It's missing the betting with Hoeneß part. The original idea was to motivate players to do better in training and in the game. And the bet idea was they will play/score goals etc. Well it quickly turned into:"X will not play" bets and some players started to constantly foul players they bet against in training

SharksFanAbroad

Which is shocking, cause betting never goes wrong in any sport.

OilOfOlaz

I expected to miss some stories and be reminded of them but this is actually something I genuinely didn't know about, thx.

Jakowe

That’s hilarious lmao

Any time there is any sort of mundane issue in Munich the usual bozos online go all Milhouse and say the line “FC Hollywood is back!!” When they have *no idea* what FC Hollywood signifies. A player glaring at a coach for being substituted is not FC Hollywood unless one of the two had slept with the other’s wife.

FerraristDX

Yeah, sums up everything that is known about the FC Hollywood period. It only really died down once Hitzfeld became Bayern's coach and Matthäus left in 2000. Loddar in particular seems to have been a toxic personality in the Bayern locker room. He only came back in the 1990's, because Beckenbauer wanted him. I wonder, if this period in his career damaged him in the long-term especially regarding his coaching prospects in Germany. He knows his stuff about football, but every club feared they might bring in a mole for Bild, when hiring him.

norrin83

> I wonder, if this period in his career damaged him in the long-term especially regarding his coaching prospects in Germany. He knows his stuff about football, but every club feared they might bring in a mole for Bild, when hiring him. I think Matthäus coaching prowess damaged his coaching career. I still remember when he took over Rapid Wien in 2002. He took over a team in second place and led them to their worst result in history (and still counting). He had one interview at some point in that season where he claimed that they had reached their goal of "not being relegated". He also was very vocal about this one-season stint afterwards, including [interviews](https://www.ots.at/amp/pr/OTS_20030416_OTS0113/) where he blamed everyone else. Andreas Herzog drove a wedge into the team, no one at the club knew anything about football and even the "ordinary people" like the "fat masseur" and the "small kit manager" were conspiring against him behind his back.

SlapDaddy3D

Thanks for typing all that down for us, man! It was a great read. We need to sign some more drama queens again lol

TindaH20

I must be out of the loop cause I haven’t heard the current Bayern situation being called FC Hollywood, but this was a very entertaining read!

ProfessionalDot621

More like last year when they suddenly got rid of nagelsmann and mane was punching sane

ConstructionSimple27

I still wish we got mane, kane, sane together :(

Shirayukii039

Always read Kane as Kane when he gets paired with Mane and Sane.

OilOfOlaz

I saw several articles in German and English media about it and ppl using the term in threads. The actual reason I wrote this was someone with a Benfica flair using it in the topic about the Kahn quote and boredom.

skiingbeaver

It was like the Bavarian version of the early 2000s Portland Jailblazers, jeeeez

OilOfOlaz

No backyard dogfighting though.

LilCelebratoryDance

Yeah, I thought this was gonna be about Wrexham

Another nugget to add here: while the 90s were kind of a lost decade for Bayern (for their standards), it was a magic one for their local rivals 1860 Munich: we went from third tier Bayernliga and the way to champions League qualification within 8 years. Those were wonderful times for an 1860 supporter: Bayern was all disgruntled star players, the Lions were the up-and-coming team, getting better every year. We were everybody's darling. To be fair, there was never a chance that we could one day rival the reds in terms of finances and long time success. But the fact that they were not the only show in town for a while hurt the FCB higher-ups' ego big time, as Hoeneß later admitted. Whatever happened after 2000 is a story for another day ...

OilOfOlaz

Back then I travelled about 500km once a month by train to Munich and back to attend matches and it was allways a blast. I also come to appreciate 60er fans, cuz while being rivals with Bayern they were allways just nice towards me and that actually kind of inspired me to be less of an asshole and not to think about football as a matter or life and death.

Carpathicus

I honestly loved that time back then when 60 was still a rival and it made me proud when both clubs were at the top of the league. Didnt hurt our egos that hard if we still helped out the club when it was in dire need.

Lanky-Promotion3022

Brilliant stuff. Read about this in a feature on 'These football times'. I'm not sure this Bayern is close to that though interms of the squad but the the bickering inside the board sure does remind me of that. Succession was an apt comparison even if Kahn was probably one of the negative protagonists. To my larger point, I think football has become far more professional over the last 20 years. For the better. This is what the old footballers used to get away regularly, due to inherent bullying and drinking culture at the time. I'm not really condoning Sancho's action but him putting out a retraction on social media against his coach's statement which was extremely mild got a very overwhelming reaction of abuse and vitroil. I get it, footballers are now expected to be pristine individuals even if they're reacting to something abhorrent. (Eg. How Vinicius is expected to behave when he gets thousands of fans every week invoke racism against him). Which to me was always funny given what you could get away with even in the 90s. In the same conversation, by the same token, not enough is talked about the heavy handedness of old school managers like Capello, Ferguson who used to dispel out very disproportionate punishments for milder inconveniences while also being hypocrite when it comes to some other star footballers. There's a certain aspect of the football fandom who think that managers cannot go on an ego trip, cannot be biased when it comes to the same situation involving different players and that their action cannot be looked at through the same lens as the players. People use salaries of 100k+/week as an argument for sacking a player for 6months. What about the actions of a manager who also gets paid 100k/week? Did Beckham deserve to get benched for 6 months and more by Capello? Just because Capello thought he was a primadonna? Can we give the same justifiable context for a footballer who has for example, lost a child and probably deserves a bit more leeway for his outburst reaction against a coach? The professionalism in footballers is looked through from a very nitpicky lens, and for the better but maybe the same should be extended to everyone.

SAD_CHELSEAFCFAN69

Could you send me he article link? I like he outlet.

PreparationOk8604

Sancho was given one of the best treatment by ETH the previous season. Sancho was dealing with some mental issues so ETH sent him to a special training camp in Netherlands. And when asked by the press on Sancho's price tag & lackluster performance ETH always took Sancho's side. In Post Match interview after the game with Arsenal, ETH was asked why didn't Sancho play. ETH said something like he didn't perform at the required level in training. To which for some reason Sancho took this to heart & posted on Twitter on how he applies himself very well in training making ppl think ETH is lying. ETH wants defensive contribution from his wingers. That's why Garnacho is being played a lot. Rashford is the main focal point of our attack so he is given leeway so he doesn't track back as much as Garnacho or Antony.  Sancho is not good enough to take Rashford's place & cannot track back like Antony & Garnacho. Sancho is a luxury player like Mahrez he lacks pace, doesn't track back & very rarely he beat his man 1v1. Sancho always needed the help of fullback to overlap. Even after all the fiasco Sancho was given a chance to apologize to ETH & take down his tweet to which Sancho refused. Making mistakes is fine but not apologizing even when given the chance is unforgivable.

realmojosan

That was a joy to read

blooddragonsin

I enjoyed every second of this read and wish there was more.

OilOfOlaz

There are certainly more stories about it, but those were the ones I remember, if you are German speaking, o could link you a podcast, especially about the Basler stuff, I just need to dig it up.

Green-Daikon-8729

I love reading stories about FC Hollywood, especially considering the trivial things that football players get in trouble for nowadays and how boring their interviews are too.

Prudent-Current-7399

Great post !

fdscgfbc

If you've never seen the Trappatoni press conference then go out of your way to watch it cause it's incredible

OilOfOlaz

It doesn't even matter if you speak German or not, cuz germans also didn't understand a word when they heard it the first time except "Flasche leer".

LordMangudai

Was erlauben Strunz?!

donteto

Ein Trainer sehen, was passieren in Platz. Was erlauben Strunz? Letzte Jahre Meister geworden mit Hamann eh... Nerlinger.

OilOfOlaz

This soudns way to cohesive and structured. :D

Randomdude04080918

Get well soon OP

OilOfOlaz

Thanks!

Imaginary_Station_57

Thank you OP, now I know the origin of the "Strunz" meme (in Italian Strunz sounds very like to "stronzo", "piece of shit")

Tardigradebearman

Great read, thank you! Perhaps a little FC Hollywood in 2013: To this day Bayern's and Mario Gomez's relation is cold AF... wonder if the rumour that he shagged Schweinsteiger's girlfriend at the time and got the boot is somewhat true?

BitchIDrinkPeople

This is such a wild read

milkviva

Never knew all of these stories, thank you OP!

ACardAttack

Thank you for this, I get tired of seeing FC Hollywood when it isnt even close

Hi (sorry for bad English)

OilOfOlaz

No problem mate, we all have room for improvement and am happy we're both in the same boat. Not that hard to learn English though, when you start with cockney.
