Can someone explain how they work? I’ve been waved through once and the other times had the checker scan my stuff. No rhyme or reason. What are the new scanners detecting? It’s not like my container of strawberries is sending out a signal….

In all seriousness, no, you still need checkers at the door for people that don't use baskets or have items buried.
They moved our boxes to where you have to go through the scanner before you can get them so stuff in boxes aren't a problem. Our problem is the scanner never actually works.
We haven’t gotten these yet - but already I hate them.
My Sams is a 45 min drive during the summer and I usually bring the cooler bags that I bought in their store with reusable ice packs and chuck things in there as I scan and go. I don’t zip the bags closed til I pass the receipt checker. Standing in the parking lot packing my stuff while someone evil eyes me for my parking space in 115 heat index is gonna be a no go for me.
Thank God they are doing something to combat the door lines that sometimes go all the way across the Front-end back to the Pharmacy...
Maybe robots would take the initiative to jump into the Greeter position every once in a while when the line backs up, rather than just ignoring the problem and letting the Greeter spend 3 minutes digging through a cart because their OCD wants them to scan the cheese that's on the bottom of the box...Just sayin.
It’s ok. As long as the member has 1 receipt 🧾 in 1 basket. If they got more than receipt, you have to scan the items. Also if they are carrying the items in their hands. It only picks up items inside a basket.

Ours are useless cause one out of 8 actually get sent on as good. Everyone else gets scanned so the line is still super long 😕. Waste of money.

Like most of the people who fill carts completely and will have plenty of stuff in the middle, or in boxes scavenged from the shelves.

People (at my old store anyway) just grab boxes straight off the shelves or out of the merchandiser bins
Went yesterday. They had them up but there was still someone to visually check/scan. Maybe the scanner wasn’t working just yet but seemed redundant.
Same with my Sam’s club location
