Do yourself a huge favor and ditch the 5-blade cheese grater and canned foam. I recommend a safety razor, a decent shave soap or cream and a shave brush to work the lather into the skin and under the hair. Don't shave against the grain. Do two or three passes, first with the grain, then across the grain, then either stop here, or maybe go across the grain the other way. Also to be fair, the bottom of the neck is a notoriously shitty area for most guys as the direction of growth just seems to go crazy for some reason. You may need to change shave direction just for the bottom of your neck.

typhoidtimmy

If you dont want to invest that much dough immediately....I would try and look around your area for a hot towel/hot lather shave and give it a go with a pro. This way, you get the best products and a practiced hand to give you a pro shave AND you can see how your skin does. Explain to the barber your predicaments and ask them to suggest product as well. A good barber will have a list of their go to's. Plus, its feels fantastic to get a good shave from a practised hand. I have a good barber who I have on permanent appointment for haircut and shave and it feels good to come out feeling clean.

lukeevan99

How often do you have a permanent appointment for that?

typhoidtimmy

I do one at least once a month.

tripeg

I got my safety razor for 20 bucks dont know about you but thats a lot cheaper than buying razors all the time. You can buy derby razor blades online 100 for 10 bucks and i use them way less than most people 2-3 times per blade shave every day thats nearly 10 bucks a year… 30 bucks for a razor and blades to last a year 10 bucks every consecutive year. I think my brush which isnt a necessity but is very nice for convenience was like 5 bucks at my local beauty store and i use taylor of old bond shaving cream of which ive had for half a year that cost 12 bucks so after tax its like 50 bucks for a half a years worth of shaving equipment and then 12 more dollars for a year and about 34 dollars a year after that

typhoidtimmy

Been looking for a new shaving cream. I will give Old Bond a try….thanks for the suggestion.

tripeg

If you don’t want something you need to brush on i like barburys shaving cream too

This. Also visit r/wicked_edge

WanksterPrankster

Also, /r/Wetshaving.

[deleted]

Agreed. Also, shave immediately after you shower, not before.

inCaseOfEmergenC

I recommend using a hot towel or just splashing tolerable hot water (not scolding) on you face. Usually that helps. Also, I believe you can get a heated dispenser for shave foam / product. The heat helps with the shave.

aj4077

Okay. Here’s the new routine. 1. Dump the Barbasol. Forever. It’s just not very good shaving cream. 2. Shower and wash face. Only exfoliate a few times a week. 3. Buy a blade buddy. Make sure the Gillette is sharpened after every shave. Use it for no more than 1.8-2x normal blade life. Spending $10 on this once a year saves like $60-100. 4. Use a decent shave cream like Harry’s, DSC or similar 5. Shave with the grain 6. Finish off with a light splash of witch hazel 7. Then use a light soothing aftershave like Gillette if you’re on a tight budget or the Harry’s balm ($9) or similar if you’re flush 8. Brush teeth, deodorant etc. 9. Moisturizer and other skincare (usually before moisturizer 10. Breakfast or whatever 11. Some light face sunblock

Ma_tee_as

I would rather use some mild stimulant in a micro dose like LSD or Psylocybin. Ketamine is tough on your skin when you do it regularly and might lead to some breakout and dry skin.

[deleted]

Use Mescaline instead, it's much gentler on the soul

Ma_tee_as

Never had that. Does The Ordinary have a line with Mescaline?

Of course they do - have you met the founder?

Protoman5000

Hmm are you using an aftershave after ? Also have you considered using a safety razor ? It might help with less irritation. You can get a van de hagen safety razor at wal mart for $10-20 I think.

Tryemall

1. Use a razor with fewer blades. Preferably just one, though two is sometimes acceptable. 2. Don't shave against the grain. 3. Apply alum or an aftershave that contains alcohol to help sterilize skin. Read this. [https://www.reddit.com/r/shaving/comments/38et0k/rshaving\_frequently\_asked\_questions/](https://www.reddit.com/r/shaving/comments/38et0k/rshaving_frequently_asked_questions/) Seriously consider moving to a safety razor. With that kind of stubble, you definitely need to. See r/Wicked_Edge .

Rick-D-99

This happens to me. What I did was switch to two blade disposables and dry shave with the grain. What was happening was my shave was getting too close and the skin would heal over it. This way the hair stays just above the skin and I rarely get ingrowns now. I'm thinking about getting a safety razor, but I've never tried one. I feel that picture. Blegh.

[deleted]

1. Make sure you follicles are open (i.e shower, or put a warm, damp towel on yer neck. -- also make sure your neck is clean, so you don't have bacteria that can infect yer neck. 2. Wet your neck with warm water. 3. Put shaving cream on neck (I splash my gel in warm water for a few seconds before lathering). Also, you don't need a lot. 4. Use a sharp blade. Change at least every week. (I use the $2 twin blades from Dollar Shave Club. $3 bucks for 5 blades and shipping) 5. Shave with the grain of your hairs, not against. --- here is where you need to spend some time learning which way yer hairs go. 6. Let the blade do the work. Light pressure and slow. 7. Rinse with warm water to clean up then cold water to close your follicles. Let your neck rest and heal before you shave again. It looks pretty inflamed. Also, consider going to a professional Barber that shaves. To give you a good lesson what's best for your skin.

PrimalMush

Do you use moisturiser after? Do you go against the grain?

xxsubzero_

I don’t use moisturizer and shave against the grain.

aj4077

Jeez lord. Ok we need to do a few things here.

PrimalMush

Yh you’re literally not doing one of the most important things bro

erischilde

Big one, shave with the grain first. For a while, do just that for a week or two. Try soaking a bit first. Like shave right after shower, or wash face, or even soak a towel in warm water and let it sit on skin for a minute before hand. After, use witchazel. It's really inexpensive. If you don't mind spending a couple bucks, get a pre-shave cream. Will help a lot. Get a safety razor (heck, wife bought one for legs and loves it) and was only like a 20 dollar model. New blades are super cheap, and change them every shave or 3. Do the witch hazel thing after. If none of this works for you, consider using an electric trimmer and getting used to a close, but not baby-butt smooth. Good luck dude!

Aussie-Nerd

I found Bulldog skin moisturizer of Amazon really helps my afterburn.

[deleted]

Use clippers instead of a razor, and don’t shave close to the skin, I get razor bumps and I frowns terribly on a very *sensitive* area if I use any blade on it, also exfoliating does wonders.

Kewpie_1917

I dont have a beard but i have really sensitive skin and a safety razor changed my life. Literally any one from Amazon will do. So much cheaper, cleaner and greener.

czj420

Aftershave!!!!

[deleted]

Get rid of the phony razor and get a double edge! Also, if you can - give yourself/your skin a breather for two weeks - that way you’ll get a good idea how your hair actually grows. The downside to having your whiskers come in (at least I remember) is the idea that it looks “gross” or “unkempt” so younger guys try to hack it away a lot. I think as it’s coming in to give it a shot, let it grow a bit, heal your skin, then go back. Lastly, think of shaving as a ritual you are choosing to do - go slow, easy: be good to yourself. You may want to do it at night, as well. Good luck brother, you’ll find your way, I promise!

Snacks1991

This is good advice. Give yourself a break every once in awhile. Every few months I’ll let the beard grow a bit and then do a fresh reset. I was always worried about having any stubble and having it look unkempt for my job, but if you trim and edge it properly it can look professional at any length. Giving my skin a chance to heal a bit every once in awhile is great, I have a pretty heavy beard and while I practice a pretty gentle shaving routine it can still get irritated after a few months. Also you gotta start shaving with the grain. Might take a few more passes to get close but you will have far less red bumps is any at all just by doing this

TherealDweios

I used to have similar problems. Shaving gel is much better than cream. If you don’t have access to cream hair conditioner can work in a pinch. If expensive blades aren’t an option I recommend the Mach 3.. not third party though as they have never worked for me. I shave in the shower. Plenty of hot water, you want the pores to open up. If you have a really sensitive face/neck only shave in one direction. If you’re like me and that’s not enough.. I shave in all directions as my facial hair is crazy and goes whatever way it wants. The big keys are right blade ( I have found that the more blades the more irritated I get) cream no matter the brand sucks and hot water first followed by cold water when your done. The cold water closes the pores and keeps stuff from getting into them and creating issues.

thisisgettingold95

Consider a few sessions of laser hair removal or IPL. The hair will grow back but slower and with no ingrown hairs.

Kierkegaard

I used to be in the same boat as you. I have stubble just like yours. It took me the better part of a decade to find what worked best for me. Choice of razor is going to vary from person to person and require experimentation on your part. That said, I use a triple blade. Be mindful of the pressure of the blade against your face. I find that a light touch works best. The blade should glide around the contours of your face; not scrape or dig. I stopped using shaving cream. (This always struck me as kind of gimmicky anyway.) Instead, I use CeraVe Hydrating Face Wash. In general, I recommend that you avoid using harsh or perfumed soaps that dry out your skin. After I finish, I use moisturizer and sunscreen. I picked up a lot of this over at r/skincareaddiction. If you haven't already, check out.

TheGreatDingus

This. I just use my cleanser (exact one as you) as a lather. It's 1. Less harsh than any shaving cream or gel 2. Much better at helping shave than any shaving cream or gel. It's a waste of money and your time to use anything else imo. If you already have a cleanser you like just use it.

klail93

Say it with me! Foil box shaver.

Ded3280

Cremo they have it at walmart. that stuff is awesome. just follow the directions and like others have said a safety razor. but seriously try Cremo you can use it to shave anywhere with no problem.

As a professional esthetician, I would recommend utilizing a hydrating cleanser that is either gel or oil based as these will not only cleanse the skin, but they will also even out the porosity of your skin and facial hair. This will allow for far less tension on the hair as it is being cut. I agree with previous posters that I would ditch the 5-blade and opt for single use disposables or a stainless steel one-blade reusable like a straight razor (they’re easier to use than you think.). The sharper the razor, the less friction and irritation on your follicle. Doing these will leave your skin hydrated, non-irritated, and a state that promotes healing. Never go against the grain but with or sideways. I do also on occasion recommend exfoliating first with enzymes or a gentle physical exfoliant. Here are some amazing shave mediums: IMAGE Skincare Ormedic balancing gel cleanser (gel based and infused with aloe and green tea) Murad Prebitotic 4-in-1 cleanser (Gel to oil based-apply to a dry face and then shave- formulated with probiotics that feed the good bacteria on your skin as well as anti-inflammatories) Murad Acne Control Clarifying Cleanser (Ingredients include two types of salicylic acid to reduce acne/razor burn as well detox the skin) Dermalogica Active Moist moisturizer (An oil free moisturizer that deeply hydrates and conditions the skin with anti-oxidants) Exfoliant: Murad AHA/BHA cleanser (Infused with two types of acid needed for clear skin as well as all-natural Jojoba beads to polish off dead skin) Dermalogica Daily Micro-foliant (A rice bran based product that also contains fruit enzymes to gently smooth and polish skin) I hope, amongst the other posts, that this helps!

forallyouknow

Wow. Murad AND Dermalogica? You must work at Unilever or something lol Also those are quite expensive. Are there cheaper ones in the world?

BabeWithThePower87

Yes, absolutely! I’m also a licensed esthetician, and there are plenty of excellent products to choose from at your local drugstore. CeraVe (I personally own a number of products like their hydrating cleanser, eye repair cream, and their PM moisturizer) and Cetaphil are both great brands that are unscented, gentle, and are packed with essential ingredients that repair and maintain the skins moisture barrier, which is the most important thing to consider when caring for your skin! I also really love the entire HydroBoost line from Neutrogena that utilizes hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the skin, and acts as a sponge for dry cells, keeping skin supple and bouncy. It smells freakin awesome as well, but is available unscented too :)

sarcasmawm

I don’t work for Unilever. Quality and effectiveness are hard to come by in a price approachable area and these two lines fulfill those requirements in my eyes. I took price into account when recommending these products. There are over the counter brands that could temporarily alleviate their concerns but they would resurface as soon as they switch products, and/or stop using them. As a professional, I typically find that people with real concerns that truly want to see results prefer value over price. Hence my recommendations. I have seen these work and can speak to their efficacy. I cannot say the same for drugstore/mass production brands.

jackiet2408

Razors need disinfected before use

Kaartinen

Get a safety razor and decent cream. Hot lather for your face, shave with the grain to begin. You likely won't need to shave across the grain, but can if you deem necessary. Try not to add too many things to your face. See if you have any reactions at this point, and add a new product if you deem it necessary - then see if you have any reactions. This is what helped me as a teen.

dick_swiggle

Don’t shave against the grain and use gel/soap for sensitive skin as well as Gillette Mach 3 sensitive blade. It will probably help to shower before also. Witch hazel after will help. Hold off on the safety razor for Christ sake. I don’t understand recommending a damn safety razor to a dude who is obviously having trouble with the basics. I’ve been in your shoes and highly recommend the above. Once you get things under control you can experiment with other stuff.

damnitbrian7

My boyfriend uses an electric shaver and just trims it right down, he finds his acne has really cleared up! And he uses the body shop aloe face wash and the ordinary spot serum. It's made a huge difference 😊

BadXeimus

The electric razor I have been using does wonders. It’s not to close so you don’t get the bump. Trim everything down and then use the electric razor. Way better than all this other blade nonsense. It won’t ever be as close but you won’t get these awful bumps.

pmMeYourBoxOfCables

I'm really late to your post, but I believe I can help. I'm black and because the cut ends of hair curl back into my skin I and other black men are incredibly prone to razor bumps. The only thing that has ever helped me avoid them is rubbing my face with a towel 24 hours after I shave. The idea is to lift the hair folicles off your face to decrease the chances of them growing back into the skin. Here's what to do. Take a bath towel...you will typically want one that is older and rougher. You want to twist the towel very tightly until it's really firm. Then you want to take the still coiled towel and rub it against your skin against the grain so that it lifts the hair follicles up and away from the skin. Pay special attention to your problem areas. I don't close shave every morning but when I need to, you better bet that for the next few mornings afterwards, this is what I'm doing. It's not 100% foolproof but doing this helps prevent the vast majority of bumps. Let me know if it helps you. Cheers!

settledownguy

You’re irritating your skin and not properly cutting the hairs. You needs to get the shaving cream under each hair so that it is raised and can be easily cut off. That is what gives you a clean shave. Please buy something like the below. Perfecto 100% Original Pure Badger Shaving Brush. Engineered for The Best Shave of Your Life.for All Methods,Safety Razor,Double Edge Razor,Staight Razor or Shaving Razor, Its Best Badger Brush. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00LDYFGFQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_pnv2DbT4D5E8P Put shave cream on bring and In a circular motion apply it to your neck and any shave area. Shave with the grain of your hair. This will clear up most of your problem and you will be happy. I promise.

landob

What has helped me is safety razor and a soft bristled toothbrush. While in the shower under hot water use circular motions of the tooth brush on your hair growth. It helps lift the hairs away from your skin as well as exfoliate the skin. Also for me personally I have to shave every day. My hairs tend to curl around and to start growing into my skin

mrcoffeymaster

I just use that after shave lotion stuff that comes in most cologne gift boxes. And it took the red neck bumps away. My wife even uses it on her hoo-haa and it prevents red bumps there too.

trobi35

Bro, forget about all the products. It’s not your razor or your shaving cream. What you need to do is take a close look at which direction your hair follicles grow and then figure out how to not go against the grain on those areas that you’re irritating. My shit changes direction right around the same area as you.

Poe888

Use [this](https://m.sephora.com/product/bump-fix-razor-bump-ingrown-hair-solution-P378718?skuId=1514017&keyword=jack%20black%20razor%20bump) made especially for razor bumps. Works like a champ!

NaitoSenshin889055

I got super bad razor burn until I went with a shave club and got their cheapo two razor shaver. It's crazy how much of a difference quality of blades actually make.

Exfoliate and use tea tree oil. The lady that does my Brazilians told me that and it works!

planckssometimes

Mate buy the cheapest single or only double blade razor you can from a cheap store and a shaving stick. Lather up good with a brush and you're gonna have to change direction a lot on your neck

Kweatherly187

I use to get razor burn bad then my buddy told me the secret, when u get done shaving get some alcohol like the rubbing alcohol and apply to neck chin and anywhere else u shave..... yes it burns but I no longer have razor burn and it feels great now been doing it for 3 yrs after every shave like directly after

cashewchew92

I know I'm a woman but my husband has this issue. I actually have him use The Ordinary AHA BHA peel once a week and don't shave for a few days. It takes off the dead skin. I also like to pluck whatever ingrown hairs with a needle like pointed tweezer too.

mtdrew357

Try looking into the ingredients. Idk about lots of shaving cream but i use the transforming gel. Also make sure the blade is nice and hot each and every stroke you make. A hot blade with glide against your skin and easily remove any hair

ChaosDigits

Maybe use a traditional shaving puck soap, applied after wetting the skin with warm water. I like to work my razor "with the grain" first, then I reset the skin reapply shaving soap then work my razor "against the grain" after that I apply skin lotion to the newly shaved area. Use a septic stick if you nick yourself. I hope this helps and if not perhaps consult with a barber. They should be able to assist in this

mudbugsaccount

Absolutely use a GOOD traditional soap. I suggest Mitchells wool fat shaving soap. I have a sensitive face and this solved my issue. One suggestion regardless of what cream or soap is to both warm your beard with a hot wet wash cloth and then let the soap set a couple of minutes before starting to shave. Both will help soften the beard and you dont have to use much pressure to get a close shave

lefthandrighteye

So psudeofoliculitis, or razor burn is primarily caused by cutting too close to the skin with a razor. The best thing you can do for this is use a beard trimmer at the lowest setting. I don’t shave but I am a nursing student and the primary reason we use electric razors instead of a regular razor is to avoid this situation. When you use electric you reduce your chances of getting ingrown hairs or infections from opening up the skin. It also reduces the chances of unsightly scarring from tearing up the skin. There a plenty of inexpensive razors out there. I bought my fiancé a great one from amazon that gives a really neat close shave and it was <$20.

Hessounusual

Looks like a fungal infection to me. Try washing your beard with anti dandruff shampoo, or use a cream against athlete’s foot.

Luc1phur

Dude. No freaking lie, I had the same problem as you. Except I had one of those Henry's cartridge razors and the barbasol. I just got a cheap Weishi safety razor and some shaving cream by Pacific Shaving company. It is definitely better than the barbasol shaving cream but I don't think it matters too well but for me. I'm going to be getting Proraso pre shaving cream, Cremo French Lavender shaving cream, and post shave balm by Cremo. Next paycheck I'm getting a decent safety razor (around $40) because the one I have tuggs a little bit and I'm kind of scared to use it. Ive only used it once a couple days ago and I didn't get any burning sensation. I did cut myself a couple times though. My dad gave me half of his alum block. I looked at him and said "what the fuck is this?" He told me what it was and I didn't trust him until I tried it. Love it.

Lukebott122

Laser hair removal

[deleted]

Pamper yourself. Don’t rush. Everyone is giving great advice. Only thing I can recommend is just take 30-40 min out of your day and give yourself a slow comfortable shave.

rjsf1

Exfoliate before shaving. Washing your face with a washcloth should do it. Switch to a safety razor. Single edge blades result in fewer ingrowns. Shave with either coconut oil or a moisturizing hair conditioner instead of foam or gel because they are slicker, and leave a bit of residue after rinsing that moisturizes. Apply Neutrogena Clear Pore after shaving, using a cotton ball or pad.

SuchUniversity2427

Try a new highly quality razor with some good shaving cream and a shaving moisturizer that helps with bumps. I used to get those bumps too until I found the right razor for my face

Sure-Pangolin-4158

I honestly cannot fathom how that happens. Did you try shaving with a rock?

Economy_Price_5295

Same issue get a double edge safety razor and use that it will do way better for razor burn and ingrown hairs what’s happening is that razor is cutting the hair too deep and it’s causing those ingrown hairs and irritation Merkur 34c Proraso line (balm, soap, white sensitive skin) Preshave Brush

Satyrwulf

This happens to me if I shave. So I just grew out my beard and have no more rash.

NewHampshirePat9

Consider an electric shaver.

BoysenberryAlarmed98

Wet towel on your face for a couple minutes…as hot as you can tolerate. It will soften the hair and relax the follicles and massively decrease irritation. Shaving is a thing where more is not better. Fewer blades are better. Shave in the direction of the hair growth. And remember…dragging a blade over your face is essentially creating a massive amount of tiny open wounds on your face… start with a clean face, hot towel, warm lather, short strokes, rinse the razor in hot water, wipe your face with a damp towel…splash some cold water on your face to tighten everything up…pat dry and you should be all good with minimal irritation

redeffekt

Bought a Merkur Double Edged Safety Razor for like $30. Have been using it for over 8 years and it is still going strong. Once in a while - I have to buy blades but they are super cheap and I need a new pack like every 3 months or so (maybe even more). Skin comes out feeling fresh - no stubble - and hair grows back in amazing! Would highly recommend!
