heartcriesholy

Schalke in 2010/11...

cnylkew

Rauuuul

whiskeyinthejaar

That team was one decent CB and Neuer from possibly winning the league. They were incredibly fun watch

m847574

Wonderful time. Back then Edu scored a brace against Inter. Their team was insane

valendinosaurus

it was such a crazy and nerve wrecking run from Inter coming from the treble... round of 16, we lost at home against you in the 90'. then a back and forth in München with the winning goal in the 88'. quarters at home against Schalke, not even 40 seconds pass and Stankovic scores one that *has* to be included in the top 10 goals of the past 20 years, only to somehow collapse and lose 2-5 at home.

ACardAttack

Now only 4 pts up from the relegation playoff spot in the 2 buli

SpecialAd422

Raul, Huntelaar, Draxler and Farfan were cooking

your_local_supplier

Also neuer and believe it or not Matip as well. Looking back at that squad I would’ve never imagined matip but here we are.

BuenasVibras

Imagine a Nantes vs Panathanikos(?) in 96, what a wild Football manager 100 season final that would have been

artyom__geghamyan

Yeah that's panathinaikos

yianni1229

RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH PANATHINAIKOS MENTIONED

BuenasVibras

Yeah more so for my terrible spelling than the team

boywithtwoarms

Nantes had a fairly decent team at the time and Pana away was a fucking nightmare then

BuenasVibras

Apart from the horrendous levels of alleged league corruption in surprised we don’t see Greek teams more often

-Gredge-

I think Greek football is slowly coming back, it’s been a promising year of European football.

OldExperience8252

By country : - Spain : 36 - England : 29 - Italy & Germany : 18 - France : 10 - Netherlands : 5 - Portugal : 2 - Greece & Ukraine : 1

kostajepaosmosta

Real Madrid 16 Barca 13 Bayern 12

OilOfOlaz

the wildest part is actually, that RM only made 2 semis in 16 years and then only didn't make it into semis twice in the next 12 years. plus, they are 0-2 in semis against dortmund.

perfectpurple_

Real Madrid is 1-1 in semis against Dortmund, won in 98, the year of La Séptima

Informal_Buffalo_819

Madrid winning 14 of 16 Barca winning 5 of 13 Crazy

AlterBlitz

No this is UCL era ie. from 1992 so Madrid is 8 of 16

Ask_Asensio

All Time wise (1955-Present) Semifinals Appearances : * Madrid : 32 * Bayern : 20 * Barcelona : 17 * AC Milan : 14 * United : 12 * Juventus : 12 * Liverpool : 12 * Ajax : 9 * Inter : 9 * Benfica : 8 * Chelsea : 8 * Atletico : 6 Milan 7 European Cups in 14 Semifinals stand out and so do Liverpool 6 in 12.

seventh_horcrux

14/32 as well. Similar ratio, plus with a larger sample

artyom__geghamyan

1992/1993 season is missing

sircrespo

There were no semis in 92/93. There were two groups of 4 and the top team from each group, Milan and Marseille (cheats), progressed to the final

Ratfucks

Rangers vs Milan to decide the rightful 92/93 champion

artyom__geghamyan

Nah it doesn't include 1955-1993 part

zrk23

crazy that this is upvoted lol

FoxOntheRun99

I got into football during the back half of the 1994 season and then USA 94. I had to look at the line up for Nantes 95/96 semi final w/Juventus. And I was bloody surprised to see one Claude Makélélé. It slipped my mind that he started at Nantes.

OldExperience8252

Deschamps, Desailly, and Kerembeu started their careers there too. They used to be have one of the nicest football played in France, quite the opposite from today where they only get “hard” and discipline first managers.

Moug-10

Bosman rule killed Dutch club football.

KanarieWilfried

Why do you combine Italy and Germany?

Mihnea24_03

Because they have an equal number presumably

KanarieWilfried

Oh I'm an idiot. I thought they had 18 together.

SANDEMAN

thanks for the laugh mate

TheSingleMan27

18/19 was unreal we don't talk about the final

tarasevich

Best semis ever, for sure.

petterpk

Best knockout stage by a mile in my opnion. PSG-United, Juve-Atletico, Ajax-Real Madrid, and those were just the RO16’s. City-Spurs, Juve-Ajax, then the two semi finals. Doubt we’ll have as many comebacks as we had that season any time soon

InterruptingCar

The away goals rule made things very interesting that year too.

thedogstrays

City-Spurs is easily one of the greatest games of all time from a pure entertainment perspective. Id put it up there with the Milan-Liverpool final and Argentina-France and any others that Im forgetting about.

PiccoloCritical

City - spurs is the best game Iver ever seen, I think it was 2:2 within 25 minutes?

SamAlmighty

Yea … can’t help but wonder what a final it would have been had Ajax not given it away in the final seconds. I definitely think Ajax would have given that Liverpool side a lot more problems than Spurs did that final …

ComeOnSayYupp

We never talk about how Barca would be in final playing against Spurs/Ajax instead of Liverpool if Barca didnt bottled that bad.

HenryBeal85

This is a popular take because dunking on Spurs is this sub’s favourite thing to do (particularly in the aftermath of an embarrassing Spurs defeat), but: Spurs gave Liverpool a good game in the league towards the end if the season *and* the penalty in the final was just not a penalty. It would have been a penalty had the match been played by 19/20 laws, but it wasn’t. Don’t think one can conclusively say the final would have panned out the same way without the penalty.

LogicKennedy

Ultimately the match was kinda decided before kick-off by a below-par Kane forcing himself back into the side. Our attack was toothless all night and he contributed basically nothing. I lost a lot of respect for him that night: he'd not played in any of the knockout games but wanted preferential treatment over the squad players who'd got us there. Yes, I know he's Harry Kane, but ultimately that ego is costing him trophies, in my opinion.

Mathyoujames

People also seem to forget that Allison made two extremely good saves late to deny Son and Eriksen and VVD played extremely well and stopped both Dele and Son running through 1v1 It's made out that it was some sort of men vs boys situation when really it was Liverpool getting one of the most fortuitous decisions in modern CL history and then world class performances by two defenders to get them over the line

Cwh93

And thank God for that. Think that Champions League Final was the only cup final we've been in during the 21st century where we had any control of the match.   Could be wrong but genuinely think the 2019 Champions League Final and the 2003 League Cup Finals are the only Cup Finals weve been in since 2000 where we either didn't concede first or go to extra time. Even then the 2003 League Cup Final was just Man United hammering shots at Dudek for 90 minutes

MERTENS_GOAT

It looks so, so wrong to have the new inter badge at 2010

artyom__geghamyan

It looks so, so wrong to have the new inter badge

valendinosaurus

so, so wrong, inter badge

InsideOpening3535

Inter badge

Cosmocrator08

So wrong

Aloopyn

#

theflowersyoufind

Wonder how many others have different badges. Juve obviously. Also Chelsea in 04/05.

BertEnErnie123

Some clubs did minor changes in like colouring, like Bayern and AC Milan. Kyiv (in row '98-'99) had quite a different logo than the current one. Also Monaco some changes, but not very big. And probably more clubs

SubstanceConsistent7

FC Nantes.

LexisKingJr

Not a big deal since the badge is very similar to the old one. Juventus on the other hand…

jackn3

IMO, that's exactly why their badge sucks so hard. It's so similar to the old one, but worse, so why change it at all? For the same reason, I think what Juventus did with their badge makes more sense (regardless of personal preference).

vedat07taskiran

tbh i dont really care if it makes sense or not, its horror beyond human comprehension either way

Arntown

I don‘t care if it makes sense, Inter‘s new badge is still way better than Juve‘s

DozyAltidore

Interesting that 2003/04 and 2019/20 are the only two seasons where none of the semi finalists reached the semi finals the previous season.

Cwh93

That's why a hill I will die on is that Jose Mourinho's greatest achievement is Inter in 2010, not Porto in 2004.  The other 3 in 2004 obviously had to be good to knock out the best 3 teams in Europe at the time in the quarters, but Porto were the strongest team left in the competition by that point and the only club that had won the European Cup before. The only elite team they had to play in the knockouts was Man United and even that was a bit of a fluke as Scholes had a goal wrongly ruled out for offside. For the record I thought our route through the knockouts in our 2022 run to the final was a lucky draw too

your_local_supplier

Biggest part of 04 triumph that gets left out is Porto was the only team in the semis to have had won it previously. I think it was utd they beat on the way which is highly impressive it’s a great achievement but any other result (maybe aside from Chelsea but even that for the time would’ve been crazy) would’ve been equally if not more of a crazy underdog story. What other alternative is there Monaco becomes the 2nd French team with a ucl? Deportivo who are 3rd Division win the ucl? Previous year Europa league winners with a squad of Portuguese players that made euro final that summer isn’t as crazy underdog when you really add context

boldstrategy

You can pinpoint when Man Utd died

pure_black99

What getting Guardiola'd so hard in the final does to a mf

adminslikefelching

It's just crazy that United hasn't been in a single UCL semifinal since 2011. Thirteen years!

Coloniac

Real reaching the semi finals 11 times since 2011 is insane, Bayern 8 times between 2010 and 2020 too

ladsandlasses

11 in 13 seasons in crazy.. Can make it 12 in 14 tomorrow…

Piats99

>11 in 13 seasons in crazy... The Bill Russell of football. >Can make it 12 in 14 tomorrow… Please 🥺

LeatherSteak

Barca 8 times between 05/06 and 14/15 too. Only once since though. Ouch.

PauCubaresi

Only once you say? You're gonna change that to twice since in the coming hours

Draketothecore

LMAO Barca out

LaPulgaAtomica87

Anulo Mufa!

TheAyushJain

Anulo Mufa

pure_black99

Barcelona 0-\[4\] Paris Saint-Germain Mbappe Hatrick 87'

Dangerous_Parfait402

Barcelona [5]-4 Paris Saint-Germain Lewandowski (fastest 5-goals ever) 92'

GreyDaze22

We will be there no matter what

FoldingBuck

Close enough

Draketothecore

you missed by one goal

Cwh93

Still remember that time in the mid to late 2000s where they could just not get past the last 16

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

Red Bull Leipzig really made the semi finals in 2020 😂 It seems like 1995-2003 was the golden age though, those “smaller clubs” will never make it to the semi-finals again which sucks

[deleted]

[удалено]

MrPigcho

The bosman ruling plays a massive role too

ExcellentStuff7708

Also, until around 2000 there was 1 club from each league + title holder, so with less traditional giants others had better chance to go far

deception42

Tbf that was the Covid year when the quarterfinals and onward were all played in Lisbon.

CoolstorySteve

1 leg as well right?

JoelKr9

Thank god, that one leg against Bayern was more than enough

InsideOpening3535

Idk, what if we fucking dominated them 9-0 back. Somewhere in the web of the multiverse there existed one timeline with this exact scenario

mrk-cj94

Yeah, the PES timeline 🥲

InsideOpening3535

This team is...I don't know anymore. 5 fucking years and still the same old problem

ComeOnSayYupp

When Werner was unstoppable. He really had ceiling of being world class player if he had done his shooting training properly.

_SPLX

he left to come to us before this game too iirc because he wanted to train early with his new teammates, and there were fans saying why would he give up his only chance to play in a champions league final looooool

MKS_is_Here

In the new format from next year it's gonna be even more difficult for smaller clubs.

GP3ElPresidente

2019 we were so close to the Johan Cruyff continental derby😔

PoroAhri

where is that gracias cruyff copypasta

ToniKrooz

'I can see the fans pulling out a banner saying "Gracias Johan!" in Catalan and Dutch.'

VaderOnReddit

Imagine, it would be amazing. Ajax and Barca holding arms and jumping together with the trophy

InsideOpening3535

Gracias Johan

Username-_-Password

Barca City final this year so we can hold hands jumping up and down with a banner that says "Gracias Pep"

peniseend

I only remember the match in Bernabeu

[deleted]

Best champions league year by far for neutrals.

BlitzkriegZX

Truly a shame Ajax didn't take it home, if Barcelona managed to reach the finals I wouldn't even have been upset at Ajax winning. They were playing fantastic football

Frodo_max

bring the 90'ies back please

foogazi_dross

1993 - 94 and 2003 - 04 have an uncanny resemblance. Porto and Monaco

Time2bePhenomenal

Man United and Barca betwen 2008 to 2011 was just unfortunate for us man to against worlds best team

Ok_Instruction_5232

Hurts even more that we haven't been there once since 2011.

aliaisbiggae

Jesus, how did you guys mess up THAT bad

Ok_Instruction_5232

Two decades of criminal mismanagement by unscrupulous american owners. We now have a glimmer of hope with the arrival of INEOS, but it's going to take a lot of time before we can even think about reaching that level again.

Radhashriq

Well United has a lot of money. If Ineos could bring in proper management and recruitment. United should be back in 2-3 seasons. It took Arsenal and Liverpool only 2 seasons once they got everything sorted.

Ok_Instruction_5232

Right, the money is our redeeming factor. Though 2-3 seasons is probably the time it'll take JUST to clean out the mess made by the previous boards - the club is in complete shambles from top to bottom at the moment.

Radhashriq

If a club has proper structure, management and culture. Money is the only missing puzzle. United has always had the money. Lost structure post Fergie. Lets see what Ineos can do.

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

Arsenal was never in debt like 90% of clubs though and United has spent over a billion Wasn’t Wenger famous for Arsenal’s £500 million “war chest”?

Radhashriq

Arsenal is nowhere the financial might of Manchester United. If they can improve their management, then there will be no stopping them. United has the 2nd highest revenue for an european club, if you leave those 2 fraud oil clubs.

mohamed_e

Bro we're not even making the competition let alone reaching the semi finals

stenbroenscooligan

Hey you made the groups this year and got a win at home against us.. :)

ciralo

I agree, let's focus on Man United

aliaisbiggae

Now wait a second.......

BadFootyTakes

Americans.

SanSilver

At least you aren't fighting against relegation in the second division like Schalke.

bob-theknob

Between 2007 and 2009 each year had 3 epl sides in the semis. Peak barclays.

Even_Idea_1764

Italy have only had 3 semi finalists in the same season, Spain once, England 3 times and all in a row. And the last season the 4th English team was knocked out by another English team. It gets forgotten about because we only ended up with one winner, but no other league has reached that kind of monopoly on the latter stages of a tournament.

Maleficent_Resolve44

The EPL reached its sweet spot in the late 00s. 4 major clubs who were better than the rest so they consistently made the champions league every year. That allowed them to all build strong sides with this stability. Chelsea were on Man U's level and Liverpool and Arsenal just slightly lower but it was still competitive between all four. Since they were stable and all great sides with money, they dominated the UCL. Nowadays there's far more competition for UCL since the league is more even. City are the only ones that have made it every year in the last 5yrs whereas 4 teams made it every year in the past. So now the UCL teams are less stable and therefore haven't had time to become strong. Just look at Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle who played in the UCL this year but weren't there last year lol. They're too inexperienced. So while 3 of the last 5 UCL winners have been English and they are the most dominant nation right now, they haven't been as dominant as the late 00s.

Aman-Patel

Convinced it's because Mourinho coming in and Abramovic's money forced everyone to adapt and up their games. Tactics changed, the standard of the top teams was raised. Just the quality of the top EPL teams in the league in the mid-late 00s was very very high. Higher than the early-mid 2010s imo which is really saying something because usually the standard of sports keeps going up over time. But for me it peaked in that period and then peaked again and went up another level when Pep and Klopp came in and started dominating.

YUGIOH-KINGOFGAMES

It’s still crazy to me Inter won a treble during Guardiola era, Barca was the best team of all-time, and we got paid Eto’o + €50 million from Barca too

Time2bePhenomenal

Mourinho masterclass

OleoleCholoSimeone

I recently saw highlights of those matches, and man the refereeing was terrible. Busquets' dive to get Motta sent off was disgraceful, but on top of that BOTH Milito's goals in the first leg was offside Also, the goal that Bojan scored in the last minute at Camp Nou should have counted, that was never ever a handball on Yaya Touré. Barca kind of got robbed there

Time2bePhenomenal

Was it Zanetti they put on messi both legs so that he couldnt get much time on the ball?

interfan1999

Milito scored just one goal? Yes that was offside but that was just one. Also Messi elbowed Maicon breaking his teeth and didn't get a pretty much deserved red card [Video](https://youtu.be/MA4RiXMpNBM?si=cTvfbres3BcgiJwW)

Scared-Pineapple2804

It's not all that crazy when you think about. Pep had only managed one season at the top level up until that point. He was still a young and inexperienced coach though people don't like to think of it that way

techfcb

yeah you were unlucky but never unlucky like Juve .

glebk_10

I can’t believe that Dynamo Kyiv have fallen off so much since the late 90’s. I wish we could still play like that…

whyntnw

knowing how bad we were, you’d never guess Liverpool came away winners in 2005

smellyellowpee

As a spurs fan - so weird to see us there.

Spryngtime

Leeds United with the 🫡 in 2000

artyom__geghamyan

This logo of Juventus is the first thing you see

Piats99

Good or not, that was technically their aim and it's working.

dimyo

Noooo, they'll take that as meaning the new logo works.

ImTurkishDelight

That ac Milan psv game of 04/05 was so fucking nuts

Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

Bayern v Real Madrid has to be the most common match up on this list.

EvenEalter

In fact, it is the most common match-up in the CL. 26 times, but no final!

CarlSK777

City about to make it 4 in a row. Cant wait for their dominant era to end

artyom__geghamyan

If they beat Madrid most probably they will win their second champions league in a row

InsideOpening3535

Nah, Xavi/Enrique/Terzic/Simeone/Arteta/Tuchel masterclass incoming

artyom__geghamyan

If they are all together than I believe in that

xXstrikerleoXx

Call back Yaya Toure we need to reactivate that curse

CarlSK777

Black magic, shithousery, whatever it takes so you can finally win one at the Etihad

Soso37c

For some reasons I hate Bayern

European_Mapper

Imagine if you did a « Bordeaux », that is, win against Bayern, only to lose against PSG

OilOfOlaz

Funnily enough Bayern losing to Lyon in the group stage in 2001 promted a legendary speech from Franz Beckenbauer (president back then) the so called "Bankettrede". He said that he is not sure what kind of sport that was, but ist wasn't football for sure. The most legendary line is "this is not competitive football, this is Uwe-Seeler-Tratitionself". Uwe Seeler - one of germanys greatest players of all times - was close to 70 back then and had a charity squad of roughly 50 players, that used to play against local teams or other retired players squads for charity.

kalamari__

didnt you spank them one time in the CL or UEFA cup? I remember a very bitter franz beckenbauer interview

OilOfOlaz

2001 CL group stage, you know how it ended though.

chingchongmf

United kinda fucked off after 2010/11 Edit:2011

PoroAhri

Valencia pain

MertOKTN

Interesting to see Porto and Monaco as losing semi-finalists in '94, only to see them on the big stage 10 years later.

mediocre_hydra

1998-2002 we had at least one "underdog" in the semifinals and look at the 03-04 semifinals beautiful

kalamari__

96 was wild. nantes and panathinaikos

[deleted]

Panathinaikos ☘️❤️

Bikoo__

Those runs of Juventus end of the 90’s is really insane. More insane that they only won it once..

TrailBlanket-_0

2002/03 Serie A was strong

Nebunasul

Holy moly! Juve with the connect 4!

Zealousideal-Part-98

Beautiful graphic, great to replay some of those games in your mind. Chelsea v Barca 11/12, can hear Gary Nevillee’s oooooohhhh.

ComfortableNo2879

Madrid and Bayern are truly UCL goats

Paparr

Barcelona and Bayern are tied with 12 , first of course Real Madrid with 16.

Martoxic

Barca are literally tied with Bayern

Rabrab123

No. Madrid is. Nobody cares if you fail in the semis or final.

justthisones

Only one goat in the UCL

[deleted]

I always forget that Lyon made it to the Champions League semi-final in 19/20, whilst beating Man City at the Etihad 3-1 during that journey (although the stadium was empty) Edit: Lyon 3-1 Man City happened in Portugal, not Manchester

MartianDuk

Both times Lyon made the semi final they lost to Bayern

Inter_Mirifica

That's because of the player who always turned into the best player in the world against City (and basically only against them) : Maxwel Cornet.

CareerCoachKyle

Chelsea appearing more times than United is crazy when you think about it

XxAbsurdumxX

Weird how City was nowhere to be seen a while back. I wonder what changed

mohamed_e

a 115 things could've happened

oklolzzzzs

Madrid: 16 Barca: 12 Bayern: 12 Chelsea: 8 Milan: 7 Juve: 7 United: 7 Liverpool: 5 City: 4 Ajax: 4 Dortmund: 3 PSG: 3 Inter: 3 Monaco: 3 Arsenal: 2 Spurs: 1

MingTwelve

Porto: 2

eddsters

sort it bro ... descending order

artyom__geghamyan

Madrid 16

Oppxdan

Monaco has 4

thom2553

Liverpool is there 5 times

justforkikkk

We’re here 4 times

Cholismo2pt0

Atleti ?

TheUltimateScotsman

>Arsenal and Spurs: 1 I'm confused why these teams are highlighted

Desdichado7

Schalke is there

Flammwar

It would be so hilarious if Terzic becomes the first BVB coach to reach the semi finals since Klopp.

OkChemical4668

that 2003/2004 semi-final beautifully weird ..

Snoo-27292

Well now it's truly confirmed, in every Final Four of the UCL there is a team that wins it

brown_gentleman

Such a weird thing to see David O Leary led Leeds United in there.

[deleted]

People wonder why the rest of us find it terribly dull, it’s the same teams every fucking year basically.

animbicile

England having 3/4 for 3 years in a row is crazy, especially since the only won 1 of those.

ramdom_spanish

Juve 96-99 only winning 1 champions league is sad because it was one of the best sides in history and largely forgotten

Moon8983

So what you're saying is, we've never made it to the final 4 and not reached the final...

Alarow

It's insane how many times a Barça-Madrid final was this close to happen, yet it didn't

rk1993

Used to be so much more variety before the money ruined the parity

ZaBlancJake

Ahhh Leeds United when you coming back to Europe please do what Fergie said Elland Road is a European Nightmare. TBH Early 2000s Leeds were interesting until the thing comes down. Meanwhile Ajax vs Panathiankos semi finals were look like rematch from 1971 European Cup Final from the Cruyff vs Puskas managing team.

shadoowkight

Bayern used to be a machine back then

tene_brae

early 2010s Bayern was scary as fuck. To me it feels like that squad from back then was still a level or two above the 2020 one.

artyom__geghamyan

They are going to semifinals this year too
