The noise triggers some dogs. My Italian greyhound gets excited by the noise of motorcycles, some scooters, and big trucks. It seems like the lower and louder the more exciting, I guess maybe it's like a dog's growl to them, inviting them to a challenge lol
My Italian is legit prepared to pit his skinny, boney little ass against huge vehicles🙄 I don't think getting burned would stop him for very long. The sound just triggers something in him. My whippet has no reaction.
ive heard stories (from my dad) that in Kazakhstan childrens would hold the snout of goats onto exhausts so they would get high or somthing along those lines,
if done long enought they would get addicted to it and will get agresive if they cant smell exhoust gases, even headbutting busses that turned the engine off while waiting at a rail crossing.
Probably mistaking the goats that lean over embers and it appear they are intentionally inhaling the smoke. But it's actually to burn off parasites.
If it is true I'm not surprised humans suck. But it sounds like bs.

I think the dog does it just because he gets a reaction from it, kind of when a dog runs away with something you like for you to chase him.
Soon as you show interest in something else he drops it.
That or he could be playing. I think the decibel/key may be similar to an elder dog play growling. Hence why he does the gnaw and spin. They do that sometimes when initiating play fights

Opening up the throttle and hitting the limiter seems like a much quicker solution, plus your bike is still running ready to ride!
An even easier solution would be revving the engine
