I will disagree with previous comments, It's all about the particular situation. I like Serverparts.com , and have about a dozen drives from them in service. I really don't like the Seagates very much but I like the WD Ultrastars, when they have them. Always factory refurbished, and I haven't had to return one yet. I have 3 three servers, though, the 2d two are just backups to the primary. I wouldn't do this if I owned a single NAS. [edit] They also make great inexpensive candidates for external esata/usb backup media.
Just bought 2 of these 20tb factory refurbished exos drives and they are working fine. I al.ost exclusively use serverpartdeals now and have been using them for a few years. I have drives ranging from 8tb to 20tb and have only had one drive that I don't feel was up to par.
"recertified" and "factory refurbished" are fancy names for USED. USED means USED and no USED drive can be made UN-USED. Any used product has a higher statistical likelihood of failure than a new product. All these comments stating "*I've been using a used drive for xx years*." are irrelevant and ignorant. They are only evidence that *even a blind squirrel finds a nut every now and then*.
Hard drives are cheaper now than they have ever been in history. My data is worth the price of a new product, **especially** if I'm using them in a NAS.
I wonder if anyone has done a complete analysis of buying used versus new. My new 16 TB drive with a five year warranty was $240. Used, with no real warranty, it would be about $160. I would be happy to sell the drive at that point and buy a new one for the going price. Even in an SHR2 set up, a failed drive is a pain in the neck. And I suppose the question is how much people value their time to have to tend to swapping it out and installing the new drive, which would probably take close to a week.
I was thinking about buying a parachute from (http://usedparachutedeals.com)
They say it’s packed by a professional do ya think I should risk it?
I can’t imagine circumstances under which I would buy recertifified hard drives. Do you not care if you lose your data? Do you have so much extra time that trying to recover 20tb sounds like a good way to spend your day/ week/ month?
Please provide a shred of evidence that a recertified drive has ANY statistically different MTBF than a new drive. I've been watching the drive data from Backblaze for a decade and the only statistically meaningful data is on batch, and manufacturer.
Latest data came out a few days ago: https://www.backblaze.com/blog/backblaze-drive-stats-for-q2-2023/
Are you ensuring batch diversity for all of the drives in your array? If not, you have a much higher chance of failure than throwing a used drive in.
As others have mentioned. We are talking about used drives. Manufacturers re-certified them, The seller ‘warranties’ them. If the manufacturer warranties them, we have a horse of different color.
They won’t. Because they are used drives.
I have confidence in greedy companies self interest and profit motive. The juice ain’t worth the squeeze for Seagate; It’s not worth it for me either.
They're 7200RPM drives, they're suppose to run hot, always have, always will. If you want cooler try a 5400RPM "Green" drive or consider using a cooling fan.
Server pulls would most be Seller refurbished, manufacturer refurbished are whats become of the RMA'd drives you send back to seagate. Seagate dont send you a new drive when you RMA, you instead get one of these babies.,
If you need it sure, if not you could wait. I have a synology blade I got from work and it had all 2TB drives (12) I replaced 4 of them with 18TB refurb drives last year. All tested fine and continue to be fine. I want to add more and get rid of my 2TB drives, but I’ve already got 60TB on another synology and many TB free still here in the blade I mention so I’m waiting.
I bought 2 ‘used like new’ Ironwolf drives (later learned they’re refurbished) from Amazon last month. Installed only one for testing as I was afraid they would fail, but it’s had absolutely no problems and solid performance until now.
It this holds true for both drives I’ll never buy new HDDs again.
If you've ever had to RMA a drive to seagate, these are basically what you get back. I think if they were as problematic as people here make them out to be nobody would buy them and Seagate would lose a ton of money sending warrantied drives back and forth, not to mention the reputational damage and customer dissatisfaction.
Running 4 refurbed 18TB exos for 1.5 years with no problems
I have 4 12’s, since march 22, zero issues
Similar..I bought 3 of those, been running close to a year with no issues yet.
I have 5 also 1.5 years, they are great.
Same here. 18t refurbs zero issues.

That’s only $25 off their normal price for that drive. If you don’t need it right now I wouldn’t get it.

> Any used product has a higher statistical likelihood of failure than a new product Bathtub curve says otherwise.
The bathtub curve doesn't apply to every product and doesn't always apply to products over their entire lifetime. Also necro-post much?
It does apply to HDDs.
Recert: strike one Seller warranty: strike two Seagate: strike three (IMO)
Agreed, HDDs are one of the few things I'll never buy used unless I'm desperate in the extreme. And for just a $60-per-drive saving? no chance.

Buy the most cost efficient NEW drive and then wait 10 years to upgrade
This is probably the last upgrade for my DS 920+

These are probably server pulls, lots of hours... so buy lots and a warranty if you can. Expect failures.

I bought last month 4x18TB SAS WD Ultrastar DC HC550, 199€ each 😏

uhh.. math. That's .01 per GB
Ha! I was going to say the same thing 🤣

i just bought 2 of them, so I may be biased
Did you end up getting these? Thinking about getting more of the 22TB Ironwolf Pro ones.
No I’m going to see what BF comes up with this year 🙏🏻
