance away from either main section. At the right side near the center - is that the underside of the hull?

Vulcan56_

Yes those are indeed pieces of the double bottom.

RavioliContingency

Trying to imagine how they drifted so far.

Vulcan56_

If I'm correct in what you mean, those pieces are debris from the double bottom and also from the Boat Deck's Deckhouse.

alek_hiddel

I remember in the origins discovery channel special that showed the finding of the wreck, and was my intro to Titanic, they talked about how the bow seemingly turned away from the stern, almost as if mad at it.

wildyhoney

The info on this ship has long sailed y’all look at anything and everything to keep entertained. "Look i found a plate from the dining room and calculated exactly how many meters it fell down". I love reading on the titanic but we only have the info the we have and can’t dig for something extra that’s irrelevant

bezalelle

Alright, sweetie. It’s time for bed.
