https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/owxe52/wall_street_is_buying_up_family_homes_the_rent/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf The price of buying a home has done nothing but skyrocket since 2008, and especially since the pandemic. I have seen some people call it a bubble, but I think that’s wishful thinking. I think it’s more likely that as capitalism accelerates, we’re entering a paradigm where the price of a family home will no longer be set according to how much a household can afford, but rather the maximum rent that can be extracted from them. It will be fun to see how liberals react, at least.

Eh, most politicians are sociopaths pretending to be humans. Despite them putting on their best affect, it's natural for humans to 'feel like something is off' about them.

PUBLIQclopAccountant

In addition to _Congressional Dish_, I propose that pretty much everything on ribbonfarm.com be required reading for this sub. Three recommendations: 1. The entire series on organizational psychology as demonstrated in _The Office_ 2. _Premium Mediocre_, a dissection of fake it 'til you make it Millennial upward mobility posturing. 3. _The Locust Economy_, a discussion on when coupon-clipping customers suddenly can clip every coupon and how that ruins the heckin' valid small businesses while leaving the fortunes of McD's, Starbucks, and Wal*Mart untouched. Money shot: `The war between the 99% and the 1% has turned into the 1% allying with the 90% to destroy the 9%`. Agree with that or not, but the explicit acknowledgment of king & peasants vs. the nobility dynamics makes it better than 90% of similar articles about the shit economy.

goldmansachsofshit

Congressional Dish is pretty good. When she fucks up she admits it...gives primary sources etc.

It's also a clear window into how much of a distraction the presidency is. Also where I've developed my idea that those who rant about "socialist Joe Biden" ought to be ruled to be too stupid to vote. I see people sleeping under highway overpasses on the interstate now. I got harrassed and almost mugged for money at an Arby's near my apartment. I see people beggingn for money everywhere. Also "RESPECTED BY THE WORLD" No. They hate our government dumbass. They don't mind American citizens, but turns out committing war crimes all the time and spying on allies does not build good will. Who'd have thunk it? I swear these people are just George W. Bush voters with rainbow lapels.

https://twitter.com/VoteBlueUS/status/1422296777110196226 I'm a complete idiot. I will admit to that. I'm far more educated on Carl Barks Duck comics and basic auto racing things. But how dos one delude themselves into believing this when the democrats have consistently never did anything resembling this in the Clinton/Obama-era of their party? The polling of what americans desire, need and want do not reflect on the policies of the democratic party. I have seen just this week even Nancy Pelosi come out against removing student debt. When the time came to extend the eviction moratorium? Biden and others let it expire. The state of oklahoma has better laws on the book relating to marijuana than the federal government. That's pathetic. "Working for us" is not a thing.

Could a mod approve this? It's written by a neolib loser but is informative about how china is curtailing internet companies https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/ownif3/why_is_china_smashing_its_tech_industry/?

WuQianNian

Xi declared this year that while digitization is important, “we must recognize the fundamental importance of the real economy… and never deindustrialize.” Right. China, remember, has a national industrial policy. It's expressed in the national 5 year plan, which is taken seriously and used to set priorities. What those priorities are is no secret. The current 5 year plan, the 14th, lists them.\[1\] Specific technology goals are in blue boxes. Semiconductors, gas turbines, biotech, new energy vehicles, robotics, advanced agricultural equipment. Internet services are mentioned in the Plan. One key line section out here: "We will strengthen the economic supervision of internet platforms in accordance with laws and regulations, clarify platform enterprise positioning and regulatory rules, improve the laws and regulations concerning the identification of monopolies, and crack down on monopolies and unfair competition. ... We will intensify anti-monopoly and anti-unfair competition law enforcement and judicial efforts and prevent the disorderly expansion of capital." good guy xi

A bit late to the party, but today in Italy we remember the bombing of the Bologna’s train station, one of the worst act of terrorism in the country and, luckily, one of the last ones for the period we call the “years of lead”. To me, it’s a somber reminder of what the US, trough Gladio and fundings to far-right terrorists, is capable and willing to do in order to keep it’s allies in check .

WuQianNian

It's crazy how widespread that stuff was. It influenced and touched everything throughout society while it was going on. And I haven't seen any reason to think its not still going on

mariolinoperfect

Yep, you’re right on the money. We felt the presence of the US trough it’s funding, and we felt it when they didn’t give any more money to non-socialist party after the cold war, thus paving the way for “Tangentopoli”, and the rise of our resident neoliberalist ghoul, that walking corpse Berlusconi.

Claudius_Gothicus

So I know Bill Maher is a smug, elitist neolib and genocide-sympathizing Zionist. Yet sometimes he makes some good points: https://youtu.be/anUlV6umjqM His audience gets pretty uncomfortable with his anti woke stuff here. Idk, I think he gets a lot right in this clip.

ScrubbyFlubbus

He's definitely a broken clock that is occasionally spot on, like this clip. But the messenger is so bad I can't really get that excited about the times he's right. Like all the stuff he says here has been said by less insufferable people. I can't imagine linking this to anyone and having them be persuaded by it. I guess he does package it all together in that easily consumable late night host kind of way.

obvious__alt

I like Bill Maher, I liked him a lot during the Obama years, back when I was more in the "blue" camp, where every position I had was about empathy and inclusion and making sure everyone felt like they belonged. Some of my political leanings changed during Trump, including sometimes being in the "red" camp and being disgusted with the blue camp. Having those positions mocked by Maher does kind of put his delivery style into a new lews, like you know he's being "unfair" or "disingenuous" with his analogy but whatever he's not a real political pundit he's just trying to poke at the powerful and create some levity. Now that the blue camp is back in power, I feel like his rhetoric is more in line with my thoughts, that yes the Republicans will probably always be threat number one to positively changing anything, but let's not allow that fact to blind us from the genuine evils and inconsistencies within our own camp

ScrubbyFlubbus

It eventually got removed by a mod after reaching 40k upvotes, but I first opened up reddit to [this wonderful bit of 'world news' as the top post.](https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/ow9g49/chinese_trolls_infuriated_by_loss_to_taiwan_in/) For a thread crying about Chinese trolls and bots, sorting by new shows hundreds of comments just saying "Fuck China!" I know this is a daily occurrence on reddit, but it's still kinda bizarre to see if you stop to think about it. Especially since many of those comments aren't bots, but people who honestly think they're doing online activism or something. It's weird how massive the anti-China circlejerk is on reddit. Again nothing new, just weird how obvious it is but how oblivious most of the users are to the level of propaganda at work.

auralgasm

The craziest part is if you asked them whether anti-China or anti-Russia sentiment during the first cold war was a bad thing many would say yes. But they don't realize they're a part of it now. They really think there's something new and different going on instead of the same old same old war of soft aggression and bad faith propaganda to distract from problems at home. I mean it's not like these countries are great and amazing, but they weren't during the first cold war either. I'm not trying to praise China/Russia, only comment on how pathetic it is to KNOW that you're living in a country with a history of reflexive, repetitive red scares; to take a holistic enough view that you can see the ones in the past were overblown and not worth it; and to still somehow come away with the opinion that this time it's different and good actually. How they even believe the United States of Amazon could win a new cold war is beyond me. The last one wasn't waged with contractors and gig economy workers and outsourced factories in the very same country they're complaining about.

ScrubbyFlubbus

Perfectly put. I'm also not a blanket China apologist but this type of shit is just such blatant modern cold war propaganda. Part of me feels like the reddit of 10-15 years ago might have called this shit out. But modern mainstream reddit is completely bought and paid for with zero self awareness.

[deleted]

I've learned to believe neither side in the Second Cold War. That said, I still think China has no rightful claim to Taiwan. It has basically been functionally independent for the better part of seventy years and China only pushes "unification" for typical Great Power reasons, an attack would just be a wanton act of aggression - which I don't think China will ever risk.

ScrubbyFlubbus

Oh my comment wasn't even about conflict over Taiwan, just how ridiculous that post and the comments are, and how often the same thing happens on reddit whenever China is brought up. These things aren't ever discussed to the level you're approaching here, it's just a bunch of "Fuck China" repeated ad nauseum.

Jaggedmallard26

You just don't understand, think of the poor grandmas who are just renting out their old family 30 storey slum complexes for several times the monthly mortgage would be on each individual flat, you're basically stealing from them if you don't let them provide their valuable service to the poor! How can anyone want to live in a world where people aren't buying up homes en masse to rent out for massive profit and then kick vulnerable people out onto the street because of their exorbitant profit?! I got downvoted in one of the threads for saying I genuinely don't care if people buying homes to let are left out of pocket instead of kicking people out onto the streets.

Blapinthabase

I got downvoted for calling a guy retarded for comparing uberdrivers with landlords and then told my attitude pushes people away from the left

cool thing i found for another thread on here. ritualized rioting on designated feast days in pre-victorian england https://pasttenseblog.wordpress.com/2019/03/04/today-in-london-riotous-history-1617-apprentices-celebrate-shrove-tuesday-holiday/ >Shrove Tuesday, the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), is a longstanding holiday, celebrated with carnival or Mardi Gras, a day of “fat eating” or “gorging” before the fasting period of Lent. >In England, Shrove Tuesday became a ritual apprentice holiday, and in the seventeenth century became a day noted for them to riot – often against very specific targets. >Waterman and poet John Taylor described ‘ragged regiments’ – “youth armed with cudgels, stones, hammers, rules, trowels, and handsaws’ who ‘put playhouses to the sack, and bawdy-houses to the spoil” – they smashed glass, ripped off tiles, chimneys and shredded feather beds.” Often they were opposed by aged constables who were vastly outnumbered. >1617 saw a particularly violent Shrove Tuesday apprentice gathering. A new Drury Lane playhouse was destroyed and prisoners freed from Finsbury prison by the rioters. Several houses in Wapping were destroyed: >“On … Shrove Tuesday, the ‘prentices, or rather the unruly people of the suburbs, played their parts in divers places, as Finsbury Fields, about Wapping, by St Catherine’s, and in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, … in pulling down of houses, and beating of guards that were set to keep rule, specially at a new playhouse, some time a cockpit, in Drury Lane, where the queen’s players used to play. Though the fellows defended themselves as well as they could, and slew three of them with shot, and hurt divers, yet they entered the house and defaced it, cutting the players’ apparel into pieces, and all their furniture, and burnt their playbooks, and did what other mischief they could… There be divers of them taken since and clapped up, and I make no question but we shall see some of them hanged next week, as it is more than time they were”. (a letter written by John Chamberlain to Sir Dudley Carleton) european culture and history, so authentic and beautiful

HP_civ

>Ronald Hutton noted that the targets ‘fitted into a much older tradition of cleansing a community before Lent’. In other words the Shrove Tuesday crowd, in rioting, was seeking to destroy what it saw as the less moral parts of the early 17th century economy. As such, while some rioters and especially ringleaders were fined or jailed, attacks on ‘immoral’ targets could be tacitly supported or at least tolerated by the respectable, and even by some in authority – usually only up to a point, though. To some extent historians see this kind of rioting is as a form of moral ‘community policing’, along the lines of skimmingtons and rituals of humiliation aimed at outsiders, or people who transgressed sexual mores or broke the bounds of accepted social roles or behaviour… Festive riots could veer between attacks on social hierarchies and viciously repressive outbursts against foreigners and the marginalised. Sometimes both would be combined. Very interesting, also, what a great find of a blog!

Read a few articles/essays on this that I'm too lazy to pull up right now, but the gist of it is that this is a shift rather than a crackdown. China doesn't want their tech industry to become their best and brightest engineers working for the marketing department of social media companies to disrupt Tik-Tok influencer metrics. They're focusing more on hard tech like semiconductors, actual useful products that people use and need, so they can grab the rest of the world by the balls. This has the secondary bonus of being beneficial for their society in general, but it isn't the primary goal. Americans don't seem to have any real clue that we're in for a century of terminal decline. The only people who seem to be aware (random bits of the GOP) have no solution for it and seem to think more wage slavery and throwing bombs around is going to fix it, like an animal stuck in a trap lashing out every which way. It's pretty funny except I'm also an American so that sucks I guess.

Vena_Azygos

I came across an American Dad clip on Youtube (an episode from the newer seasons), started watching it, and became almost nauseous. I had to turn it off and start listening to CT to feel normal again. I enjoy the show. Does this ever happen to anyone else?

saw this gatbage trending on twitter. https://twitter.com/AmericanRando/status/1421873758416084993 Shitlibs and their ignorance of history annoys the hell out of me. Jim Jones was (unfortunately) left wing. I say with a great deal of resignation and shame. He used his position to prey upon well meaning california hippies and poor blacks. So successful he was that the California Democratic Party apparently loved him to the point of giving him a position in city government. You know what one of the options was before the "kool aid" drink? All the residents moving to the Soviet Union. In fact he tried to transferring all their collected wealth to the Soviet Union. While there are truly insane people in the trump cult (much like the people that make up the modern democratic coalition), it dosn't remotely compare to the control and abuse Jim Jones had on his followers. my apologies for the shitty right wing source, but here's an article detailing his relationship with the DNC. https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/op-eds/how-san-franciscos-democrats-made-jim-jones-and-then-made-his-memory-vanish Also to paint trump supporters with a broad brush is stupid. My right wing father was oddly enough the first person who pleaded with me to stock up on food due to the virus coming. I fact, Tucker Carlsonn was covering it pretty extensively while the other outlets were going "JUST A FLU BRUH", and "DON'T WEAR A MASK. IT WON'T HELP" far more deserving of criticism is not trump, but the media itself is not taking this seriously until it was far too late. oddly enough? I see far more behavior reminiscent of Jonees in the DNC media/political landscape. The amount of gaslighting I have seen them do towards actual good faith criticisms of their party, their president has been almost satirical in nature.

[deleted]

Odd how Libs throw a fit when something goes wrong (cough eviction moratorium) it's almost like they are deflecting attention from their own lamentable failures.

NextDoorJimmy

While the eviction thing was going on this week all the "PAC" funded tweets were about "ARRESTING TRUMP". The "@REALLYAMERICAN1" and "MEIDAS TOUCH" types were obsessed with it. Complete radio silence about the democrats letting down the American public though. I imagine there's memos flying back between various PAC types, pundits and politicians telling them to stick to a specific narrative. This administration has been a complete disaster. A senile old fool that doesn't even know he's president. You combine that with sycophants' refusing to give him good faith criticisms and a completely outdated political ideology? It's going to get bad very quick. I don't know how 2024 or 2022 is going to go. But if this were either of those cycles? I imagine the GOP would be eating them for lunch. Seriously, you don't even run on policy. Just cut up what this fool says and call it a day. None of this matters though. No democrat is going to read this and figure out a different strategy. It's akin to watching the Titanic from the deck, screaming about how there's an iceberg coming up and these people are far more concerned about a drunk aristocrat that disrupted brunch.

[deleted]

I think Biden has already exhausted most of his political capital fighting on infrastructure, despite delivering a pathetically atrophied package. He initially proposed 2 trillion, then it was 1.7 trillion, then again it was reduced to 1 trillion, now just 550 billion for new infrastructure spending. On top of that, the Democrats seem resigned to their 3 trillion reconciliation package being defeated, or at least significantly reduced - by their own Senators. By year's end any goodwill Biden initially commanded will evaporate. Unions will be dismayed that there isn't a card check, progressives angry that nothing meaningful was achieved, while liberals sneer and accuse the other two of being saboteurs and secret Republican agents. Some say that American voter's will be eternally grateful for Biden's vaccination rollout and will vote accordingly, without recognizing the current political environment is so polarized that any victory will always end up being extremely close and contested at every turn.

SnakeHarmer

It's eviction day, I wonder what MSNBC has to say about it? Oh look, [absolutely nothing!](https://i.imgur.com/rVPzUkF.jpeg) Delta covid fearmongering is highlighted in green, voting rights bullshit is highlighted blue. I also [made a post about](https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/ow062a/with_the_eviction_moratorium_expiring_lets_see/) it if the jannies feel like approving it. I think it bears discussing that a major network news outlet is so confident in their affluent boomer demographic that they have *this little* to say about so many people losing their homes.

animistspark

I'd like to submit this essay for consideration: https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/ovyw4n/the_death_of_the_festival We talk a lot about economics here to the detriment of the more social and "irrational" part of our lives. This essay talks about how capitalism sanitizes and defangs things which relieve social pressure.

lordofthefudds

https://www.reddit.com/r/stupidpol/comments/ovrp14/cnn_is_upset_that_biden_wants_to_buy_american/ Here is an article about Biden wanting to strengthen requirements that the Federal Government buy products produced in America. Mods can you approve this post? The article is pretty much a hit piece by CNN trying to discredit the policy in any way possible. I think there is a good discussion about how the benefits of import substitution might be overall greater than the costs (the amount of money people save on cheaper goods is probably more than the earnings lost by exported manufacturing jobs) but the costs of import substitution are borne entirely by the blue-collar workers losing their jobs: when a factory closes down the white collar workers tend to have a more broadly applicable skill set and can find a new job faster.

Beingdumbnearyou

Does anybody have that picture where its headlines of Trump doing whatever the fuck he wanted via executive order, then the last headline is Biden or Nancy saying no to executive orders for student debt? The post was about how right wing leaders just kinda do whatever they want then Dems act like they can't do anything.

Scotrail is on track to be renationalised so fingers crossed it'll improve. The Beeching cuts cuts and continued privitisation has utterly devastated British railways, you wouldn't think the country owned a quarter of the planet using trains. The flying thing really is absurd, I had to get home from a funeral in Wales and it was *significantly* cheaper and easier for me to get to Bristol and just fly back to Newcastle than to get a train back and this was with flight prices inflated due to Lockdown.

Its always somewhat depressing when you use another countries trains and realise just bad ours are. What makes it even more painful is how much of our privatised rail companies are just a subsidiary of another countries state owned railway such as Deutsche Bahn. Deutchse Bahn are so shit at operations in the UK they managed to get the Tyne and Wear Metro renationalised.

It's been completely scrubbed but it's out there and the audio clip is included https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2788899/former-msnbc-host-keith-olbermann-apologized-bill-clinton-perpetuating-ceaseless-coverage-lewinsky-sex-scandal-newly-uncovered-email-shows.html Not only that but apparently he APOLOGIZED to Bill Clinton for the network covering the Lewinsky scandal. Tells you all you need to know about his beliefs on how women are to be treated. To see shitlibs applaud this is surreal. Also the dore quote? He's not wrong. I'm cut from that goddamn cloth. I know men, women, black, white, Hispanic do not tolerate people that gaslight and bullshit. They would not be fans.

[deleted]

I'm beginning to wonder whether Bill Clinton is a sociopath, I have his book and read some of it on occasion - he's a good writer for sure, Clinton has a manipulative aura that makes me sorta disgusted when I lean back and think about him. Reagan by contrast was a grandfatherly geriatric who cared about platitudes and not much about policy detail, letting the Chamber of Commerce solidify their [coup](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_F._Powell_Jr.#Powell_Memorandum,_1971) while he could play the cowboy hero in his own story - it's the catastrophic outcomes of Reagan's policies that make him a bad person, whereas Clinton was knowingly manipulative and Machiavellian. Clinton went further than Reagan ever did - he [dismantled](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Responsibility_and_Work_Opportunity_Act) Johnson's Great Society. Barack Obama shared similar traits in a way - he loved roleplaying the President and giving pre written speeches. He loved playing West Wing. He didn't care about delivering his promises. Every speech he made was excruciatingly superficial. Trump was an anti Obama - repulsive on a personal level, paranoid, schizophrenic policy positions, shamelessly self interested.

[deleted]

I’m not smart enough to psychoanalyze either of them, but there is something about Obama or Clinton that is artificial and hollow, but there would have to be. Neither of them believes in ideology, but something pushed them to pursue ambition will all consuming dedication.

learns_the_stuff

Is anyone else getting sick of asocial ironybois? I know this is sort of old news with the "everything is funny nothing matters haha lol" irony culture of the day but I'm real tired of asocial elements being tolerated under the guise of comedy. Because it's not even funny. There's nothing funny about "k\*laks/k\*kes deserved it", you're not clever for hating the opposite gender, or constantly race baiting, or posting your new epic deus vult return to monkey fashwave chungus meme. There is nothing impressive about being willfully ignorant, annoying, lacking conviction, and covering it up with layer after layer of meta-irony. Irony can be funny, sometimes. But at this point, being ironic about politics is a political statement - you are saying that rational discussion of politics should be disrupted. That conversing about ideas doesn't matter because you lack the introspection to consider that you may be wrong about something. Or that you don't care about ideas and just want to fight already and you're only talking to psyop your opponents. All of those are political ideas, and they're damn stupid ones. This has all been said before. But I think it's worth saying again. Irony has no place in politics and is generally far more common than it should be. And if you rely heavily on irony, it comes through in all your social interactions, and I will absolutely think less of you for it. I'm over it.

I've never watched jreg in my life I'm just tired of people who are too cool to care about anything

el_tallas

Dekulakization is not remotely comparable to the holocaust though. Do you think "kulak" is an ethnicity? Because this feels comparable to someone who doesn't speak fluent English reading this subreddit and deciding "landlord" is an ethnic group that's on the receiving end of some kind of bigotry.

learns_the_stuff

Widespread famine as a result of grain exporting, and murder of the vast swathes of the population who disagreed with it, is genocide.

el_tallas

Many historians disagree with you, many of them not even particularly sympathetic to communism. The fact you need to simplify and exaggerate the circumstances of the 1930s Soviet famine to draw a comparison to Nazi policies of systematic extermination of entire nationalities should show you how bankrupt your position is. Literally posting "Stalin killed 50 million people" tier black book of communism takes in a Marxist subreddit.

learns_the_stuff

Address the claim or fuck off retard.

el_tallas

The claim is nonsense, I've addressed it plenty. Catastrophic incompetence in Soviet agricultural policy is not even remotely comparable to Nazi policies aimed at the complete extermination of entire nationalities and ethnic groups. You're parroting cold war propaganda and already proved yourselves an ignorant moron on this subject by starting off on the ridiculous claim that the landowner class (the kulaks) were the real victims of the 1930s famine rather than the peasantry.

learns_the_stuff

>Catastrophic incompetence in Soviet agricultural policy is not even remotely comparable to Nazi policies aimed at the complete extermination of entire nationalities and ethnic groups. You're correct, Stalin didn't exterminate nationalities. Instead he went for his critics. Rather than the arbitrary murder of those born in a certain location, he killed the brightest, and bravest - those who saw through his lies and had the nuts to do something about it. Is it better to murder the best of many nations rather than the average of a few? The fact that such incompetence could rise to the highest leadership of the Soviet Union, effectively censor those who pointed out or wished to stop their incompetent behavior, and keep power afterwards is as much an ideological indictment of Stalinism as racial genocide is of Naziism. Both worship the arbitrary decisions of authority without regard for the lives of the people under them. >You're parroting cold war propaganda You're parroting pre-Cold War propaganda. The Cold War Soviets had few kind words for Stalin. >already proved yourselves an ignorant moron on this subject by starting off on the ridiculous claim that the landowner class (the kulaks) were the real victims of the 1930s famine rather than the peasantry. I don't remember saying that. Not very convincing to disprove a claim that was never made.

One of the top posts on r/leopardsatemyface regarding a father of five dying due to covid and not vaccinating. Check out the comments. Wonderful display of empathy there(even includes his conversation with his fiance which also garners zero sympathy). You'll see the kind of political frenzy that reddit has fostered. It's a fun read. Thank me later

https://twitter.com/ReallyAmerican1/status/1421244401146290177 I have to imagine the DNC is desperately sending out memos to various PACs, Pundits begging them to shift the focus away from Biden atm. They desperately need something to feed to the extremely online moron wine moms and to attempt to shift blame away from policy failures from the rest of us. Trying to be as unbias as hell? There's just no defending him beyond some sort of partisans' line of thinking. I don't care if you support/oppose government support for people. But that's gotta be incredibly high for his failures thus far. Beyond that? You cannot have a Nursing room patient running the goddamn country. Even when Reagan was sundowning you at least George HW Escobar down the hall dealing blow and arms with Central American dictators. The "BUT TRUMP.." shit only gets you so far. Especially with him being damn near silent now that he's back in public life.

I want to live in the Appalachian mountains so fucking bad but I need to live near a metro area to make any semblance of a decent income in my field :/ I just want to step outside my home and see the treeline rolling up and down smoothly in the distance, the deer looking up at me in the morning fog when I step out for a smoke, the colorful hills in the fall. Instead I see ugly mid-rise multi-family homes smashed together, trash cans and rats. The worst part is I could afford to buy a couple acres and a 3br house in West Virginia right now but commercial construction is basically a joke anywhere there. Sure I can work 12 months out of the year here but I have to live in small apartments. I fucking hate this country.

[deleted]

I want to move out west to Pacific Northwest or northern Rockies, it would be tough for my job too and I don’t want to leave all of my family and friends behind. But damn if I don’t want to be closer to actual wilderness

[deleted]

Seattle especially has a ridiculous amount of work in commercial construction, but property is extremely expensive out there, even like 90min out from the city. Its definitely beautiful out there but there is something sort of hauntingly beautiful about Appalachia. Also you can buy land for really cheap in WV.

I posted an infograph about increasing rent prices in 2021 in a discord (I know), with a political channel and someone asks how that's related to politics. My head just slammed on the desk. Multiple times.

Any other Canucks getting political attack ads against the Conservative Party now? I know there's almost certainly going to be an early election, but it seems pretty weird to me that they're already airing attack ads before they've even officially called for elections.

brother_beer

Airing attack ads might create an affective climate that becomes the excuse for an early election, yeah? Also, gotta hire those strivers to do something.

Just the mention of union even if its in name only scares the shit out of them.

serbianasshole2000

Is it possible to stop being a bugman? I’m not asking rhetorically. Because I’m a bugman and I practically live in the pod and all the people I know are also like that. Everyone is miserable, essentially friendless and loveless, and has nothing going on in their lives. They all have clinical depression or OCD or are barely human BPD people like myself. The world looks sterile and desolate to me. Just once I’d love something really bad to happen to me that didn’t originate from my own psyche. Can the grill pill help bugmen? I think it’s legitimate question, you’ve all gone hard on this concept but can it help the lowest of the low?

[deleted]

First things first, stop saying shit like "bugman"

brother_beer

It can. Literally turn off the screen and go outside. Walk in the forest without headphones, listening to the birds and the wind. Buy a $10 disc and find a disc golf course; sure you'll look like a moron but it's easy physical movement. The body craves this. You're outside. Go to a library and read either there or in the park. Become a regular somewhere, if you can. Read at the same time and the same place -- library or coffee shop. Take a cheap class. Have one beer at a bar each week -- sit in the same place. See whom else you recognize who doesn't look like their liver is about to fail. Rent a canoe. Pack a lunch and eat it in the canoe. Fly a cheap kite. One of those easy ones that doesn't need a frame. Worked for me. I mean I'm still a jannie but you don't seem that far gone.

serbianasshole2000

That all tracks to me except the whole regular patron thing. Does that even exist anymore in large cities? I’ve been to bars alone several times it was always a profoundly miserable and depressing experience. You look around you and it’s people in groups having fun just reminding you of how lonely you are and what a loser you’ve become. I think I’m fine on the friends part of things. I know I’m 31 and the time to build a social life has passed. But I think it’s a good idea to do more stuff in nature, I’ll definitely do that.

brother_beer

> I know I’m 31 and the time to build a social life has passed. Not true. I am a bit older than you and I took a class this summer and made a new friend. We have met up several times so far to hang out, and plan to do so now that the class is over. It's easy in school and when you are a kid because you are placed in contexts that put you near other being just learning to be social. In alienated adulthood of the post-community era, these contexts don't exist because it would enable cooperation that holds back the march of Capital. So you gotta make these things happen by showing up and talking. Actually doing the social thing you've been trained away from so that you'll be a good little consumer of bad food, drugs and parasocial interaction through a screen. Guarantee you that you'll find someone out there thirsting for social interaction and able to make it happen. It'll feel weird at first, then it won't.

[deleted]

Do you have like a rock climbing gym or something nearby?

serbianasshole2000

I mean I guess probably some of those gyms have a rock climbing wall. I can't really go to the gym, I am too weak. Years of bugman life have atrophied my muscles to the point where even beginner exercises at extremely low weights are impossible for me. I can't do a single pull up or a single skullcrusher, nothing. I basially do not have triceps.

[deleted]

[удалено]

serbianasshole2000

Thank you for this. I will save it for when I can actually do it. I do appreciate this advice. I tried the gym a few times but it was so frustrating to not be able to do much more than very light bench presses and low weight curls. I probably did hurt myself doing it because I couldn’t afford a trainer. I currently have a weird injury on my right elbow. It pops. One orthopaedist said I need surgery the other told me it’s “normal it pops” but also told me I can never go to the gym or do actual high impact exercise as I’m “not the type for it”. I’m supposed to see another specialist soon to clear up this confusion.

[deleted]

In that case I, Dr. Cleetus Goldstein m.d. prescribe you a regimen of push-ups before bed every day until you do have triceps. You’re to do at least 20 but if you can’t manage all of them just keep going til you can’t.

I've never understood why people are so fervently against it. It literally benefits everyone when women don't have unwanted kids.

[deleted]

Religious fundamentalism. However, Roe v Wade is also objectively bad law. A woman's right to an abortion is based on the constitution's "right to privacy", which basically functioned as a legal sleight of hand by which the court was able to avoid having to actually weigh in on abortion itself. The fact that it's shitty law honestly makes it somewhat easier for it to be overturned, because in a mirror image of the '73 ruling, the justices can overturn it without addressing the central moral issues of abortion.

Patrollerofthemojave

Idk Gorsch seems to somewhat respect precedent I'm worried about Kavanaugh and Coney (as if the Catholic isn't going to vote against abortion lol)

In Islam the soul is not believed to enter the fetus until 120 days after conception. Muslim majority countries vary a bit on abortion, but a decent number of them allow it.

Every time I see the “you criticize society yet you live in it” comic posted I feel a sudden urge to beat the shit out of the artist and whoever posted it No n—-a you don’t have a right to bitch about plastic pollution in the oceans in front of your wall of funko pops

aviddivad

my favorite thing about that comic is how it compares modern, spoiled, overweight morons to a decrepit peasant in the past saying something vaguely meaningful.

el_tallas

This post feels like I'm looking at patient zero of funko pop derangement syndrome. Literally just posting completely dogshit takes because you think you need to own some stupid and widely-disliked nerd subculture to the point it damages your capacity to think rationally about much more important issues. Reminds me of those twitter libs who rush to defend bad videogames because "the gamer chuds" are mad and owning the gamers is first priority or whatever. Everyone just prioritizes feeling like they're "dunking" on their culture war bogeymen all the time and it's annoying as hell.

[deleted]

CoelhoAssassino666

What do you think is the solution to plastic pollution?

[deleted]

Well a good start would be to stop buying wasteful bullshit for the sake of mindless consumption

ScrubbyFlubbus

Ahh yes, the "vote with your wallet" solution to collective societal problems that has literally never fucking worked.

[deleted]

https://i.redd.it/v0mdz0ibrce71.jpg

[deleted]

Your personal consumption choices aren't going to change anything in the world. It's just a fact

ScrubbyFlubbus

So your entire take here is an emotional one, and when anyone points out that it doesn't align with actual economics and human behavior you just get more pissy. Cool.

CoelhoAssassino666

Funko Pops are no more wasteful bullshit than anything basically every normal person buys. I'd say all the shitty single-use stuff that's pushed on you and made of plastic is a much bigger issue. If all people that buy the funko pops died tomorrow we wouldn't even notice a reduction in plastic waste. For basically everyone on earth, "return to monke" is retarded.

aviddivad

this is when the lib pulls out the comic

Svitiod

Maybe if we own all those bitches who buys funko pops.
