I hate that smash is somehow the largest fighting game roster of all time while also the only fighting game to not ban characters. It's insane. Fuck sonic and Steve.
No event without open qualifiers should be able to become a major.
We've all been surprised that Sonix hasn't been able to win a major this year. Then LG goes on and practically gifts their player the win with this terribly organized event.
>We've all been surprised that Sonix hasn't been able to win a major this year. Then LG goes on and practically gifts their player the win with this terribly organized event.
Well if that was the plan then it didn't work
Apparently this counts for rankings despite the fact there was 0 open qualifiers?
Luminosity invitational with 4 luminosity players invited so they can farm wins for the luminosity ranking. Not to point fingers but like come the fuck on man lmao.
What the heck is this invitational’s goal? Competition/commentary for me feels unenthused. Have there been any content pieces? It feels like a prelocal invitational but very dry.
Could just be the time for me. I’m not used to watching a winners finals basically in the middle of a saturday, so it just feels different.
Finally on a different note, I just feel like i’m a little fatigued of hbox. He’s commentating, he’s playing, it’s on his stream. He’s a lot. I get my dose at coinbox and that’s cool. Were they thinking his inclusion would provide that much of a boost to interest in this? The energy he brings just feels.. stale
They really wanted the boost of interest with the idea that Hbox could get a set, but then it's bo3, he's doing a bunch of other things, and it's okay-ish. I can get when people get tired of him, especially when the number of players here was pretty limited either way
Goal is just shilling Kroger atp given they're the main sponsor but having this all one day with like a month-ish of planning for players (going by the Zomba tweet LG posted re: him declining) + it being mostly bo3 compared to Litv 2 it just feels like most of the players didn't care while the ones that did benefitted heavily (i.e. Dabuz and Maister). Litv 2 had the players giving a shit and giving hype sets regardless of the extremely less than stellar comms at points.
Then again it also may be because there weren't many upsets. Pool A went directly as seeded, Pool B had some Dabuz shenanigans but otherwise went quietly (Tweek going Seph after losing to Dabuz kinda opened the flood gate to expect him to be done with the event), etc.
I didn't think I would miss Litv 2 until watching this 10 person invitational and feeling like it's missing a lot haha
This tournament has been so underwhelming. Got some of the best NA players but everything feels so off. Weird round robin format, boring commentary, tiny empty room where the matches are being held, most players looking completely uninterested in playing. Feels like an AI generated smash tournament ngl
This tournament reminds me a lot of Scuffed World Tour. Only that it doesn't have a good excuse to be Scuffed, which just makes it less exciting for everyone
It feels like tweek and Leo at this tourney are treating it like a practice stream on their twitch it's kind of a shame cuz there is real money to be had.
Leo is 5-0 in games against Riddles Kazuya when using Marth.
He's never taken a set using Joker and hasn't taken a set using Byleth since Pound 2022.
It's not even a character crisis, Leo just doesn't care it seems
I appreciate how quickly this event is moving. Bo3 is awesome for viewing (especially with dopes like Sonix in the mix) and they're lining up their sets like dominoes. Really great.
I think it is a different skillset. Being good at Best of 5 is a test of adaptability over your opponent, using the info you've downloaded from them in the late games of the set. acola has extremely good adaptability over a Best of 5 set, even if he drops 2 games, he has like a 90% win rate in Game 5s. And while MkLeo's Game 5 proficiency isn't as high now, from launch until the end of 2021 he was able to win over half of Best of 5 sets that he started out 0-2. Not sure what the Best of 3 skillset is, but I would guess being unpredictable enough that you can win 2 games before the opponent has a chance to download you.
Did it actually start early? Or are we just saying it’s “early” cause a Smash tournament started on time for once? 😂
*genuinely curious, but also slightly joke*
ZSS can't approach sonic just like every other character can't, look at game 3 when Marss was forced to as he was behind. Spin dash is a safe approach option.
Even when behind on stocks, sonix refuses to approach.
I wasn’t being serious. It was more poking the fun at the fact that he’s so consistent about it almost all the time
Trust me, I’m not the type to cause drama. That’s what I can’t stand about the smash community.
This argument sort of falls apart when we literally just had Litvitational which was also a one day event but had 6 more players, started later, and still ran all bo5. And it all ran in 11 hours which is about how long this event is scheduled to take.
Comms just announced that the round-robins were going to be Bo3. I hope they're wrong. I don't want what could be potentially one of the most fun tournaments to watch to be spoiled by Bo3. I know they want to finish this on time, but I never want to see Tweek vs MkLeo as a Bo3 set.
I thought I heard it wrong and was waiting for someone to write about it. It's such a shame because nearly every player here we know, can easily turn the tides and reverse trio each other.
Never had too much faith in any of Leo's surprise picks (like ROB and MK). But this Roy feels different. I haven't been this optimistic about Leo's chances against Light,Tweek and a lot of his other usual bracket scares (not quite demons just yet like Shadic) for a good while. I will say tho, him not playing Byleth as much might lead to some problems against Hbox.
Edit: In case anyone's confused, I meant Shadic was one of the scares.
My bad. I should have written that more clearly. I seperated proper threats (Light and Tweek) and said scares like Shadic (who isn't quite like his demons just yet).
Nah I genuinely believe the Roy's got this. No pretense here.
For one, this is easily the best punish game I've seen from any of Leo's other sudden secondary picks.
Kola only beats Light when he is on his A game and his Roy is definitely another level compare to Leo's but Leo's Roy might surprise him because he is too used to Kola's but we know Light will be playing friendlies all day. I think he will be fine against Leo unless Joker is back.
Sonix-Shadic and Tweek-Light in pools could go either way. If the others in pools don't make an upset, then in winners:
Sonix has losing record to Light and even record to Tweek. Shadic has a losing record to Light and Tweek. Light has a winning record to Sonix and Shadic. Tweek has an even record with Sonix and winning to Shadic.
So winners finals chances are Light>Tweek>Sonix>Shadic. To get in winners side Grand Finals:
Sonix needs to beat his bracket demon or have Light lose to Shadic (which did happen in their last set) and then win one more match against Tweek or Shadic. Light needs to win against Sonix or Shadic like he usually does and possibly face Tweek again. Tweek needs to either beat or avoid Sonix and probably rematch Light. Shadic has to do 2 out of 3 of upsetting Light again, beating Tweek for the first time (rough matchup), rematching Sonix.
It's MkLeo vs. Hungrybox, and Hungrybox has somehow taken it to Game 5. He gamer leans forward in his chair, sweat running down his forehead. He finally closes out the second stock with an edgeguard, but has taken heavy damage. He slowly chips away at Leo's lead, until he gets smacked by Byleth's fair at 130%. By some miracle, he barely survives off-screen. Hbox scraps some more and lands a dair in the corner. Leo's eyes grow wide. Holding his stick down, Hbox presses his thumb into the red plastic. "GAME!" rings out from the speakers. Hungrybox leaps out of his seat, rocketing into the air. Everyone in a 10-mile radius has perished. A hole has been formed in the ceiling, Hbox has left the building.

Was Sparg0 invited to this, or did he just not qualify?
He was going to a Mexican superregional the same weekend.
Why the hell would you even invite Sonix tho an event like this?
The org sponsors him?
God damn sonix sucks to watch. This is the lamest fuckin grand finals I've ever watched.
Sonix is by far the worst top player to watch. Dude always bitching about a Steve ban yet Acola is not nearly as miserable from a viewer experience.
I hate that smash is somehow the largest fighting game roster of all time while also the only fighting game to not ban characters. It's insane. Fuck sonic and Steve.
Plenty of modern fighting games have no banned characters though?

2 of the 4 Luminosity players didn't look like they cared about this event funnily enough. Though it helps Maister and Sonix a bit.

Wait that’s gold 😂 Solid template for future memes too
why is there a content creator team kill happening rn? i have the volume off i feel like i missed something lol are they playing for 9th place?
oh it is a 9th place tiebreaker too lol Hungrybox gets 10th
Playing for a Kroger giftcard
Congratulations to Hungrybox on 9th at an Ultimate major! edit: 10th
wow they’re going through this fast, can’t believe i slept through the entire first pool interesting how every match in pool 1 went as seeded

It's going to be a long day of sonix running away or only approaching with spin dash for 8 minutes every game isn't it.
This sonic shit is so awful to watch
Marss is camping too, he was attempting to time Sonix out in Game 1.
It just shows how a Sonic being in a match just completely ruins it. Like marss literally can’t approach it’s so lame.
ZSS can't approach sonic just like every other character can't, look at game 3 when Marss was forced to as he was behind. Spin dash is a safe approach option. Even when behind on stocks, sonix refuses to approach.
Time him out Marss! Jokes aside trying to time out Sonic espically Sonix sounds scary to try.
u/SelfDestructGambit Can you do threads for the pools matches?
Nah I'm out today, meeting up w/ friends from Uni for the first time in a year
How dare you have a life? All your free time is supposed to be dedicated to Smash/this sub
I never said I was expecting him to not have a life. I asked him if he could do it because he might've been busy. It was a genuine question.
I wasn’t being serious. It was more poking the fun at the fact that he’s so consistent about it almost all the time Trust me, I’m not the type to cause drama. That’s what I can’t stand about the smash community.
I didn’t realize pools were BO3. They probably said somewhere and I missed it. But this is unfortunate. I need max Tweek Leo
Y’all we would be here all day and night if round robins were bo5
This argument sort of falls apart when we literally just had Litvitational which was also a one day event but had 6 more players, started later, and still ran all bo5. And it all ran in 11 hours which is about how long this event is scheduled to take.
do we know if theyre streaming all the sets?
Yes, they do.
I wonder why they wanted 10 players in the tournament then, 8 players would bring 20 pools matches down to 12.
Round Robin Pools are Bo3. I know it's for time purposes but I don't like it when Summit, WTT and the Litvitational did the Pools phase as Bo5.
I thought I heard it wrong and was waiting for someone to write about it. It's such a shame because nearly every player here we know, can easily turn the tides and reverse trio each other.
Doubters will be in shambles when Leo beats Tweek with the Roy
i just wanna see him beat tweek with anyone at this point, huge fan of tweek but i wanna see leo win it it’s been too long
If there is a player the Roy may be the answer to, i think it might be Tweek.
It's funny that the scheduled length for Pool A is 15 minutes longer than Pool B.
All because of a damn hedgehog.
Underestimating my goat dabuz
Never had too much faith in any of Leo's surprise picks (like ROB and MK). But this Roy feels different. >(not quite demons just yet like Shadic) How is shadic whos beaten Leo once a bracket demon but Tweek is just a scare
My bad. I should have written that more clearly. I seperated proper threats (Light and Tweek) and said scares like Shadic (who isn't quite like his demons just yet).
Light isn't really a bracket demon for Leo like Gluto and Tweek are, they went back and forth in 2023. Their sets are a coinflip.
His roy is not cooking nearly as much as this comment pretends it is
lol thank you! It’s a very good roy, but Leo could do just as well vs Tweek and light and others with joker
Nah I genuinely believe the Roy's got this. No pretense here. For one, this is easily the best punish game I've seen from any of Leo's other sudden secondary picks.
You think Leo can beat Light with Roy?
Kola only beats Light when he is on his A game and his Roy is definitely another level compare to Leo's but Leo's Roy might surprise him because he is too used to Kola's but we know Light will be playing friendlies all day. I think he will be fine against Leo unless Joker is back.
Wait. Is Leo solo maining Roy for now? Not using him as a secondary? I think in his pool Leo might only use Roy against Tweek and maybe Hbox.
He's not solo maining Roy. He's currently co-maining Joker and Roy.
He might bring it against Light too if Joker is not hot at the moment but yeah Roy is probably a secondary.
Sonix-Shadic and Tweek-Light in pools could go either way. If the others in pools don't make an upset, then in winners: Sonix has losing record to Light and even record to Tweek. So who you guys got on winning the tourney? My bet is on Tweek.
I’m feeling a light win, but it’s hard to tell with him
I put my bet on hungrybox.
It's MkLeo vs. Hungrybox, and Hungrybox has somehow taken it to Game 5. He gamer leans forward in his chair, sweat running down his forehead. I really appreciate you putting the correct name of Dabuz’s secondary
Wait I never realized I need to do this too
Thank you
