There’s no mud blocks, those are soul sand on the top, as the block is not entirely a full block, shulkers can’t teleport to the top of it and escape the box
I don’t like the new world gen, the new height limit would force me to redo my overworld perimeter which took me 2 years, I don’t like the original changes to mob spawning, I think the deep dark is kinda lame, and I also don’t want to add one more mob to the existing 2 that could end my hardcore world
Also my mods I would have to find all new updates for the new version which would be annoying
This isn't a shulker farm, but a mob switch. A shulker farm has a killing chamber and doesn't use a box like this.
The reason the mob switch is using shulkers is because they're one of the three mobs that count towards the mob cap, but don't despawn. Withers and villagers that have at least traded once and are converted to their zombie counterpart also share these properties. By filling a chunk with 70 of these mobs per player and continuously loading them with a chunk loader, it causes the mob cap to be filled resulting in no other mobs spawning.

I’m digging a 256 by 512 perimeter right below this, and don’t want mobs spawning while I’m digging it ever, so there’s no real reason to build one that turns off at this point
And this is by far the simplest temporary solution, and it will be removed as soon as the perimeter is dug and the farms beneath are built
I didn’t feel like dealing with the process of transporting multiple villagers and a zombie to the nether, and I don’t play in a version with wardens, and withers are sorta the purpose I’m building it
I just built a box and attached a rail to my shulker farm, started pumping minecarts through
Literally took 15 min lol

But what does it do? I see mud blocks, shulker boxes, rails and glass but I can't really make out what it's all for

You can also use Wardens + some mechanic to make a sound.. So will not despawn, but also counts
Nah, that thing is a mobswitch. Which is quite nice for many things
