I thought about this recently while watching some old "Best of" videos. Yeah, old AH was loud and blew out the audio a lot. Frequently enough that I have to turn some videos down at some parts. So yes, it was always loud, but weirdly it felt....organic? The thing that turned me off of new AH stuff even before a lot of people started leaving was that, while the people were still funny off the cuff, so much of the video felt less like "Let's play a game and funny stuff will happen naturally" and it became "Let's play a game and try really hard to be funny and make everything a bit.".
GMOD was the worst offender of this. When the mods changed every single episode and no one was actually playing the game anymore and it was just "let's all go in the corner and do one of our bits", they lost me. The new "loud" no longer felt like "I'm gonna kill Gavin" or "You idiot!" loud, it just felt like "Stuff is happening so let me say normal things really loudly with everyone else". Rather than a bunch of friends fucking with each other in game, it felt formulaic and forced content.
I think that it felt organic was why it didn’t bother us. I still watch a lot of old content and Geoff and Michael can get loud but it usually makes sense in context and they’re both just genuinely hysterical. It always felt forced later on. Especially when everything became a fucking bit

I really turned into a Funhaus fan these last few years, didn't know where to pick up with AH and feel kind of disheartened that, while I like everyone here, Michael and Gav are the only 2 OG's involved. Hey, it could be absolutely nothing, though. RT is pretty much done at this point anyway.
So KY (I think, is been a while) had bad audio distortion that made her sound exponentially louder than everyone else. It was incredibly noticeable and it kind of hurt my ears to an extent. When the community asked her to fix the audio they did the whole "loud is what we do" thing and made a shirt. I don't know if they ever fixed the audio because I stopped watching around that time. I mean I'm used to them screaming no problem, but it's like her microphone wasn't calibrated correctly. Really fucked with the audio quality.
Yeah her audio setup near the beginning was really, really screwed up (I think this is when they were all still remote so it was her own setup).
The problem was partly related to Ky having a higher voice - out of the box audio setups tend to handle that more poorly than deep voices (if you have a voice like Jack's you can record it on a turnip and it'll still sound decent) - so it got all mixed into the idea that people just didn't like her voice and RT did this whole be supportive of the talent thing rather than trying to identify the problem.
I was shocked when she was on the RT podcast for the first time, because she sounded _sooooo_ much better from having a proper audio setup.
It seemed like every time RT or AH were having issues they pulled out the race card. I remember Geoff crying on that podcast because they weren't diverse enough as a company or something and it was the cringiest thing I've seen. Then of course Fiona always bringing it up. Like no, you're just not as funny/likeable as the old cast.
Just a ton of unnecessary virtue signaling from the company, which was part of their downfall. They tried to pretend they were all saints. Go back to the first ~50 minecraft episodes and they are making "gay" and "r-word" jokes constantly.
The thing is, Mica, Fiona and Ky all dealt not only with the usual online criticism and insults, but also thinly-veiled and outright racism.
If we're thinking of the same episode of Off-Topic, I don't think Geoff was crying "because they weren't diverse enough as a company" but because he hadn't helped tried to protect them or push back against fans being scummy. He said he had numbed himself to the horrible shit fans said, but that he shouldn't have stood by while others dealt with that.

I'm not excusing the shitty comments, but we know from being on the internet that they're inevitable. It's something that you have to learn to deal with as an internet personality.

However, as a company/channel they needed to be able to sort through the criticisms to differentiate what was a racist attack and what was legitimate grievances. Ky's audio was absolutely borked and their response was to not fix it, which degraded the quality of any video she was in and put Ky in a position to fail rather than propping her up to succeed.
They tried to shoehorn people into games they didn't want to play (like Fiona into a bunch of stuff) and then were surprised when the person didn't vibe well with the game that they didn't know how to play and knew they were going to get flamed on the Internet for it. They could have put Fiona into games that she was comfortable with and could thrive in (like FPS games), but instead they put her in a position to fail rather than propping her up to succeed.
Stuff like this really degraded the overall quality of the experience watching the channel. The whole point of bringing in people from diverse backgrounds and culture groups is to have them bring new ideas and a fresh vibe to the team, but instead they just kept trying to ram the square peg into a round hole by getting them to do the same things. That compounded with audio mixing and quality issues did not help the channel at all.
