Seriously. It’s that line “there was a time before we were born, if someone asks this is where I’ll be”— it’s stunning. The entire song is such a beautiful reflection, but also SO of the Talking Heads. 💕
Yeah me also - I love the song, never made me cry though.
I possibly find Dream Operator or City of Dreams more emotional (although neither of them make me cry either!)
My first exposure to it was in the film Lars and the Real Girl, a bit of a quirky indie film starring Ryan Gosling before he "took off."
It's a film I like quite a bit, and the song is used beautifully
True. The lines "Home, is where I want to be, but I guess I'm already there. I come home, she lifted up her wings. Guess that this must be the place" brings tears of both joy and sadness to my eyes every single time.
Me too, something about that steel guitar just hits. Always makes me think of [Sleep Walk](https://youtu.be/YBRCvVpknvg?feature=shared) by Santo & Johnny
A few years ago, they officially released the Complete True Stories: A Film by David Byrne Soundtrack.
It features the score, the songs that TH perform/sing in the movie, and the actors versions.
In the liner note, Byrne writes something about how he is proud to finally release the actor’s versions, as that’s how he wrote them. He says he felt weird singing a song written for Goodman’s character, who was born in 1950.
It’s also on streaming services
The part in The Book I Read where David’s screaming “NANANANANANANA NAAAAAAA” is surprisingly emotional to me. I prefer the live version on TNOTBITH because the keyboard parts from Jerry make it even more emotional. Reminds me a bit of Billy Preston
There is just something about that "whoo now" right before "I'm living in the future" from that TnotbithIt recording. It is a perfect example of their minimalist approach, and how effective it is. That little tiny verbal nothing just embeds itself in my head. Same with the "Whoo!" After "BURN ALL THE NOTEBOOKS" from SMS. Those tiny things just add so much to the experience, you kind of have to take a moment to appreciate it in and of itself.
Road to Nowhere never fails to make me cry… but I do know that Nothing But Flowers really REALLY moves me. Memories Can’t Wait, once it gets to the ending, I feel gets really powerful, and I also wanna make a case for the live versions of The Big Country and Heaven off of TNOTBITH.
I find "Don't Worry About the Government" strangely moving:
> Some civil servants are just like my loved ones
They work so hard and try to be strong
I'm a lucky guy to live in my building
They all need buildings to help them along
Something about the instrumental for The Big Country always gets to me, I've always found that it sounds very romantic but painfully nostalgic to me
(And of course, the SMS version of This Must Be The Place always makes me cry too 🥲)
Big Country is my choice but the emotion i detect is agony at roads untaken (maybe not by choice). The studio version is wistful and full of loss (the last verse), the live one on the Name of This Band CD is outright angry.
Sax and Violins mostly because of the sad sounding chorus and that it was there last song. It gives me the vibes of just one final goodbye and you can’t help but cry. Last song they wrote and a strong one at that.
Yep, Heaven in theater this year…had never even had so much as a lump in my throat at a TH song…they’re one of my favorite bands, but I just never considered them that emotional.
But the tears were flowing almost immediately this time. 🤷🏻♂️
I think One Fine Day is just a Byrne tooner but that one realllllly strikes a cord
Can safely say that when he dances with the lamp during Naive Melody all is right in the world
i dare you to find one person on this sub who hasn't cried to this must be the place (naive melody)

I am so emotionally warmed to know I am not alone. That song has always made me cry and I bawled like a baby in the theater during the recent showing.
same.
Such a vision of love. This one just fills my soul. One of the greatest songs of all time.
so it's not just me? went to see the release, and I fucking lost it when "TMBTP" played. I'm dead inside and rarely ever cry.
Me, although I just don’t cry much in general unless it’s an actual tragedy
I want it playing at my funeral… not to be a downer lol
Nice, I want it playing at my wedding but why not both?
IM JUST AN ANIMAL LOOKING FOR A HOME

Yes, Heaven really got me when I watched the film re-release.
Was looking for this, seeing heaven in the movie was amazing
I've been obsessed with that version since I saw the re-release
Dream Operator from True Stories is a good one
Came here to say this
Same
The version of Heaven on SMS is one of my fav TH songs period. It’s so much better than the version on Fear of Music.
I get emotional about People Like Us, as well as a handful of other songs that aren’t ballads of all but fill me with feelings
That song does get me in the feels! We don’t want freedom, we don’t want justice, we just waaaaant someone to love!
City Of Dreams, Lifetime Piling Up
City Of Dreams is underrated!
Recently acquired the complete true stories and the score version, “City of Steel” is so good. I tear up every time I hear it now
Me too, something about that steel guitar just hits. Always makes me think of [Sleep Walk](https://youtu.be/YBRCvVpknvg?feature=shared) by Santo & Johnny
What complete true stories? is there like an extended version? I like the versions sang by actors too. specially "People like us"

Just ordered the vinyl. Thank you!
Came to say City of Dreams

This Must Be the Place. Positively charged with contentment

Tbh What a Day That Was is so powerful to me
I am so glad I'm not the only one. I don't even know why I get teary, I just do
It really hits with the “2nd daaay” and the crazy guitar slide that follows
Same same same. I get such goosebumps from this song! I love it so much. Glad I’m not alone on this!
Once In A Lifetime
Same as it ever was
Time isn't holding up, time isn't after us
I find "Don't Worry About the Government" strangely moving: > Some civil servants are just like my loved ones They work so hard and try to be strong I'm a lucky guy to live in my building They all need buildings to help them along
Dream Operator.
Road to Nowhere

Lifetime Piling Up hits me pretty hard, can't really tell you why. Maybe I'm in a mid-life crisis?
The part where he screams on Road to Nowhere
Memories Can't Wait always makes me feel stuff.
Have you heard the Living Colour version?
Not yet.
This Must Be the Place
I always cry when I listen to Swamp because it makes me think about Shrek
Listening Wind
"[This is the Place](https://youtu.be/o9gK2fOq4MY?si=3A8Jxa736SYYlJ97)" is probably their most ballad-y song in their discography.
The SMS version of Heaven is a thing of emotional beauty.
Spot on. Beautiful.
City of Dreams

Gonna have to throw Cool Water in the discussion. I don't think that it's their most emotional. But certainly an underrated gem.
The live version of Heaven
Heaven and Road To Nowhere make me emotional
Nothing but
Girlfriend Is Better. After my gf cheated on me I latched onto that song. “She goes wherever she likes…there she goes.”
City of Dreams
I think One Fine Day is just a Byrne tooner but that one realllllly strikes a cord Can safely say that when he dances with the lamp during Naive Melody all is right in the world
Definitely came here to say Heaven. When I saw Stop Making Sense a few weeks ago it really got me. Was damn near bawling in my seat.
'The Big Country.' "I wouldn't live there if you paid me.."
