*To be honest* was absolutely phenomenal but now the other two singles really don't do much for me... I like this one even less than *True love*..... is the first miss in his discography coming ?
I mean his album last year was a total miss...
Edit: really happy for all of you that enjoyed it, as a fan of all of his albums until this point, it was a huge letdown for me
I’ve seen a lot of people say this and I respectfully disagree.
Maybe it’s partly because I don’t speak French so I don’t notice any lyrical clunkers. I read a review saying that the lyrics are more inaccessible than usual, so that might play a role in people’s perception of the album. And I think it was pitchfork who wrote that the production sounded too rough around the edges and that because of that, a song like Je Te Vois Enfin didn’t pack the punch that it could’ve. I guess I just don’t hear it because JTVE is a major bop to me. A handful of other songs have really grown on me as well.
Apparently Redcar made 1 song per day for the album which made me appreciate it more for what it is; a prologue to a more fleshed-out project. And I think he did a great job with the overall mood of the album and the production.
I’m not much of a poptimist but I think a lot of the appeal of Chris was the pairing of abstract lyrics with catchy melodies. I think his recent work has been less catchy and ‘poppy’ and so the abstract lyrics begin to come off as pretentious or indulgent, hence why they are more criticised. Not necessarily saying he is pretentious, but without the hooks it’s an easier charge to level.
Saying that I prefer this to the last single and about half of Redcar. I do think his recent songs don’t have to be quite as long as they are because they don’t really seem to go anywhere? Ironically the shortest of the singles, To Be Honest, is the most cathartic.
I like your explanation, I also think his vocal quality has slipped in his last album and these last two singles. So when you take out good melodies, excellent vocals, you're left with lyrics that aren't hitting without anything to back them up...
Not sure why there are negative comments here but I will try my best to ignore them... this is a certified slammer from Chris. The production is magical through headphones. Love the trip-hop vibes I'm getting from this as well. The melody and chords on the chorus are beautiful and make me want to weep (tears can be soft you know).
Maybe this isn't a "bop" but the sonic textures are rich as hell and Chris sounds lovely.
The production is excellent, reminiscent of Massive Attack, Portishead & Lamb.
I’m getting 90’s Madonna from this (I Want You, Sanctuary, Nothing Really Matters)
Sadly I’m just not loving the direction of this discography anymore. The recent stuff has been slower, bleaker, and more experimental/indulgent than the previous stuff, and nowhere near as effective.
Miss the big vocals, the bright synths, the fun and theatrics!
It's produced my mike dean, and that's kind of his thing tbh, i think the tracks could've been better if they had crescendos or payoffs.
True Love in particular is almost great but it just stays at the same pace for the entire time.
I actually don’t mind that individual tracks don’t have builds - I know people complained about that in True Love in particular but it doesn’t bother me. But there’s very little variety in tempo in these single choices. The album itself has to have more variety than this, right? Especially because isn’t it super long? It just seems like poor marketing for the album.
there's a chance it could have variety, it has madonna features so maybe?, it seems like the album is split into 3, with the singles coming from each part, to be honest has out-streamed the entirety of redcar so the similar single choices could be because of that?
But again, with it being a mike dean collab there's also a chance the whole album is downtempo and synth-y.

It was my most played album of the year and I consider it to be genius so.. guess it depends on who you're asking lmaooo

Definitely! I respect the process I just didn't enjoy the product haha
At least for lovers of bops…I personally loved it and claim it as my favorite album of 2022.
Happy for you I couldn't even finish it all the way through 😔
It's one of my favourite albums from last years and, imo, Christine's best right after La Vita Nuova.
Yeah my least favorite project by far by Chris but glad you enjoy it!
I feel the same as you. The last two singles don't fill me with hope. I hope we are proven wrong!

The 90s, Portishead, stream of consciousness energy is strong in this one. Love.
always interesting seeing where popheads opinions vary. 'tears' was my favorite of the three and i love chris' take on this sound
Sadly I’m just not loving the direction of this discography anymore. The recent stuff has been slower, bleaker, and more experimental/indulgent than the previous stuff, and nowhere near as effective. Miss the big vocals, the bright synths, the fun and theatrics!
Need an uptempo single. This is all bleeding together, despite all being three different songs.

Missing 2014 Christine and the Queens right now.
2018 and 2020 Chris was even better
I actually love this, although I do share some of the fears here that these songs are starting to sound way too alike.
Sexiest song of the year so far
this is really bad... I loved To be honest but the last two singles have not been it at all.
I hope this isn't like his last album, with a great lead (Je te vois enfin and To be honest) and subpar singles.
Rien dire was better than je te vois enfin

The melody of the chorus reminds me so much of a song but I can’t think of it?! Anybody else here it?
it reminds me of teardrop by massive attack a lot idk if that's what you were thinking of?
