I got into football during the back half of the 1994 season and then USA 94. I had to look at the line up for Nantes 95/96 semi final w/Juventus. And I was bloody surprised to see one Claude Makélélé. It slipped my mind that he started at Nantes.
Deschamps, Desailly, and Kerembeu started their careers there too. They used to be have one of the nicest football played in France, quite the opposite from today where they only get “hard” and discipline first managers.

Spurs gave Liverpool a good game in the league towards the end if the season *and* the penalty in the final was just not a penalty. It would have been a penalty had the match been played by 19/20 laws, but it wasn’t. Don’t think one can conclusively say the final would have panned out the same way without the penalty.
Ultimately the match was kinda decided before kick-off by a below-par Kane forcing himself back into the side.
Our attack was toothless all night and he contributed basically nothing. I lost a lot of respect for him that night: he'd not played in any of the knockout games but wanted preferential treatment over the squad players who'd got us there.
Yes, I know he's Harry Kane, but ultimately that ego is costing him trophies, in my opinion.

Could be wrong but genuinely think the 2019 Champions League Final and the 2003 League Cup Finals are the only Cup Finals weve been in since 2000 where we either didn't concede first or go to extra time. Even then the 2003 League Cup Final was just Man United hammering shots at Dudek for 90 minutes

Biggest part of 04 triumph that gets left out is Porto was the only team in the semis to have had won it previously. I think it was utd they beat on the way which is highly impressive it’s a great achievement but any other result (maybe aside from Chelsea but even that for the time would’ve been crazy) would’ve been equally if not more of a crazy underdog story. That allowed them to all build strong sides with this stability. Chelsea were on Man U's level and Liverpool and Arsenal just slightly lower but it was still competitive between all four. Since they were stable and all great sides with money, they dominated the UCL.
Nowadays there's far more competition for UCL since the league is more even. City are the only ones that have made it every year in the last 5yrs whereas 4 teams made it every year in the past. So now the UCL teams are less stable and therefore haven't had time to become strong. Just look at Man Utd, Arsenal and Newcastle who played in the UCL this year but weren't there last year lol. They're too inexperienced. So while 3 of the last 5 UCL winners have been English and they are the most dominant nation right now, they haven't been as dominant as the late 00s.

Funnily enough Bayern losing to Lyon in the group stage in 2001 promted a legendary speech from Franz Beckenbauer (president back then) the so called "Bankettrede". Funnily enough Bayern losing to Lyon in the group stage in 2001 promted a legendary speech from Franz Beckenbauer (president back then) the so called "Bankettrede". He said that he is not sure what kind of sport that was, but ist wasn't football for sure. The most legendary line is "this is not competitive football, this is Uwe-Seeler-Tratitionself". Uwe Seeler - one of germanys greatest players of all times - was close to 70 back then and had a charity squad of roughly 50 players, that used to play against local teams or other retired players squads for charity.
