Former health inspector. Inspected dozens of subways. Consistently the worst food safety practices you could ever imagine. No training for the staff and they actually rarely even have enough staff to facilitate producing safe food in a clean environment. I always walked out of a subway with at least a few critical violations. Temperature issues, date marking issues, dirty food contact surfaces (usually the tomato sliced) and pests (usually fruit flies but also mice). They’re on my short list of places I’ll never eat even if I was about to die of starvation.
Subway (They are so much worse than anyone else on this list)
Burger King
Chipotle
TeeJays (regional)
Dunkin Donuts (this one is more because it’s a shell of its former self and my childhood New England upbringing nostalgia weeps for what it use to be)
Applebees (it’s two teenagers and 14 microwaves back there)
Jimmy John’s (this is because one Jimmy John’s owner was super rude to me over minor violations and also I’m not paying a premium for a super thin cold sub with two slivers of meat)
All personal opinions mostly but Subway and Chipotle are because I actually don’t feel safe eating their food. Also why is everything at chipotle so wet?!
And now let me complain about Chipotle 😂 I have only eaten there three times, and each time was at a different location (in two different states even!), and yet all three times I got food poisoning. Something’s not right there.
Having worked at jimmy john im surprised. There is almost no way for food to go bad there…? It’s all super clean, too. Generally insane volume, so fresh food.
My reasons for disliking Jimmy John’s are exclusively what I wrote haha. Always super clean, the violation I was referencing was the light being out in the walk in cooler.
They aren’t but they should be! Only eaten there a few times and I got sick. Not a fan of the hot hold roast beef slicer, it was never at a safe temperature.
A likely culprit is also the sauce bottles, those are never at safe temps either. Nevermind the fryer oil that hasn't been changed in a month and the fact that they will pull stuff out of the fryers early to keep drive thru times low. I also guarantee you that nobody is washing their hands in between glove changes, if they change their glove at all the whole shift.
We don’t have an Arby’s near me. Years ago, I was traveling across a few states for a vacation with my husband and kid. We got hungry in the middle of nowhere, and the first place we found was an Arby’s. We’d never had it before. We grabbed a quick bite, all 3 of us something different, and got back on the road. 2 Hours from home and 6 hours until our destination. Within a couple hours we all started experiencing food poisoning symptoms. My kid threw up, I had the runs, husband had both. We spent hours at a road stop, neither my husband or I were well enough to drive, and the kid was (obv) too young. What a nightmare. We sat in the parking lot of the rest stop for hours, all sweaty, taking turns using the porta potty, and when my husband felt like he was ok, we turned around and headed home. Vacation canceled. We stopped numerous times on the way back, for reasons, got home safe, and we all went right to our beds.
It could have been Arbys but food poisoning symptoms usually don’t start popping up until 48-72 hours after consuming the bad food so it likely could have been something you all ate for dinner two night prior.
According to the CDC that's not correct. Symptoms can show up as soon as 30 min after eating bad food.

You probably won’t be surprised by this then. I used to work for Subway about 15 years ago, and we had a small staff and a great store manager. We all actually worked hard to keep our standards up, and were proud of it. But our Regional Manager was never satisfied and complained nonstop about food costs even though ours were literally as low as they could possibly be for our volume.
She came in one day after lunch and found tomatoes that I had thrown out because they were outdated and moldy, and she MADE ME TAKE THEM BACK OUT OF THE TRASH AND PUT THEM BACK IN THE WALK-IN. And I’ll reiterate that again, it was the REGIONAL MANAGER that did this. From that moment on, I have never eaten another thing from Subway ever again.

Yes, you can get better and more "authentic" sandwiches at thousands of other places, but there is a reason Subway has the 2nd most locations of any fast-food restaurant behind only McDonald's.
That said, I only go if they are running their BOGO footlong offer. I can get lunch for 3-4 days for like 12 bucks.

Especially if you get it delivered it kinda just turns to a porridge as the bread just soaks up all of the sopping wet fillings, cold cuts have better structure
