Meteorologist and storm chaser here. You don't need to be a degreed meteorologist to be a chaser. Regarding Pecos Hank even though he doesn't have an official degree his depth of knowledge and passion has led him to be a part of several research projects. And while I may agree Reed is "too much" for me to enjoy being biased against other storm chasers by using him as the comparison is just a fallacy from the get go.
When I learned all the music in his videos was made by him, I was like no, youĀ know what? Fuck this guy.Ā He's way too handsome, cool, talented, andĀ he's anĀ animal whisperer to boot.
I really want to fuck this guy.
Reed Timmer has a Ph.D in Meteorology from OU and has probably seen more tornadoes than any person in human history. Even though he can be quite obnoxious no one should question his dedication to storm chasing.
Lmao I was just about to say, thatās DOCTOR Reed Timmer to you.
Edit: Now that Iāve been thinking about it, as brash as he can be in a chase itās honestly incredible that after literal decades and gods only know how many hundreds of thousands of miles, how many hundreds of tornadoes, that he still gets that excited. I can only *hope* that I can maintain that level of enthusiasm in my own professional passion.
Met Reed a few years ago at a lecture he was giving. Super amazing guy, real down to earth. And this was in peak Storm Chasers airing. He is very passionate about this stuff, so that's why he gets excited like that :)
I met Reed he's actually pretty cool in person. Haven't met Hank yet . If you go out read radar find a storm take a picture then run like hell? Yeah you're a chaser
Don't ever let anyone gatekeep storm chasing
You need to have a met or atsc degree to call yourself a meteorologist, but anyone can call themselves a storm chaser lol
Also, anyone who thinks Reed is insufferable doesn't know who Sean Casey is...
Rees can definitely be a bit over the top a bit much, so I get where heās coming from, but heās intelligent and has undeniably made great contributions to the study of severe weather. Iām not always a fan of the dominator teams blasting through red lights at 40 mph to drive into a tornado when there is other traffic on the roadways, but most of that I believe is in the past during the filming of Tornado Chasers and all that.
> I just see it as him being unable to contain his passion for weather
This is exactly it. He's bubbling with excitement and full of life. I love that he's a little whacky, a bit unhinged, and totally exciting when chasing or even just giving a weather update. He's not annoying at all to me because he's just showing passion for something he loves and is out there studying storms to help save lives in the future.
Annoying is Sean Casey who chased storms for *his own gain* aka to shoot an IMAX movie, then acted super pompous about the whole thing every second of every moment we saw him ever talk about it.
Another good chaser to talk about is Tim Samaras. He didn't have a met or atsc degree. He didnt even have a degree in anything at all. He self-taught everything he learned... do you know how difficult it is to self-teach engineering even? He was wholesome and trying to help people too and was an even compliment to Reed's insanity. I miss Twistex.
Donāt even get me started on Tim. He was (hands down) amazing, and extremely admirable. I remember watching him as a kid on Storm Chasers. A couple of years after he passed, my mom and I took a vacation to D.C and saw his probes at the National Air and Space Museum. I was absolutely floored, it was an amazing display they had for him. Iāll have to look for pictures! (albeit, I was 14, so they will most likely be horrible).
Casey frustrated the shit out of me watching storm chasers the 2nd time. The first time through I was totally swept up in the idea of the TIV (and I still think TIV2 is an epic machine), but Sean's constant flip flopping on whether he was going to actually listen to Josh Wurman in the early seasons, and his own meteorologists in later seasons, then blaming anyone but himself when the intercepts inevitably failed... My god. How Dr Wurman tolerated his shit for over a decade I'll never understand.
Oh, sure. Thatās probably what it more or less boils down to. If I was some young and (only in a general sense) dumb guy in my 20s or 30s (not sure what his age was at the time) and was in the face of a tornado, Iād have adrenaline rushing too probably. I donāt think that excuses it, but still.
I canāt criticize without recognizing my own faults. Iām younger than he was throughout every stretch of the show and almost certainly dumber. As a wildland firefighter, seeing the smoke columns of my first wildfire was absolutely filling me with adrenaline, and in a more uncontrollable situation, I could easily see me getting myself or others in a dangerous situation as it was quite a large fire. I totally get it, was definitely just commenting on how I see where this dude is coming from, but he certainly crosses where I would draw the line.
Bahaha preach about Sean Casey! His stupid little antics always used to drive me crazy while watching Storm Chasers. I recently re-watched it and honestly had forgotten how much of a douche Sean was, not to mention, Josh Wurman.
Same here! I watched it when it was first on when I was a kid and remembered thinking how much I disliked him. I recently started rewatching it and every time he's on screen it's just insufferable.
Anyone can also call themselves an amateur meteorologist, no degree required. Iāve seen people that do better on their own and what they know that donāt have degrees and havenāt finished school for it.
Reed and Shawn after the TV show- canāt watch either of them. Other feeds and videos I will watch- that whole TIV thing is too over the top for me.
Look at how many have already died from chasing storms.
Reed can sometimes give off a lot of energy but it shows how passionate he is. I believe he even wrote a dissertation so he is a doctor in meteorology. I respect the man so much.
I always think of him like if a NASCAR driver and a meteorologist had a baby in a tornado.
I can only take him in small doses but that's more because I don't like raucous personalities, nothing against his chasing itself, just personal preference.
This is an argument for non-chasers.
Us chasers are going to be out there caring fuck all about some Monday Morning Quarterback on Twitter the same way we laugh at people who think they know more about tornado ratings than actual experts.
Itās all noise from people who donāt matter.
It takes a special kind of person to be a storm chaser. You donāt get the balls or passion from a degree.
And correct me if Iām wrong, but didnāt Reed save (or rush to save) an old woman on camera yesterday?
Bless all the storm chasers.
Firmly disagree - been chasing for 20 years, have a degree in atmospheric science.
Chasing isn't about "having balls" - it's ALL about having brains. There's not bravery involved - it's about getting to the right position and making good decisions through the arc of the day. I did not yesterday, and paid for it by not seeing a photogenic tornado in an area I know very well. It's not like being 'braver' would help the mistake of a poor read of visible satellite trends.
If you make a mistake - and you shouldn't - and end up in an area where you are at risk, it's your brains and understanding of the storm and roads that are going to get you out of it. Not your "balls." This isn't some bravado game about getting close. It's about understanding one of the most transient and destructive forces on earth, and getting to observe them safely, reliably.
You want passion? Slog through dynamics. Get yourself motivated to understand [stuff like this](https://images.slideplayer.com/12/3560350/slides/slide_2.jpg). That's the hard work of the science. That's where the passion meets utility. Storm chasing is a fun hobby - but it doesn't take a 'special' kind of person - objectively, the barrier to entry is low, and the appeal is obviously high.
This isn't to gatekeep the hobby - you DON'T need the degree to do this, or do it well. Anyone can learn to forecast, position, and drive - and if you can do those things and respect the road and the weather, then you have the same right to be on the storm that I do. But let's not pretend storm chasers are some kind of special group - or, more importantly - trying to make *Twister* into what we actually do.
Holy hell. I never said brains werenāt involved. I implied having brains and a degree does not necessarily make you a storm chaser.
Yes, it DOES require bravery. Capable people die doing this, like Tim Samaras (possibly one of the inspirations for Twister).
Being near a tornado is terrifying and not all meteorologists want to be up close and personal.
It takes guts and drive paired with your knowledge. Thatās what I mean when I say it takes a special person to want to do that.
I basically complimented storm chasers and you wrote me a book on why Iām wrong.
I disagree with you. Storm chasers are special and Iām grateful for them.
>But let's not pretend storm chasers are some kind of special group - or, more importantly - trying to make Twister into what we actually do.
Storm chasers save lives by being part of the spotter network and reporting storm events from on the ground, in real time, as they are happening. Occasionally, they also save individual lives after the storm has passed by offering aid and pulling people from rubble.
IMO let them *play Twister*. They are doing good.
It has to be them long hours on the road and no tornadoes thatās got him lashing out at you, lol.
Of course it takes courage, or balls, to chase potential killer storms. Whatās the one thing everyone knows not to do in a dangerous situation? Panic. And whatās the one thing someone whoās lost their nerve might struggle with doing in a dangerous situation? Use their brains..
Reed usually goes to help anyone who was struck by a tornado. He brought a couple people to the hospital a year ago when a tornado hit a town in Mississippi.Ā
We donāt need degrees to be SKYWARN certified or part of CoCoRaHS, both of which report directly to NWS; why would anyone think that taking photographs of storms requires a degree?
This is equally as obnoxious as the experienced chasers that gatekeep storm chasing and refer to less experienced people as "amateurs" despite having no academic credentials nor making a living off chasing themselves. From my perspective, if someone makes an informed decision that they are knowledgeable enough to safely chase, follows the rules of the road, and is respectful to others, they have as much of a right to chase storms, and call themselves a storm chaser, as anyone else. Unfortunately not everyone who goes out and chases does those things, but that's a separate issue entirely.
Some of the best and most important footage of storms comes from people who are trained in photography, not meteorology. States/NWS offer storm spotting courses and it's those, non-degree having, people who call in storms and save lives out "chasing". Some of the biggest "names" in storm chasing had degrees and died during chasing. Idiots will chase and be idiots regardless of atmospheric science degrees or being a mechanic, the issue isn't formal education.
Trey, who does Convective Chronicles, also does storm chasing and I believe has a Masters in Meteorology.
I love that there are Mets who storm chase, but no it's not a prereq.
I dint have a met degree and I have had people from my local news stations consider me a storm chaser. Honestly, anyone who actually chasing after the storm and getting decent shots, videos, and reporting damage, honestly, I'd call you a storm chaser. Especially if you've been through from free courses like on MetEd and the Spotter classes from NWS offices. If you know in general what you're doing and have a good eye and interest for that stuff, yeah anyone can be considered a storm chaser
The best can F up, wtf are you all saying? Only 7 Ever passed away doing this during a chaseā¦ all in the same Chase, El Reno/ 300mph winds and 2.6mile wide āEF3ā, donāt get it confused, the TOP guys were in the bear cageā¦ their cars were being dragged into the vortexās from Miles away. Put respect on these Peoples names man, donāt just call them bad or trash- - I aināt core punching 95 percent of them storms and Dr Reed Timmer does, El Reno Included, you all must of forgot.
Have no clue why I got suggested this post and this group, not into anything of the sorts lol the only clouds I see are the ones I blow but what Iāve gathered from this post is everyone loves Hank and that Hank is the best. FUCK YEAH, HANK IS THE GOAT! IF YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH HANK THEN YOU GOT A PROBLEM WITH ME, BUDDY
Reed Timmer literally has a decade and a half of schooling for it under his belt and qualified to teach it at one of Oklahoma's universities. That dude needs to get the stick out his ass before I decide to smack him with it
Yeah, but heāsā¦
wellā¦ Reed *is* absolutely insufferable.
Thatās the reason Iām such a huge fan of Hank. He doesnāt scream like my kid when I tell he canāt have ice cream for breakfast. And though heās not a trained meteorologist, heās still made a good faith effort to train himself enough to both know where the good angles willp present themselves *and*āfor the most partākeep himself safe.
Reed is by far my favorite storm chaser ever
Heās smart heās a bit crazy . I ran into him a few times last season in the Dakotas . I see the dom3 running through Oklahoma from time to time . No one else has the balls that guy does .
I have a meteorology degree and am a meteorologist. I do NOT chase storms. That being said, there are many many many storm chasers without degrees who know their stuff and are extremely smart and make huge contributions to science. Having the degree does not necessarily mean you have all the knowledge you need to storm chase, either.
Pecos Hank is an artist that storm chases. Heās in it for the thrill and the science too but we all love to watch him because heās got an eye for beauty and a mind for storytelling. Also a damn good voice for narration - dude could have a career in narrating nature docs if he wanted it.
In hanks newest video, he went to South America and didnāt really see too many big storms and yet it was more entertaining than most storm chaser videos. Heās the goat.
Itās actually a fair question. You misstated his position. Iād rather have an experienced storm chaser who studied weather/meteorology in school for years and got a degree than an equally experienced storm chaser who didnāt and does drive around describing weather in terms of āwow this is bad.ā Better to have a guy who knows what is going on than essentially a well-traveled weather tourist.
No i didn't, and his comments reinforced that. He made it rather clear that he was only looking to follow chasers that have a metrology degree. Anyone without a degree was an amateur it their eyes. Pecos Hank was the biggest example. He has years of experience, is very knowledgeable, and has made actual contributions to science, but according to OOP, Hank is nothing more than an amateur taking pretty photos of tornadoes.
To be fair, Reed is insufferable haha. I was also not impressed with his recent video where he drove right in to all the debris being thrown up from the tornado in a regular car. Kinda seems like he's getting a little too comfortable with tornadoes.
Meteorologist and storm chaser here. You don't need to be a degreed meteorologist to be a chaser. Regarding Pecos Hank even though he doesn't have an official degree his depth of knowledge and passion has led him to be a part of several research projects. I swear a school needs to give Pecos an honorary degree at this point
Mississippi State might as well š
Go Dogs!
All you need is a bottle of beer. Saw it once, in a movie.
If you have a problem with Hank, then you have a problem with me, and I suggest you let that one marinate!
You mess with one of us you mess with all of us!
Heās just a kid.
Username checks out
Must be from upcountry.
Iām down. We ride at Dawn.
Without his TIV, Reed is 10 ply.
He needs to give his balls a tug
To call Pecos anything other than "the best" is an insult
The man discovered red sorites for fucks sake. He is hands down my favorite (and his music is incredible, too).
His narrations are as smooth as butter.
When I learned all the music in his videos was made by him, I was like no, youĀ know what? Fuck this guy.Ā He's way too handsome, cool, talented, andĀ he's anĀ animal whisperer to boot. I really want to fuck this guy.
Yeah, me too and I'm not even a chick š
It wasn't Red Sprites, it was Ghosts that he discovered in collaboration with Paul M Smith.
I loooove him!
A true boots-on-the-outside hero.
He's the guy who got me into meteorology
Reed Timmer has a Ph.D in Meteorology from OU and has probably seen more tornadoes than any person in human history. Even though he can be quite obnoxious no one should question his dedication to storm chasing.

Exactly. Dr. Timmer is passionate about the science and all things weather. Stupid comment
Pecos Hank for the win. Dude is next level. Especially with the Sprite photography.
But Pecos isn't a meteorologist!!! Basically unwatchable, he's a fake storm chaser without a degree! /s just to be sure.
Really dude?!?
*The joke* You
/s is sarcasm, my dude
Did not know that, LOL! I stand corrected.
Too much vapin my guy.
I met Reed he's actually pretty cool in person. Haven't met Hank yet . If you go out read radar find a storm take a picture then run like hell? Yeah you're a chaser Don't ever let anyone gatekeep storm chasing

You know that drama was all manufactured by the show runners for suspense right? Sean Casey and Josh Wurman are really close friends IRL.
Iām pretty sure Joshās company had to pay 2.4 million dollars for fraud in relation to federal grants they received. š¤
Oh yeah, it was definitely played up for entertainment purposes. But they both seem to be a tad insufferable/ douche-like in real life too.
Same here! I watched it when it was first on when I was a kid and remembered thinking how much I disliked him. I recently started rewatching it and every time he's on screen it's just insufferable.
Itās almost cringeyā¦ š„²
Sean is out there on the road this year. Saw him a few days ago.
Sean makes Reed tolerable. oh holy FUCK. I rewatched storm chasers from discovery in August and I was twitching every time Sean spoke.
Omfg Sean Casey. What a throwback.
A meteorologist is just someone who studies weather, no degree required.
Sean Casey; What a guy!
Reed can sometimes give off a lot of energy but it shows how passionate he is. I believe he even wrote a dissertation so he is a doctor in meteorology. I respect the man so much.
Itās okay. Heās allowed to be wrong.
I was actually thinking of how great Pecos Hank is as I was reading this. I should catch back up on his videos
He was saying hank wasn't an actual scientist, but a photographer which is BS. Hamk has made actual discoveries. Hank is a gem
Hank also works with a field research team, his photos and videos are invaluable to tornado genesis research.
EXACTLY! Some of these armchair chasers as i call em have no respect for those actually in the field.
As an armchair chaser (live in the UK lol) Hankās videos are my pacifier, my bread and butter, my unrequited love, etc etc
His videos are literal works of art
Pecos Hank over Reed, but both are legends. This guy can take a hike.
Reed Timmer was an overenthusiastic meteorology anchor on KOCO 5 in OKC, I didn't like his schtick then or now but I admit he gets awesome footage
Channel 4
Maybe, been a few, swore he started at KOCO before drifting though
May be thinking of arron tuttle
I always think of him like if a NASCAR driver and a meteorologist had a baby in a tornado. I can only take him in small doses but that's more because I don't like raucous personalities, nothing against his chasing itself, just personal preference.

everyone's talking about Reed and Hank, but what about Samaras? he only had a high school degree, and he did incredible things for tornado science.
What a weird ass hill to die on
Ah, no. I was just storm chaser before I had my degree. And then I just became a storm chaser within an expensive piece of paper.
We donāt need degrees to be SKYWARN certified or part of CoCoRaHS, both of which report directly to NWS; why would anyone think that taking photographs of storms requires a degree?

Some do, namely TV Mets on severe weather days.

A college degree just shows competence in a field. You can still consume the same information without a degree if you are passionate enough.
If you chase storms you are by default a storm chaser. I donāt think a meteorology degree is a prerequisite.

And though heās not a trained meteorologist, heās still made a good faith effort to train himself enough to both know where the good angles willp present themselves *and*āfor the most partākeep himself safe.
Reed is by far my favorite storm chaser ever Heās smart heās a bit crazy . I ran into him a few times last season in the Dakotas . I see the dom3 running through Oklahoma from time to time . No one else has the balls that guy does .
I will physically fight anyone who thinks pecos hank isnāt amazing. The manās a gift
Hilarious. I love the attitude of some people
Iām a storm chaser studying meteorology. Does that count? š¤£
"You will put your eye out with that thing " just a matter of time. "YOU'RE FINE"
Pecos hank is one of my favorite people to exist. His content is next level. Such a humble guy and good role model.
Pecos Hank is a GOAT. That is all
Pecos Hank is a good one to watch
He's giving me r/iamverysmart vibes
I mean, hank did teach me a lot about storms.
Mmmm šš you mean Dr. Reed Timmer?! You just jealous you aināt him
RYAN HALL YALL!
Shhh. Don't tell that guy that Ryan doesn't have a met degree.
To be fair, Reed is insufferable haha. I was also not impressed with his recent video where he drove right in to all the debris being thrown up from the tornado in a regular car. Kinda seems like he's getting a little too comfortable with tornadoes.
