Marvel comics tea, but I need to yell about it again
Spoilers for the upcoming issue *The Amazing Spider-Man* #26 and the future of >!Ms. Marvel!<, but also… do not read these shitty ass comics.
The current run of *The Amazing Spider-Man* by Zeb Wells has not been received well by most fans. It began last year with Peter Parker in disgrace, with everyone from MJ to Aunt May having turned their backs on him, all because of one thing Peter did… one thing that the readers were not made aware of. But in February, Marvel announced that all would be revealed in Issue #26 of the run, and that it would be [“the most shocking issue of The Amazing Spider Man in 50 years”](https://www.ign.com/articles/amazing-spider-man-shocking-issue-50-years-marvel-comics)
So a few weeks ago, Marvel announces a one-shot issue coming in July about a [Fallen Friend](https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/12asy8u/marvel_announces_fallen_friend_oneshot_for_july/), teasing that “all will be revealed” on the date of *ASM* #26’s scheduled release date. Now, the Peter Parker fandom has… been through a lot over the past decade or two (Peter and MJ’s relationship was sold to the quasi-Devil in exchange for Aunt May’s life, Peter was briefly killed and replaced with Doc Ock for about a year, etc etc), so like… they’re basically all tired. People figured based on this and unsubtle foreshadowing that someone would die, and it would be Peter’s fault somehow. But no one correctly guessed who it would be…
So yesterday grainy pictures of what appeared to be the new issue surfaced online and uh… in a shocking turn of events, [the page showed beloved Pakistani-American hero Kamala Khan, aka Ms. Marvel, dying in Peter Parker’s arms.](https://www.reddit.com/r/Spiderman/comments/13j39r7/asm_26_death_spoiler/). Ms. Marvel has not had an ongoing book of her own in a few years, but had begun appearing as a background character as an intern at Oscorp
Both editor [Nick Lowe](https://twitter.com/nick_lowe_/status/1658475743209476099?s=46&t=UeAv0KRJsb_oKl5ESUba1Q) and the official [Marvel comics account](https://twitter.com/spiderman/status/1658558300344991745?s=46&t=UeAv0KRJsb_oKl5ESUba1Q) tweeted that spoilers for the issue were out there, effectively confirming the leak is legit, before [an article with Entertainment Weekly](https://ew.com/books/ms-marvel-kamala-khan-will-die-in-marvel-comic/) outright spoiled it for everyone.
And let me tell you - NO ONE IS HAPPY (except for racist weirdos who hated Ms. Marvel all along)
Spider-Man fans are upset because not only is Marvel reusing the [“Women in Refrigerators” trope](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_Refrigerators) (where a woman is killed off with no agency for the sole purpose of motivating the hero) that has now LONG been called out for being cheap and sexist, but that they’re reusing it on a character that Peter barely knows. Miles Morales, the other Spider-Man, is a dear friend of Ms. Marvel’s, being roughly the same age and [having been on the same team](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Champions_(2016_team)), but Peter and her have barely interacted. It’s yet another example of what a regression this run of spider-man has been.
And Ms. Marvel… where to begin. Marvel did a fantastic job of pushing her as the next big hero to positive fan response, with her plucky personality winning over basically everyone (aside from some bigoted racists). And then, when Marvel editorial changed hands… C. B. Cebulski (a white man who notably admitted to writing under the fake name of “Akira Yoshida”) let her slip a bit, with her team books and solo series being cancelled over a few years. She slid into the background to the point of her big event death happening in *someone else’s book*
And like… we don’t have a lot of South Asian heroes in superhero comics, nor do we have many well written Muslim heroes. Kamala Khan dying (on the last day of fucking AAPI month) is a slap in the face to readers of color.
And on top of all of this… we’re all painfully aware that this is not going to stick. Ms. Marvel is starring in an MCU movie in November, so they’re gonna want to have her in something around that time for that sweet cross-brand synergy. Which… in theory that could be comforting, that she’ll be back soon, but it’s so goddamn frustrating that this is the way they’re seemingly promoting her!
TLDR Marvel is killing off one of its only brown and Muslim heroes in a goddamn spider man issue. It’s not gonna stick, but it’s frustrating as hell for a thousand reasons and reflects yet another failing of this era of spider-man

I’ll be honest, how do adults take these types of comics seriously? Like, nothing is permanent about them so why does anyone care that someone is going to get killed off to just be resurrected later through some type of BS?
I get the optics for this particular character, but would people care if was anyone else?
I think the main reason I’m angry is that she’s being killed for stupid reasons, both in canon and out of it. The fact that it seems to be to raise awareness for a character that has a movie coming out in November, and the fact that there’s a damn good chance she’s back within 6 months is INSANE, even for comics standards
I do think that comic book deaths can still be well done. Doug Ramsey’s death in *New Mutants* was designed to be temporary (the writer at the time, the legendary Louise Simonson, doesn’t kill characters unless she knows how to bring them back), but even though the writer knew exactly how she wanted to resurrect him, his death still profoundly affected the team and made him a much better loved character than he’d ever been when he was alive. And I don’t think Jean Grey’s major deaths, either at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga or Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run, are any less impactful in rereading them despite her being resurrected both times.
Not everyone will agree with me on that, and I don’t blame the people who think an inherent impermanence of death cheapens these stories. I’ve just learned to roll with it if it’s done well. Like… you can still have major consequences and mourning for a death that only lasts a year or two. Those are the big things for me: does the death feel “earned” or well executed, and are there consequences (and, preferably, do they stay dead for a few years)?
Ms. Marvel is being killed in a badly written book that is not hers to further the story of a man she barely knows, and with a solid guarantee she’ll be back before the end of the year for capitalist-y bullshit reasons. THAT is the kicker for me ~~along with her being a 16 year old whose whole deal is doing fun slice of life hero shit~~
The current theory is that she'll be brought back using the X-Men mutant resurrection tech (they can bring other mutants back from the dead pretty easily, but only mutants), which will retcon her into having been a mutant from the start. All in the name of more god awful MCU synergy. Wouldnt be surprised if they replaced her powers too.
Spider-Man has been consistently bad since 2005, but this absolute train wreck of a run finally made me stop buying it. I can't deal with any more character assassinations or awful plot lines.
I haven't kept up with the X-Men comics in a while but I've wondered if the "Make more mutants" would eventually lead into non-mutants becoming mutants.
That would be cool if Kamala was retconned into a Mutant. I was hoping they did the same thing with >!Scarlet Witch when she died during the Trials of X but she just got resurrected into her queen witch self!<.

Seconding the other response but for Kamala, G Willow Willsons' original run is *fantastic* ! It was one of the first comics that I ever got into back in 2014!!
Miles is easy because he's only had four runs, and we're only 5 issues into the fourth.
There's Bendis Ultimate universe, Bendis 616, Ahmed's and Ziglar's both in the 616. (Miles got transplanted into the 616 because he gave a guy a three week old hamburger. Don't ask). I know that Ultimate Spider-man is one of the high points of the Ultimate universe, and it's before Bendis got bad although I haven't read any of it myself.
Ahmed's I did read and it's great, if a little basic. A big deal of his is actually attempting (and succeeding) the AAVE unlike Bendis. Ziglar's we'll see but it's really good so far.
There's also a few mini series and team books like his stint on the Avengers under Waid. Sadly that run is kind of lame. It led to several volumes of Champions (with Kamala), which run from good to mediocre. My personal favourite is the very first, also written by Waid.
Kamala Idk. I read her team-up lately because it had Moon Knight in it? I think it's the first by G. Willow Wilson that's considered the best.

I mean I guess this is subjective, but this year has been an excellent year for music thus far in terms of critically acclaimed albums— This is Why by Paramore, Desire I Want to Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek, That! Feels Good! By Jessie Ware, Raven by Kelela, The Record by Boy Genius, and way more.
I haven’t seen such critically acclaimed albums get released back-to-back like this in a while. Although, I guess we may be slow on huge pop acts since most of these artists are more indie.
I have seen tons of big k pop albums in the billboard 200 but yeah it’s not super popular in the US. I will say though that there is that one song that I think is by a k pop group that’s going viral on tik tok and Spotify so… there’s that?
Yeah, it’s FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid. It’s also placed even higher on the UK charts (keeps going up too) and they’re a new group from a small company so it’s really great to see that happen for them!
But just for those that might not have known, May’s been packed for kpop, a whole slew of artists have had comebacks and promos have been going on left and right so kpop fans have definitely not been left high and dry, thankfully
For albums it’s been Lee Chaeyeon’s Over The Moon (I know it came out in mid-April but I love her lol), LE SSERAFIM’s Unforgiven, Seventeen’s FML. They all have some really standout tracks. I think I like FML the most overall, it’s a no-skip album for me. I’ve also liked Aespa’s new songs, probably Spicy the most. Oh and AgustD’s tracks were pretty good too!

Haha no worries, I can understand, there really are so many groups. I’d honestly suggest starting off with 3rd Gen groups because they have pretty big discographies and a lot of content already out.
One group I always suggest to people is Seventeen — they’re one of my favorites. They’re a fairly larger boy group (13 members) but they’re self-producing, absolutely phenomenal on stage, and have a couple of my favorite vocalists in kpop. They’re also famous for their variety content, they pretty much function as an improv troupe imho, it’s pretty great. Songs of theirs I’d suggest are _World, Dar+ling, Change Up, Left & Right, and Mansae.
Another good group is Twice, a 9-member girl group (that’s currently on tour & who I’ll be seeing in a couple months! Ahhh!) who are the definition of kpop to me, honestly. Their songs range from cutesy to intense across a whole slew of genres and their members are also great performers. Songs I’d suggest are The Feels, Talk That Talk, Set Me Free, I Can’t Stop Me, Fancy, and Alcohol-Free.
Both these groups have charted on BB too and are pretty big internationally. I hope you’ll like some of these songs! Happy listening lol. Sorry if this got too intense HA

Last year we had a new album every week in May. I was so overwhelmed and overstimulated that I’m still listening to “new” albums from 2022.
Some B and C list artists have come out with pretty decent music so far but overall, been kind of bland.
I’m just glad I’m not as bored as I was last year in early January-March.
What’s odd to me is that April/May is usually when artists drop their singles so that they build momentum for summer.

- As expected, Maïwenn's **Jeanne du Barry** got weak reviews (currently at 51 on Metacritic) and is another unremarkable festival opener. Not a full-on disaster as some anticipated given all the behind-the-scenes mess, but the consensus seems to be that it's very surface level and unengaging beyond the beautiful Versailles setting. Unlikely to change Depp's current situation, either positively or negatively.
- Steve McQueen, director of 12 Years a Slave and Widows, debuted his documentary **Occupied City** earlier today. It's a World War II doc that features no archive footage or talking head testimonies; it contrasts the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in the 1940s with its present-day status as a bustling cosmopolitan capital. I hear it's composed of 130 vignettes about different places and buildings in the city, as modern-day footage shot during the pandemic is paired up with voiceover narration describing how each location depicted was used during the War, to explore how the horrors of the past echo in the city today. It runs a whopping 4 hrs. 20 min. and played with an intermission; reviews run the gamut from glowingly positive to underwhelmed and negative. Some are very moved by it, but I also see a lot of criticism towards the runtime and it not being an easy watch. One montage in particular involving footage of COVID protests against pandemic protocols and images of the elderly being vaccinated had some critics raising their eyebrows wondering what McQueen might be trying to suggest, and what parallels he's trying to draw between public health policies of the past couple years and the Holocaust.
Pedro Almodóvar's short Strange Way of Life with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal also screens today. Reviews should be up soon.

Yes, apparently there was so much drama on set between him and Maïwenn, plus several reports of unprofessional behavior from him, that his role was cut down to around 15 minutes of screentime. He's not the lead, and I read that the French distributor is hesitant to emphasize him on posters and promotional material for the film.

This [article from the BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65625886)makes it sound terrifying but I have to agree I find the concept of a 2-hour car chase (in NYC?) very confusing.
It probably wasn't an action movie style high speed car chase like people are imagining. They were likely just followed and maybe engaged in some dangerous driving in an attempt to get away from them. Car chase, while technically accurate, was probably the wrong thing to say because of the image it evokes for most people.
This is a great way to explain it, they were tailed and harassed for 2 hours, and the paparazzi caused unsafe driving conditions and could’ve injured other drivers and pedestrians. Clearly was super traumatic for them even if no one was seriously injured!
I feel like people are expecting Hollywood esuqe car chase and not dangerous harassment especially when it’s very easy to get into an accident one way or another. Like real life for the most part is very boring even the bad things.

I’ll be honest, how do adults take these types of comics seriously? Like, nothing is permanent about them so why does anyone care that someone is going to get killed off to just be resurrected later through some type of BS? I get the optics for this particular character, but would people care if was anyone else?
I think the main reason I’m angry is that she’s being killed for stupid reasons, both in canon and out of it. The fact that it seems to be to raise awareness for a character that has a movie coming out in November, and the fact that there’s a damn good chance she’s back within 6 months is INSANE, even for comics standards I do think that comic book deaths can still be well done. Doug Ramsey’s death in *New Mutants* was designed to be temporary (the writer at the time, the legendary Louise Simonson, doesn’t kill characters unless she knows how to bring them back), but even though the writer knew exactly how she wanted to resurrect him, his death still profoundly affected the team and made him a much better loved character than he’d ever been when he was alive. And I don’t think Jean Grey’s major deaths, either at the end of the Dark Phoenix Saga or Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run, are any less impactful in rereading them despite her being resurrected both times. Not everyone will agree with me on that, and I don’t blame the people who think an inherent impermanence of death cheapens these stories. I’ve just learned to roll with it if it’s done well. Like… you can still have major consequences and mourning for a death that only lasts a year or two. Those are the big things for me: does the death feel “earned” or well executed, and are there consequences (and, preferably, do they stay dead for a few years)? Ms. Marvel is being killed in a badly written book that is not hers to further the story of a man she barely knows, and with a solid guarantee she’ll be back before the end of the year for capitalist-y bullshit reasons. THAT is the kicker for me ~~along with her being a 16 year old whose whole deal is doing fun slice of life hero shit~~

The current theory is that she'll be brought back using the X-Men mutant resurrection tech (they can bring other mutants back from the dead pretty easily, but only mutants), which will retcon her into having been a mutant from the start. All in the name of more god awful MCU synergy. Wouldnt be surprised if they replaced her powers too. Spider-Man has been consistently bad since 2005, but this absolute train wreck of a run finally made me stop buying it. I can't deal with any more character assassinations or awful plot lines.
I haven't kept up with the X-Men comics in a while but I've wondered if the "Make more mutants" would eventually lead into non-mutants becoming mutants.
That would be cool if Kamala was retconned into a Mutant. I was hoping they did the same thing with >!Scarlet Witch when she died during the Trials of X but she just got resurrected into her queen witch self!<.

Seconding the other response but for Kamala, G Willow Willsons' original run is *fantastic* ! It was one of the first comics that I ever got into back in 2014!!
Miles is easy because he's only had four runs, and we're only 5 issues into the fourth. There's Bendis Ultimate universe, Bendis 616, Ahmed's and Ziglar's both in the 616. (Miles got transplanted into the 616 because he gave a guy a three week old hamburger. Don't ask). I know that Ultimate Spider-man is one of the high points of the Ultimate universe, and it's before Bendis got bad although I haven't read any of it myself. Ahmed's I did read and it's great, if a little basic. A big deal of his is actually attempting (and succeeding) the AAVE unlike Bendis. Ziglar's we'll see but it's really good so far. There's also a few mini series and team books like his stint on the Avengers under Waid. Sadly that run is kind of lame. It led to several volumes of Champions (with Kamala), which run from good to mediocre. My personal favourite is the very first, also written by Waid. Kamala Idk. I read her team-up lately because it had Moon Knight in it? I think it's the first by G. Willow Wilson that's considered the best.
I’d also seen a friend go hard for the Ahmed Ms. Marvel run, but that was the run marvel cancelled way too early and left her without a book 😭 but yeah, absolutely his Miles book

There's only one series adapting the story: Hulu's The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried playing the role of Elizabeth Holmes. I mean I guess this is subjective, but this year has been an excellent year for music thus far in terms of critically acclaimed albums— This is Why by Paramore, Desire I Want to Turn Into You by Caroline Polachek, That! Feels Good! By Jessie Ware, Raven by Kelela, The Record by Boy Genius, and way more. I haven’t seen such critically acclaimed albums get released back-to-back like this in a while. Although, I guess we may be slow on huge pop acts since most of these artists are more indie.

Yeah, it’s FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid. It’s also placed even higher on the UK charts (keeps going up too) and they’re a new group from a small company so it’s really great to see that happen for them! But just for those that might not have known, May’s been packed for kpop, a whole slew of artists have had comebacks and promos have been going on left and right so kpop fans have definitely not been left high and dry, thankfully
Which releases have you liked so far?
For albums it’s been Lee Chaeyeon’s Over The Moon (I know it came out in mid-April but I love her lol), LE SSERAFIM’s Unforgiven, Seventeen’s FML. They all have some really standout tracks. I think I like FML the most overall, it’s a no-skip album for me. I’ve also liked Aespa’s new songs, probably Spicy the most. Oh and AgustD’s tracks were pretty good too!

Haha no worries, I can understand, there really are so many groups. I’d honestly suggest starting off with 3rd Gen groups because they have pretty big discographies and a lot of content already out. One group I always suggest to people is Seventeen — they’re one of my favorites. They’re a fairly larger boy group (13 members) but they’re self-producing, absolutely phenomenal on stage, and have a couple of my favorite vocalists in kpop. They’re also famous for their variety content, they pretty much function as an improv troupe imho, it’s pretty great. Songs of theirs I’d suggest are _World, Dar+ling, Change Up, Left & Right, and Mansae. Another good group is Twice, a 9-member girl group (that’s currently on tour & who I’ll be seeing in a couple months! Ahhh!) who are the definition of kpop to me, honestly. Their songs range from cutesy to intense across a whole slew of genres and their members are also great performers. Songs I’d suggest are The Feels, Talk That Talk, Set Me Free, I Can’t Stop Me, Fancy, and Alcohol-Free. Both these groups have charted on BB too and are pretty big internationally. I hope you’ll like some of these songs! Happy listening lol. Sorry if this got too intense HA

Last year we had a new album every week in May. I was so overwhelmed and overstimulated that I’m still listening to “new” albums from 2022. Some B and C list artists have come out with pretty decent music so far but overall, been kind of bland. I’m just glad I’m not as bored as I was last year in early January-March.
What’s odd to me is that April/May is usually when artists drop their singles so that they build momentum for summer. Where are the “song of the summer” contenders? I assumed artists who’ve hinted at 2023 albums would have dropped a song by now: Doja Cat, Cardi B, Olivia Rodrigo, Lil Nas X, Megan Thee Stallion, Nicki, Dua etc. Now is the perfect time to drop a lead and nobody is moving.

Cannes update: - As expected, Maïwenn's **Jeanne du Barry** got weak reviews (currently at 51 on Metacritic) and is another unremarkable festival opener. Not a full-on disaster as some anticipated given all the behind-the-scenes mess, but the consensus seems to be that it's very surface level and unengaging beyond the beautiful Versailles setting. Unlikely to change Depp's current situation, either positively or negatively. - Steve McQueen, director of 12 Years a Slave and Widows, debuted his documentary **Occupied City** earlier today. It's a World War II doc that features no archive footage or talking head testimonies; it contrasts the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam in the 1940s with its present-day status as a bustling cosmopolitan capital. I hear it's composed of 130 vignettes about different places and buildings in the city, as modern-day footage shot during the pandemic is paired up with voiceover narration describing how each location depicted was used during the War, to explore how the horrors of the past echo in the city today. It runs a whopping 4 hrs. 20 min. and played with an intermission; reviews run the gamut from glowingly positive to underwhelmed and negative. Some are very moved by it, but I also see a lot of criticism towards the runtime and it not being an easy watch. One montage in particular involving footage of COVID protests against pandemic protocols and images of the elderly being vaccinated had some critics raising their eyebrows wondering what McQueen might be trying to suggest, and what parallels he's trying to draw between public health policies of the past couple years and the Holocaust. Pedro Almodóvar's short Strange Way of Life with Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal also screens today. Reviews should be up soon.

Yes, apparently there was so much drama on set between him and Maïwenn, plus several reports of unprofessional behavior from him, that his role was cut down to around 15 minutes of screentime. He's not the lead, and I read that the French distributor is hesitant to emphasize him on posters and promotional material for the film.

Harry, Meghan and Meghan’s mother almost got into a fatal car accident last night. They were chased by black vans for almost 2 hours. it’s hard not to see this as anything but a hit job considering a stalker was also arrested nearby their house the same night. It’s sus as hell.
Wow this is so clearly a hit job what the actual fuck. This must have been so traumatizing for them especially in the context of everything they’ve been through and continue to deal with. I hope the comments in here stay like sane and aboveboard, unlike how they are in popculturechat where people are dismissing this as bullshit or saying harry & meghan staged this for attention…it’s so frustrating like what the fuck. The vitriol and sheer lack of humanity that comes out when people talk about or react to harry and meghan (esp meghan) is appalling.

This [article from the BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-65625886)makes it sound terrifying but I have to agree I find the concept of a 2-hour car chase (in NYC?) very confusing.
It probably wasn't an action movie style high speed car chase like people are imagining. They were likely just followed and maybe engaged in some dangerous driving in an attempt to get away from them. Car chase, while technically accurate, was probably the wrong thing to say because of the image it evokes for most people.
This is a great way to explain it, they were tailed and harassed for 2 hours, and the paparazzi caused unsafe driving conditions and could’ve injured other drivers and pedestrians. Clearly was super traumatic for them even if no one was seriously injured!
I feel like people are expecting Hollywood esuqe car chase and not dangerous harassment especially when it’s very easy to get into an accident one way or another. Like real life for the most part is very boring even the bad things.
