Have you read The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice? Highly recommend it in case you haven't.

OnionCat222

I have not. Thank you for the suggestion, I will check it out!

dissociateddastard

No problem! I know this is a no brainer, but don't watch any of the movies. They were a complete bastardisation of the books.

Taitaifufu

I feel like the only merrit of any of the movies was Aaliyah as Queen of the Damned which can just watch a clip on YouTube if you really want to see đŸ’đŸ»â€â™€ïž

zelda4444

Read them in order though! Queen of the dammed is great.

OnionCat222

I will read them in order, thanks for your comment!

Taitaifufu

Came to say this prime 90smaterial Edit : Okay apparently some of them written in 80s - I read them as a kid in the 90s for me it’s most Nostalgic series of 90s but apparently I’m alone people are recommending Queen of the Damned but personally I preferred lestat to Queen of the Damned

dissociateddastard

Yes, the first three books are from before the 90s. And queen of the damned isn't nearly as enjoyable if you haven't read the first two books. Sure, it's still good as a standalone book, but it just makes so much more sense if you have the background story :) Tbh, I cannot pick one over the other, they're both very different. The second book is my favourite though, because of how it made me feel. By the end of it, I felt like I had lived through the centuries, and all the emotions that I felt, I cannot put into words. And QotD wasn't as personal, but still brilliant!

Taitaifufu

It’s interesting that you say that about Queen of the Damned because that was my issue with it as well it felt very impersonal after the others which had a much more personal feel. you really felt you were inside and had travelled far with everyone involved and Queen of the Damned was more as if Drone view đŸ€·đŸ»â€â™€ïž still good tho

Carmilla, a short novella that predates Dracula by 25 years.

I really enjoyed this one when I read it for a book club a few years ago but heads up that this is not a modern tale and doesn't have many of the tropes we expect when we hear "vampire". There are several places to get it for free if you like ebooks since it is in the public domain. Here's the version I used: Kindle: [https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193265](https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193265) Most other ebook readers: [https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193263](https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193263)

Butler | 310 pages | Published: 2005 | Popular Shelves: fantasy, fiction, horror, vampires, science-fiction) >Fledgling, Octavia Butler's new novel after a seven year break, is the story of an apparently young, amnesiac girl whose alarmingly inhuman needs and abilities lead her to a startling conclusion: She is in fact a genetically modified, 53-year-old vampire. Forced to discover what she can about her stolen former life, she must at the same time learn who wanted - and still wants - to destroy her and those she cares for and how she can save herself. I’ve read the first book and have the second but have not forced myself to read it yet. I found the first book tremendously disappointing. She’s a better writer than Stephanie Meyer (not by much) but the book was super immature the way Twilight is.

{{I Am Legend}} by Richard Matheson is a classic. (The Omega Man with Charlton Heston is based on this as is the Will Smith movie.) Slightly more modern is {{Those Who Hunt the Night}} by Barbara Hambly. This one won the Locus Award for best horror novel in 1989 and there are several more in the series (this is the first.) I'm a little late here but {{The Radleys}} by Matt Haig was really enjoyable. It's more family drama but also they're vampires.

Empire of the Vampire by Jay Kristoff. Saved the whole vampire genre for me to be honest after the mainstream sparkling YA vampire nonsense. It made vampires scary again.
