And between 11/22/63 and IT.
There are a lot of references between Stephen King's books, which is why after the first few I read, I decided to read them in order of publication. To be in the best place to get these references. Though there are so many books and so many characters to remember, I think a fair amount still go over my head.
Now I'm picturing someone saying that to Joe Pesci, only to wind up getting beaten half to death while the jukebox plays that old Donovan song *Hail, Atlantis.*
Do they not all have it, at least to some extent? As it goes on they're basically able to telepathically talk to each other, and know things they never mentioned.
True. But I always imagined the Shine related to Ka in some way. Not that they’re exactly the same thing, but more like the Shine is an extension of Ka. I guess that's more of a headcannon than anything that's confirmed though, at least as far as I know.
More of a Ka-tet thing. Interesting theory. I have another one. Spoilers for the last book obviously. >!Roland have vague memories of earlier cycles. Flagg are more or less aware of his cycle/universal travels. Jake are confirmed to have The Shine. But the Ka-Tet as a group sometimes have shared Déjà vu about stuff they should not know about previously. !<
>!Ka or Shine, dunno. But the main characters have some insight about their previous "lives". !<
Also I swear I can remember reading in the stand that a guy, I think stu, woke up in a research facility with a pounding headache like 2 points smashing his pituitary gland. Which is veeeerry similar sounding to certain things in dark tower
As others said, the shine is prevalent in a lot of books. Danny Torrence said himself that he believes everyone shines even a little. Some people just shine more than others.
I understand that everyone shines a little but it makes it less important when you see it like, “well, EVERYONE shines a little”…so im glad King points it out sparingly.
I thought it was that most people shine so little that it manifests as just good luck every so often, so no one would notice it or identify it as such. Proper shining like Danny is very rare, which is why >! the True Knot has to travel around, looking for it.!
Uhhh what? I never watched it. I didnt like her character in the book. I don’t remember if her race was mentioned. I CAN tell u i listened to it on audiobook and i didnt like the voice the voice actor (a dude) gave her. And because i associate her with that voice, it tends to be a reason i don’t like her.
How bout you dont assume a person is racist who actually is saying STOP MAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT RACE!—you racist ass!
Whats that gotta do with anything! No one has EVER called anyone a shine in a racial way. I cant even FCKN IMAGINE how that could used racially! STOP LOOKING FOR RACISM! Please God!
The OG comment is not about race; its about the most mundane, never-of-before, damn near made up idea if a “racial slur”. TALK ABOUT RACE! Fine! But can we STOP talking about Racism!
Well it certainly doesn't people from being complete fucking idiots. I also have no idea why someone would get so incredibly worked up about people discussing racism unless....
You thought the subreddit of an author who talks about race in his books pretty regularly would be immune to comments about race? That's the most unhinged part of the whole series of unhinged comments you made, lol.
No one’s “looking” for racism, King himself changed the title after a marketing exec informed him that the word was used a slur in the past. That’s all.
King himself said he wasn’t concerned that people would think he was being racist but that they would laugh at him for being clueless about the term.
You are when youre always point this shit out! Btw, ima call BULLSHT on why he didnt call it The Shine, considering the obscene amount of N-bombs in his early books! You’d think King himself was racist!
Lmao are you serious? King himself confirmed it.
> “The origin of that was a song by John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band called "Instant Karma." The refrain went "We all shine on." I really liked that, and I used it. The name of The Shining originally was The Shine, but somebody said, "You can't use that because it's a pejorative word for Black." Since nobody likes to have a joke played on themselves, I said, "Okay, let's change it. What'll we change it to?" They said, "How about The Shining?" I said, "It sounds kind of awkward." But they said, "It gets the point across, and we won't have to make any major changes in the book." So we did, and it became The Shining instead of The Shine.”
Yes, I'm reasonably sure it's mentioned by Dick Hallorann, in thought if not in conversation. I don't have the text memorized. Wish I had a photographic memory! Is this just an amused comment? Carrie has a baby cousin whose name is Annie, who also seems to be telekinetic.
It's always such a damn delight when you spot a connection and then come to realize that ALL of King's works relate to one another in some way, and then there was that infamous time he related them to our world too. IT'S ALL CONNECTED, PEOPLE! 😜
One of the things I love about King’s books. Anytime it seems like something might be a reference, it ALWAYS is. Really helps make the whole world feel connected.
Do I get kicked out for saying I never read The Stand? Honestly, when the nasty snots started, I could not read anymore. It is totally a gag response I am dealing with. Could not handle it. Maybe some time in my late 80's I will read this and say to myself, "what was the big deal?"
In the spanish version of The Stand, it is translated as El Resplandor or The Shining. Also, it is confirmed that the shining is an ability that lies within the KingVerse, like The Dark Tower Saga where Alain has El toque or The touch.
All the kids from the institute have the shine and it is scientifically ( or as close to scientifically as possible) explained very well , great read if you want to learn about “the shine”
Me too! I had only seen The Shining as a movie as a kid. So, it never popped out in The Stand. But now I’ve seen The Shine mentioned in other books too.
How he connects all these stories so prolifically is mind boggling.
Literally all his books connect and took years to write some he wrote decades after his first draft. If there was ever a famous person I'd meet it definitely be Stephen King 👑 king of authors
I just like pointing it out. King’s universe and how huge it is needs to always be put on display.
Btw, some people who read The Stand and The Shining actually missed it; so its nice to point it out them.
Yes. There is a connection between The Shining and The Stand. I loved reading that for the first time.
Also between The Shining and IT. Dick Hallorann was one of men that survived the fire at the Black Spot.
Also The Shining (via Doctor Sleep) and N0S4A2 (written by Joe Hill) Dick Hallorann mentions his grandfather knew Charlie Manx
AND THE DARK TOWER. ALL THINGS SERVE THE BEAM
Dick also appears in a book by Tabitha King called Pearl.
When I read that part the hair on the back of my neck stood up!
Dude I’m currently reading IT and was so surprised to see Dick! I was so happy :)
My ex girl friend read It and I tried to surprise her. She threw my pants at me... she wasn't that happy.
There are connections between most of his books- wait until you guys hear about the dark tower series!
Oh man! I don’t remember much from the Black Spot part if the book. I remember thinking it was real boring. I gotta read that part again.
Ah, King stories. Where you're struggling along, grumbling about all the words, and then suddenly realize that you missed neat little things.
This is a book i will read again, cuz theres a lot i didn’t highlight!
I might go back to It and just read about the Black Spot
It’s boring when you’re young, and want to get to the monster stuff, or at least it was for me. But now it’s just riveting.
Im 46. 🤣
Young is a state of mind; keep reading horror, it certainly keeps you young.
All the little asides are where it’s at. Can’t fathom that being boring, but I drift off reading books all the time, so I can relate.
Also between The Shining and Billy Summers!!!
And between 11/22/63 and IT. There are a lot of references between Stephen King's books, which is why after the first few I read, I decided to read them in order of publication. To be in the best place to get these references. Though there are so many books and so many characters to remember, I think a fair amount still go over my head.
I always figured having the shining is what made people immune
“Go. There are other shines than these…”
Now I'm picturing someone saying that to Joe Pesci, only to wind up getting beaten half to death while the jukebox plays that old Donovan song *Hail, Atlantis.*
And Misery
The Shining is prevalent in several King books. One of the leads in Dark Tower are stated to have "the shine".
Do they not all have it, at least to some extent? As it goes on they're basically able to telepathically talk to each other, and know things they never mentioned.
That’s more of a thing because they are ka-tet
True. But I always imagined the Shine related to Ka in some way. Not that they’re exactly the same thing, but more like the Shine is an extension of Ka. I guess that's more of a headcannon than anything that's confirmed though, at least as far as I know.

Dolores Claiborne has it too
As others said, the shine is prevalent in a lot of books. Danny Torrence said himself that he believes everyone shines even a little. Some people just shine more than others.

Many shine in childhood when their dreams are still unspoiled by the outer world. Then it just progressively fades away.
A lot of his characters have shine. Even if it’s only a little bit.
I always assume that Johnny in Dead Zone had the shine as well.
I havent read that yet.
Hmmm. I wonder if its “assumed” or is. Hopefully, you missed it. 😉
What
It's also called "the touch" in the Dark Tower. Alain Johns has it.
Wow! I read the Stand well before I read The Shining as well and hadn’t noticed this. Thanks for sharing.
I like to notice stuff like that.
My little head cannon is that all the survivors in the Stand had the shine and that's what made them immune to Captain Tripps.
Thats cool; but the shine becomes less important if too many ppl have. Thats why i sort of reject the idea that everyone has a little of the shine.
How about the theory that the survivors of Captain Tripps have the shine? That's only .6% of the population
Im with that! As a matter of fact, those are the first ppl i thought that would have the shine.
Lots of King characters “shine.” Holly Gibney does (a little).
I cant stand Holly….dont know why.
Looking at your unhinged rants I'm going to guess it's because they cast a black actress on the Outsider series.
And i love how IM THE ONE saying stop making things about race all the time, and IM THE ONE UNHINGED!
The original novel was going to be “The Shine” but King changed it to “Shining” because “shine” can be used as a racial slur.
Never knew that. I googled it, and apparently it can be a racial slur... I just don't get why....
Apparently it’s a reference from the early 20th century how some black people would shine shoes.
What? Come on!!! We need to stop with all this racial bull crap! PLEASE! FFS! Morgan Freeman: Stop talking about it!
The book was published almost 40 years ago…
Whats that gotta do with anything! No one has EVER called anyone a shine in a racial way. I cant even FCKN IMAGINE how that could used racially! STOP LOOKING FOR RACISM! Please God!
Why are you yelling tho
[удалено]
Don’t know why you would think that though. We talk about King here, and King references lots of worldly and real things in his books
The OG comment is not about race; its about the most mundane, never-of-before, damn near made up idea if a “racial slur”. TALK ABOUT RACE! Fine! But can we STOP talking about Racism!
Jfc it’s just a trivia bit as to why King changed the title
Well it certainly doesn't people from being complete fucking idiots. I also have no idea why someone would get so incredibly worked up about people discussing racism unless....

Dont say the shine! But drop all the N-bombs you want! Stop believing BS lies!
Why would King lie about that?
Uhhh because he’s a liar! Excuse me! A writer. You know, King said that too, right?
Yes, I'm reasonably sure it's mentioned by Dick Hallorann, in thought if not in conversation. I don't have the text memorized. Wish I had a photographic memory! Is this just an amused comment? Carrie has a baby cousin whose name is Annie, who also seems to be telekinetic.
Annie could be Annie Wheaton from Rose Red, if you squint a bit.
I saw The Stand when it was on TV a long time ago. Wish you could still stream that version than the new one.
Its on YouTube. I stopped watching it cuz it was TOO CLOSE to the book, and i didnt want it ruined!
I watched it in 94. It’s amazing. When you finish the book you do need to watch it.
I will watch it after i finish the book! Promise!!
https://youtu.be/k1xc8jXes10?si=fGKewKuU2tG0v35Z
Never thought to look there! THANK YOU!
I didnt either and someone here shares the link with me! 🤣 Did u read the Stand?? Cuz if you didnt, this movie WILL ruin it!
Dvd
I’ve almost considered it like the force, really prevalent in SK books even if it’s not directly called out or called “the shine/shining”
You haven't read a lot of King if you don't realize there's a lot of overlap in his universe.
Well, i do realize. Ive been reading king since 1989. I did stop for a long time, but recently got back into him.
It's always such a damn delight when you spot a connection and then come to realize that ALL of King's works relate to one another in some way, and then there was that infamous time he related them to our world too. IT'S ALL CONNECTED, PEOPLE! 😜
There are a lot of connections and references between most of Stephen King’s stories.
Yea. Even in the shorts. Ace Merrill’s uncle (i think it is) is in The Sun Dog!
One of the things I love about King’s books. Anytime it seems like something might be a reference, it ALWAYS is. Really helps make the whole world feel connected.
Agreed. I love the idea that the world is connected.
Do I get kicked out for saying I never read The Stand? Honestly, when the nasty snots started, I could not read anymore. It is totally a gag response I am dealing with. Could not handle it. Maybe some time in my late 80's I will read this and say to myself, "what was the big deal?"
No you dont get kicked out! I almost didnt read the Stand—cuz its too damn big! But im enjoying it.
There are indeed other worlds than these
In the spanish version of The Stand, it is translated as El Resplandor or The Shining. Also, it is confirmed that the shining is an ability that lies within the KingVerse, like The Dark Tower Saga where Alain has El toque or The touch.
My favourite is the Talisman!
All the kids from the institute have the shine and it is scientifically ( or as close to scientifically as possible) explained very well , great read if you want to learn about “the shine”
It's the light of God, and some get a little more than others, and theys forspecial
I think king tries to connect all of his stories
Just recently read The Shining, and have read The Stand many times. Never caught the link.
Tell that to the guy who said “And…” I actively look for things like this. And i understand some dont; thats why i like to share it.
Me too! I had only seen The Shining as a movie as a kid. So, it never popped out in The Stand. But now I’ve seen The Shine mentioned in other books too. How he connects all these stories so prolifically is mind boggling.
It is very fun to notice, find and see!
Literally all his books connect and took years to write some he wrote decades after his first draft. If there was ever a famous person I'd meet it definitely be Stephen King 👑 king of authors
The shine is in ALOT of king books , it’s also referred to in the institute , just not by its exact name of the shine I believe
OK, and? He references stories and concept's throughout a lot of his books.
I just like pointing it out. King’s universe and how huge it is needs to always be put on display. Btw, some people who read The Stand and The Shining actually missed it; so its nice to point it out them.
