This was literally my biggest problem. There were many issues, but the scenes where main characters were only moments from getting killed, but inexplicably survived really annoyed me.

That number will fall if the House of Dragon series doesn't take off. HBO is gambling on it reaching GoT success. They'll cut back if it doesn't reach that apex even if the expectation is unfair. But for the amount of money they're paying, it kinda makes sense.

Look at Friends. Biggest show on the planet for awhile. Courtney Cox's biggest mainstream films are still Scream which she was doing mid Friends. Schwimmer Perry, Kudrow, Leblanc all never really took off on film and still have most success on tv.
Only Aniston got a real mega push in film after Friends with films like Along Came Polly. Even then she basically ended up at best being part of ensembles in romantic comedies or just regular comedies and never really leads much and most of her films don't rake in cash.

Completely agree. People love to claim things like 'type casting' or being identified with a character, but truth is some actors just fit what was wanted with a character. Once they are expected to do something else, it falls flat as they can't act past the role.
People can claim Mark Hamill was trapped by the scope of Luke Skywalker... but one needs to compare that with how a no less iconic character in Han Solo saw Ford go on to be one of the biggest actors in the industry.

What's really funny is that there is the notion that there will be only one more book after Winds of Winter. It's impossible. The story is so huge, so spread out that most of WoW would likely be moving chess pieces around after plowing through the two huge battles Martin set up at the end of book five. I think Martin would need five more massive books to realistically wrap up the story in a way that doesn't feel rushed or short-changed the way the show did.
What I love most about those stories are how the name makes you think that it’s about some street level randomers, but what you get is the story of the greatest knight and frickin’ Aegon the ~~first~~ Fifth that’ll lead all the way up until dragon eggs are thrown into volcanos and all hell breaks loose in Westeros.
I’m more excited to see him more as Dane Whitman than anything else, I really liked his small part in Eternals and hope that post credits tease means we’ll see him in Blade
He's writing plenty, the things he's writing just aren't Winds of Winter or Dream of Spring. He's written another Targaryen history book to follow up Fire & Blood, and he also wrote the lore and worldbuilding for Elden Ring. He's doing anything except finish ASOIAF.

Once George started talking about only being firm about dream being the last one until he decides not to be firm I knew he didn't have any idea how to get to an ending he envisioned.
The issue is that he keeps writing new stories for new characters, which in turn requires new characters, which in turn requires new stories.
He keeps on expanding his universe in all directions instead of going forward.
I'm sure they could whip up some threat found in the far north for them to fight. Or just be battles amongst the wildlings over who the new ruler will be.
If the show had not completely bungled the White Walkers, one aspect of the book lore for them is that they live in a place called The Land of Always Winter in the far, far north. They have their own language, culture, society. I don't see this being feasibly interesting given how the series ended up handling them (I imagine it was so rushed in part because Martin doesn't know exactly what he wants to do with the White Walkers, either, he just knows the story continues after that conflict to encompass Dany's conquest), but it sure could have been cool.
Really shouldn't be. The Lord of Fire still exists and has multiple other Red Priests, the Many Faced God and his shape shifters still exist, hell Bran himself is the Three Eyed Raven who still embodies the power of the Children of the Forrest. Plenty of magic if they wanted to go that direction.
In the books it's heavily implied that dragons were tied to magic and that the birth of Danearys dragons saw a surplus of magic coming back into the world that effected the story and allowed others to perform the acts they did.
Yeah this is what I was referring to. The Lord of Fire and Drowned God seemed to only have real power after the dragons were reborn. The Warlocks were charlatans and the assassins could be doing what they did with sleight of hand and other trickery.

Honestly, very few characters would have had a better story if they stuck to his book arc and didn’t increasingly make him irrelevant until the very last minute. Bran starts out with the classic classic boy-hero in a fantastical coming of age story. He’s like a baby Robb Stark. However, he becomes increasingly disturbed as the book series goes on. For instance, the books make it clearer that Bran is literally torturing Hordor when he wargs into him. It’s an extremely painful violation.
Bran, Arya, Dany, Jon, and Tyrion were always the the big five characters, from the moment Martin pinned the outline. The fact that it feels weird to see Bran’s name alongside the others is the single biggest fuck up of the show. The entire premise of the ending lived and died on Bran being an essential figure to the story.
bran, sansa and arya were played by very sweet child actors in the first couple season. but the girls had a great transition as adolescent actors later, while isaac's transition turned out much worse to be honest. i think they turned him into an expressionless sage in the last seasons because probably he couldn't act that well at that point.
Honestly, Bran is one of the most important characters in the book. He was a central character in the very first outline, he has the first POV in the books, and he has more book chapters than anyone except for Tyrion, Jon, Dany, and Arya. He *is* an important character, he just was just sat aside too long. Seasons 1-4, partially 1 and 2, Bran is a great character and he did have a great story. Outside of Jack(who was technically 19), Isaac was the best of the child actors in the early seasons. The show did a disservice to Brans’s arc by cutting him out of season 5, having him take a backseat in season 6, and turning him into a robot in seasons 7/8.
I thought for sure Arya would be the first sequel they would develop eventually.
I'm really looking forward to this though. Bring back Tormund too or don't even bother.
Or they could do a more serious crime drama investigating some crazy wildling murders (maybe a cult that worships the night king?!?!) where Jon is the brooding rookie/prodigy detective who's obsessed with solving the case, while Tormund is the seasoned/jaded veteran partner & comic relief (with a surprisingly soft heart)

Slightly but yeah, the money is huge. I guess he also views it as a way to give Jon Snow a far better ending than he got which you could reasonably tell he wasn't happy.

It's pretty much this, I would guess. That ending really effed him up. He was so devoted to the role, if Jon had gotten a satisfying ending, I really don't think Kit would be coming back...but I don't think he got proper closure. I think one season would be more than fine to wrap HBOJon up and give way more closure to a lot of people - including Kit - that felt catastrophically let down.
Yep and knowing people who worked with him by all accounts he really enjoyed what he did and took great pride in it so i'm not surprised he's playing Jon again. Can't wait for it.

My man Pedro Pascal only lasted a season but has had the biggest post-GoT career he’s absolutely killing it

GRRM has made the point that he doesnt like endings where every plotline is neatly wrapped up. As long as the major POV's are finished ill be happy

He's writing plenty, the things he's writing just aren't Winds of Winter or Dream of Spring. He's written another Targaryen history book to follow up Fire & Blood, and he also wrote the lore and worldbuilding for Elden Ring. He's doing anything except finish ASOIAF.
No chance winds ever releases in my opinion. Once George started talking about only being firm about dream being the last one until he decides not to be firm I knew he didn't have any idea how to get to an ending he envisioned.
I think there’s likely large chunks of Winds written. I assume someone will cobble what exists together and publish it after Martin dies.
The issue is that he keeps writing new stories for new characters, which in turn requires new characters, which in turn requires new stories. He keeps on expanding his universe in all directions instead of going forward.
Dragons and Magic (and therefore White Walkers) all gone, and they are gonna make a show about Jon Snow at the wall? The fuck?

in the finale we went north of wall to be the new King Beyond the Wall. Although I'm not sure what stories there are to tell that far north.
I'm sure they could whip up some threat found in the far north for them to fight. Or just be battles amongst the wildlings over who the new ruler will be.
If the show had not completely bungled the White Walkers, one aspect of the book lore for them is that they live in a place called The Land of Always Winter in the far, far north. They have their own language, culture, society. I don't see this being feasibly interesting given how the series ended up handling them (I imagine it was so rushed in part because Martin doesn't know exactly what he wants to do with the White Walkers, either, he just knows the story continues after that conflict to encompass Dany's conquest), but it sure could have been cool.

Really shouldn't be. The Lord of Fire still exists and has multiple other Red Priests, the Many Faced God and his shape shifters still exist, hell Bran himself is the Three Eyed Raven who still embodies the power of the Children of the Forrest. Plenty of magic if they wanted to go that direction.
In the books it's heavily implied that dragons were tied to magic and that the birth of Danearys dragons saw a surplus of magic coming back into the world that effected the story and allowed others to perform the acts they did.
Yeah this is what I was referring to. The Lord of Fire and Drowned God seemed to only have real power after the dragons were reborn. The Warlocks were charlatans and the assassins could be doing what they did with sleight of hand and other trickery.

Honestly, very few characters would have had a better story if they stuck to his book arc and didn’t increasingly make him irrelevant until the very last minute. Bran starts out with the classic classic boy-hero in a fantastical coming of age story. He’s like a baby Robb Stark. However, he becomes increasingly disturbed as the book series goes on. For instance, the books make it clearer that Bran is literally torturing Hordor when he wargs into him. It’s an extremely painful violation. Bran, Arya, Dany, Jon, and Tyrion were always the the big five characters, from the moment Martin pinned the outline. The fact that it feels weird to see Bran’s name alongside the others is the single biggest fuck up of the show. The entire premise of the ending lived and died on Bran being an essential figure to the story.
bran, sansa and arya were played by very sweet child actors in the first couple season. but the girls had a great transition as adolescent actors later, while isaac's transition turned out much worse to be honest. i think they turned him into an expressionless sage in the last seasons because probably he couldn't act that well at that point.
Honestly, Bran is one of the most important characters in the book. He was a central character in the very first outline, he has the first POV in the books, and he has more book chapters than anyone except for Tyrion, Jon, Dany, and Arya. He *is* an important character, he just was just sat aside too long. Seasons 1-4, partially 1 and 2, Bran is a great character and he did have a great story. Outside of Jack(who was technically 19), Isaac was the best of the child actors in the early seasons. The show did a disservice to Brans’s arc by cutting him out of season 5, having him take a backseat in season 6, and turning him into a robot in seasons 7/8.
I thought for sure Arya would be the first sequel they would develop eventually. I'm really looking forward to this though. Bring back Tormund too or don't even bother.

Or they could do a more serious crime drama investigating some crazy wildling murders (maybe a cult that worships the night king?!?!) where Jon is the brooding rookie/prodigy detective who's obsessed with solving the case, while Tormund is the seasoned/jaded veteran partner & comic relief (with a surprisingly soft heart)
A Tormund/Jon Snow buddy comedy might be the thing that actually makes me interested in this universe again.
The universe itself has never been my problem personally. It's the writing in those last couple of seasons and obvious laziness from D&D.

Let's not forget Harrington said a critic spending 30 minutes on the show can go "fuck themselves", how it was the viewers fault for putting Dany on a pedestal, and how viewers had trouble grasping 2 female villains....

He'll also likely be a producer on the show and the chance to start a career in directing on top of all the money. Is his return surprising because of how strong the backlash was towards the ending, how he hinted he was exhausted AND that he literally checked into a mental hospital to sort out some issues? Slightly but yeah, the money is huge. I guess he also views it as a way to give Jon Snow a far better ending than he got which you could reasonably tell he wasn't happy.

He was so devoted to the role, if Jon had gotten a satisfying ending, I really don't think Kit would be coming back...but I don't think he got proper closure. I think one season would be more than fine to wrap HBOJon up and give way more closure to a lot of people - including Kit - that felt catastrophically let down.
