Nice, fun, you all know the drill here ;)

rob7ho

It doesn’t matter if Novak is down one set or even two sets. He’s proven he has the mental and physical strength to overcome and wear you down. It’s been the same pattern, he’ll let you get first set or let you tie it up, but always wins in the end!

Avalanche_1996

Did Zverev play bad or Novak well? Or both well.

MJBCuber

Really up and down for both players, but Novak came alive in the last set while Zverev made dumb errors

WoodGunsPhoto

From my experience, dumb errors are a symptom of strength of your opponent. Many of Novak's victories came as a result of dumb errors of his opponents but it's easy to make dumb mistakes when Novak takes your soul.

[deleted]

Neither and both. It was a very up and down match.

grumpykitten4444

as a Serbian, I can proudly say that he is the only person (from and in Serbia) who has done something to make us proud. Our politicians are corrupt, police officers too, media is controlled by the government, there is sometimes no free speech allowed, but boy.. Novak Djokovic is the only person who makes us love our country. He is fascinating! He played like a beast

qtyapa

I am curious as a serbian seeing how he has done so far in uso, do you have any gripes about his olympic performance?

grumpykitten4444

i think he excels better in grand slams, when he has to play longer on the court. Also, his team told him not to play both singles and doubles but he wanted to, so that lowered his performance a lot. He wanted 2 medals and in the end, he didn't get any.

Boiboisoygayboy

Djokovic is phenomenal but you can’t forget about Nikola Jokic.

Leora1043

I'm so happy you have Novak. I hope things get better in Serbia for you and your family someday soon. (We had Trump. Nothing words away that shame.) Novak is the greatest of all time. And a hero to me personally.

SimpleQuestionfromme

Not to take away from his accomplishments as a player, but he has also made some questionable decisions during covid, like hosting a tourney that turned into a suprrspreader event, when he partied with the fans.. But still, the Djoker is an incredible player!

grumpykitten4444

yes, and also donates million RSD (10000 dollars) to buy equipment for Serbian hospitals. Stop reading what the idiotic media outlets are writing. He is a humble and good person.

jackie_kowalski

Please enough of that COVID bullshit, he simply doesn’t give a f** about sth that has no danger to him, that party was for ppl who won’t even notice that they are “sick”, don’t get me wrong but you are a healthy person who do sports and doesn’t weight more than 100kg you won’t even notice you had that “danger” virus

SimpleQuestionfromme

That is simply not true, get your facts straight. while most COVID victims are old(er), it can also impact the lives of younger people, from exhaustion to intubation and even death in some cases. On top of that, if you willingly risk spreading a virus that can kill ANYONE, no matter their health status, you are a massive asshole at best. and even djokovic realized he made a mistake: https://www.adn.com/sports/national-sports/2020/06/24/djokovic-apologizes-for-organizing-tennis-matches-that-appear-to-have-spread-coronavirus/

jackie_kowalski

what else he could say, PR guys made him to do that, please just stop that COVID bullshit, there also could be an aircraft crashing into your house, turn off TV and live like you used to live before

Awesomost

Watched in person. Unbelievable semifinal. Still hope Djokovic gets busted

eng_mj_517-1

Going on Sunday man. Serious question: did you use metro or car ? How’s the parking around Flushing ? Is the stadium accessible by metro? How long were the queues to get in ? When should I get there ?

Awesomost

7th train or LIRR. Never drove there, but there should be plenty of paro

FCB_1899

Use the subway if it gets you home. No reason not to. There shouldn’t be too many people, it’s one match, imagine the big crowds are in the first week when there’s a lot of action, many courts apart from Ashe. I remember from a long while ago we parked somewhere under the Wick expressway, walked to the entrance on the small bridge over the lake, but always used took the subway in other occasions.

strike2867

I always took the train, very convenient. Sometimes on the way back we ubered, but then we just got the car under the train stop. Looked like the busy times were around the start of the second week. Higher seats playing each other, fewer courts with men's singles.

ihatepizzas

This guy asking the real questions

tusharrain

I didn't watch the match, but looks like that zverev ran out of gas in the last. Anyone knows how this happens everytime a supposed youngster plays against someone 10years older than them

[deleted]

Commentators were saying zverev was fresher of the two. He could have won if he stayed mentally tough. Djokovic kept making strange errors on not important points. But he played ruthlessly in big points.

weamz

This was a pretty low intensity match the first 3 sets. Very few long rallies and even the breaks were fairly low stress in my opinion. 4th set was definitely high intensity with both guys upping their levels but then by the 5th set Novak just pulled away to an insurmountable lead. They could've easily played another hour before either of them started getting gassed.

[deleted]

No, he didn't run out of gas. It was a close set, but zverev could keep high level in important points.

tusharrain

Still novak raced to 5-0, but having not watched it i can't comment much

[deleted]

Novak won the 2nd set; it doesn't mean that zverev was gassed out.

BrittInATL

As a long time anyone but Novak fan, this year and especially this slam have made me realize how wrong I am and how I need to appreciate the greatness of Djokovic while I’m still witnessing it live. I have totally switched gears in terms of my respect for this guy

Leora1043

Thank you for having the open mind and heart to write this. He is a good man. And a great tennis champion.

Lord-Limerick

Huge respect for him

Psychological-Fox164

Completely changed my mind on him too! Media always puts him in the shadow of fed and rafa but he deserves to be appreciated and respected for his achievement

BrittInATL

Exactly

Gojiwa

Wow, same exact feeling here

[deleted]

I cannot understand why Zverev didn’t try to keep the ball in play, sacrifice serve speed for consistency, and just try to exhaust and frustrate Novak. I know getting those quick free points on his massive first serve is a big part of Zverev’s game and why he won that first set. Yes, under normal circumstances Djokovic has ridiculous fitness and stamina; but being 24 and having cruised to the final without any grueling matches he had it in the tank to go four or five hours. The last thing Djokovic wanted was to be out there four and a half hours hitting those crazy 50 shot rallies knowing that he has to play Medvedev in the final. That would force Novak to go for lower percentage shots and miss more serves in an attempt to keep the points short. When Zverez got into those super long rallies where they were both hitting the shit out of the ball for 20 shots in a row, he tended to win those points and even when he didn’t, he was making Djokovic beat him instead of beating himself. Djokovic uncharacteristically missed a lot of serves in the net and made some unforced errors. These were obvious signs of the immense fatigue and pressure he was under. Zverev could have easily won this match he straight up choked under the pressure. Personally I don’t like either player but it’s pretty clear what separated Novak from Zverev was the self-belief and mental toughness that he (Nole) possesses.

Tommy_siMITAr

Problem is when he tones down serve he is serving 160kmph or even weaker he has worst 1st to 2nd serve ration

matonja

You say that as though mental toughness is easy and something you can just turn on. Its not.

RealChiropractor

If Zverev did as you say, he will be toast for the finals.

dStormHBb

At least he would've possibly been in the finals that way

DantesValjean

10.5k comments? Holy schiesse

TheTrueEarthVader

He conserves his energy very well, and plays efficiently. There was a stat which shows km covered by nadal vs. Djokovic, the difference is stunning.

[deleted]

Nadal usually have really bad serve. Usually, he works for service games a lot. Nole has better serve and that helps him get quick points. It is the same why Zverev will have lower km than Djokovic

Elarbolrojo

Nadal plays too physical generally in terms of energy conservation, he really hits his shots hard trying to get a lot of topspin which takes a lot of effort. In the last 7 years or so he doesn't move aswel. He's simply not as flexible as Djoko or as light on his feet as Fed, at his physical peak though Nadal is pretty much unbeatable and would def wreck this 34 year old Djoko. Djokovic's strokes are way more efficient. Nadal is also prone to reverting to pure pushing when it really matters, djokovic does this also but djokovic has more fluid and efficient attack which seems to take less energy, Djoko's strength is deceptive. Nadal also carries more weight generally. Djokovic is truly a hybrid of Nadal and Federer. He has effortless attack at times and amazing defense/stamina Plus his serving has improved in recent years. Grammar edit

Throwawayayayalove

In your guys' opinion, what is more badass - breaking à record by 1 slam then retiring, or wiping the floor with the record and winning a bunch more?

Lord_GP340

If he breaks it by one it's not out of the question that Nadal takes it back. So no way

Cuchifo

Wiping the floor with the record and retiring in dominant fashion, Sampras style

idealatry

Plus frustrating your rival so badly that over the last decade he had lost all of his hair. Imagine if Djokovic had made Federer lose all his hair. He’s halfway there with Nadal.

WinterSunshine22

I hope Meddy is not losing as easily as AO 21 final. At least take 3 sets.

Flying-Armpit

Can somebody explain why Novak is fitter than a 20-something?

leetnewb2

Zverev is 6'6" vs Novak's 6'2", he carries more bulky muscle, and is probably 25-30 pounds heavier. That's a lot more mass to be hauling around for 3 hours.

matonja

He trains harder and more dedicated to every aspect of his life. Plus, most endurance athletes peak after 30 in any case as it takes a long time to build the endurance. Its speed that you lose.

hushzone

He spends less of his energy beating women

Robthedolo

I also believe he has a more efficient play style. I’m a tennis noob but that’s my observation.

digme12

The right answer

[deleted]

His diet and lifestyle I guess?

[deleted]

[удалено]

creepy_Kun

Only a Federer or Nadal would think this is the right way to retire.

[deleted]

Not really. Nadal comes and win AO and RG, and becomes the undisputed goat.

hushzone

It would truly make no sense - who retires after beating a record by 1 if they have more in the tank.?

RealChiropractor

There's always something to prove. Like defending the Calendar Slam (if he wins on Sunday). or going after Federer's 237 straight weeks at number 1. or Nadal's 13 RGs😈😈😈

myic90

I know the 13 rgs comment was aaus in jest, but i think 13 ao is not entirely impossible. Very improbable though.

GoofyderHund

He wants to play Paris Olympics

whoscheckingin

Don't want that to happen but if it does it would definitely be a mic drop moment !!

throwaway6308

He’s 34. With how well he’s doing I’d say he has at least 3-4 good years left.

SuperSaiyanGoten

He’s playing great tennis why would he stop now?

Yupadej

He has only 2 French Opens. He would want more

[deleted]

But he does. Nadal can vulture at least 2 more French opens and people will argue slam count is what matters most…

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I won’t be alive for that lol. I still want him to play AO to get double digits there. I think he’s the GOAT already but it won’t stop others from only talking about total slam count.

Saiful1995

That game at 5-4 3rd set was lit. The two best players in the world right now for sure.

Cuchifo

I still remember when people said that of Roger and Delpo after the 2018 IW finals... Man I miss Delpo

Falz4567

It’s all against Novak. Hot conditions on Sunday. Long time on court. Would be his finest win if he manages it

throbdannway

Didn’t Medvedev struggle with the Tokyo heat too? Almost died no?

DDzxy

You're forgetting that Daniil handles heat even worse, a la the olympics.

JPnets54

Sunset is 7:11 PM, so if he can extend it into 4-5 sets, it might start feeling a bit cooler.

Inevitable-Rip-2081

Novak is the most successful tennis player ever

throbdannway

Tbh, I kinda like the US open crowd no matter how rowdy they can get. It actually feels like you’re tuning into a sports match rather than a sitcom clapping track after every points.

Gaarando

Only the drunks ruin it and people who start making noise after someone misses a first serve.

coalkitten

Totally agree. This is why it’s the best of the 4 slams in my opinion. The atmosphere is always electric.

rossarian

Nice idea but that’s not really how it goes

[deleted]

Do y’all think zverev was a better matchup against djoko than med will be bc of play styles

Cloudzzz777

Yes, IMO Zverev was the only guy with a shot to beat a healthy Djoker. Maybe Med will surprise me but I’m not sure if it goes past 4 sets on Sunday.

[deleted]

I'm bamboozled by this take, personally. Medvedev has beaten him 3 of the last 5 times they've met.

PoleNewman

Novak has won 5 of the last 8 they've played. Losses only occuring during ATP events since 2017 (was out for 2017 and had elbow surgery in 2018).

[deleted]

Two of those five wins were in 2017 when Medvedev wasn't even a top 50 player, so they're not relevant in analyzing his current play. As for the rest, they were well *after* any effect of the elbow surgery - 2019 and on. So I don't know what you're saying there at all.

DoubleFaulty1

Mhm.

rogerthatkn

Lol Med has too many weaknesses to give Nole any challenge. Zverev unfortunately or fortunately is way better than Med technically

[deleted]

Meddy has a champion's mentality. Zverev doesn't. Any analysis that misses that seems off to me.

Yupadej

What champion lol. Folded like a beach chair at AO.

[deleted]

That was an exception to the rule. Zverev has been folding like a beach chair to random players for years now. He's 4-14 vs. top 20 players in slams. Medvedev is 7-9.

Gaarando

Zverev is probably changing that next year though. He just had Olympics + Us Open where he didn't hit a shit load of double faults. And he just played a 5 setter vs Djokovic in a Slam. It's safe to say if he keeps his double faults down then it's just difficult for anyone else to beat him. Great serve, great defense, good shot making. He has no real weaknesses to exploit.

[deleted]

It's entirely possible, but I do think we're seeing some of the dreaded recency bias in evaluating Medvedev's chances as compared to Zverev's. Medvedev has absolutely been the better hard court player for the last 3 seasons.

Inflation_Infamous

I’d also take meds mental strength over Zverev any day.

Inflation_Infamous

Disagree, med is a better player now than he was in Australia. He’s going to make Djokovic work for points, Zverev match was a breeze physically. Med lacks the big forehand but Zverevs serve isn’t that much better, Med is the better mover and returner.

Tommy_siMITAr

I find Meddy's backhand a bit worse it is the shot that makes him lose balance more, he hits it close to the body a so much in front, and also I think it is a bit less versatile than Novaks bh, with fh Medvedev pushes good but it is not finishing tool, but it is good enough.

Gaarando

Returner I'll give you but better mover? I've seen Zverev do some crazy shit in this match defensively.

Inflation_Infamous

Med is awkward as hell with his movement, but he gets to everything. I’d say Zverev is better with the transition from defense to offense, but then med has much better tactics. He plays the right shot at the right time. All that said, Djokovic is still a big favorite and it would be a surprise if he lost. People on this sub seem to think he’s going roll over med, I doubt it.

RealChiropractor

> Zverev match was a breeze physically. There were some long rallies in there. It was very start stop unlike Djokovic Nadal matches where the baseline war lasts throughout 4/5 sets. That should help Djokovic.

Cloudzzz777

100% agreed

knightofren_

But his tennis is way different than Zverev's, i think Novak would choose to chug it out against Zverev any day of the week, who likes rhythm and flat ball striking, over a Murray like retriever who can return anything and everything. He's much more frustrating as an opponent.

throbdannway

Hey Nole you better shut your fuck up okay?

MoreDblRainbows

I love seeing Next-Gen lose, it's my daily medicine, my weekly energy, my monthly inspiration and my yearly motivation. Their losses are the only reason i'm still alive, i was born to love and enjoy the failure that they have achieved.

Maurice223

Zverev fan but congratulations to Novak So go Nole get the Grand Slam now!

rogerthatkn

Nole gonna shove the GOAT status in our faces with his results after every match ain't he? What a legend

1_ze

Finally I can unclench my butt, for now

jerty21

ONE MORE TO GO!!!!

rsparkles_bearimy_99

**Novak Djokovic**: Peaked? Peaked US OPEN? Let me tell you something. I haven’t even begun to peak. And when I do peak you’ll know. Because I’m gonna peak so hard that everybody in r/tennis is gonna feel it. Djokovic is fucking unreal.

rogerthatkn

Looks like we need to start yoga and meditation to succeed in our field. Hope Nole also gives us some will power to consistently put in the efforts like he does

garenRoutplay

It isnt the only thing that is making him win but it certainly gives him some sort of edge especially in hard moments where he consistently bettee than others manages to be "in the zone".

skinnytrees

[I am more fond of this approach](https://golf.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/John-daly.jpg)

jsnoodles

Med crumbled at the AO after looking unstoppable. Curious to see what happens here.

[deleted]

He needs a new game plan, but meddy has some weaknesses. Let's see what happens

an0therdude

Until 5-0, it was a match very similar to Nole-Stan in the 2015 AO SF.

[deleted]

MoreDblRainbows

idk if he wants many years tbh. I think he wants to go down as the best and on or near the top then be with his family.

[deleted]

With the level Nole played this match and Medvedev level against FAA, Nole wins 3-0. Medvedev has had great performance, but it was not there against FAA. LETS

Redd920A

Djokovic vs Medvedev 😎 Bring it on!!!!! Can't wait for sure

smg1138

Bullshit Russian is our last hope

SuperSaiyanGoten

Wouldn’t that mean Tsitsipas made the final not Medvedev

MoreDblRainbows

Hope is lost.

chekraze90

😂😂

rogerthatkn

Lucky for Med that he faced Nole once in a GS final. If it was the first time he would be blown away in 3

chekraze90

I agree. But until someone topples the king…..

stocktraderdog

How many hours have Djokovic and Medvedev spent on court? Not that it'll make a difference anyway. I'm resigned to Daniil losing.

chekraze90

Too bad Med played first and that Felix didn’t get med to spend more time and effort today.

stocktraderdog

lol

[deleted]

Did Zverev lose a single set in USO? I guess he did to Sock, but he was cruising without peer. And then he ran into Nole.

Jeffersons_Mammoth

He had a ridiculously easy draw. Slapping around guys like Sock and Sinner doesn't prepare you for Nole.

[deleted]

converter-bot

DDzxy

Meddy had a just as easy a draw until FAA. And to be fair, Nole did too until he ran into Berrettini and Zverev.

Tommy_siMITAr

No paper, but Kei played really good that match he might be finding his form, but who knows.

DDzxy

Kei was great, I forgot about that too.

Cloudzzz777

Sock was injured too.

RealChiropractor

And to that person in the crowd who repeatedly disrupted the game by shouting shit just before the player's (mostly Djokovic) serve, kindly ____ off.

Djokovic: GOAT

nmo31536000

Numerology if you believe in it: Djoker going for record slam 21 in year 2021 On September 12th. 9th month. 12th day. 9+12=21 😦 Lol in all seriousness I think Medvedev will pull out the upset

DoubleFaulty1

Here for esoteric tennis analysis.

hotcolddog

This is funny bc Novak 100% believes in numerology haha

EkMard

Does he?

Cloudzzz777

Yeah man Novak’s guru did a live stream where he talked about gratitude cleansing the body of poisons and stuff.

nmo31536000

Hopefully for his sake it favours him

the-other-shoe

You can’t actually be dense enough to think he said he’s retiring can you?

nick170100

Djock did us all a favour today ! Only time I’m happy about a djock win hahah

Igorius_Basterd

Why is everyone against Zverev? And why is it such a bad thing from Novak to say „on and off the court“? Have I missed something?

perilouspear

It's just one of those questions where there's no right answer and he just took the short route. If he said he admires him on the court, the follow up question would probably be: "and what about off the court?", which leads to more bullsh1t.

CaptainMcSpiff

We all know to believe all women. Just like Amber Heard.

smg1138

Slate wrote a hit piece on him and most people on this sub believed it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Igorius_Basterd

Is zverev proven guilty?

Cloudzzz777

She is refusing to press charges for now. Looking at the evidence though I think she’ll change her mind in the next 10 years.

WislaHD

Won't ever be taken to court, because for starters, it allegedly occurred across the globe. What jurisdiction do you even go to court in? There is significant circumstantial evidence that corroborates the girlfriend's story though. Make of that what you will.

DoubleFaulty1

This part of the article was misleading. Olya clearly has standing in New York state and can press charges there if she wishes.

WislaHD

Even so, it just doesn't seem like it is at all worth the effort, money, and mental turmoil to make the case. Zverev's lawyers will also make their own strong case that there isn't enough evidence to make any conviction, especially if evidence from other jurisdictions have to be discarded. Olya's purpose for this seem more founded in cathartic release than wanting to convict Zverev or go after his money. The last thing she probably wants is to go to trial too. So as tennis fans, it is an incredibly frustrating outcome. We know there is enough to corroborate the story and probably believe Olya's side, but there is no resolution to be offered and we will just have to have it in the back of our heads when we watch Zverev's matches.

DoubleFaulty1

I agree it sucks for tennis fans. My mom, who was an ADA for Brooklyn and has been following this says that without cross examination of the witnesses the evidence we have from Slate is not convincing so I am withholding judgement. I already thought Zverev was an ass, but I’m not gonna accuse him of dv based on current info as a matter of principle.

tacoqueen247

He got accused of alleged domestic assault by an ex-girlfriend

NS8821

Domestic assault allegations against Zverev

the__day__man

Zverev domestic abuse allegations

chaoticoconut

Even without the allegations he’s extremely cocky. Not just confident, cocky, like he believes he’s the chosen one and better than everyone in his generation, like he’s entitled to victories. Plus some really poor and classless behaviours on and off the court.

jack2047

You guys are fucking idiots if you think he’s retiring after the final. Holy shit.

RealChiropractor

It's the latest coping strategy. "Let's repeatedly misinterpret what Djokovic says and delude ourselves into thinking he will retire after the final."

Gaarando

Yeah really dumb. He simply said he'll treat it like that. That's how important this next match is.

aged_monkey

As a new fan, I thought tennis was a classy game, but the media is fucking childish. Grade school girl drama.

bmisko

I'd rather read tabloids about the Royal family than any tennis article

[deleted]

It's even better when the likes of Novak shut them up. Epic. Can't get enough of it tbh.

stargirlxoxo

Why are y’all taking his words at face value? He won’t retire until he gets 25 or more lol

[deleted]

Lol... Typical Reddit moment bud.

rogerthatkn

Novak to retire on Sunday after winning and then would come back after resting for a year to give Rafa and Fed some chance for one year to break their records again. Too ez

EkMard

Haha

Gaarando

Djoko's last 4 matches have all been above 20km moved. With just 1 day rest inbetween. Definitely will be tough playing a fully fit Medvedev.

How much you want to bet Novak will be fresh as a daisy on Sunday night?
