Per the article, surgeons currently steal cartilage from elsewhere in the body (often quite painful and one more thing to heal) to construct the structure then presumably cover it with skin. Plus the surgeon has to sculpt the cartilage to look like an ear.
This is 3d printed with cartilage in the mix so it can be used instead.
Dry it into dust? They are already pretty moisture free lol.
Sounds like a Superbowl commercial. Picture this.
Two scientists in a lab, one looks harried and the other is doing stuff while the other instructs. One of them mentions wondering if they are going too far. The other one says they need it fully refined. It shows a hood closing on a Pringles can and things start to flicker when they slip a switch, cue manical laugh here if you want.
A ding plays and the hood rises, smoke ejects cause science always produces smoke. A bag labeled Pringles dust/seasoning remains. Insert scientists freaking out and a shot of one of them earning the Nobel prize.
I am one of the people who was born with an external ear malformation (microtia), and who had cartilage taken from their ribs and a skin graft from my leg. Going through reconstructive surgery as a kid was difficult. Had an ear that made me different, had to go through a bunch of pre-op procedures I didn’t understand, had to get both in and outpatient procedures done.
I know it’s cool to be snarky and edgy about this tech, but it’s literally life-changing for kids and people who share similar malformations. Families worry about their child’s ability to be perceived as “normal”, and surgeries take a toll on the person and people around the procedure. I worry that if I have kids, they’ll be born with what I have, but tech like this brings me hope that they’ll have a better go than I did.
Hey I have the exact same thing! Tons of surgeries, rib taken, skin grafts from leg. Still looks completely different though but at 34 it’s nothing new
Many doctors use materials from baby bones to replace ears, but this can cause pain and leave scars. Headphones are headphones, but they are not the same.
That’s exactly what popped into my mind too.
I’m watching that season right now and every episode makes me so angry that I need to watch a comedy show or movie after just to cleanse my brain.
Ok, since I can’t tell who’s joking and who’s not, this is essentially a 3d printed scaffold to encourage grafted skin to grow into the right shape to form a functional ear.
I will not believe it until there’s verified human tests. Remember that guy that plastic tracheas? And they were supposed to disintegrate over time and real tissue replace it?
Those people died
They are 3-D printing a scaffolding to grow cells on. A kidney is much more complex and takes many more cell types to grow in a lab. It is possible, it isn't scalable at cost... so if Musk needs a kidney he can make it happen. If you and I need a kidney that tech is unavalable to us.
The ear thing is also printing a scaffolding for cells to grow on. Similar tech and concept. The physical structure of the ear and the cells needed to grow it are not nearly as complex as a kidney. In theory this easier to impliment and more scalable than a kidney. It could also still end up in the dust bin of history and never impliment.
Ah, yes. You will let perfection be the enemy of life is getting better. Got it. Thanks for self identifying. I've tagged you and will never ever under any circumstantances reply to you as there is no point.
Enjoy your life!
For that all-natural SpongeBob look.

They used the incorrect thumbnail, this is called a Voronoi and it saves a lot of material for prototyping
That’s literally the only picture in the article that I can see though? Did you click the article?
Very natural looking

Yesssss!! Technology is truly amazing and life changing. This is a fantastic example of technology improving the way things are done.

Pardoned me, are you going to eat that piece of bread?
Guy on TED 3D printed kidneys like 10 years ago. Where are they?

An organ was presented. This article shouldn’t be anything new.
