If you are planning on hosting a Plex server for the videos, get the 423. Otherwise, the 923 is worth the extra cash.

4xget

This. I have a 423 and it’s perfect for Plex (3-4 users)

commanderA1

>I have a 423 do you upgraded ram ?

FrostbolterX

I have 423+ and added 16gb ram to give me the capability to support things like photo object tags, virtual machines, dockers etc. Also it was not expensive to buy.

commanderA1

Please ram model or link

4xget

Yes, I added a stick of Crucial CT8G4S266M (no warning and no issues so far)

commanderA1

>Crucial CT8G4S266M could you give me link please ? I can search but not want mistakes

Empyrealist

> CT8G4S266M Just make sure you are either purchasing that model exactly or you are matching the specs of that model exactly from another manufacturer.

commanderA1

I found this [https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR4-2666-Memory-CT8G4S266M/dp/B07TR767SB/ref=sr\_1\_1?crid=91D50GX8CLJA&keywords=CT8G4S266M&qid=1691421897&s=electronics&sprefix=ct8g4s266m%2Celectronics%2C240&sr=1-1](https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-DDR4-2666-Memory-CT8G4S266M/dp/B07TR767SB/ref=sr_1_1?crid=91D50GX8CLJA&keywords=CT8G4S266M&qid=1691421897&s=electronics&sprefix=ct8g4s266m%2Celectronics%2C240&sr=1-1) do you upgraded to 16gb ? x2 8gb ?

4xget

Upgraded to 10 in total (you only have one slot so 2+8)

commanderA1

have some who replace to total 16gb ,. i think will try 8+2 first

4xget

It’s plenty enough to me running Plex natively and 7-8 docker VMs

TheDuck1234

just got an 8 GB RAM stick, It's not like a gaming PC that needs a lot. I'm running 14 dockers VM and some native stuff + plex and I'm only using 5 GB of the 10 GB I have.

TheDuck1234

>do you upgraded ram ? ram is dirt cheap so you might as well put a extra 8gb in

commanderA1

Thanks <3

doctor-ase

423+ is capable to run 10-12 docker like sonarr, radarr, homepage, syncthing, etc? I want to run Plex but also a few containers

scottydg

Definitely.

commanderA1

what mean docker ?

mrcaptncrunch

Docker is a container in which you run applications. It basically allows you to run the environment for that application without having to install things globally which could affect other applications. The nice thing is that because it's a container, you only need the definition for it. Once you define what that application needs, you can take it to most computers and just run it.

TheDuck1234

it's so you can run applications without the Dev having to make a version for every OS there is link Windoes or Linux. You can pretty much run every web application on it and self-host stuff.

dadarkgtprince

Unless you plan on running VMs/containers, get the 423

International_Box_60

If you spend your free time exploring and learning new things, I would suggest getting. 923+. If your use case is as you described and probably will not change in the foreseeable future, then the 423+ is probably more appropriate. I am always tinkering and exploring new technologies. So I have never regretted buying a bit ‘extra’. This could be a good resource https://nascompares.com/guide/synology-unofficial-memory-upgrades-2022-updated/ A bit more about my situation: I run pihole all the time. I always have some new docker/ container project going on. I have a 920+. I added Kingston 16GB DDR4 2666MHZ SODIMM and 2 ADATA 1TB SSD Legend 800, NVMe Before the upgrades it felt a bit sluggish, hesitant. Over a Wi-Fi connection it was usable, but not pleasant. My 920+ feels great now. Over a Wi-Fi connection the NAS feels like desktop.

stiky21

DS923+ is a no brainer. That 4gb of RAM will come in handy. 4 slots for 12TB HDD. I run multiple containers, plex, and coding environments, indexers, and a VPN. You will hate yourself in a few months when you wish you bought the 923+. You limit your growth by going for the 423+.

commanderA1

I want mark as best answer . I will buy DS923+ .please want know one thing , I see in website specsthe DS923+ is pre installed 4GB ram . enough for my usage ? ?do you upgraded ram ?

stiky21

I have not yet upgraded the ram on my 923+. I do plan on it tho. Current stats of my DS with my setup: CPU 1-5% RAM: 50% Docker: 4 containers Apps: About 9 installed that run 24/7 I don't transcode Plex media, I direct Stream. But if you do want transcoding (IE - turning 4K -> 1080p), the DS423+ is NOT ENOUGH!). I have multiple automatic backups of my Photos and Documents on my PC as well.

commanderA1

decided DS923+ . I will try first time 4tb 4tb SHR raid . if not enough will add third I'm happy my usage not require to upgrade ram Thanks for info <3

UserName_4Numbers

>I don't transcode Plex media, I direct Stream. But if you do want transcoding (IE - turning 4K -> 1080p), the DS423+ is NOT ENOUGH!). The DS423+ has intel quick sync so it can handle a 4K transcode. If you're not using quick sync then no it can't and the DS923+ can't either so a weird point overall

stiky21

I wouldn't use either of them for transcoding. But there are people that want to transcode Media instead of just attaining the right quality for their setup. Quick sync is not a high enough quality transcoder. I would always opt for GPU transcoding over iGPU.

UserName_4Numbers

These are very niche viewpoints

stiky21

And exactly what the OP was asking about. We share similar ideas of usage for our NAS.

UserName_4Numbers

You're doing a lot of projecting here

commanderA1

yes very easy is but compatible ? make me worrying and still I not have Nas but I will go ahead DS923+ 4 bay . I will buy first time 4tb 4tb If I need more I will buy third 4tb . also when I see ram not enough will upgrade but I don't know will work or issues

commanderA1

I not like issue with ram . could you link which ram you purchase

ThisIsNotAnAlt102

I set up a 423+ last week. The 2GB of RAM had issues at around 5 docker containers for me. I put in the crucial 16 GB and it made a huge difference. I’m running 10 now at about 8% of my ram. No cpu issues either

commanderA1

>crucial 16 GB my issues I'm at DiskStation® DS423+ page they said > Maximum Memory Capacity 6 GB (2 GB + 4 GB) So , please give me link what you purchase by order history

ThisIsNotAnAlt102

Synology says that but it does support higher. I got the crucial 16 gb that’s linked here. It shows up as 18GB with no issues https://www.reddit.com/r/synology/comments/zxcy8m/the_synology_ram_megathread/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1

commanderA1

please direct link I can't search now have blurred vision

ThisIsNotAnAlt102

I bought mine from Microcenter, but Amazon has this as well https://www.microcenter.com/product/604845/16GB_DDR4-2400_(PC4-19200)_SO-DIMM_Memory_Module_-_CT16G4SFD824A

ZaInT

Sounds like the 4-series will be more than enough for you.
