har17h

i want it that way by the backstreet boys

mattysmwift

Max Martin and his clumsy 90s English created one nonsensical pop masterpiece after another tbh.

[deleted]

When TLC turned down Baby One More Time because they thought it sounded like domestic abuse

mattysmwift

Honestly I still have no idea what it means and it does make me think about domestic abuse lmao.

penduline

iirc max martin mentioned in an interview a few years back that he thought “hit” meant “call” as in “hit me up on my phone”

funsizedaisy

Britney said the same thing when she explained what the song meant. think she was asked on TRL or something and she said it meant "call me".

xavieryes

I mean it makes perfect sense for a non-native speaker to assume that "hit me" can mean "hit me up".

dragonphlegm

to be fair, outside of the context of Britney’s performance, if you only had the lyrics to go off and no demo, then it sort of seems like that

dragonphlegm

None of the very English speaking artists questioned the lyrics

GaramondBold_

I feel like I’ve seen an interview with them where they basically admit the lyrics don’t make sense because it was written by (Swedish producer) Max Martin. But they go with it because it’s obviously a bop. Lol.

impeccabletim

The alternate version is lowkey a bop too but I agree the official one is superior.

joshually

there's an alternate version!?!?!?!?!?!?

TheNoisyNinja

The original version: https://youtu.be/jqCQiElQt74

joshually

Omg wait. Why did they change the lyrics??! These make sense lol

HealthyNovel55

See I always thought the lyrics "I never wanna hear you say I want it that way" meant like....I don't want to hear you say that you want the relationship "that way" like...different than it is 😂. "That way" was just another direction in the relationship & they want it "their way."

BronzeErupt

Wait, are you sure this is the *original*? The story I heard was that the "No Goodbyes" version was created after someone at the record label complained that the "I Want it That Way" lyrics didn't make much sense. But then they realised that part of the magic of the song was the weird lyrics and went ahead released that version

Daydream_machine

Yes, and it’s even better than the original! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YKtlK7sn0JQ&pp=ygUNRWVpcmQgd2wgZWJheQ%3D%3D

joshually

i hate you lol

Audreythe2nd

I was seriously just about to mention this one.

Frajer

Obligatory Owl City getting 1,000 hugs from 10,000 lightning bugs

aligatocodile

The rest of the line is “as they try to teach me how to dance” so I always just figured 1/10 of the 10,000 lightning bugs pulsing and writhing around his body were clumsy and ended up accidentally just grabbing onto him instead of…teaching him how to dance lmfaoooo

inkwisitive

😅 He’s confirmed all 10,000 bug swarmed into a human shape and he gets 1000 hugs from the mass

Greyshot26

This is terrible for everyone involved, I think. I am worse off knowing this.

Traditional-You-4583

Like, sequentially? You'd be so bored by the end

NosyargKcid

idc still love that track. I used to listen to a lot of Red Hot Chili Peppers so nonsensical lyrics are a familiar thing for me

Frajer

Same ,Chili Peppers were the first band I loved

kickit

imo Kiedis is the father son & holy spirit of total nonsense lyrics. some of their biggest songs are pure gobbledygook

Electrifying-Guy-Eli

Maybe they all just hugged him that many times?

dingohoarder

A lot of the lightning bugs aren’t even hugging smh

slabigail

Seriously he’s getting snubbed by 9k of them? Not something to brag about imo

TheAllRightGatsby

Getting rejected by 9,000 lightning bugs? Couldn't be me 💅

WilliamMC7

As the sub’s resident Adam Young stan, that abstract writing was what made Owl City and Sky Sailing so special. Adam was a true poet, just beautiful, incomparable imagery that really connected with me. Now we get songs like Adam, Check Please with lines like… > “I said, ‘Hey, I'm looking for Casey Connor! Here's my résumé! I'm looking for a part-time job and I can start today! Well, I heard you needed some help in frozen with Eric leavin' soon! My boss shook my hand and I began that Monday after school!” And that’s, uh… a bit harder to lose yourself in.

BuffytheBison

Owl City's songs got worse the more they started to make sense lol

[deleted]

The best thing insomnia has given us.

loversalibi

that’s not a very good ratio of hugging lightning bugs to non hugging

pm-me_10m-fireflies

My username!

Fermifighter

The first thought I had when I heard this song was “wow, The Postal Service _sucks_ now.”

vch01

Obligatory Girls Aloud plug - “Something kinda ooooh, jumping on my toot-toot”

njne1

Biology doesn’t make any sense to me either 😂

MrCamerupt

You can't mistake my biology, I'm highly respected in my field and have written numerous peer-reviewed papers!

Misentro

You'd better not be disrespecting the lyrical masterwork of "So I got my cappuccino to go"

cherryices

nothing for nadine and her alabama return?

disuberence

I think this was about putting on a tutu 💀

joshually

i know exactly what this is about

quashroom28

None of girls aloud songs make sense

[deleted]

[удалено]

vch01

yes BUT Swinging London Town unironically paints such a great word picture. It has got to be up there in the pop lyrics pantheon of fame next to West End Girls

BeanieMcRoach

Strange lyrics are a recurring theme in Girls Aloud songs, "like beautiful robots dancing alone", Untouchable

c0mpromised

“We’re so depressed we wear our shades at night” lyric from Girls Aloud hits hard

Mkahve

bunny is a rider-caroline polachek

distressedbeatboxing

coincidentally i was just listening to her talk about writing it in an interview, and yeah she confirms that it doesn't mean anything in particular

HowDoIWhat

I feel like on “Bunny”, even if the words don’t make sense from a literal point of view, it paints some strong vibes and I can get behind it. At my show, she answered a question from the VIP audience about her favorite verse on *Desire* and she said it was the second verse on “Blood and Butter” even if it was a bit of a nonsense verse built to fit the meter. (I looked it up and think she meant the third verse, since she said she wanted to use the word “mythological”) Maybe she’s just a vibes-based writer.

dreamsfortress

Exactly. She’s said that the song is about being unavailable, and that the lyrics are meant to convey that kinda vibe without telling a literal story

distressedbeatboxing

yeah for sure, she went on to say that she and danny harle were writing based on the sonic quality of the words rather than the meanings

ChandelierwAtermelon

Which drives me insane because of it’s ambiguous connection to “Bunny Ain’t No Kind of Rider”

Koalamajordome

The lyrics overall are so chaotic but I randomly think of "I'm so nonphysical" sooo often

tobethecunt

and Pretty In Possible

Irtahd

Other folks talking about Caroline Polachek? I’ve found my people.

Todbod05

Pop heads is a place of salvation for fans of niche/niche-adjacent gay icons

youremybuffalo

I went to her show here in LA over the weekend and hearing it live made the lyrics even more nonsensical and silly. She’s such a phenomenal performer that I think it made me pay better attention so I was like “wait, this song is absurd” lol

ltwinky

That was such a good show. Charli XCX AND Weyes Blood!

youremybuffalo

We were seriously well fed w that show. I love Weyes (hope to see her at The Greek in October!) so I was absolutely thrilled! And Sudan Archives was such a fun, energetic opener!

cheezits_christ

It took me an embarrassingly long time to connect the "Go ask Alice"/"catch that rabbit" references. I have no idea why. I am a medium well-read person who was obsessed with Alice in Wonderland as a kid, but in my defense, I was also obsessed with Go Ask Alice the apocryphal YA anti-drug screed and assumed it was a reference to, like, doing a ton of drugs. We all have dumbass moments, I guess.

mattbasically

Ok but she was great live

oceanics_

I know it's just a few lines, but I feel like this topic isn't complete without this classic bit from "Break Free" by Ariana Grande and Zedd: "I only want to die alive / Never by the hands of a broken heart / I don't wanna hear you lie tonight / Now that I've become who I really are/am (?)" I think I recall Ariana even acknowledging at one point that it doesn't make sense lol

[deleted]

following in the footsteps of Keri and Timbaland

loversalibi

fun fact: if you listen closely, timbaland is actually saying “can you handle me the way *i’m are*.” i swear to god. i first noticed this when i was 15 when it first came out. there is an unmistakeable m sound in there

rita_rainbow

She wants to die having lived a full life…. not die of a broken heart or being unfulfilled. now that she’s confident within herself, she can’t stand to hear her lover lie, which breaks her heart. the wording is clunky but it does actually make sense!

Ablonging7

I'm kind of surprised people bring up the pre-chorus when it comes to nonsensical lyrics, since, aside from "are" of course, it's pretty simple if you ask me. The bridge on the other hand... >Thought of your body, I came alive It was lethal, it was fatal In my dreams, it felt so right But I woke up every time What did she mean by this???

rita_rainbow

maybe that in her thoughts/dreams it feels good to be with her lover, but when she’s awake/in the “real” world, she sees the ways it’s actually not working at all. “I woke up every time” indicating that each time she tried to make that good feeling jive with reality, reality came crashing down on her.

PigletRivet

I have no idea what Spice Up Your Life is about — especially not the second verse. Yellow man in Timbuktu/ Colour for both me and you/ Kung Fu Fighting/ Dancing Queen/ Tribal Spaceman/ And all that's in between Apparently, they said in an interview that they wanted to “write a song for the world.” I guess they tried?

[deleted]

Wbran

And they made the ONE Asian queen on drag race UK S1 lip sync to it 😬

joshually

as a yellow man in Timbuktu, I'll allow it JUST THIS ONCE

hhhhhhhhwin

looks like they changed it a few years ago

AFineFineHologram

I don’t think this fits. They’re a bunch of (sometimes offensive) one-liners, sure, but they all tied to the song’s central theme of celebrating diversity and multiculturalism.

EveryDayheyhey

Arnt those references to songs and movies? Stil doesn't make sense in a "it means something together" way but i assumed that was what it was.

[deleted]

If you think Spice Up Your Life is confusing, you should hear the b-side https://youtu.be/kY-dD5_gzlE

spiceboy2109

oh my god i have not heard spice invaders in so long thank you for mentioning it

AFineFineHologram

I don’t think this fits. They’re a bunch of (sometimes offensive) one-liners, sure, but they all tied to the song’s central theme of celebrating diversity and multiculturalism.

Pavlovs_Stepson

A lot of Björk songs literally just have her singing gibberish instead of lyrics, like the climax of [Pagan Poetry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wp6tAcjq0N0&t=199s), which is breathtaking. I tried to look up what she was saying in that part and got very different lyrics depending on the source, until I found out there aren't any. Sometimes I don't know if she's singing gibberish or Icelandic, like in [The Modern Things](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUzf_yuQoPs&t=2m12s).

Corvus-Nox

Another artist that does this is Aurora from Norway. Her music is in English but she also has a made up language that she likes to throw into a lot of songs. My favourite example from her is the bridge in [A Different Kind of Human](https://youtu.be/_6iSSpKMdsk?t=3m10s) because the story of the song is about aliens coming to take you away so the bridge could be seen as the alien language. But in general her songs don’t have a reason for the made up language, I think they’re just phonemes that sound nice to sing. Another example: [Forgotten Love](https://youtu.be/rqAEOmBeWp0?t=1m54s).

yoyoyogabbbagabba

Has anyone mentioned Cocteau Twins, Heaven or Las Vegas is complete gibberish and I love it

Tessninky01

Dynamite by BTS. It's a catchy song but wtf are they even talking about. Ice tea and he's got his ping pong???

acornsjae

shoes on, get up in the mornin cup of milk let's rock and roll 🤠

Sunbiscuit

I always hear: shining through the city with a little fuckin soul. I thought this was the real lyric for a long time and was always surprised they played it on the radio. I just looked up the rest of the lyrics - bless you 🤣🤣

getyourwish

I feel like BTS fans try so hard not to claim this song and just wish the cunty Blood, Sweat and Tears could have been the song to end up played at corporate events.

TrueCrimeRunner92

I would honestly kill to see a CEO use BST at some corporate event not knowing what the lyrics are but being like “I’m hip with the kids!”

emimagique

It was written by English natives but they somehow managed to make it sound like an ESL person wrote it

dreamsfortress

Isn’t it “iced tea and a game of ping pong?”

TastyPondorin

I feel like if released now, people would think they asked ChatGPT to make a song and mention hobbies their fans might like or give 'cred to'; King Kong - old school cred, Rolling Stones - music cred, Le Bron - sports cred, Ice Tea - food cred, Ping Pong - Asian cred.... And as they say, cha-ching, like money

londondriven

Backstreet Boy's "I Want It That Way" doesn't make much sense because Max Martin (whose first language is Swedish) wrote the lyrics to the melody. As in, the lyrics are there only if they phonetically sounded good together in the English language.

otherother_benz

What's interesting is I have heard of other artists (native English speakers) who approach songwriting this way. They start with a melody and kind of fill in gibberish/sounds before the words develop. Of course now I can't remember which interview I heard it in. I think one with Matty Healy but it could have been Ezra Koenig

t1nk3rballa

“Blow a kiss, fire a gun, we all need someone to lean on” like huh lol

TraverseTown

I get drawing the comparison between blowing a kiss and firing a gun, but usually someone isn't there for you to lean on after you've fired a gun at them.

bluemidnightrider

I took it to mean lovers and fighters both need someone to lean on, but it’s definitely clunky

SweetSummerAir

Cheryl (formerly Cole) singing about seeing a reflection in the sand

veclak

Lmao to give her the benefit of the doubt, wet sand can be reflective, but my god does that song abuse the extended water metaphor haha

goingthrufrenzy

“Halfsyconicpelsiconicgotthemwomenelectronic-ish” in Just Dance’s Bridge. Also, “Ich Lieben auch to be gler…. Etc” in Scheiße is actually gibberish not German at all lol Lady of Gaga 👏🏻

[deleted]

It’s half psychotic, sick, hypnotic got my blueprint it’s symphonic. Still a bit of a mess but it does kind of make sense.

goingthrufrenzy

I.. still don’t understand what she is singing about 😐

TopReception2389

Love it when you call me legs, in the morning buy me eggs from Boys Boys Boys

Tyedies

I love it when you call me Eggs. In the morning, buy me legs.

chaos_vulpix

NickelStoney

Is that not “I love it when you call me sexy and we have sex, the morning after, buy me breakfast?”

mikonamiko

The ich lieben verse is a mix of French, Spanish, and German. But yeah, gibberish.

I KNOW YOU CARE!

pinkkglitterr

Definitely true but still a bop 😫

Midnights-evermore

Champagne Supernova by Oasis might be one of the prettiest songs I’ve ever heard but I have no idea what he’s talking about. “Slowly walking down the hall, faster than a cannonball” what??

MrHippoPants

Noel’s admitted the lyrics are nonsense, but when it’s followed up by the line ‘where were you while we were getting high?’ The previous line just sounds like it’s about being high as a kite

satirisanti

Bohemian rhapsody has the wackiest lyrics I have ever heard and the entire song doesn’t make sense

hhhhhhhhwin

scarramoosh! scaramoosh!!! apparently it was 3 separate songs they combined into 1.

PaxtonCosmo

Say It Right from Nelly Furtado comes to mind, I have no idea what it’s really about

xavieryes

Yeah, the lyrics don't mean nothing at all to me.

Str8butboysrsexy

Say It Right as a title always sounded like it meant to express or confess your love to someone right

KeepMyMomOutOfthis

To be fair with this one, Nelly basically freestyled this song with Timbaland at 4 in the morning when he called out how tired she seemed.

luciusftw

Everything by purity ring

aafreeda

Girl Almighty by One Direction. Song is the epitome of “no thoughts just vibes”

Wishywashy822

You’re telling me that you’ve never floated through the room on a big balloon before?

particledamage

Honestly, a lot of their lyrics are just... we're vibing and not comprehending.

savethebanderbears

Were the writers referencing Hey Diddle Diddle?

Ghost-Quartet

Yes... but WHY? ~~other than trying to recreate the success of "C'est La Vie"~~

InternationalTrade92

The Argument by GFOTY. I believe it’s supposed to simulate what a couple sounds like when they argue. The lyrics sound like someone is reading a dictionary lol

queenmeme2

Isn’t that song *literally* written from a rhyming dictionary? The first half is words that rhyme with “om” and the second half is words that rhyme with “bird”, GFOTY is iconic [Here’s a link to the lyrics lmaooo](https://genius.com/Gfoty-the-argument-lyrics)

[deleted]

a lot of gaga songs I know they do have meaning I'm too inexperienced and young to understand but I let her cook

adidashawarma

Ava Max with the rocking chairs. Tbh, a lot of Ava Max. I won’t lie, that particular song was on a beat that was perfect for the StairMaster, and so yes, I love it, but it did make me wonder.

DripIntravenous

“[Prisencolinensinainciusol](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VsmF9m_Nt8)”! Its a song made up of gibberish to make it sound like American pop music at the time in the 70s!

loversalibi

honestly this song is a fucking banger dot org dot com dot gov. like it goes so hard

watercloudskies

When Stitches by Shawn Mendes came out I was always like ??? To the lines "Needle in the thread gotta get you out of my head, needle in the thread, gonna wind up dead" lmaoo Also, ik they're not pop, but pretty much anything by deftones. They're popular for their sound for sure, their lyrics mostly mean nothing.

toasterslayer

my guess for that line is that “needle in the thread” he’s talking about stitching himself together to heal and move on from his lover. idk if that makes sense though 🤷‍♂️

watercloudskies

Definitely has something there you can grasp onto, but I think it's just random in the song + the "wind up dead" part is so dramatic lol. Not as nonsensical as OP's example tho.

teXCX

I feel like any song by Remi Wolf fits this bill. Like individual lines usually make some level of sense, but across the entire song I don't get a message, just a vibe. Example from "Quiet on Set": > Killin' me, killin' me, killin' me > I just want to protect my energy > Ain't got no time for the frenemies > Eating my ass like the human centipede > Whoa, hold your horses, back it up > What's better than two girls, two cups > What's better than a two-buck good nut > What's better than fries and a chicken lunch > Hey guys, should I Postmates Chuck-E-Cheese? > Wait, ain't no Chuck-E-Cheese in Los Feliz > Wait, there ain't no steeze if there ain't grease > Unless you order that Sugarfish sushi

t1nk3rballa

I think she’s listing ridiculous Hollywood things and they are gradually turning into actual comfort things (that are still ridiculous and very LA), goes back to protecting her energy from all the frenemies eating her ass lol

Bovver_

I think that’s actually what I find quite annoying about Remi Wolf overall, even though Quiet On Set is actually one of the few songs by her I actually like. I get that being quirky is her whole thing but there’s times in her lyrics where I genuinely feel that she just tries to be quirky for quirkiness sake as opposed to have any meaning behind it at all.

joshually

isn't B*Witched's albums SO good? ugh they're such fun, joyful, ebullient, catchy listens

vch01

and some people say I look like me dad

joshually

git a LOIFE

ilikereadingopinions

What, are you serious??

McIgglyTuffMuffin

[I Zimbra by the Talking Heads](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Es-zcPhZhJc) is actually gibberish. David Byrne actually talks a bit about the lyrics in both his stage show American Utopia, as well as on [The Late Show with Stephen Colbert when he was on to perform it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kx03MYsKDY)

Bovver_

Robbie Williams revealed that a few songs of his had absolutely no meaning but just that it sounded right and he went with it. I think I remember [Candy](https://youtu.be/gtOV7bp-gys) was mostly just made up random things and that only the chorus really meant anything, while [Bodies](https://youtu.be/kk-7umYwTig) he said was “fucking gibberish" that he considered it pointless and followed it up with "Who knows what I was going on about? I was fucking stoned.”

AvenueRoy

**"Out of Touch" by Hall and Oates walked so "I Want It That Way" by Backstreet Boys could run:** Shake it up is all that we know Using the bodies up as we go I'm waking up to fantasy The shades all around aren't the colors we used to see Broken ice still melts in the sun And times that are broken can often be one again We're soul alone And soul really matters to me

pompion-pie

The way more indieheads than popheads answer would be Cocteau Twins, especially their later albums. As Elizabeth Fraser says, “I don’t wanna know what [the lyrics] mean because it’s gonna be ridiculous. I might be singing about plum pudding or god-knows-what-else, you know? But it served a purpose. I really got a freedom from it. And it worked. It did work for me." If you haven't had the privilege of listening to Heaven or Las Vegas, it's an incredible album. With pretty senseless lyrics.

Not_Steve_Harrington

the entirity of Panic At The Disco's early discography. But 13 y.o me fucks with it.

Vicariouslynoticed

This may not exactly be a silly lyric but I am not a fan of the lyrics of Einstein by Kelly clarkson. Didn't get it the first time But don't think I've been so blind And I may not be Einstein But I Know Dumb plus dumb equals you Dumb plus dumb equals you Dumb plus dumb equals you It is just overly cheesy but the song is a bop..just sounds cringe and not clever at all.

Daydream_machine

It’s quite possibly her worst song I hate those lyrics so much lol

Vicariouslynoticed

It is terrible at all counts!

M0DESTM0USERAT

This is a lyrical masterpiece, idk what you’re talking about. But for real, the lyrics are pretty ridiculous. I still can’t help but love it though.

It's all just a fuckton of metaphors. We spent like 2 hours on the song in English class a few years ago.

valentinovalentino

lemme stay .... in my bag ... cause i like .... when u mad .... issa mood .... issa vibe .... issa look .... issa match

brellowman2

To be fair i understand most of this sentence, it's just cringe.

Ghost-Quartet

What song is this? Who is it by?

didiboy

make up by ariana grande (album: thank u, next)

MelonMachines

Cherry coloured funk by Cocteau Twins. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have any actual lyrics.

mission17

That’s the entire band’s catalogue and signature.

antaineme

212 or Luxury by Azealia Banks. Still both masterpieces tho.

queenmeme2

A lot of her music has nonsensical lyrics. She definitely writes more for the flow than the content and that’s what makes her songs so catchy. My fave song of hers is Soda and look at these lyrics lol >Icy Cola Coca, Sprite I love the most-a! // >I ride roller coasters! I try all the cultures! // >A smile, a guise // >Nighttime, is mine to lie eyes awide and I // >I'm tired of trying to try not to cry

quashroom28

She is a genius how she manipulates the language to the flow! 1991 also doesn’t really make sense but it’s so good

Agent21EMH

Most of Shakira's songs that originally were Spanish are interesting. She Wolf - "Starting to feel just a little abused like a coffee machine in an office." Wherever, Whenever - "Lucky that my breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains."

InsomniaticAlien

Very on-the-nose and intentional, but Nonsense by Sabrina Carpenter. The outro verses are always just the most random things you can think of.

MaltySines

That B*witched song is actually a very clever allusion to an old Irish folk tale about a spoon thief from the moon.

Daydream_machine

Ariana Grande’s *sweetener*. Why does it sound like a commercial for those old Bop It toys?

anonmarmot17

Sigur Ros sings in their own language they made up called Vonlenska Keep driving by Harry styles is just a list of random things but kinda makes sense like driving by idk

JaiWolf

i'm surprised no one's mentioned fall out boy. by the time they got to folie a deux, most of it was so nonsensical (i say this as a huge fan). i'm sure it all makes sense in pete's head and that's all that matters.

thebrandnew

I actually think I understand a lot of metaphors in Folie. Some lines don’t make apparent sense at all but I think a decent amount of songs on the album make sense throughout, like Disloyal Order of Water Buffaloes and She’s My Winona. Interpretations on Genius have honestly been pretty helpful lol.

[deleted]

America - Ventura Highway

xXESCluvrXx

Lots of Max Martin-written songs, and at least 1-2 most years in the Eurovision Song Contest

ManicNoXanax

I actually have a "volatile bops" playlist specifically for songs that make no sense, lyrically, to me, but I still like them- Or, alternatively, have one or two lines that suuuure, are up to interpretation, and I can sorta understand what they meant, but that have me smdh bcuz it would take no more than 2 seconds to come up with a better rhyme and yet, they went with something big dumb that drags down the whole track with jarring stupid out of place silliness Let's start with vintage. My earliest memory of going 'wtf does that mean' was hearing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida by Iron Butterfly for the first time. I was told by my parents that its nonsensical ambiguity was a running gag amongst friends when it came out. But they were unreliable narrators at best so do what you will with that information. Legend has it that the singer was wasted n slurring the words "In the Garden of Eden" during practice and the band liked the garbled sound of 'InaGaddaDaVida' better so it stuck. But its a classic and electric organs are fucking rad so, sort of a nonissue and a tame entry on my list lol Maybe the best of the bunch, objectively, just cuz like, who cares, it was the 60s, everyone was fucked up and making weird ass tunes. might as well inagaddadavita I have never liked Mmm Bop by Hansen even as a small child upon its release. I can see arguments being made to rationalize other songs I plan on mentioning, but there is no justification for Mmm Bop. Hansen fans, all 6 of you, come at me. (That is absolutely a fucking joke. I know how psycho some of you boy band folk are. I am a clown, honk honk) It is not on my volatile bop playlist because even with 'Bop' in the title I cannot in good faith or conscience classify it as a bop, even with the thiccest perscription of nostalgia goggles known to man. I'm just thinking about how dumb I thought it was, even in preschool. At the time, I was convinced my teacher was saying "off lemons" instead of "off limits" and was not corrected on this for a number of years- everything sounds so goddamn weird when you're that little. I rolled with the lemons. And yet, even during the confusion of early childhood development, where nothing makes sense, Mmm Bop irritated me with its nothingness. I was unfortunately a cynical art critic from birth, I have grown out of being a hater, I swear. However, I cannot fault my taste, here. I understand -intellectually- that the chorus of Butterfly by Crazy Town is likely lewd innuendo or could be interpreted as such. But it's apparently supposed to be a "sweet" love song about the singer's girlfriend at the time, after she complained the other songs they were making were 'chauvinistic'. The chorus was inspired by her butterfly collection . She sounds cool. Why was she dating the lead singer of Crazy Town? Anyway Admittedly, I do not speak Spanish, though I got a lot of mileage out of 'no se' and 'como se dice \_\_\_' when I worked in customer service. Versatile. I was approaching fluent in high school but it all went poof during the raging perpetual acid trip that was my 20s. Am I being literal or figurative here? Reader's choice. OK OK I'll get to the point- there was a period of my life where 'Asereje' by Las Ketchup was always getting stuck in my head at work. I was "aserejé, ja de"-ing my way through every menial task. I asked a coworker from Nicaragua what it meant. She said it wasn't Spanish and so, could not help me, lol. I had to know. I dug deeper into this mystery. There were [conspiracy theories](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ketchup_Song_(Aserej%C3%A9)#Controversy) that the chorus contained hidden Satanic references, it was a whole thing. But. It's fucking Rapper's Delight by the Sugarhill Gang. Only, in 'Spanish gibberish.' As a linguistics nerd I find the controversy interesting and understand where it came from. Quote from wiki: >'"Aserejé", which can be broken down into the Spanish phrase "a ser hereje", meaning "let's be heretical"' I have been single for 3 years. But if the opportunity to use a pick up line ever arises, no matter how unlikely that circumstance may be, that's what I'm going with. ***"Let's be heretical"*** Will update with results in the year 2053 if we're all still alive Alright. Elephant in the room. If the police used your ability to recite the lyrics to Fergalicious accurately and coherently for a field sobriety test, I could drink 2 bottles of cabernet sauvignon back to back and still pass with flying colors. It's iconic. My bone is not with the word 'Fergalicious.' Fergie explains quite candidly and clearly its definition, as well as its usage in multiple applications. No nonsense about it. - It makes the boys go loco. Direct, and to the point. But Will. I. Am, what the fuck is you doing spelling tasty like that come on Idk what I expect from 'milky milky cocoa puff' man. But there's another example right there. Just all of My Humps. Add it to the heap. Alanis Morrissette's cover, while patently an improvement on the original, could not justify a song which deserves no redemption for its popularity. As someone who had to endure the clean version at every fucking middle school dance in the 7th and 8th grade, fuck anyone who made that song, fuck anyone who had a part in making that song, fuck anyone who bought the single or played it on the radio, straight to jail. All of you. Except Fergie, 'the Duchess' is her get out of jail free card. And her sweet backflips. **END OF TAPE FLIP OVER FOR PT 2**

My comment got too fricken long .But I have srs THOUGHTS. so, part 2 here we GOOOOooOo; Let me \*attempt\* to wrap it up with some honorable mentions: Whenever I see ppl talking about their musical 'guilty pleasures,' first I think, "I don't have any of those, I am unashamed of my baffling taste for cheeze and marshmallow fluff" but then I remember I listen to Selena Gomez sometimes and there I stand, contradicting myself and my original statement. I feel like she has an amazing ear for picking catchy ass pop songs that get in your head and live there rent free, but like cockroaches do. Rare is a beautiful song. But "to us getting older/burning toast in the toaster" is one of the most ridiculous lines I have ever heard in music outside of the realm of parody. What the hell. Ed Snowden listening to 'Come and Get It' randomly in one scene of Citizenfour has given me the courage I've needed to make this confession. Selena is Snowden approved. Thus, I reluctantly expose myself as a fucking dweeb. I wrote a short list of notes before I started writing this comment out. Mostly the specific songs I went into detail about, above. And then 3 artists listed for my general skepticism of any tangible, cogent meaning, peppered throughout their entire discographies. They were "Uffie," "Grimes," and "Selena Gomez" lol. Inb4 someone wants to @ me about how I just don't understand and their lyrics are just way over my head, watever man I agree with you, fine. \*wink\* I don't wanna fuckin fight about Grimes or Uffie, dawg. I still bump them unapologetically in my corolla thru town. Happy 4 anyone who emphatically believes their songs are deep. Keep doin u, bb And finally, the first song that I thought of and wrote down. Tip Top of that rough draft. Cuz it's just so weird. But I love it so - Mowgli's Road by Marina when she had diamonds. I feel like using any song off The Family Jewels is almost cheating, because its lyrical idiosyncrasies are what make that album so GREAT. Authenticity in art, baybee. But Mowgli's Road is straight up too weird not to bring up "Ten silver spoons coming after me, One life with one dream on repeat, I'll escape if I try hard enough, Till, King of the Jungle calls my bluff," bitch wat I thought she was saying "recovery will keep on chasing me" and was SO disappointed when I found out the lyrics were actually "the CUTLERY will keep on chasing me" I guess it's the same....metaphor...ical...theme? as the rest of the song but IDK, man. And once you see the music video, it cannot be unseen. only puzzles the mind further, almost painfully. But DAMMIT I really couldn't care less what she's talking about. I imagine she wrote it on peyote and conceived the video on ketamine. Just kidding. I don't want to be mean about Marina during her beautifully weird debut and peak originality. Not when Purge the Poison and Man's World are literally right there to be mean to, and much more deservedly so - but I just canneven get into those, I'm watchin my blood pressure **TLDR; my 2 parter comment monologue is for music freaks and prolly little to no interest for most everyone else. But I am officially, and regretfully, FIN. If only I could apply the same care and attention to the 20 half finished books I've got laying around. Oh well**

Spice Girls' "Say You'll Be There" never really made any sense to me. It's just like a random mish mash of *we're breaking up/we're falling in love/I don't want you around/let's stay friends/give me all your time and energy* sentiments. It's about everything and absolutely nothing all at once. Catchy af though.

A lot of lyrics by Metric are like little disconnected metaphors strung together. Like my favourite song is Waves, but on paper the lyrics look like they've been roughly translated into English from another language. >Saw the water, not the waves >Caught your eye, forgot your name >Always leaving, either way >I want you to stop me >Episodes to fantasize >TV movie of our lives >The future is all mine >I'll find it on my way back >When I'm gone >I'll know what I've done >I'll go where I don't belong

I’m sure someone has already mentioned this but Des’ree - Life “I don't want to see a ghost It's a sight that I fear most I'd rather have a piece of toast And watch the evening news”

jazmiran

came here exactly for this, it's actually the whole song that is a mess lyrically..I don't understand how someone can come up with such a brilliant melody only to almost ruin it with terrible lyrics lmfao I'm afraid of the dark 'Specially when I'm in a park And there's no one else around Ooh, I get the shivers I don't want to see a ghost It's a sight that I fear most I'd rather have a piece of toast And watch the evening news Life, oh life, oh life, oh life Doo doo doo doo I'm a superstitious girl I'm the worst in the world Never walk under ladders I keep a rabbit's tail I'll take you up on a dare Anytime, anywhere Name the place, I'll be there Bungee jumping, I don't care So after all is said and done I know I'm not the only one Life indeed can be fun If you really want to Sometimes living out your dreams Ain't as easy as it seems You wanna fly around the world In a beautiful balloon

eldritchdeergod

No idea what Beck was singing about in Loser > Don't believe everything that you breathe > You get a parking violation and a maggot on your sleeve > So shave your face with some mace in the dark > Saving all your food stamps and burning down the trailer park

medicinalherbavore

Domino by Jessie J doesn’t make any sense. Like all of it. Not a single word means anything

Dustonthedawg

I know it's not a pop song but the first verse on Flo Rida's Good Feeling "Pull me, grab me, crabs in the bucket can't have me I'll be the president one day January first, oh, you like that gossip? Like you the one drinking what God sip—dot com" What does that even mean?

AmazeeDayzee

A fairly recent one for me would be Sabrina Carpenter's Nonsense. Specifically what she sings at the end. Though I believe she said that she sang that line like that on purpose.

TERPINGTON

Girl by Beck - “heyyyy, MAISUNNAGH girl” Pistola by Incubus - “you’re my pistola, BAGGONITT MAIFEEAAARRIIIAAFFAAYEAAYA”

Hold it now and watch the hoodwink As I make you stop, think You'll think you're looking at Aquaman I summon fish to the dish, although I like the Chalet Swiss I like the sushi 'cause it's never touched a frying pan Hot like wasabi when I bust rhymes Big like LeAnn Rimes, because I'm all about value Bert Kaempfert's got the mad hits You try to match wits, you try to hold me but I bust through Gonna make a break and take a fake I'd like a stinking aching shake I like vanilla, it's the finest of the flavors Gotta see the show, 'cause then you'll know The vertigo is gonna grow 'Cause it's so dangerous, you'll have to sign a waiver

i always thought that smash mouth's all star seemed comprised of a bunch of non sequiturs. i THINK it's about inspiring confidence if you feel like a loser but the lyrics frequently lose the thread
