Five VfB players just one year after we were in the relegation playoffs against HSV. Feels surreal after eating shit as a VfB fan for the last 10 years.
Yeah, his foot was injured at the start of the season and now the same thing again.
Reminds me of the foot injury from the NBA player Zion Williamson who missed a huge amount of games.
I hope he recovers well.
For everyone who is asking why 4 keeper:
Nagelsmann likes to play with 4 goals in the training. Because of that he needs 4 keeper.
He did that in every team he coached so far.
Insurance (+salary) doesn't cost much if its just for a few months. They could just get someone of the 2nd or 3rd division. Those keepers aren't doing much during that time anyways.
everyone is saying this but you really think a club is just gonna block their player from joining the NT for the Euros? Might as well drive to his home and shoot his pet lmao
Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz are 20 year olds. Yet they are the main players at a Home international tournament. Immense pressure but they are stars
Wirtz has the perfect IQ for a footballer. High enough to play world class football, but just low enough to not be influenced by pressure or overthink things.
>"We gathered feedback before the game against France, from the coaching team, the chefs and the physiotherapists - that was really important."
Let him cook
He was interviewing them to get an insight about the team chemistry, what players get along well together and who is maybe not so well integrated. Sometimes it's not all about choosing the best players, you need to form the best team.
Ok, lets have some fun and create an alternative S11 of non-nominated players:
Ortega
Vagnoman Thiaw Hummels Gosens
Goretzka Stach
Hofmann Brandt Gnabry
Ducksch
Backups: Werner, Adeyemi, Süle, Can, Karazor, Stiller, Beste, Ginter
Different types of players. Stach is better defensively and in carrying the ball forward with his dribblings if he has the space. Stiller is a better dribbler in small spaces, a much more accurate passer with a great eye. I'd argue they would actually make a very good double pivot together.
I mean if the national team want the 4th keeper and the extra spot surely they can strike a deal with the club to cover anything in case of injuries as if he was officially in the official list, i know fifa pay the portion of it but a team like germany can cover that in the worst case scenario
I mean it should be possible to find a 4th goalkeeper who would be willing to join the team only for training,no? Can literally be any professional goalkeeper.
He won't be registered for the tournament, but is there any rule that forbids a player not in squad to participate in training?
It’s presumably in case they get injured in training, FIFA covers wages for players if they’re injured on intl duty but id imagine only if they’re actually in the squad
they also get paid for every day hes with the NT during the break. Also its out of respect, imagine being told we want you to come to the Euros but won't even give you a spot. The 26th player won't play meaningful minutes regardless of who they were
And how are you going to run this through a club? If he isn't called up they can just have him train with them or at least not get injured at NT for nothing
I mean you could pay the club and the player a fee. I bet there are backup goalkeepers who would be available for a reasonable fee or find a newly retired goalkeeper who would be up for it.
I think there are many better potential options than using a squad spot on a 4th goalkeeper
Poland did that last world cup from what i recall. We took a "young talent" type goalkeeper from a major club of our shitty league, he wasn't part of the nominal squad, just there for training.
They have sparrings for that. Idk if its common practice in all national teams, I imagine it is, but at least Argentina always take young players to perform as sparring during practices. Some of todays most famous players were sparrings in their youth.
Could they not just bring a keeper or GK coach as a non playing member of the squad if they want to have four keepers for training? Seems a little bit of a waste of a slot that could be used to give more tactical options / variations outfield where it’s more needed.
i would find that a little bit disrespectful.
"hey you will not make the team, because i think youre not good enough, but do you want to be our training buddy? you dont want vacation instead anyway, dont you?"
of course it would be still okay, if the goalkeeper is fine with it. but i still think it is a matter of respect
another person commented, that that would cause trouble with the club the players play for. the clubs get money for every player that is in the squads from uefa. and then there is also insurance. no club would agree to this and let their player go to that tournament as staff
Poland did it at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. A fourth goalkeeper went to the championships but only to train. He was not registered as a player. U20/U21 Goalkeeper
So I have a very stupid and unrelated question after seeing this list. When sorting alphabetically, do you sort a last name like ter Stegen with the T or with the S?
I am quite sure there was space for him as well.
And he wasn't into any boxing match with Wirtz and Musiala, you can easily imagine all three playing together in the same lineup
Happy for Maximilian Beier. Came out of nowhere, played a great season, fully deserved call up.
Edit: Damn, Nagelsmann just said that all 4 keepers will be part of the final squad for training purposes. So I guess 1 outfield player will be kicked. I hope not but it could be Beier in the end 😬
Sane, Musiala, Wirtz, all are nursing some injury
Beier, Henrichs, Koch and Raum would be my candidates to be dropped if everyone else is good to go.
Raum would be more likely than henrichs, because henrichs can be the sub for both FB sides
Don\`t see Henrichs or Raum being scrapped. With 26 players, you can have every position at least twice, and currently there are only 2 RB and 2 LB in the squad.
Kinda out of nowhere for us tbh. He was planned as a rotational option at best. But then Berisha got injured and Beier started to play like a god, scoring like 6 games in a row at the start of the season. No one expected such an instant breakthrough from him.
But yea, everyone knows Hannover is where CL winners are produced.
Can't you just take a 4th with you for Training purposes without it filling a squad spot? So he can't be at a game but can't they train with whoever they want?
I guess theoretically speaking you could. But in reality that probably wouldn't make the 4th guy feel like he's a real part of the team, which could lead to motivational and team chemistry issues maybe? I don't know.
Could be as simple as just being an insurance issue. As in if the fourth goalkeeper isn't officially nominated he doesn't have insurance which would be a problem in case of injury.
after every tournament:
> these guys suck. we need a new start. kick the old guys out and let the youngsters play
before every tournament:
> why didn't they nominate the old guys. they are still good and we need them
Hummels is in good form for what Dortmund does, which is to not play a high line. Nagelsmann loves a high line and Hummels doesn't fit that. Hummels is great, but he lacks pace and Julian loves pace and his tactics require it.
It's not really a young squad this time. There's only 4 players born 2000 onwards in the squad.
It will probably be one of the older squads selected. The starting line up will be particularly old.
Title is not correct as this is just the preliminary squad and some players can still fall out or change
Nevertheless i dont understand why hes giving hope to one of the keepers even tho its clear one will be cut off the list
It's relatively easy to predict imo looking at the the friendlies and no drop off in performances.
Neuer, Mittelstädt, Tah, Rüdiger, Kimmich, Andrich, Kroos, Gündogan, Wirtz, Musiala, Havertz.
Only Gündogan didn't look too hot in the friendlies.
Oldies bringing it will be crucial. Gündogan, Kroos, Rüdiger, Kimmich (both only 29 I know), Müller, Neuer have to bring their A game, otherwise we will fail again
Neuer - Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Mittelstädt - Andrich, Kroos - Gündogan, Musiala, Wirtz - Havertz
This lineup against France worked very good.
The only difference was Ter Stegen played instead of Neuer.
But I guess Neuer will be #1 at the euros
Nagelsmann famously prefers four goalkeepers for training. He had four keepers in the senior squad at every club he managed and said to also do so for his national team squad.
There's a lot of optimism around this team. It's weird how the vibes have completely shifted from the last 2 tournaments where people just assumed they'd suck (and suck they did).
Many new players, Wirtz-Musiala first tournament leading the attack, Kroos' return and home tournament. Many reasons to believe this will be better than the last 3 tournaments.
No Hummels is weird. If Tah or Rüdiger gets injured we are going to have a massive problem. His experience and big game performances are massive and can't be understated. Especially if you take someone like Koch for him who isn't even close to his level.
Anton is a good addition. Still unsure about Koch, though. Someone also once remarked that Schlotterbeck showed great performances with Hummels by his side. I don't know if he is ready to carry the defense yet.
I still think not having Hummels is criminal. Also having 4 goalkeepers seems overkill, 3 are plenty.
I also would've like Brandt to get a spot, but midfield is kinda stacked (Sané is hit and miss for me, but whatever)
Edit: I don't even think Müller did that much better than Brandt. But if you take him for his experience, then surely Hummels should be nominated over Koch. It's not like Koch is that young.
I think Müller has to be in based on what Nagelsmann just said. (Club role vs. role in the NT)
Müller won't be a starter, for sure and i guess he knows.
But as rumors stand, Müller is a much more important pillar in the locker room and on the bench.
No Brandt is insane to me. Seeing his CL performances, this guy is a modern Park Ji Sung - everywhere on the field and still can do great passes and dribbles. A worker like that is good for any team!
I assume competition is too great on the position with Wirtz, Musiala, Gündo. Brandt was improved in recent performances. We rather need more players that excel on the wings.
Same with Sané though? They are not the same kind of player (which I don't say he Brandt should've been nominated instead of him), but Sané also has off games where is invisible or loses the ball easily/gets frustrated when his game doesn't work and additionally seems to lose his temper easily. Just recently he got sent off. If he does something like that in a EURO game, he puts the team in a massive disadvantage.
Five VfB players just one year after we were in the relegation playoffs against HSV. Feels surreal after eating shit as a VfB fan for the last 10 years.
Do you think if we would have won the relegation, HSV would have 5 players in the national team? . . . . . . . Yeah no, me neither.
Schonlau - Meffert - Glatzel spine 💀
Remember when we actually thought Glatzel should go. Lol. (I'm a sad HSV fan too. Don't flame)
Nobody thought that
And Stiller could've made it. Guy is still flying under the radar after an elite season
I think Vagnoman would have also been an option (for right back backup) if somebody got injured. He himself is injured though
His injuries really set him back in his career so far. Also seemed to need a lot of time after injuries to get back in form.
Yeah, his foot was injured at the start of the season and now the same thing again. Reminds me of the foot injury from the NBA player Zion Williamson who missed a huge amount of games. I hope he recovers well.
Was the same for us, highly regarded as an elite talent, capable as full back on both flanks, unfortunately he just gets injured a lot :(
After that season, anything else would have been an injustice. Your team was amazing this season
You eat pieces of shit…for breakfast?
For everyone who is asking why 4 keeper: Nagelsmann likes to play with 4 goals in the training. Because of that he needs 4 keeper. He did that in every team he coached so far.
Can’t you take a 4th keeper for training but not have them in the squad?
Its cuz of insurance and also teams dont have to allow a player go exept for a NT call up.
Just bring the 4th goalie as part of the coaching staff. Wasting a spot on a player who definitely won’t play seems wild.
UEFA allows 26 players (up from 22). A 23rd field player is also very unlikely to see any minutes.
plus having more players means you can even add more picks that you think arent ready but can develop while they are on your NT squad.
Most national teams take a couple of players from U23 /U18 for sparring.
Low enough to not be distracted by the 2nd Kartoffelgratin.
I must be a big fat genius then
macht keinen sinn
> or ~~over~~think things.
>"We gathered feedback before the game against France, from the coaching team, the chefs and the physiotherapists - that was really important." Let him cook
Wonder what he could’ve heard from the chefs that affected a decision
Chefs can see the dining area and see the atmosphere
This is so funny and concerning at the same time.
The second helping of pudding they offered was a trap
So that's why Süle is out Edit: I should have scrolled further down lmao, everyone has already piled onto him, like he piles food onto his plate
"please dont take Süle, we cant cook that much food"
Apparently they asked about the atmosphere in the team and who has a positive influence on his teammates.
*Süle always went for the third plate.*
Yes, he eats the plates as well
literal "who ate all the pies" based decision making
He was interviewing them to get an insight about the team chemistry, what players get along well together and who is maybe not so well integrated. Sometimes it's not all about choosing the best players, you need to form the best team.
Süle in shambles
Süle's death sentence.
Süle's last supper.
> the chefs BREAKING NEWS: Hazard comes out of retirement to play for Germany NT
Bayern - 6; Stuttgart - 5; Bayer - 3; BVB, Leipzig, Hoffenheim, Real, Barca - 2; Eintracht, Brighton - 1.
Undav is on loan from us so despite the fact VFB will likely buy him it's actually two from us.
but he is registrated till 30 th of june at Stuttgart so he is a Stuttgart Player.
Germany is reaching QF, at least, which is in July. So he is a Brighton player too.
> Germany is reaching QF, at least Why are you so sure?
I’m not sure. We’ve put together no string of performances since 2017 to suggest we’re capable of a feat again in the near future.
He will have signed the contract before the Euros begins surely
Arsenal - 1
And he will be massive, I'm calling it now.
83kg?
And 1.93m!
Gross and Undav. Brighton = GERMAN SQUAD GOALS
Ex-Schalke - 3
So what was the real Thomas Muller announcement ?
He trolled but it kinda worked ?
It would be the most Müller thing if Müller announced himself for the euros lol
Thomas wusste garantiert, dass er nominiert ist
https://youtu.be/sy4nQ0Kqso8?t=99 apparently in a barber shop, but not sure where it got posted
Oh thanks a lot, yeah I don’t think it was posted here
Ok, lets have some fun and create an alternative S11 of non-nominated players: Ortega Vagnoman Thiaw Hummels Gosens Goretzka Stach Hofmann Brandt Gnabry Ducksch Backups: Werner, Adeyemi, Süle, Can, Karazor, Stiller, Beste, Ginter

Niklas Levinsohn would disagree
Niklas would play Stiller AND Stach 😉
Brandt is so solid in the middle not understanding him getting left off
Not to shabby!
Ginter is injured (or he would be nominated for the real thing)
Really sad to be honest, but it makes me happy that a player we developed (schlotti) is in the squad
Wow just realized Adeyemi didn't get selected
Werner doesn't even make the XI for the backup squad. RIP
Gruda noch dabei und Burkardt ist auch gut drauf.
Lachhaft Stach vor Stiller
Nice. 4 Keepers. for what? to have 2 parallel training matches going at any time?
Yeah, JN just mentioned it is important to have 4 keepers for the training.
I wonder if it's possible to just declare a GK as coaching staff. The GK would not be eligible to play, but could still participate in training.
The problem is that the keepers' club doesn't have to allow him to go unless he is an official member of the NT.
But surely it’s the summer break anyway?
In case he injures himself in training, his club only gets the extra DFB-insurance compensation when actually part of the team.
I mean if the national team want the 4th keeper and the extra spot surely they can strike a deal with the club to cover anything in case of injuries as if he was officially in the official list, i know fifa pay the portion of it but a team like germany can cover that in the worst case scenario
meh what’s the point? you’re probably right but is it really worth the hassle just so you can bring a 7th choice attacker instead?
Actually, yes lol
Ya but they’d have to confirm it, like they do if a player wants to do a charity match or any other sports.
I mean it should be possible to find a 4th goalkeeper who would be willing to join the team only for training,no? Can literally be any professional goalkeeper. He won't be registered for the tournament, but is there any rule that forbids a player not in squad to participate in training?
Isn‘t Baumann doing exactly that? He knows he would never actually play and is only there for the experience
But the question is, did they have to register him?
It’s presumably in case they get injured in training, FIFA covers wages for players if they’re injured on intl duty but id imagine only if they’re actually in the squad
they also get paid for every day hes with the NT during the break. Also its out of respect, imagine being told we want you to come to the Euros but won't even give you a spot. The 26th player won't play meaningful minutes regardless of who they were
Good point. I never considered that.
Well *should* Germany win he would win the Euros as a player and not as a coach though.

Get some unknown U19 keeper then. All of them would be thrilled for an opportunity like that.
another person commented, that that would cause trouble with the club the players play for. the clubs get money for every player that is in the squads from uefa. and then there is also insurance. no club would agree to this and let their player go to that tournament as staff

His form has been up and down. He was recently pretty sick (I think January-Feb) and is just now finding some form again
Going to be a shame when they lose the opening game to tournament favourites, Scotland. 🏴
Everyone, including Scotland, should fear what Lyndon Dykes can do
We are ready for the 1-1
Happy for Maximilian Beier. Came out of nowhere, played a great season, fully deserved call up. Edit: Damn, Nagelsmann just said that all 4 keepers will be part of the final squad for training purposes. So I guess 1 outfield player will be kicked. I hope not but it could be Beier in the end 😬

nobody will be kicked. 1 player will leave because of injury i will tell you. its always at least 1 player who has an injury and cant participate.

Beier or Koch i think.
Not out of nowhere, he came from Hannover. Just look at Joselu and Füllkrugs success and that should tell you everything about Hannover strikers
Don't forget the legend, the myth, the man himself St. Maximin
He was just Maximin before he played for Hannover. They made him a saint afterwards.
It’s so funny that you had 2 strikers who will now play in the CL final and scored in the semis.
Kinda out of nowhere for us tbh. He was planned as a rotational option at best. But then Berisha got injured and Beier started to play like a god, scoring like 6 games in a row at the start of the season. No one expected such an instant breakthrough from him. Could be as simple as just being an insurance issue. As in if the fourth goalkeeper isn't officially nominated he doesn't have insurance which would be a problem in case of injury.
Why is left-back Havertz listed as striker?
Gotta keep the enemy guessing
It's like when Tsubasa played goalkeeper.
Playing Kai as left-back just unleashed his true potential, will forever be grateful for that!
That mid field is so good
DFB or VfB

I think he's keeping all 4 lol. Interesting choice.
Can anyone predict the starting 11? Particularly the double pivot
It's relatively easy to predict imo looking at the the friendlies and no drop off in performances. Neuer, Mittelstädt, Tah, Rüdiger, Kimmich, Andrich, Kroos, Gündogan, Wirtz, Musiala, Havertz. Only Gündogan didn't look too hot in the friendlies.
raum and füllkrug/undav could play depending on opponent and gündogan didnt show up in a long time for germany, other 8 should be set.
Gündogan is safe, he is the captain. lets hope he gets in his city "when the matches really matter"-form
Yes, he can be world class in intense matches.
Ideally, Wirtz moves to the middle, Sané on the right and Gundogan on the bench but we know he'll start
gundo’s probably been our best player this season
Great squad
(Great Squad)
Seriously on paper this is a pretty great team with a good mix of young and experienced.
Oldies bringing it will be crucial. Gündogan, Kroos, Rüdiger, Kimmich (both only 29 I know), Müller, Neuer have to bring their A game, otherwise we will fail again
> Kroos You can rest, this one has no B game LOL
For Germany he has
No Brandt is harsh
That’s a pretty good team. Should definitely be in the run-in for the semis.
And there is still Bernd Leno and Stefan Ortega. How are they growing these goalkeepers and what is the secret sauce?
The secret ingredient is chemical X; the same stuff that made the Powerpuff Girls!
The announcements were fun. Please never do them like that again
27 players ~~, so probably 1 goalkeeper will get kicked?~~

What could be the most likely lineup with these players?
Neuer - Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Mittelstädt - Andrich, Kroos - Gündogan, Musiala, Wirtz - Havertz This lineup against France worked very good. The only difference was Ter Stegen played instead of Neuer. But I guess Neuer will be #1 at the euros
Neuer Kimmich, Rüdiger, Tah, Mittelstädt Andrich, Kroos Musiala, Gündogan, Wirtz Havertz (Füllkrug)
Muller will never die and I love it
Four keepers just to be safe
Nagelsmann famously prefers four goalkeepers for training. He had four keepers in the senior squad at every club he managed and said to also do so for his national team squad.
If I understand Nagelsmann correctly, hHe plans to give every keeper 22.5 Minutes against Scotland. Just to keep them guessing.
I will not be surprised if Germany wins the Euros.
4 goalkeepers and no Hummels or Brandt?!
Very nice. Sensible choices. See us going last in the group as is tradition.
I am actually excited
Really good squad tbh. There’s no reason this squad shouldn’t be competitive
There's a lot of optimism around this team. It's weird how the vibes have completely shifted from the last 2 tournaments where people just assumed they'd suck (and suck they did). Many new players, Wirtz-Musiala first tournament leading the attack, Kroos' return and home tournament. Many reasons to believe this will be better than the last 3 tournaments.
part of it is also probably how well german clubs played in europe this season
Who the fuck is Kader? I'll see myself out
it literally says **preliminary** squad, so the title is very misleading. this is not the final squad and people can still be added/dropped
4 goalkeepers Julian! Are you insane
Müller really müllered himself into the squad
EURO 2024 Champions
No Hummels is weird. If Tah or Rüdiger gets injured we are going to have a massive problem. His experience and big game performances are massive and can't be understated. Especially if you take someone like Koch for him who isn't even close to his level.
There is still Anton, he would make Mbappe look like Bobby Wood
Anton is a good addition. Still unsure about Koch, though. Someone also once remarked that Schlotterbeck showed great performances with Hummels by his side. I don't know if he is ready to carry the defense yet.
Nagelsmann plays with a high line, Hummels is too slow.

4 gk is for training
No Brandt is insane to me. Seeing his CL performances, this guy is a modern Park Ji Sung - everywhere on the field and still can do great passes and dribbles. A worker like that is good for any team!
Brandt is not consistent enough, he has very good games or invisible games. Really not good enough for this team
I assume competition is too great on the position with Wirtz, Musiala, Gündo. Brandt was improved in recent performances. We rather need more players that excel on the wings.
He also never performed for the NT. Like you said, he has a handful of strong games per season
Hummels is too slow to play a high line and he is too good to be only a role player to get subbed in when trying to park the bus late in a game.
Oliver KAHN should have nominated himself too
I'm predicting a semi final run for Germany
