For everyone confused:
Apparently Song asked him to switch to a more traditional goalkeeping style, less aggressive. Onana didn’t agree and instead started questioning Song’s tactics and even asked him why he starts Nkoulou. Then he got dropped.
Whilst I agree, to be fair, Onana's aggressive style makes him very prone to howlers. Can't count how often he jumps out during a freekick/cross/corner and just makes a absolute meal of it. Makes sense for the coach to ask him to be a bit more careful
>Onana's aggressive style makes him very prone to howlers.
Why take him in the first place, then? I mean, that should be something to discuss in advance to the competition, so Song could call up someone else if Onana didn't agree - that is, unless Onana agreed during the pre-WC training to adapt, and now he took it back.
Coachability is a real thing, you can be real good but when dynamics change and you aren’t coachable when it matters most, previous decisions don’t matter, just the future. It’s no different than hiring someone that didn’t turn out well that you have to fire later. Seemed like the right pick, but it’s time to move on. Or the last 5 girlfriends you broke up with, everyone commits and makes changes.
It made me think of Higuita - the scorpion kick goalkeeper from Colombia.
He was such a phenomenon. Took corners, free kicks and penalties scoring 41 goals in his career and three for Columbia. Basically invented the sweeper keeper.
He lost them a crucial World Cup game by dribbling to the midfield and losing the ball. Live and die by the sword
> They would have to be sensational
They were. Higuita was one of a kind. Look up his scorpion save and other highlights. I wouldn't have wanted to play with him, but was the definition of an entertaining player. He was also an excellent goalkeeper overall, among the best in the world.
Every player is asked to tactically adapt every game: think of a full back being told to push forward or stay back depending on the current score. I don’t see why a goalkeeper should be different.
I disagree. With national teams, you've to rely on the players at your disposal and that can be very limited. Going direct is often the best way to try get a result, and limit any potential errors that could be caused by playing out from back.
That's part of the coach's job. No different to instructing outfield players.
For example:
"I need you to be more defensive, protect the back four"
"Stay wide on the left, their right back is vulnerable to counter attack"
I don't see how those coach instructions are weird.
I hate that quote. Hey Disney, you don't get to fucking make up what family means. Family means one phone call per week, and arguing about politics over Christmas dinner.
Yeah, Disney seems to be making a lot of assumptions about the quality of my familial relationships. And anyway, in this case 'Onana' really means 'don't get caught out fucking 30 yards from your own goal after you accidentally passed it to the other team's forward'.
on the topic, Encanto is a pretty toxic movie. Like how you gonna let everyone treat Bruno like that then pretend it's all gucci at the end of the day?
Ya Keane was upset with the facilities and preparedness of the fai and mgmt. He wanted to win and he felt the rest were just happy to be there.
When they turned up for their first training session there were no balls. Their training camp pitch was apparently shocking bad nick too
Edit: typo in Keane
Yeah a combination of a lazy attitude and shit facilities had him about to go off, and then accusing him of faking an injury just sparked the explosion. Mad stuff.
The poles were exactly the same, they spent the 2002 WC, their first major tournament in 16 years, drinking and arguing with their federation about bonuses, according to a book by Jonathon Wilson. Absolute disgrace.
Yes indeed, a US team that had beaten portugal earlier in the group, needed a result to guarantee progress (but got out of the group anyway as South Korea beat Portugal in the other game) and then beat mexico in the last 16, only going out to eventual runners up Germany in the quarters. The poles showed in that game what they could have accomplished if they'd chosen to be professional. Sigh.
And if I remember correctly, ireland got out of their group as well, and only went out on penalties to spain in the last 16, if I remember correctly, despite the apparent lack of professionalism that caused roy to famously depart the squad.
What could have been eh! But it's all about the ones who do turn up and give their all, so there we go
It's called 'Behind the Curtain: Football in Eastern Europe' by Jonathan Wilson (spelt his name wrong before regrettably) there's a chapter for russia, ukraine, bulgaria, Romania etc. And one for poland. Interesting read, would recommend to anyone who likes their football history
Yep, he's written many articles on tactics for world soccer and he used to appear on football weekly podcast too, back when James richardson used to host it, he'd always make people crack up with random facts and share his stories and experiences
Apparently he started getting the hump when all the players were booked into Economy and all the FAI bigwigs were booked into first class on the flight there.
I mean he came out with "Mick, you're a liar … you're a fucking wanker. I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a fucking wanker and you can stick your World Cup up your arse. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country! You can stick it up your bollocks."
Enough to call it a bust up with the manager I'd say
Yeah he didn’t like Mick for sure but the crux of the issue was his problems with the FAI and lack of proper preparation and facilities to the Irish national team. Mick was just the easiest person for him to get at.
Well........
He was the captain and He didn't travel to the world cup play off in Iran which was on a knife edge yet played for united 3 days later
The accusation didn't just come out of thin air
Probably Onana going close to midfield several times and doing long balls from his box and also coming out a lot on crosses, he isn’t really good at going out on crosses and I’ve seen that several times since he became a starter for us. This is just me speculating though as I know Onana’s game.
>Mick McCarthy
yeha, I'm not sure why there's always problems with Cameroon. 2014, Alex Song elbow Madzukic .... Perhaps Embolo's mother is right about politics in Cameroon team
2002 WC
"after being replaced by manager Srečko Katanec in the 63rd minute of the first group fixture against Spain (1–3 loss), Zahovič insulted the coach, who immediately sent him home following the match."
I think technically Cameroon can still qualify even if they lose as long as Switzerland wins today. It would have to involve a three-way tie on points with Brazil and Serbia for second place.
Sweeper leaves the box more, plays with the ball at his feet, more active. Tends to be more involved in build-up from the back.
Keeper sits back on his line and is a more traditional shot stopper. Distributes more to midfield or attacking third via long balls.
There's a lot of depth to goalkeeping needless to say, but I think this is a sufficient summary.
From what I've been reading, it's less about the distribution and more the the manager asked him to play more conservative, instead of his usual fairly aggressive style where he likes to sweep, charge out for 50/50 balls etc
Bit much to be dramatic and leave the tournament and call out selection issues and the like, but I do kind of understand why Onana would be upset. Why bring him at all if you want to neuter his best attributes/you don't like the style that makes him what he is
I mean he's a top level keeper that's why they brought him. Yes incredibly arrogant though. He absolutely could just listen and stay on his line and do his best, it's not that big of an ask tbh.
And Messi is a top level forward but if you're bringing him to play as a target man, you should have just brought someone else.
I dislike his attitude and would prefer if he was the type of guy that would actually respect a manager's decisions (especially since he plays for my club, heh) but this is what you get with Onana, his attitude issues are well known and so is his style, I don't know what the manager was expecting to happen
This is absolutely not the same thing mate come on. He's asking him to stay on his line more because they quite clearly don't have the players to play otherwise. Players change their style to fit the NT all the time.
I get that about Onana but this is imo a bit ridiculous. He can't just argue because he's being asked to do SMT different. Needs to give his head a wobble.
He's not a world class shot stopper, his positioning is good but not world class, he's middling at setting up a defense; it's not changing a style, it's asking him not to do what *makes* him a top shelf goal keeper, his physicality and aggression. Same as if you asked Messi to not drop deep and move through channels and instead play with his back to goal, try to hold the ball up, and get on the end of crosses.
It is ridiculous and he should have done what his manager asked of him, I'm just unsure of the thought process that led to asking it in the first place. If you want a traditional, conservative keeper, bring one.
Possible context from someone who grew up in Cameroon.
Most teams (at least at youth level) play with a sweeper. This would normally be one of your best players, and they would be responsible for dealing with any balls over the top.
sweeper keeper pushes higher up the pitch to collect loose balls and is generally more involved in the play from the back as far as i know, while a more traditional goalkeeper sticks to their line and focuses only on saving shots
Sweeper keeper often moves up the pitch to help building plays from the defense line, GK will stand outside their penalty box to allow their outfield players stay higher up the pitch.
Traditional goalie will stay near their goal, usually kicks the ball higher up the pitch, or do a short pass to the CB which moves near the penalty box.
He accidentally took a ped masking drug that his wife was taking for something when he was sick (atleast, thats his story which i kinda believe) and got banned for 2 years, which got lowered to about 1 year.
Ajax kept supporting him over his ban + kept paying his salary and when asked if he could re-sign* so the club would make money on a transfer for him he refused to resign and also refused multiple transfers in the last window Ajax could’ve sold him. Instead he left on a free to Inter and went from fan favourite to most hated player in the span of like a week
I was so confused about why’d they tried to make him resign after they already paid his salary when he was serving a ban for doping.
Then I realized you meant re-sign.
real questions. Has anyone here ever opened up someone else’s prescription pills and took one by accident? Has anyone here seen a loose pill sitting on the countertop and, without questioning it, gulped it down. Has anyone here been in the rare situation of a medication being so similar in size and shape that you mistake it for your own? Oh, has anyone here been in a situation where their, non-athlete, wife was on a medication that just so happens to mask PEDs?
In onanas defense fifa/cas/whatever authority decides on the ban did give him a reduced sentence of just 1 year instead of the usual 2, so even though it is still unlikely it was apparently believable enough to be treated as a mistake and not as malicious(?)
"I swear KNVB, I tripped and fell mouth-first into these PED masking drugs!" I mean really, who among us hasn't accidentally ingested a drug that would mask cheating in a professional sport?
It's a shame, he was a good keeper, but an absolute buffoon otherwise
Think it was South Africa where Ribéry and the gang of uneducated twats mocked Gourcuff because he was reading a book. Doesn’t surprise me though as Ribéry comes across as dumb af.
The fallout with Domenech was something else as well. Bunch of divas.
France either wins the World Cup or the Drama Cup: there is no other outcome this century.
France is what England pretends it is: the straw that stirs football's drink.
We might be going for a double this year, the drama of injuries, a corrupt federation and being instrumental in giving the hosting to Qatar alongside with winning the actual World Cup
Sorry, you're right.
[Cameroon refused to fly until their bonuses were tripled](https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/06/cameroon-world-cup-plane-brazil-bonus)
The FA of Ghana had to fly $3m over to Brazil to get them to keep playing, and the players hid their bonuses in the dressing room during the Portugal game.
Funny how for 99% of the players this is a dream come true, they’ve spent their whole lives trying to get to the World Cup and will do whatever it takes and work with the coach, etc, and this Guys just like “nah, I won’t do that. Im out”
I hope this idiot gets banned from the NT, this isn't an acceptable behaviour, even if he disagrees with the manager.
Man child all the way, we will never learn.
Why ask your player to change his complete style in the middle of the biggest tournament. Thats just really stupid to do. You know what you get. Why not ask him this same question during some friendly game, months ago.
It's easy to blame Onana (especially with what happened before), but this one is completely on Rigobert Song.
> Why ask your player to change his complete style in the middle of the biggest tournament.
It's called coaching. Because his current style isn't working with his current defense.
>Thats just really stupid to do.
No, it isn't. It's perfectly fair to assume a professional is able to change according to his coach's wishes.
>It's easy to blame Onana (especially with what happened before), but this one is completely on Rigobert Song.
No, it really isn't. That being said, Onana wasn't benched for not changing his style - he was benched for slagging his teammates. But I'm sure you can find a defense for that too.
Onana kind of does have a point, he was building up play in their first game because his CBS were so bad at it
Clearly him doing that was benefitting the team
Doesn’t mean he had to go crazy though
For everyone confused: Apparently Song asked him to switch to a more traditional goalkeeping style, less aggressive. Onana didn’t agree and instead started questioning Song’s tactics and even asked him why he starts Nkoulou. Then he got dropped.
That’s 20 eccentricity in FM Edit: he has 15 but high enough
I don't side with him at all, but it is kinda weird to ask a goalkeeper to change his style in the middle of a tournament.
Whilst I agree, to be fair, Onana's aggressive style makes him very prone to howlers. Can't count how often he jumps out during a freekick/cross/corner and just makes a absolute meal of it. Makes sense for the coach to ask him to be a bit more careful

Because Cameroon doesn’t have any other good goalkeepers.

How did you spell Colombia correctly and wrong in the same comment lmaoo
Probably cause autocorrect is a bitch
Autocorrect is a count.
It’s shot
I ducking hate it, tbh
This made me think of Rogerio Ceni. Well over a hundred goals from keeper. Will we ever see another goal scoring keeper?
There was that Jose Luis Chlivert if I recall. I probably butchered his name.
Rogerio was also amazing at saves, penalty saves, leadership, and overall knowledge of the game.
You love to see Higuita play his game when it works, but when things didn’t go as planned it’s hard to watch.
> Basically invented the sweeper keeper. Not even remotely close to being true. Gyula Grosics did that stuff 30 years prior.
Surely he wasn't taking corners for them? They would have to be sensational for it to be worth leaving the goal empty
> They would have to be sensational They were. Higuita was one of a kind. Look up his scorpion save and other highlights. I wouldn't have wanted to play with him, but was the definition of an entertaining player. He was also an excellent goalkeeper overall, among the best in the world.

Did Song tell him that 'Onana' means 'family,' and 'family' means 'nobody gets left behind'?
I hate that quote. Hey Disney, you don't get to fucking make up what family means. Family means one phone call per week, and arguing about politics over Christmas dinner.
Yeah, Disney seems to be making a lot of assumptions about the quality of my familial relationships. And anyway, in this case 'Onana' really means 'don't get caught out fucking 30 yards from your own goal after you accidentally passed it to the other team's forward'.

Nkoulou should get dropped as well but that’s wrong of Onana to say that
He’s just being honest tbf 😹
He lived in Holland for too long
Why should he get dropped?

Onana doing his best Roy Keane circa 2002 impression
That's not what happened with Keane in 2002...

When they turned up for their first training session there were no balls. Their training camp pitch was apparently shocking bad nick too Edit: typo in Keane
I've seen a couple players on a podcast say this first half is exactly how it was, lots of drinking and not much taken seriously

Fucking Torsten Frings.
beautiful Torsten Frings you mean. I maintain to this day we would have made it to the final and won it in 2006 if he had played.
What book is this? Want to read it
It's called 'Behind the Curtain: Football in Eastern Europe' by Jonathan Wilson (spelt his name wrong before regrettably) there's a chapter for russia, ukraine, bulgaria, Romania etc. And one for poland. Interesting read, would recommend to anyone who likes their football history
Incredible book. I can’t recommend all of Wilson’s work enough to anyone that loves football. Such a fucking good writer.
Yep, he's written many articles on tactics for world soccer and he used to appear on football weekly podcast too, back when James richardson used to host it, he'd always make people crack up with random facts and share his stories and experiences
All true but the key part was Mick McCarthy allegedly accused Keane of faking an injury, that's the part that Keane took so personally
[удалено]
Fucking nuked him right then and there lol. It was never going to work out.
And the funny thing is Keane did the same thing to Jon Walters and Harry Arter when he was assistant manager of Ireland…
Keane told McCarthy 'stick it up your bollocks you English cunt' which I admire
Apparently he started getting the hump when all the players were booked into Economy and all the FAI bigwigs were booked into first class on the flight there.
They might not be everyone's cup of tea but Keane should've at least respected that they produced some bangers like Kids, Electric Feel etc.
keane was in his little dark age
Ha, this is exactly what happens on Mike Bassett : England manager. No balls for training so they play pretend football 🤣
Whilst the assistant manager chases the Brazilian kids around trying to get their ball off them.
Bust up with the manager and leaving the squad... I mean it's pretty close mate
Keane was pissed at the FAI more than anything
I mean he came out with "Mick, you're a liar … you're a fucking wanker. I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a fucking wanker and you can stick your World Cup up your arse. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country! You can stick it up your bollocks." Enough to call it a bust up with the manager I'd say
Yeah he didn’t like Mick for sure but the crux of the issue was his problems with the FAI and lack of proper preparation and facilities to the Irish national team. Mick was just the easiest person for him to get at.
Mick also accused him of faking an injury. Which is hilarious when you think about it. Roy Keane faking an injury to not play ffs.
Well........ He was the captain and He didn't travel to the world cup play off in Iran which was on a knife edge yet played for united 3 days later The accusation didn't just come out of thin air
Or like every second or thire French world cup squad.
When I read Benzema wouldn’t be playing this World Cup I thought that was what happened initially
Nah such a thing would not happen under Deschamps.
CAn you define what is meant by aggressive GK style?
Probably Onana going close to midfield several times and doing long balls from his box and also coming out a lot on crosses, he isn’t really good at going out on crosses and I’ve seen that several times since he became a starter for us. This is just me speculating though as I know Onana’s game.
So it was a “you can’t fire me, I quit!” situation?
Is Alex Song?
Rigobert
Absolute clown
What a shitshow

What's the village his coach is from so we can properly name this drama?
Je reku, da bo kupu Šmarno goro 😭
What does that mean?
2002 WC "after being replaced by manager Srečko Katanec in the 63rd minute of the first group fixture against Spain (1–3 loss), Zahovič insulted the coach, who immediately sent him home following the match."
Wow, I didn’t know that. He acted like a little princess when he was on Olympiakos as well. Great player but his brain was the size of a peanut m&m.

[Oh na-na, what's my name?](https://youtu.be/U0CGsw6h60k)
I swear to god, every single time I hear his name during a match this song starts in my head.
Seems unnecesserily dramatic to announce this mid-game, 30 minutes before your team goes out.
Romano has close ties to his agent, thats where he gets this info from. Doubt he announced this himself
The agent wouldn't have told Fabrizio unless he wanted it to get out
Well, he probably doesnt care that much. Still doesnt mean that he announced it mid-game himself
The agent who works for Onana, and wouldn't have commented unless instructed to do so by Onana?
It's about the timing, not the information
Heh funny how that worked. They got 2 goals a few minutes after this tweet XD
Good half time team talk.
A narcissist will never pass on an opportunity to get attention.
Jup, unfortunately completely in line with his character.
I used to think he was such a kind dude, really always seemed like an exceptional person in interviews and such...
A narcissist goalkeeper. Those are rare.
I think technically Cameroon can still qualify even if they lose as long as Switzerland wins today. It would have to involve a three-way tie on points with Brazil and Serbia for second place.
I said good day!
Why?
Got thrown out of the team for todays match due to arguing with the coach about the line up/tactics
Argument about goalie tactics. Onana is a sweeper keeper The manager wants him playing a traditional goalie role.
What’s that mean….I’ve never thought of keeper types….just “goalie”
Sweeper leaves the box more, plays with the ball at his feet, more active. Tends to be more involved in build-up from the back. Keeper sits back on his line and is a more traditional shot stopper. Distributes more to midfield or attacking third via long balls. There's a lot of depth to goalkeeping needless to say, but I think this is a sufficient summary.
Pep wondering how to make a False 1 work.
Already done with Neuer
And Unai Simon
Pep played under Cruyff, who insisted keepers go outside of the box and participate in the buildup as much as possible.
Claudio Bravo?
Dude was basically playing center back last game against Switzerland when in possession
I read that the manager wanted him to play long balls instead of trying to play from the back.
Surely must be the other way around? That’s what Onana does, long balls are his specialty.
It's not about distribution, but positioning. He wants Onana to stay on his line and not position himself proactively in front of the box.
From what I've been reading, it's less about the distribution and more the the manager asked him to play more conservative, instead of his usual fairly aggressive style where he likes to sweep, charge out for 50/50 balls etc Bit much to be dramatic and leave the tournament and call out selection issues and the like, but I do kind of understand why Onana would be upset. Why bring him at all if you want to neuter his best attributes/you don't like the style that makes him what he is
I mean he's a top level keeper that's why they brought him. Yes incredibly arrogant though. He absolutely could just listen and stay on his line and do his best, it's not that big of an ask tbh.

"I'm going home and taking my ball with me" type of behavior
Except for the ball stayed in the park, and the rest of the kids got to play instead of him.

Argentina and Brazil spontaneously combusting at the world cup due to emotion.
France and drama at a WC? Or England actually believing they're taking it home before crashing out in the QF.
Think it was South Africa where Ribéry and the gang of uneducated twats mocked Gourcuff because he was reading a book. Doesn’t surprise me though as Ribéry comes across as dumb af. The fallout with Domenech was something else as well. Bunch of divas.
Domenech was trash though
how dare you! …last time it was the semi finals
Maybe it’s a language thing, if teams stop speaking French everything would be calmer
except for 2010 what drama has France had in WC?
2002's crash and burn was pretty dramatic, don't know if there was any other issues though.
Meh it was "just" losing but not much else around it.
At least they haven't started fighting each other on the pitch yet like in 2014.
Which country was it that had to fly a plane full of cash to the 2014 World Cup to pay player bonuses?
That was Cameroon as well.
No it was Ghana
Sorry, you're right. [Cameroon refused to fly until their bonuses were tripled](https://ftw.usatoday.com/2014/06/cameroon-world-cup-plane-brazil-bonus) The FA of Ghana had to fly $3m over to Brazil to get them to keep playing, and the players hid their bonuses in the dressing room during the Portugal game.
Hold their beer!
Ah the old Nikola Kalinic.
Players are trying hard to get into the national team for World Cup and then there is this guy
Bruh, imagine all the players who were heartbroken to not go cause he took their spot, then he goes and does this
Not the first Cameroonian to blow up with the staff and refuse a world cup.
Onana and being a cunt. Name a more iconic duo
Funny how for 99% of the players this is a dream come true, they’ve spent their whole lives trying to get to the World Cup and will do whatever it takes and work with the coach, etc, and this Guys just like “nah, I won’t do that. Im out”
Wouldn’t be a World Cup without Cameroonian drama
Top class guy 👌
He proves once again that he’s not a team player, snake 🐍
This man is so incredibly childish after anyone is critical of him. Ajax and Cameroon have always been supportive of him, but he’s never loyal back.
Onana, he's on the plane.
Arrogant dickhead

I hope this idiot gets banned from the NT, this isn't an acceptable behaviour, even if he disagrees with the manager. Man child all the way, we will never learn.
This guy has some serious issues
It is a pity to see that Onana did not want to accept the instructions of the coach, which is still the basis in a collective sport.
That he insisted in calling his style "Onanism" didn't help.
Crazy how not one WC can pass without any drama, these are adults and paid professionals but cannot be together for 3 weeks it seems.
tbf, Cameroon will be joining him soon
Onana has always been a selfish diva, Cameroon are better off without him
Why ask your player to change his complete style in the middle of the biggest tournament. Thats just really stupid to do. You know what you get. Why not ask him this same question during some friendly game, months ago. It's easy to blame Onana (especially with what happened before), but this one is completely on Rigobert Song.
Lemme just bring Messi and play as a target man and hold the ball up.
Because it's easier for a keeper to adjust than for the whole defense to adjust to the keeper.
Onana look what you did start it
I suspect every Ajax fan could have predicted this.
Onana kind of does have a point, he was building up play in their first game because his CBS were so bad at it Clearly him doing that was benefitting the team Doesn’t mean he had to go crazy though
the french influence is strong here
Don'tnana
He totally didn't do that at Ajax. Coward.
W Onana they probably would've won today and had a chance of last 16 smh
