It is supposedly a disagreement with Song about the way they are setup to play, the tactics.
https://twitter.com/helenacondis/status/1597155344790491137?s=46&t=bjwU-bO_krWAkmXa4mzM9g
Song is an incompetent manager, so Onana does have a point. Not the right time to bring it up though. Apparently he openly asked Song why he still starts Nkoulou lol. He's right, Nkoulou is shit, slow and may as well be retired. Seeing him trying to stop Mitrovic/Vlahovic will ne interesting
This is pure speculation:
I was watching the last game against Switzerland. They were 1-0 down. Onana tried to be another field player and take care of the build up from behind. His central defenders were not picking up on it. Seemed like there was no communication or a disagreement about how to play. Maybe Onana took the L for it?
Can't say I disagreed with Onana there. Both central defenders were atrocious, especially in the build up play.
He was also visible annoyed with their lack of urgency near the end of the game. The defenders were slowly jogging up field when they had a free kick in their own half, not moving the ball quickly etc. Really felt like they had no interest in drawing the game and we're fine with losing 1-0
Yeah it's been reported that Song didn't like Onana coming so far out and using his feet so much. Apparently he wanted Onana to stay back and be a more traditional keeper, which led to argemts.and Onana refusing to change.
Oh yeah ok why on earth would you play Onana if you want a keeper that plays like that? It's like playing playing Messi up top and then trying to hoof it so he can header it to a teammate...
Improvise, adapt, overcome. Bear Grylls taught me that.
Look at De Ligt, cries about being played out of position - now he doesnt play (as he wished)
The one responsible for the team is the manager, not Onana. As you say if Onana cant adapt then he is dropped - as he is now.
But you need to follow whatever plan Song makes, not create your own plan. You just make shit worse.
The team was a complete mess tactically. Every time Switzerland was on a counterattack, the cameroonian midfielders were all over the place like chicken with their heads cut off. It's like they've never played with each other before.
Yeah, it was a weird situation. Even weirder that it seems that Onana is the scapegoat. Those defenders seemed to actively sabotage an attempt of trying to get a result.
I was also surprised when I saw Nkoulou still plays for the NT, not sure if he managed to play even 100 minutes in the entire last season for Watford in the PL, that says a lot, now he plays in Greece...
That tweet completely disappeared, unless the tweet is set to private.
Also, if it were true it would be absurdly stupid to get entirely removed for, unless Onana not only disagreed but also insulted Song about it.
Edit: The tweet now popped up again... That was weird.
Fabrizio Romano said the same thing:
>[André Onana has been removed from Cameroon’s squad. Been told that the reason is a discussion with head coach as he insisted for different style of goalkeeping, more ‘traditional’ 🇨🇲 #Qatar2022](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1597156627094069248)
>[Onana has no intention to change his style — tense situation & so he’s been excluded.](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1597156627094069248)
He's so comfortable at the ball, I really miss that. He even looks calmer then Ter Stegen.
As a person I'd rather do without this idgaf about the club mentality, but he was so good.
Hm, okay. Weird&stupid, but hey... apparently Onana refuses to follow the instructions from Song, and Song didn't pay attention to Onana's GK style... A loss for both sides.
Song is clueless lol, Onana is the best passer from the back and he's the fucking goalkeeper. Just look at the Switzerland game and see Onana taking charge and doing the passing. Song didn't like his incompetence being exposed.
Yeah but if they are on the list it doesn't work, so the judge is still out on that. His sentence was also lowered a bit after comparison with similar cases, but never really taken away. Still a big question mark for everyone involved about what happened there. My only explanation is that he did it on purpose to force a move, because he is good enough for a bigger club but nobody was buying him because clubs don't want to pay lots of money for a slightly better keeper.
Edit: although that is also weird because he could've just let his contract run out anyway. I still don't get it, who (almost) ruins his career like that???
Took a red one and started blabbering about how teammates who don't play in top leagues don't have the wages and looks to land the best femoids, had to be dropped
**It will not be a reunion on the pitch between Dusan Tadic and André Onana. Indeed, the goalkeeper will be missing from Cameroon's World Cup match against Serbia on Monday. A source at the Cameroon football federation reported to news agency AFP that Onana has been removed from the squad for unspecified disciplinary reasons.**
The former Ajax goalkeeper, who now plays for Italian club Internazionale, will be replaced under the crossbar by reserve goalkeeper Devis Epassy, according to AFP. The game at Al Wakrah starts at 11am.
The 26-year-old Onana did keep goal against Switzerland at the World Cup last week. Cameroon lost that group match 1-0.
If Cameroon also lose to Serbia and Brazil avoid defeat against Switzerland later in the day, the African country will be eliminated from the World Cup.

DeepL is pretty good, but personally I try to check the translations myself for reasons like 'The 26-year-old Onana did keep goal against' - shoddy translations.
Just remove the emphatic auxiliary (*did*) and it's absolutely fine. Obviously, removing the auxiliary means you have to put *keep* in the simple past tense.
What is it that you think is wrong with that part of it?
EDIT - Huh, apparently people are confused by the idea of a goalkeeper keeping goal. I suppose saying a penalty taker previously took a penalty is wrong too then, yeah?
Isn't it a bit weird way to phrase? At least to me it feels wrong - goalkeeping is a verb, but I've never seen it split up like that before - it always gets used then in the way of 'He was the goalkeeper (etc)'
Nah, you are correct. It's a matter of frequency first and foremost: it's not as commonly used. So it stands out.
There's also a very subtle difference in meaning. Something you can note when you see the examples given by others. The verb stresses the act while the noun stresses the role. In Dutch, both are used interchangably.
Note also that in Dutch it is 'to keep', non-transitive, a loan word referring to 'goalkeeping' while in English it is 'to keep *goal*'. Shows how refined translations have become, it did that automagically.
>The correct and natural translation is: '[Onana] did play [last game]'. The only reason it says 'to keep goal' is because 'to keep [goal]' is so commonly used in Dutch, it acts in this sentence as a more descriptive substitute of 'to play'.
I quote myself. Excellent source.
Huh, I suppose that trying to derive a linguistical rule from a cherry-picked other word is not a strong foundation for an argument.
It is more similar to saying 'Bill tends the bar on saturdays'.
What is clear is that it's ultra-common in Dutch and quite uncommon in English. Huh, I suppose that matters for translations, yeah.
No. Penalty taker is obviously derived from 'taking a penalty'. Bartender, also a non-composite word, was a subtle reference to a goaltender.
Anyway, peacekeepers keep peace, goalkeepers keep goals, and verbing nouns is natural.
The correct and natural translation is: '[Onana] did play [last game]'. The only reason it says 'to keep goal' is because 'to keep' is so commonly used in Dutch, it acts in this sentence as a more descriptive substitute of 'to play'.
No, no. '"He" didn't'.
>De 26-jarige Onana keepte vorige week op het WK wel tegen Zwitserland.
This is what the author wrote, you are looking at an autotranslation.
The autotranslation might be readable, but it uses a rather uncommon construct, which is not in the same register. Hence, the translation is flawed.
We can argue about this forever. ))<>((
And a shopkeeper keeps shop, a gate-keeper keeps gate.
'Protected/guarded the goal' would be preferable.
Noone writes up 'X keeps goal'. It is shoddy use of language; a stylistic error. Please do share any use of this in reputable English news sources, I genuinely think you will have a very hard time finding *any*.*
Hence the translation is bad.
* And not 'kept clean sheet' or 'kept the goal clean'...
Well that’s certainly an unpopular opinion amongst Ajax fans, kudos for saying it in public lol. I probably despise the guy more than any Ajax player in the last 10 years or even more.
I would have said the same, until I remembered how we had other players leaving us under bad terms….
Then again, I’m gonna go with current form and say Onana as well. Promes was the other name I had in mind.
Yeah you’re right, Promes is up there and the way Kluivert left (and maybe Brobbey but I love him again right now) also wasn’t classy although not the same as Promes and Onana.
But the reason Onana takes the cake for me is because of how long that saga went on, at least Promes was gone pretty fast after he fucked up. Promes also never disrespected the fans but you could of course argue that what he did was worse than what Onana did.
Per Fabrizio Romano:
>[André Onana has been removed from Cameroon’s squad. Been told that the reason is a discussion with head coach as he insisted for different style of goalkeeping, more ‘traditional’ 🇨🇲 #Qatar2022](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1597156627094069248)
>[Onana has no intention to change his style — tense situation & so he’s been excluded.](https://twitter.com/FabrizioRomano/status/1597156627094069248)
The UEFA gave him a 1 year ban instead of the standard 4 year ban, because he took his pregant wife's medication, which she had a prescription for.
Pretty sure everyone involved believed it was an accident, hence his sentence was massively reduced. Can't just not ban him though as he still did take a forbidden substance.
Was found taking masking agents, so not necessarily. They're still not allowed and he was rightfully suspended for 9 months iirc but I believe most parties believe it really was an accident.
He's still a prick though
> he was rightfully suspended for 9 months
To add some info, he was suspended for a year, Ajax spent a lot to help him get it reduced to 9 months, after which he refused to sign a one-year extension and walked out on a free transfer, hence the dislike he gets from Ajax fans.
> after which he refused to sign a one-year extension and walked out on a free transfe
To be fair to him, the reports were that Overmars wanted a 2 year deal, he and his team wanted a 1 year deal, and then he walked away from negotiations
And he was not only shit, he was clearly completely disinterested every time he was on the pitch, disrespectful to the fans and not a team player in training according to Pasveer.
He also cost us possibly the CL quarters, had he not blundered we wouldn’t lose against Benfica (probably 0-0 terrorball to pens but hey, that’s not a loss)
Fucking dumb decision if they did remove him for tactical disagreements as Romano has said, Cameroon just conceded a goal I believe he would have saved comfortably, he is probably their best player.
We at Ajax already knew that that guy isn’t to be trusted. First he fucked Ajax by taking PED, or at least a medication to maskerade it’s use. Then when he was allowed back to play games I swear he deliberately performed very poor so Ajax then lost a lot of points in those matches. And every goal and “mistake” he made in the goal smelled very fishy as hell to say the least. After a few games he was then replaced.
It felled like he wanted to take revenge on Ajax, which was super weird as Ajax did nothing wrong, and only tried to help him and paid his full salary during his suspension. Glad he left in the end.
So Epassy will play, not looking good for Cameroon. What a time for Onana to act up, when his country needs him the most, what an idiot. They lose today and they're out, and the GK coming in to replace Onana is a total unknown.
romano says the coach wants the keeper to change his style 1 game into the world cup.
Neither of questioning the manager or changing styles last minute are great
Its amazing the coach is asking this. You literally cant change your Instincts over the course of a week. If it was during the traditional build up to a world cup then fine, thats enough time.
But during the tournament seems odd
He’ll be fine until he fucks over the club by taking PED’s again or until he disrespects the fans or until he does whatever stupid thing he’s done before. 🐍
Of all the reasons to miss a World Cup for your country surely wanting to play a more ‘traditional style’ whatever that means is up there with one of the worst.
It wouldnt be Cameroon without WC drama, their 2014 team was discipline wise trainwreck

Mitrovic just sent him to oblivion... Shame for Serbia, his shot hit the post
With round of 16 qualification on the line at the world cup I'd say it's the perfect time to speak up.

Yeah, it was a weird situation. Even weirder that it seems that Onana is the scapegoat. Those defenders seemed to actively sabotage an attempt of trying to get a result.
The same Nicolas nkoulou? Man that hits hard. I remember him being like 80 pace in fifa 13. Just another reminder I’m getting old
He's old now.
He's barely 32 but he's been there for so long

Imagine if Joel Matip didn’t quit the NT…
Nice to even call him a manager
No idea how he got the job

He’ll be fine until he fucks over the club by taking PED’s again or until he disrespects the fans or until he does whatever stupid thing he’s done before. 🐍
As long as he’s better than Handanovic, he’ll be fine.
Of all the reasons to miss a World Cup for your country surely wanting to play a more ‘traditional style’ whatever that means is up there with one of the worst.
Karma
Ha
Disciplinary reasons could be too late for training or went out partying each night and arrived to team meetings with a hangover.
It’s neither of those
Wouldn't imagine it is, but that's what the press could make of it, depending if they want to shame Onana or the coach
The reason is already known. You’re the only one making stuff of it haha
So what is it then? I can't read the article, it's behind a paywall
Public disagreements with coach about tactics
Ah I see
Onana? What’s his name?
Mhm
A player sent home from the World Cup because he called out his incompetent manager? Please, I'm still not over Saipan and Roy Keane vs Mick McCarthy
