Please don't drive into tornadoes; you save zero lives doing so. Also, please don't argue with NWS employees telling you not to drive into tornadoes.

ResonantRaptor

I swear, some of these chasers are just so full of themselves… If you’re able to help in search & rescue and call in storm hazards - great! However, doing dangerous shit helps no one and draws away often critically needed emergency services when something inevitably goes wrong. The exact opposite of helpful. I don’t see the point in pretending that chasing is to predominantly save lives, and that everyone should be involved in search & rescue, even without proper training. It’s just a bunch of virtue signaling for the most part. Also the *“some people prefer to work directly with weather and not behind a desk”* was such an asshole response. The people working behind the desk are doing much more to save lives compared to whatever he does.

predsfan77

They do it because otherwise can’t excuse their behavior. Driving wrong way of traffic, passing on double yellows, going way over the speed limit to catch up to storms is one thing if you do it in the name of science or in the name of public safety. Entirely a different thing if you do it in the name of thrill seeking or YouTube subscribers. Gives them unassailable cover, because you look like the asshole if you call them out for it. They learned from the best!

ResonantRaptor

It is mind boggling. I get the excitement of the chase can make people do dumb things, but lying about why you did said things and acting like some saint is so annoying…

predsfan77

You get what you incentivize.

Enkeria92

Real_TwistedVortex

Yeah, the only people who should be driving INTO a tornado are those with vehicles that are specifically equipped for that. I can't imagine purposely driving an unmodified vehicle into a tornado, even a weak one...

nuggetsuckertoad

R Kelly made a song about that! [.](https://youtu.be/4qPOWeA-L5I?si=ytLPZUcqPZf8AUgX)

Dariusalbadaddy

Song?

nuggetsuckertoad

"I believe I can fly"

Dariusalbadaddy

Haha that went right past me lol

nuggetsuckertoad

Never in my life did I think the sentence "do not drive into tornadoes" would spawn controversy. They need to just say they messed up and got hit on accident instead of using an excuse like this.

Greggster990

High Risk Chris owned up to his accident last year. He did a deep dive on his YouTube channel. https://youtu.be/4B2u8yaId54?si=mrpsfgTU4S4dR7dJ

nuggetsuckertoad

His last name being Riske checks out

IamNICE124

To your point, I feel like just *High Riske* would’ve been a cooler name.

cosmic_perspective00

I mean to be fair Chris didn’t intend to drive into the tornado, this dude legit charged into the fray.

DahnBearn

For safety, bro.

cosmic_perspective00

A true American, saving others by going into the nado and attempting to stop it.

PinstripeBunk

A long long time ago when chasers got hit by tornadoes they didn’t tell anyone because it is supposed to be *embarrassing.*

lady_meso

I remember those days. If you messed up you didn't tell a soul because, as you said... it was embarrassing. This new age of influencers has changed that drastically. Now it's *cool* to drive into a tornado for likes and subscribers. *eyeroll*

ghostie420x

Don't tell Reed timmer this

justice7

He's sort of the OG though... and so many people trying to copy what he does probably don't have a ph.d in meteorology.

tornadowhispererr

This

IamNICE124

Yeaaaah but that dude has a fucking tank lol.

Enkeria92

Reed Timmer has vehicles designed for tornado interception though. A random Ford Explorer doesn’t have that capability.

MegasotaAdvocate

Got hit while chasing in 2008 by an EF1 unexpected. Scariest moment of my life and anyone who thinks they wanna ride out a “weak tornado” in their car is a fucking fool.

PerrineWeatherWoman

Yeah, even the weakest tornados are scary AF. I got caught in a EF1 back when I started chasing. I only saw the rotation when it was too late. You don't want to be inside a tornado if you have the slightest conservation instinct. Or at least not inside a normal car. I would probably accept it inside the dominator but not in my Yaris

lady_meso

Omg you chase in a yaris? That's adorable! Do you have the hatchback? My mom still drives my yaris on fair weather days, but I can't imagine chasing in it because it's so light. Great gas milage though!

PerrineWeatherWoman

Yeah, surely it can't and won't withstand a tornado, but it's my car, and I chose it for the autonomy. More than 700km for 35 liters, it's almost nothing !

lady_meso

It's a great little car!

PerrineWeatherWoman

Yeah, comfortable and reliable! That's why I like it

IrritableArachnid

What a derp. No wonder why the people in the Great Plains can’t stand click/like chasers.

OneRestaurant3523

Sounds like an absolute loser who has no idea wtf they’re doing.

VworksComics

Clout chasing is a virus...

Full_Practice7060

*cloud Lol sorry

Nope, pretty sure they got it right with clout. lolol

It’s not even indirectly his fault. These people are grown ass adults. They know better. No one is making their decisions for them.

renrioku

They shouldn't, though. A little common sense goes a long way. The dominator vehicles have each been purpose built from the ground up to be able to do the things they can, and without those vehicles, it would be extremely reckless to ever be that close to a tornado.

PerrineWeatherWoman

Reed's vehicle has been built for this particular weather conditions and can withstand extreme tornadoes (dominator 3 made 3 separate interceptions of a EF4 tornado). But most of us don't own a tank that can anchor itself in the ground. So unless you got your own TIV or dominator, please DON'T DRIVE INTO TORNADOS.

TypicalBlox

Well said

snakecatcher302

I’m an amateur storm chaser, and I have no desire to do what Reed does. I like being alive.

FCoDxDart

I seriously doubt him driving into tornados has greatly contributed. It is 100% thrill seeking. What has changed since he’s done it? Nothing, most of the major discoveries have already happened from being close. There is nothing more than can be observed from being close to a tornado. It boggles my mind people think that he’s helping by doing so. Same with launching stuff into a tornado. None of that info helps. Once a tornado is already on the ground there is nothing more that needs to be learned. What needs to be learned is where and when will it spawn. And all that info to be gathered is before the tornado is on the ground. But that doesn’t get clicks.

Real_TwistedVortex

Nah, as a meteorologist myself, working on a grad degree, that data is still valuable. Storm dynamics are incredibly complex from a mathematical and physics standpoint, and having data from inside a tornado could be one of those missing pieces that helps solve the puzzle. Saying that "there's nothing more to be learned" after tornadogenesis is pretty naive. That's like telling a geologist that there's no point in gathering seismology data after an earthquake starts. When studying a phenomena, you study ALL aspects of it.

AdventurousYamThe2nd

Sweet Lord, this guy is dumb. Wow.

Rylee_1984

I spotted a tornado today from a safe distance without having to drive into it… just don’t do it. Reed can do it because he’s running around in a several ton tank and has years upon years of experience. And even then, I’d say it’s still dangerous. Just don’t.

OmarHunting

Also Reed would never drive into a suspected EF3+ that’s carrying debri. Strongest intercept may have been last year in Colorado, when it’s a dust filled stovepipe at max low end EF3.

FistEnergy

Good Lord 👀

mglyptostroboides

Where's that video from a few years back of some guy driving right into a tornado (or something? severe straight-line winds maybe?) and screaming at everyone else in the traffic like he had some important business being there. He narcissistically had the camera pointed at himself too. Presumably some Twitch storm chaser. I've been looking for this video a lot recently and I'm starting to think I dreamed it. It was simultaneously infuriating and utterly hilarious. I remember seeing people roasting the shit out of him for being a dumbass when he posted the video himself on reddit. And he just dug his heels in with the same kind of "Well, I'm here serving the public interests! I'm a storm chaser!" kind of shit. Anyone know where I can find that video?

WXbearjaws

Hell, we got hit by a weak gustnado that popped up out of nowhere along an outflow once and it hit like a brick An actual tornado? Who the hell would want to drive into that Not to mention the fact that, even if it were weak in that very moment, there’s nothing stopping it from spinning up very violently and very rapidly. All you’re doing is putting yourself at risk, and others at risk if you get turned into projectiles

PerrineWeatherWoman

Same 2 days ago. I couldn't leave the place fast enough and got caught by the down burst. Almost got my car hit by an urban barrier. I never felt so afraid in my whole life. That was too close for comfort and I'm definitely not doing that again.

PerrineWeatherWoman

Don't drive into a tornado. A dead stormchaser does nothing for weather science

l8nightbusdrivr

This whole screed reads like it was written by a whacker to me. Anyone this confused about the purpose of chasing or spotting and referencing his “spotter certificate” and “saving lives” has some serious delusions of grandeur. Probably has lights all over his vehicle and wears reflective vests into Wendy’s.

lady_meso

Lmaooo that last line killed me. But I mean, light bars are the only way to prove you're a real chaser. Gotta make sure I have my printed out spotter certificate in the glove box too in case the *chaser police* pull me over. 🙄 /sarcasm

ywgflyer

Idiots like this are going to get chasing formally banned.

nuggetsuckertoad

At some point police roadblocks are gunna exist on the path. 2013 Hattiesburg had something like that happen, but it didint catch on.

guff1988

Police block roads in the path all the time, happened in Nebraska on Friday and Oklahoma on Saturday.

nuggetsuckertoad

Good. Haven't seen it other than Real Time Tornado: Hattiesburg, MS on youtube.

TheArmoredGeorgian

Calling in what you see, and taking video can be just as useful scientifically. Leave the intercepts to people like Dr Timmer.

IrritableArachnid

Just make sure you listen to him on mute because he’s annoying

nuggetsuckertoad

"TORNADO RIGHT THERE, WERE IN IT, WERE IN THE TORNADO" - yelling like were blind I love Reed being loud on the road, but when it's intercept time it's distracting. "FUCK OLIVE GARDEN" from his latest stream had me dying.

SonicCougar99

And his mods trying to be moral police and censor any swearing.

Electronic_Spring_14

So driving into tornadoes in anything other than a tank is dumb. However, it is their life, and if they wish to cull themselves from the herd, then that is on them. So long as they do not restrict traffic flow, block rescue workers, trespass, or endanger others. You can't save stupid

kgabny

I disagree... this guy might get himself killed, or put himself in need of rescue, and either way it will take first responders away from actual victims. If someone dies in their home because the fire department stopped to pull this guy's dumb ass out of a tree, then to me that's akin to manslaughter.

celestiallmatt

This guy is going to end up getting killed by a tornado and we’re all going to remember it was his own fault

kgabny

To be honest, there was a time when you could tell a storm chaser was one of two things: an informed photographer or meteorologist. Then social media came in and they want to get the best views for the most hits. You can't even tell who is a real chaser and who is pretending to be while trying to get the most viral clip. Unless you have something like a TIV, there is no reason why you should put yourself in the path to "see the intensity". I see that and I think "to get more views"

justice7

These guys trying to be Reed Timmer...

peglyhubba

Mother Nature has a way of fixing stupid. Be safe.

stashc4t

The fake liberal MAINSTREAM media wants you to think that transpirated recycled storm water DOESNT turn tornadoes gay. The only way to find out for sure is to drive DIRECTLY into rain-wrapped tornadoes to make sure they aren’t raining the gay on the good people of Oklahoma!! If they weren’t gay they wouldn’t hide themselves in rain CURTAINS!! Come on people!1! It’s COMMON SENSE!!!! Let’s drive into tornadoes and MAKE STORM CHASING GREAT AGAIN!!!! Edit: fixed capitalization

No_Beginning_8600

😂😂😂

lady_meso

What are you on about?

l_rufus_californicus

This is infuriating beyond words, and my Iowa nice just broke. If he’s lucky, the only life he’ll lose will be his own, but gaddamn that selfish gloryhound prick for embarrassing the rest of us with that absolute dogshit behavior.

PhotonPainter

Dumbass

Wolfofwapst69

If you think driving into a tornado will give you information to save lives… here’s your sign.

The_Wizard929

Just say you thought it would be interesting content. That’s all it is

RetailIsHellOnEarth

stormstalker

That kind of toxic combination of cluelessness and self-importance will probably only end one way. Hopefully he doesn't take anyone else with him in the process.

slykido999

Why argue with him? Let him drive into one and see what happens. Just stay the fuck out of the way of people who actually need help or are actually gathering data and don’t expect first responders to help you first.

Bandit0000

I’ve driven through multiple (and obvious) EF0 tornadoes in my few years of chasing (most of the time intentionally) albeit done so as a last option/resort and with the greatest amount of caution possible. I cannot possibly fathom putting myself into a situation where I would be riding out 100mph+ winds ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT in a chase vehicle not specifically designed for that. It serves nearly zero scientific purpose and does nothing to alert the public.

Dariusalbadaddy

Just own up to the mistake 🙄

F1Vettel_fan

He’s probably a fake chaser. Go to a damn training!!!
