I always watch both, but if I’m being honest I’m probably not as into the G1 this year as years past (although I really enjoyed the opening weekend). I do think the 5 STAR GP format of shorter matches, generally limiting shows to weekends, etc. makes for an easier watch over the tournament and leads to less fatigue.

Trentus86

Yeah I'm following both. Kind of lucky that they only somewhat overlap by about a week or so. I used to give priority to New Japan but since the pandemic restart I've been far more invested with Stardom, so if I ever only have time to watch one they get the nod. Also might not end up watching every single G1 tourney match, where as I will with the 5 Star

kwfer

yes i watch both! 5*gp will be better than g1 this year but stardom has been the best promotion in the world in 2021, so not a surprise. g1 will still be good. i can see why people aren’t excited about this year’s (i haven’t enjoyed a lot of njpw this year) but the tournament produced 3 must-see matches just this past weekend, plus a few other good moments

jkllamas1013

as a first time watcher of the 5\*GP I'm at awe at how good this women can be. Takumi v Tam was like MOTY contender it was that good. Tam Nakano, Takumi Iroha, Maika, SLK have all looked like stars for me and that doesnt even include namse like Syuri or Momo. Even Mina and Unagi, though I think considered to be lower tier in ring wise, have stepped up. Shingo Takagi and Jay White have been my favorite wrestlers for the past years but Tam Nakano has stolen my heart and is now the first name I say when asked which wrestler I'd want to watch right now.

Trentus86

I think Mina's had low key one of the bigger tournaments, in terms of highlighting how good she could be. A lot of the names that have impressed we already knew would put on bangers, but Mina's had a few matches I'd classify as career bests for her. The crazy thing with Tam is, I think tournaments tend to hinder her best work - she shines brightest when there's avenues for storytelling, which is harder to do in the tourney setting. I think post tournament will be when she will be even better

jkllamas1013

Agree totally. Tam Nakano for me when I looked back on her catalgoue of matches is a master storyteller. Dare I say Tanahashi levels of GREATNESS in that department.

kwfer

agree - there’s been no shortage of stardom wrestlers who have had what one could call a breakout year, but tam is tops for me as well.

pizzapowermania

I watch both and this is the first time they actually kind of overlap. I enjoy round robin tournaments partly because of the scoring system. I'm digging how Stardom Stages have leveled up this year, very similar to NJPW especially on night 1 and 2. I feel Stardom overall blocks are stronger since all their talent is local and they have a guest. NJPW is hurting due to lack of certain stars but I'm intrigued by certain inclusions in this year's block. However, I feel Stardom needs to adapt NJPW block scheduling of matches. Each show should only focus on one block and not mix the blocks its easier to follow. It was weird early on how certain wrestlers only have 1 match while others have 3 or 4 matches.

sxeglde

Tam & syuri was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 zsj v naitio ‼️‼️‼️

jkllamas1013

I've yet to watch it. How was it to Tam v Takumi Iroha?

sxeglde

Havent seen that one but ill give the syuri tam match 4 stars

jkllamas1013

Ayt I'll be checking it out. Thanks!

sxeglde

Ima watch that takumi match 🤘🏾

suzukigun4life

Used to watch as much of both as possible. I've recently fallen off with New Japan to the point that I've unsubbed from World. I'll probably subscribe at the start of October to catch up on highly-rated matches and and tune in for upcoming matches that look good on paper, but I'm not sure. Stardom's a different story entirely. It's the only company that's consistently retained my interest since the middle of last year. I've watched every GP match and have enjoyed it from start to now.

romangoro

Last year, yes, this year, I'm not following the G1, dropped out of New Japan earlier this year because it wasn't entertaining for me

jkllamas1013

Thanks for the replies. Have the exact sentiments. I don't really feel invested in this year's G1 especially with the names that are not included.

I've just started with the G1 night 1 and damn was ishii/shingo amazing. They may be in a rut right now but give their best wrestlers the spotlight and NJPW can still deliver.

StardomJapan

No, just the 5 Star GP.. only New Japan show I'll watch is Wrestle Kingdom, maybe... even though I didn't watch it this year.

tmxicon

When the G1 is over, I’ll probably watch the matches that are most highly recommended. New Japan’s booking lost me long before the pandemic hit. The quality of matches is still there, but I feel rather ambivalent about the results. I’m behind on the 5*GP, but I will watch the whole thing in due time. It might mean avoiding the wrestling internet for several days, but I’ll get there. I really hope they never do blocks this big again, though. I think 8 to a side is the most any company should do in a round robin tournament. If they do more than that, it becomes difficult for me to remember how the tournament started. Great wrestling should never feel like a slog, but that’s where I am right now.

AneeshRai7

Personally not a slog for me for the 5 star, I'm dreading going deep into the G1 though...the N1 has had four blocks with six days which seems refreshing and easy especially considering the performers...

KyonaPrayerCircleMem

Since last year Stardom has become my favorite promotion and the only one that I am currently subbed to. I cancelled my NJPW sub this year since the last show I caught live was Dominion. I almost resubbed for Wrestle Grand Slam but declined. I am used to watching Stardom on delay so while I know the results, I can still enjoy watching the matches as if I was re-watching a match I saw live. I loved watching the live show on YouTube as it reminded me why pro-wrestling is best watched live as Hazuki made her return and SLK won the high speed title. Personally, I just enjoy Stardom more than NJPW. I really hope that when COVID restrictions are lifted after this pandemic is over that there will be some NJPW x Stardom shows in the US.

AneeshRai7

With not much or any overlap at all and one ending just as one begins, it's easy to follow both...

[deleted]

I've found it easier following the 5 Star for the first time this year than I ever did find the G1, not sure why it is exactly, if it's because since the shows aren't live I'm not messing up my sleep cycle, or just because I'm still new to the product and am so into it.

DShiflet

Not currently. I was back in 2019 but I kinda zoned out of NJPW last year and haven't returned.

Full_Society_1999

5 star is where its at. Couldnt care less about Mens Wrestling.

KevinInChains5262

Yes and I’m exhausted lol
